Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Old Town Fest, Father James, John Cobb… It was another great weekend on our little sandbar. October is a really special month around here. For starters it was the annual Old Town Fest in Port A and though it was a little on the small side, the parade on Saturday morning was fun. I sure missed our dear departed old timer, Marcy Mathews, this year. I thought about her when Rick and Cameron Pratt drove by. Rick would always drive Margie in the parade. I did attend a couple of private events last week. Father James Derkits gave a sermon at the Little Chapel on the Dunes with artist John Cobb, who Father James painted the artwork Derkits and artist in the interior, in John Cobb at the attendance. Carol Chapel on the Elliott provided Dunes. Photo by some music, of which Ronnie Narmour. she accompanied herself on autoharp. There were only ten of us there and it was a special blessing. Cobb also has an exhibit going on at the Felder Gallery of the artwork that inspired the work at the Little Chapel. They also installed a chapel inside Felder Gallery with Cobb’s historic spiritual paintings, of which I am proud to possess a print of his fabulous Baptism by Water. The exhibit will go until the end of October. I highly recommend it. I guarantee you will find it a highly moving experience. Roselly’s, Lavens… Without a doubt, the show to catch last weekend was the Roselly’s (Bristol, England) and the Lavens (San Antonio, TX) at Giggity’s Simon and Rebecca Roselly played a double on Saturday. bill with the Laven’s at Where do I Giggity’s on Saturday start? The Lavens are truly an exception to the rule. They are a family band that features daughter Rachael on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, son The remarkable family Niko on band from San Antonio, electric guitar The Lavens, played and vocals, Giggity’s on Saturday
mom Jana on most excellent vocals and dad Andreas on bass. To put it simply, they make beautiful music. It’s all original material and it actually took me to tears. The Roselly’s came out this time as a duo. The last two times the played Port A was with a full band including steel guitar. They bill themselves as “British Americana”, which is an accurate account in my book. Simon Roselly plays guitar and fiddle and his bride Rachael is a songbird from heaven. After trading sets for a couple of hours, they all joined forces on stage and put on a show that I won’t soon forget. I am going to do my best to get these beautiful people back more often. Listen to me when I tell you to come a running when they play next time. You won’t be sorry. Scattered shots… Shorty’s had a last minute cancellation last Friday which sent me scrambling. I ended up booking a man whom I hadn’t heard of. I took a chance and it paid off. A gentleman by the name of Johnny Kiser (Corpus Christi, TX) took the gig and I’m glad he did. He played only accompanied by a single guitarist and Johnny Kiser played had a tow Shorty’s on Friday sack full of original songs in the country/American vein. Nothing wrong at all with this fellow. You’ll be seeing more of him if I have my way. And on Saturday over at Shorty’s, a good dozen of so local artists brought their wares down and put on an art fair and it was a huge success. With all the other activities going on in town (Old Town Stevie Start played the Shorty’s Art Fair last Fest, etc) I was a little surprised at Saturday how swimmingly it went. Credit the efforts of Karen (KK) Knapp for putting that show together. Also, Stevie Start did an excellent job of keeping the music going during Billy Snipes and the Rasta the art fair. Cowboys featuring Cody Strong on drums and Art Later, Billy Galvan on bass played Snipes and Shorty’s on Saturday night the Rasta Cowboys turned the heat up. I am progressively impressed with Billy’s musicianship. He

Historically, this was a celebration of the late proprietor’s birthday, Miss Rose. Bikers from all over the world would descend in mass to Port A and bring Miss The Chanklas played Giggity’s last Friday ain’t just a strummer. I want to also mention the Chanklas show on Friday. That is definitely an act to also catch. It’s steeped in reggae and island beat and is super cool. The guitarist (Tommy Procter) and drummer (Roy Hollingshead) played with the storied Joe King Carrasco for many years. The Chanklas are playing Shorty’s on New Year’s Eve and Joe King is playing Giggity’s. That should be lava hot. Radney Foster will play Third Coast on Friday.

Americana heavyweight, Radney Foster (Nashville by way of Del Rio, TX) will play the Third Coast Theater on Friday. Foster has roots in this area. His brother is a MD on N. Padre. We saw him last spring at a show on the big Cinnamon Shore lawn which was outstanding. He has ten recording out since 1992 and has worked with the likes of Randy Rogers, Jack Ingram and Keith Urban. He has had 13 songs on Billboard’s Hot Country Charts. Also on Friday, Port A’s newest country star, James Little, will play Treasure Island and over at the Back Porch, troprocker Jerry Diaz and Hannah’s Reef will play the Back Porch. Plus on Friday, Billy Snipes will play the final installment of Sunset Sounds in Roberts Point park. That’s a city sponsored event and will soon

Babes on Board Bag Boatloads
By Jay Gardner Whew! It’s been a fast ride around here lately! I literally just flew in from Key West and attending Emily and Randy’s wedding out that way. Hurricane Matthew made it a little frustrating with coordinating flights, and I eventually had to push everything by a day. But
we never made it once to Mallory Square for the sunset festival. But then again, if you’ve been there once they say. On the last day I was there, the cool front that had gone through here made it down that way. The winds came up, it got cloudy, and it felt like it was time to leave the Keys. Funny how a hurricane can go by down there and not stir it up too much, but then a cold front comes along and messes everything up. Although there was an obvious change in the air, and you knew that the fun was over, no one wanted to go home. I managed a small tarpon on the last morning at the last minute, and that was enough for me.
Time to fly north. Speaking of flying, I guess the cold front that came through here while I was gone pushed a lot of birds south with it. The hummingbird feeders were eerily quiet when I got home last evening, and I didn’t hear much chirping going on in the trees either. I’m guessing many of the hummers decided to try it on the first push, but as I write this, the southeast wind is already cranking back up. I hope they made it, or there will be a fallout over the water down south and many birds won’t make it.
Ken with a nice nearshore ling when I flew out on Friday, everything was back to normal in south Florida, and it was pretty smooth sailing. However, as we flew down the length of the Keys, you could tell that the water was fairly beat up, and the wind was coming out of the southwest (which rarely happens). The long blow lines and dirty water blowing from Florida Bay into the Atlantic was surprising, as I had expected to see the storm surge from the Atlantic blowing water into the bay. But by the time we got to Key West, everything looked normal. Although we got lucky in the lower half of the state and the Keys, as you know the upper portion of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas got pretty pounded. As our prayers go out to those folks that weren’t so fortunate, let that be a reminder to you. Stay ready, and if something is headed this way, GET OUT OF DODGE. We had a great time of course, and the wedding was awesome. We managed to get out one day and do some lobstering, and those things were everywhere! I had forgotten how prevalent Caribbean spiny lobsters are down there, and while it’s not easy pickins’ you can get into a mess of them. There was of course the obligatory Duval Street run one evening, as we cruised around the key on bicycles. THAT was interesting; I can’t remember the last time I actually rode a bike around as transportation on city streets amidst trucks, cars, motorcycles, scooters, horses, rickshaws, and about every other type of transportation you can think of. But, like the saying goes, it’s just like riding a bike. While we hung out at the marina plenty,
Speaking of fallout, since the southeast wind is cranking back up, some of the birds that are just making it down here will run into a wall of wind and will have to stick around for the next push, which looks like it is scheduled to arrive not this week, but the end of next week. So we may have some decent birding here for the next week. I’m betting there will be at least two
Randy and Emily, the happy new couple more rounds of hummingbirds, so don’t take them down and stow them yet. Next week’s pop doesn’t even really look that strong at this point. Indian summer is upon us! My favorite time of the year to get out and do some fishing and hunting. I had totally forgotten that dove season was even going on. Usually that’s the main activity at this time of year. Oh well. Well loyal readers, keep sending the comments and pictures to me at tarponchaser@mail.com . Ken sent in a picture of a nice ling he caught at the nearshore rigs. Good stuff! The Donzi is back on the lift, and we just need the weather window to get out there Past the Rocks.

STATE October is Designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month By Todd Hunter, District 32
Each year, the month of October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Spearheaded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this annual initiative serves to raise awareness about breast cancer and offer support to those impacted by the disease. The National Cancer Institute, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, reports that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women behind lung cancer. Given these statistics, I would like to use this week’s column to share information about breast cancer risks and warning signs as well as the important role cancer screenings and early detection play in fighting the disease. Breast cancer occurs when malignant cells grow in the tissue of the breast. These cells sometimes form into a tumor, which can be felt as a new lump or mass in the breast. While this new lump, along with other unusual changes, may indicate the presence of cancerous cells, breast cancer does not always present physical symptoms in the earliest stages of the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, however, cancer found at an early stage – when it is small and has not spread – is easier to treat. For this reason, screening exams, such as mammograms, are key to finding cancers before they start to cause symptoms, known as early detection.
determining a person’s risk level. These factors can include weight, alcohol and tobacco use, physical activity level and diet. During this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I hope you will join me in supporting all those impacted by breast cancer. I also encourage you to take the time to learn more about this disease. To learn more about this important awareness month, you can visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation website here: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org . More information about the National Cancer Institute’s research can be found here: https:// www.cancer.gov . Finally, for information about the different symptoms and risk factors for breast cancer, please review the American Cancer Society’s guide here: http://www. cancer.org/cancer/breastcancer/detailedguide/ breast-cancer-what-is-breast-cancer . If you would like to review more about the legislature, please visit the Texas Legislature online at www.capitol.state.tx.us/ . If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office; 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32

Breast cancer screenings are recommended for all women beginning after the age of 40. However, individuals with a higher risk of the disease may need to be screened earlier and more often. There are several key factors that are used in determining a person’s risk level of developing breast cancer, such as age, ethnicity and family history. While some men, especially those with a genetic history of the disease, have a risk of breast cancer, women represent 99 percent of all breast cancer cases and have a significantly higher risk of breast cancer than men. In addition, the American Cancer Society states lifestyle also plays an important role in
