Island Moon

On the Rocks By Jay Gardner I can’t believe that by this time next week that we will have a new President of the United States. Well, or at least they will be counting votes and make accusations about rigging the polls. In any event, the world will likely be a much scarier place, and I’m not sure what to think about it all. At least the local elections will also be downrange, and I actually am looking forward to seeing how those shake out. Speaking of scared and surprised, I got fairly surprised the other night. It was kind of late, and I walked out to check the mail. The streetlight has burnt out recently, and it was really dark. I saw something moving around by my mailbox as I approached, and a startled coyote jumped up and ran off, as I did an about-

cognizant of your surroundings and try not to get surprised. I’m not really sure what’s going on with the tides lately, but it’s reminding me of last year. Last year’s fall bull tides lasted into December, and we seem to be on the same pace this year. And this is with a new moon, which typically causes good enough swings to pull some of the water down. This next full moon here in a couple of weeks should be really interesting. I keep waiting on the red mangrove seeds to show up on the beach. Actually, there’s not much of anything on the beach at this time, including a road to drive on. The tides continue to go to the base of the dunes at night, making planning trips down south kind of a silly idea. There were some pics on social media the other day showing a black chevy about to get swallowed by the sand south of Bob Haul. I’m sure it’s been pulled out by now. But back to the red mangrove seeds. They float out of the Rio Corona and Soto la Marina rivers down in Mexico, and then are brought up by the late fall southeast winds and currents to our beaches about this time of year. However, I haven’t seen any this year to speak of, which is kind of weird. The black mangroves are all starting to drop their tear-dropped seeds all over the place right now. Either one of these trees can be grown in your own yard in a bucket filled with dirt, then water from the hose. You don’t need salt water for these. I have a few from Florida that are living in my pond, but I was looking forward to getting some local representatives in there and letting them do the Pepsi-challenge to see who can grow bigger over a season. Yes, I’m still experimenting, which our buddy Dean Thomas is also doing out in Aransas Pass. The fishing out in the laguna is still hit or miss for most of us. We should be hearing stories of redfish schools in the hundreds, but it just hasn’t happened yet. One of these days, we’ll get a cold front and things will start to change. But then again, be careful what you wish for. This weekend is daylight savings time, and it will be dark before we get home from work. Don’t forget to set your clocks back on Saturday night. Hope I’m not late for jury duty first thing Monday morning. Next week is just FULL of civic duty, let me tell you.

face and quickly decided that I could wait until the next day to collect my bills anyway from the box. While coyotes are pretty much a part of our life here on the sandbar, I hadn’t had one sit there until I had gotten that close to it in recent memory. There have also been lots of stories about “day-walkers” that are brazenly wandering around the neighborhood (nothing really new, actually). Seems they come and go in cycles. The idea is, make sure you’re

I’ve had the pleasure to rekindle with a few folks lately. Shane Lafferty came down from middle Texas and we did some fishing and hanging out. Billy Bernsen also surprised us and jumped on the skiff for an evening drift. I’d also like to wish Christie Irps a happy belated birthday; hope you had/have a good one during your “birthday week.” Y’all drop me a line at tarponchaser@mail.com and I’ll see you loyal readers on the rocks.

VOTERS GUIDE If the turnout for this Presidential cycle is similar to previous years there will be about 100,000 votes cast across Nueces County. There are currently 7332 registered voters on Padre and Mustang islands inside the Corpus Christi City Limits. The two largest Island precincts contain most of those voters with a few voters who live on Mustang Island included in Precinct 19 in Port Aransas but vote in Corpus Christi city elections. Each year, November is designated as National Diabetes Month. This annual initiative is spearheaded by the American Diabetes Association in order to raise awareness about a disease affecting millions of individuals across the country, including many living in the Coastal Bend. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a life-threatening disease that affects 29 million – or one out of every 11 - people living in the United States. In addition, 86 million individuals have prediabetes, a condition in which glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be considered diabetes. In our area, there are approximately 86,000 people living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. In addition, research has shown that if current health trends continue, one-third of all Americans could have diabetes by the year 2050. Given these staggering statistics, I would like to share some of the facts relating to diabetes in this week’s article in hopes that through increased awareness, we can work to reverse this trend and support a healthier community. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Both types of diabetes can lead to health complications such as heart disease, blindness and kidney failure. A third type of diabetes, known as Gestational diabetes, can develop in a small percentage of pregnant women. When properly managed, women who develop gestational diabetes can have a healthy pregnancy, although it does potentially lead to an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in both the mother and child later in life. Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, represents only 5% of all diabetes cases and is commonly diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes, occurs when the body does not produce insulin. While the exact cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown, it is generally thought to be caused by a combination of genetics and an immune system disorder that affects insulinproducing cells in the pancreas. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes are generally required to monitor their blood sugar levels closely and take insulin daily to survive. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, develops over time and occurs when the body becomes insulin resistant, meaning it is unable to process insulin properly. While age, ethnicity and family history all play an important role in determining one’s risk level for Type 2 diabetes, research has shown that lifestyle choices such as tobacco use, diet and physical activity level can greatly impact whether or not a person will develop the disease.

most important steps a person can take to reduce high glucose levels and prevent diabetes. There are several local resources in addition to the available to help families impacted by diabetes or pre-diabetes. The Corpus Christi chapter of the American Diabetes Association offers a number of outreach programs to help families and individuals impacted by diabetes. To learn more about the different resources available, please visit the American Diabetes Association’s website here: http://www. diabetes.org/in-my-community/local-offices/ corpus-christi-texas/ . The Food Bank of Corpus Christi offers a free, eight-week course designed to help educate those living with diabetes on the facts about the disease, the importance of exercise and ways to eat healthy on a budget. More information about the Food Bank of Corpus Christi’s Diabetes Hands-On Learning Course can be found here: http://www.foodbankcc.com/diabetes-handson-program/ . Texas A&M – Corpus Christi’s Diabetes Education Program serves to help those diagnosed with diabetes to learn how to manage the disease and live a healthier lifestyle through its diabetes management classes. Accredited by the American Diabetes Association, these classes offer support and information on a variety of diabetes-related topics such preventing diabetes complications and family management plans. More information about this program can be found here: https://cbhec. tamhsc.edu/diabetes-education/index.html . Bouys played a hopping set of classic rock at Giggity’s. All great stuff.

DO NOT MISS LIST Shooting from the hip… Halloween was a gas, gas, gas. Since it fell on a Monday this year, we got a whole weekend of it, but the big blowout was definitely at Giggity’s on “Halloween proper”, Monday the 31st with Austin Music Hall of Fame band, Greezy Wheels. They had a full house, in spite of the

So what now? The reggae and island beat masters, Chanklas, will play Giggity’s on Friday

Ulrich and Sabine Ellison played Giggty’s on Friday Ty Dietz with a full band, featuring Duke E. Brown front man, Steve Santos on lead guitar.

The Chanklas will play Giggity’s on Friday.

John Cortez played Shorty’s on Saturday play the Gaff’s first “Fall Bluegrass Festival”. It was beautiful setting on the stage in back of The Gaff and we had a lot of fun singing all the old timey gospel songs that we love so much. I think the crowd enjoyed it too. There was a lot

Austin Hall of Fame Band Greezy Wheels played Giggity’s on Halloween fact it was a school night. It was all locals and was a hoot and a half. I came unequipped but my pal Andria Shaw came to my recue with a blue wig and a top hat that the late local artist, Tiddle Caylor , owned. The band was just marvelous and kept the house rocking all night. There was a ton of sexy girly costumes and a variety of everything else. I was kind of surprised I didn’t see any Donald or Hillary stuff in the mix, being the hotbed of political spice that it is right now. MC Jackie Lynn did an outstanding job of running the costume contest. And, to put it in a nutshell, the night was hilarious and drama free. I absolutely adore Halloween. It’s right there on my fave list with Mardi Gras and New Year’s Eve. So Halloween is done. Now it will soon be Thanksgiving (and the Turkey Bowl), Christmas, New Years and then mine and Rockin’ Dale Rankin’s birthday. Has this year flown by or what? The Winter Texans have been slowly sliding into town and shortly we’ll see a barrage. I heard it from a good source that Frost Bite Betty was on her way down for a little visit. I can’t wait to see that incredible person. I sure hope she brings Bert with her. John and Karen Boeckler from Wisconsin are already here and John has been sitting in with the Free Beer Band at Gigg’s on Thursday and will soon join the PA Rockers when they start up their Wednesday residency at Bernie’s at the first of the year. There is so much to love about the winter down here, including the beautiful cool weather and the infiltration of our northern friends. I absolutely love these next coming months the most. And I appreciate how much the Winter Texans love the Island Moon…you know, the free paper.

Brother, they were rocking. Take my advice and go out of your way to catch Mr. Dietz. He is world class. I also caught the outstanding boys from Louisiana, Charlie Hage and the Captain Legendary Band at the Back Porch on Friday, at they had their swamp pop groove on tight. On

Scattered shots…

Saturday I got the day rocking when my little hillbilly gospel band, The Sandy Bottom Boys,

I got the week rolling with a great gig by Ulrich Ellison and Tribe (Austin, TX by way of Vienna, Austria). Ulrich and his band are one of the most driven bands I’ve ever observed. They never stop. I’ve been especially worried about Ulrich’s wife and bass player, Sabine who was hospitalized in Europe when they were on tour a few months ago. But she was with the band looked and sounded great last weekend. Ulrich informed me that they were up for GRAMMY consideration in three categories this year. No one deserves it more. They’ll be back at the end of December and that’s a show you don’t want to miss. I also wandered into the Wild Horse last Friday and caught a set of
