Backwater Adventures By Joey Farah Farah’s Fishing Adventures Ok guys we have 24 days till school starts, so we need to really make it count. Let’s make a camp out on the Islands and if there is no surf we will fish all day no matter what. Nick was the first to agree and Robby and Pat joined right in. We had already grown tired of the flats and islands close to home and were determined to stretch out and venture south as far as our imaginations This young man took would take us. We a little time away immediately started from his POKE’ MAN scanning maps and Hunt to slam his limit asking Mr Samperi various of trout on a nice about fishing spots down overcast morning south. We already this week. We were knew how far our close to the Humble six gallon gas tanks Channel in the magic would take us and depth 5feet of water, back so we needed with live piggy perch. some extra gas. After combining our boat tanks and money together we figured we had enough for a three day trip to Baffin with some extra for exploring. Somehow we fit three boys and way too much stuff in that 24ft Jon boat and the 8horse pushed us down to about the yellow cabin before we started to fish. We had been here before with Mr. Joe and started some drifts. I remember the wind was up and that little boat was pitching back in forth in the waves. We all had our favorites, Ed and Nick were always a gold spoon, me topwaters, Robby and Pat threw shrimp tails or curly green frog grubs. Together we seldom went in empty. I think we all had a few fish after some drifts there blind the cabin right up to the beach. I had my rod over the edge of the boat dangling as I ate white p o w d e r e d I was seeing double with donuts and these two beautiful young drank hot big ladies, and their two of red. Suddenly many trout we caught on an explosion of whitewater an afternoon trip in the next to the boat Upper Lagoon. Live pigs. and my rod end flew up in the air! Nick grabbed the butt of the pole and handed it to me just in time to throw over the bail. A monster trout had jumped out of the

I let the fish take some line before I tightened the line and flanked the trout. She jumped and thrashed till we had drifted right up along the grass on the beach. I jumped out and pulled her up to the shore. She was 28” long and we all laughed at the amazement of how we caught this fish! After that we headed south again. As we made our way we studied the map and eye marked different land marks, imprinted them into our minds, even to this day I see them the same every morning just as vivid as the first time I saw them. We came to a The redfish have been thick! community of These two 27&28” pigs cabins just as were pulled in along the we rounded nighthawk bay spoils. the corner of Baffin. We made some drifts and caught fish the whole way through so we decided it would be a good place to camp. In a flat between the islands and cabins we set camp and poked around the cabins. One had a big water tank and we graciously took showers in the owner’s outdoor shower. It might have smelled like raccoon piss but we ended up all saying we could have stayed there forever. If we only had a boat fast enough to get to school on time. The gigantic orange ball of lite set over the King Ranch that evening as we lit the flames

over a pile of ancient drift wood. Roaming the islands and shorelines back then yielded treasures from the past beyond belief. Travelers from the past that had come to rest in hurricanes and tides decades before us lay waiting to be rediscovered. Colors of blue and red twisted in the fire as plastic wood and steal all burned together under an unlimited body of stars. Out of the night a long thin character neared the fire. As we all grasped our sticks and machetes, a friendly voice said “howdy boys, where is your Daddy?” My first Some part time Island residents had no problem with a nice response was” offshore?” limit of trout this week. They took us to the land cut left us on the beach then made us carry the stringers full of drum and reds out of the shallow mud and over the islands back to the boat. That slave labor was the first introduction to both Baffin, the Landcut, and the world of sight casting. The fishing is absolutely incredible right now, fuel that sense of exploration and get on the books to take your kids on a real adventure in their back yard. Spark a fire in them for the outdoors that will last a lifetime. Ensure that your grandkids and generations after will be excited to share experiences in the great outdoors. Live bait fishing is still amazing with every trip seeing is boat over our limit of fish and getting above fifty fish a day. The sight casting is at its best right now as well with tailing reds in the flats so thick at times you don’t know

August is National Immunization Awareness Month By Todd Hunter, District 32
Each year, August is designated as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This important awareness month began as a way to help educate communities on the importance of vaccinations for individuals of all ages. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that there are currently vaccinations available for infants, children and teens to prevent 16 different types of diseases, including measles, chickenpox and meningitis. According to the CDC, staying up to date on immunizations is one of the best ways to protect against these potentially life-threatening diseases. With the school year right around the corner, NIAM also serves as a reminder for parents to ensure their school-aged children have up to date immunization records. In Texas, children are required to be fully immunized before the first day of school. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) sets forth a list of required vaccinations in advance of each school year in accordance with state laws. The current immunization requirements for school entry include: Before attending the first day of school, kindergarten through twelfth grade students need to have had: three to four poliomyelitis (polio) vaccines, two varicella (chickenpox) vaccines, three hepatitis B vaccines, and two MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccines. Kindergarten through seventh grade students need to have had two hepatitis A vaccines. Kindergarten through sixth grade students need to have four to five Tdap vaccines (a combination of the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccines). Seventh grade students need to have three Tdap primary dose vaccines and one booster shot of the Tdap vaccine within the last five years of their last dose of a tetanuscontaining vaccine. Eighth through twelfth grade students need to have three Tdap primary dose vaccines and one booster shot of the Tdap vaccine within the last ten years of their last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine.
Seventh through twelfth grade students need to have one dose of the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate (meningitis) vaccine on or after a child’s 11th birthday. Generally, immunizations are administered by a child’s physician. In Nueces County, the local public health authority has resources available for parents needing assistance in fulfilling immunization requirements for their children. The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District’s Immunizations Clinic offers routine vaccinations for eligible children ages 0-18 through its Health District Immunization Program. For more information regarding the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District’s Immunizations Clinic, located at 1702 Horne Street, please call 361-826-7238. Additionally, the DSHS regional office in our area can also help connect parents with information about immunization requirements and local support services. To contact the local DSHS office in our area, located at 5155 Flynn Parkway, please call 361-888-7837. To learn more about NIAM as well as to find general information and statistics regarding immunizations, please visit the CDC website here: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/index. html . More information about state-required immunizations is available on the DSHS website here: https://www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/ . The DSHS website also contains information for adult vaccinations as well as for those parents seeking to opt out of immunizations. More information regarding the Corpus ChristiNueces County Public Health District can be found here: http://www.ccparkandrec.com/ government/health-district/index . Tomato Toe-Mado By Chef Vita Jarrin Summer is in full swing and most of us are looking to cook up a quick and easy meal and trade in the hot stove for some outdoor fun. Well the good news is that with summer comes a plethora of summer harvest. There is certainly an abundance of herbs, fruits and veggies to choose from. From sweet corn, zucchini, green beans watermelon, berries and my favorite… Tomatoes! Tomatoes are so versatile, think of them like grapes. Some are sweeter, juicer more acidic therefore, using certain ones for certain recipes, gives you a different result. They can be eaten raw in a salad, roasted and made into a spread, sautéed in garlic, basil and olive oil and tossed with pasta, baked on a tart just like berries… the ideas are endless. I wanted to highlight the tomato in this article, because some of us overlook certain tomatoes and don’t realize just how versatile they are. I love eating tomatoes best in the summer because they are naturally sweeter and juicer. Some of my personal favorites are Vine Ripened tomatoes, various Heirloom, Beef Steak, Roma, Kumato (the purple ones sold in a package) they are sweeter than Romas, Camparis, and of course some that are only available in Italy. Such as San Marzano, a plum tomato grown in Italy in the rich volcanic soil of Mt. Vesuvius. But there are many more!!! One tomato I left out is the ever so juicy and delicious Cherry Tomato. Whether its summer or fall, this little round bundle of deliciousness is certainly a winner. I definitely love them raw in salads, because they burst in your mouth the essence of juicy, sweet tomato and I certainly love them cooked down into a sauce, topped over a tart and roasted with garlic and spread on a toasty baguette. Hungry yet? Well grab some cherry tomatoes, whether yellow or red and mix them up and start thinking of great ways to take advantage of this sweet, juicy summer treat. On a side note… I just bought a Better Homes and Gardens Magazine with the best 100 tomato recipes. The photos and recipes are amazing. A great reference to have for ideas and recipes as well as a guide explaining the different varietals available and what they taste like.
Sweet Onion & Tomato Tart Recipe: 2 pints cherry tomatoes 1 sweet onion sliced 1 clove garlic minced 2 TBS Olive oil 1 TBS Rosemary minced 1 bunch Basil freshly chopped 1 tsp salt ½ tsp black pepper 1 tsp sugar Splash of balsamic vinegar 1 package of Buttermilk Biscuits or Frozen Puff Pastry Shaved Parmesan Cheese for tart and garnish
Directions: Preheat oven 350 degrees for 20 minutes Thaw out Pastry dough, by laying out sheets and with a biscuit cutter cut circles and place in a muffin pan forming a cup. If using biscuit dough, roll out with a rolling pin and do the same. In a sauté pan, heat oil garlic, onion, rosemary and add tomatoes. Toss with a wooden spoon and add salt, pepper, sugar and cook down the tomatoes. Add the balsamic vinegar and reduce down until the tomatoes form a sauce. Let cool 30 minutes. Place the tomato mixture gently in the tart and shave Parmesan cheese over them. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the tart dough is golden brown. Remove from oven, let cool and Voila…You have a savory onion and cherry tomato tart!
Tip of the Week: You can use this recipe and prebake a pie shell half way, add the tomato mixture and bake just as the tartlets. You can add beaten eggs, mozzarella cheese and turn it into a quiche. You can add other cheese, crumbled bacon bits, and use bacon renderings, to cook tomato sauce… the ideas are endless. Enjoy yourself, get creative, try new things and most of all have fun!!! Happy Eats!

This refurbished airboat has a state-of-the-art new engine and propeller system, with more horsepower and half the weight of the old engine installed in 2003,” said Ronnie Luster, Chairman of the CCA Texas TPWD Committee. “This airboat can navigate in less than an inch of water or run on land, whereas other enforcement boats cannot. It is also the most environmentallyfriendly boat, as it does not damage or destroy sea grass.” CCA Texas has provided TPWD with over $32,000, which was put towards a new motor and drive, as well as a polymer bottom. With renovations now completed, the 13-year old boat has been rendered good as new. “Texas Game Wardens greatly benefit from the steadfast and sustained relationship with CCA Texas,” said Captain Jason Campbell, TPWD. “Many of our conservation and enforcement accomplishments are a direct result of their support. Funding these repairs will allow the continued use of this airboat toward our shared interest in conservation enforcement.”

Officers contacted the male victim. He told the officers that he went in to the store and when he came out he noticed that the front passenger window was broken and money was missing from his center console. He advised that earlier he made a cash withdrawal from a bank on the 5700 block of S. Staples. The victim is unsure but he thinks he might have been followed. Officers checked the surveillance video and observed a maroon or burgundy colored Honda CR-V with a new license plate pull next to the victim’s vehicle. There was activity observed by the victim’s vehicle and then the suspect vehicle exits the parking lot towards Waldron Rd. Crime scene investigators arrived and processed the vehicle. Editor’s note: This is the third incident in recent weeks. It appears the thief is watching banks to see who leaving with large amounts of money, such as payrolls. He/she then follows them to their first stop and when they leave their vehicle the thief uses a compressed air device to shatter a window and steal the money bag. In the first incident three weeks ago the thief broke into a car parked in the second row of the parking lot of a busy store on Airline. Each of the crimes has happened on the south side of the city.

Island Moon
A Brief History of Island Crime
his crime spree during Spring Break when every other car on The Island was a police car and ended up trying to swim his way to freedom in an Island canal. Another criminal mastermind tried to steal construction material from the house that Bryan Gulley was building and Gully was waiting for him in the garage and shot the car so full of holes it left a trail of oil and coolant along the street leading to the oak mot behind the Pelican Lounge before it finally died. When the first policeman arrived at the scene he heard coyotes in the trees howling at the intruder and said into his loudspeaker, “I‘ve got police dogs and if you don’t come out I’m going to turn them loose” and the desperado came out picking sandburs from his backside.
Calls per officer In the past several years there have been several times when police presence has been reduced on The Island. Police brass would take a look at the number of calls per officer across the city and our numbers were low so the officer would be reassigned. Each time that happened our burglary rates would go up. Somehow they knew. But those have been rare and under the last three Chiefs there have been no real problems with Island burglaries. I have to say the police presence on The Island this year has been the highest I have ever seen and the department these days is more in touch with residents then it has ever been. But the knuckleheads are still out there.
By Dale Rankin As we went to press Wednesday a group of Islanders were planning a meeting to form a Neighborhood Watch on The Island. Here is a list of theft, from cars, businesses, and homes, on The Island in the last thirty days.
Island Burglary Season The timing of the group is good since we are approaching the Island Burglary Season. That term first popped up in 2008 Island when Cop Chris Hooper and I began comparing notes and counted upwards of twenty burglaries from September 1 through early December. When we eventually came up with a final tally it was a whopping 43 burglaries in just three months. We had never had a problem like this before. In those days the Padre Island Business Association paid for a cell phone which Chris carried and answered, even on his days off. If there was a problem it got dealt with. But the new Police Chief had come to the conclusion that The Island did not need a full time officer and Chris had been assigned other duties that took him off The Island. It didn’t take long for the burglars to figure this out – and these guys were particularly dangerous. Their method was not sophisticated. They would pull up in a green pickup and one big guy, with a size 14 shoe measured by the prints left on several Island doors, would ring the doorbell and if no one answered he would kick the door in and the burglary was on. Things turned dangerous when one older Islander was home but took too long getting to the door and when he walked down the stairs there were two strangers in his living room. Another man saw the men coming out of his
The police department at that time did not communicate well with the public (they have since gotten much better and in fact Chris is now the department’s Public Relations officer) and did not alert the public there was a problem; in fact when I called the District Chief he denied there was a problem at all. When we printed the list of burglaries on our front page there arose such a clamor that a public meeting was held at the Catholic Church and the place was standing room only. The Chief offered some platitudes but no real solutions and things were starting to get testy when I made a simple request that the department provide me with a list of burglaries every two weeks – we were a fortnightly then and there was no Facebook – and we would print it so that people would be aware what they should be on the lookout for. The District Chief said, “I’m busy. I don’t have time to inform The Island every time there is a burglary.” That was the wrong thing to say. The place erupted and when the Chief tried to speak he was shouted down. Meanwhile the burglaries continued and the heat was on to find these guys, but to no avail since there wasn’t much to go on. A few weeks later a guy OTB had the rims stolen off his pickup and when he went to buy new ones he saw a truck in the shop getting new rims – the ones stolen off his truck. They were returned and he was told by the shop owner to keep quiet but fortunately he didn’t. Police trailed the truck to a house where the stolen Island items were discovered.
The Chief learned his lesson and made sure the department kept a presence on The Island and the problem was solved. In most years there is an uptick of burglaries from the fall to just before Christmas. We always joked that thieves came to The Island to do their Christmas shopping. We had the Kayak Gang who would roam Island canals by night, checking to see which houses were dark, and figuring those to be weekend homes would enter through the back doors and let their helpers into the garage where they would take their time loading up their loot. They were eventually caught.

But as more and more people come to our Island it is reasonable to figure that some percentage of them are going to be knuckleheads and steal things. The best defense is to close garage doors, don’t leave items in plain view in your vehicle, and keep an eye out; forming an Island Neighborhood Watch is a good place to start.

Five ways you can help:
There was also a recent incident when a brazen thief walked into an Island garage- which had a camera - and walked out with a cooler – we are publishing his photo in this issue.
We had a lawnmower stolen from a garage and the homeowner gave chase down SPID and when the four culprits tried to lose him by driving the wrong way over the JFK Causeway they collided with an oncoming vehicle and broke both the driver’s legs. As I recall two of the burglars were killed. We’ve had random knuckleheads too stupid to know better grab items from open garages; one genius launched

neighbor’s house and pulled a gun on them but didn’t want to shoot. He got a description of the men and the truck but in his excitement did not get the license number.
Each week we publish the list of police calls on The Island and there are occasionally some clusters of breakins in one or another part of The Island – usually on the north end closest to the JFK. There is good reason to believe that many of the recent burglaries we have seen were related to the burgeoning population of squatters who took up residence near the JFK and helped themselves to whatever they wanted. These were not master thieves either. They were arrested after stealing a boat and leaving it in plain sight less than half a mile away and their vehicles now reside in the city pound and they in the city jail.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Now you got something to whine about…
Two old islanders were back in Port A for a visit this week. Pete Desopo and Van Blize hit the town running. Pete has been in San Antonio for quite a while now training for a management position with the Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant chain. He
glad he’s singing professionally now. This band rocks from everything from CeeL oo to Marvin Gaye. And also on Friday, John Cortez rocked the porch at Mark McKinney played Shorty’s with the Back Porch on some screaming Saturday guitar blues-rock. And on Saturday, I got my first opportunity to see Mark McKinney. I was tremendously John Cortez impressed. He’s played Shorty’s banging that acoustic on Friday guitar and blowing
Old islander friends Pete Desopo and Van Blize were in Port A this weekend. will be working at the new Chuy’s being built at Airline and SPID in Corpus. Van has relocated to Arlington to be closer to his children. I go way back with both these fine fellows and I’m sure many of you do to. You may remember Pete used to own and operate CC Magazine and worked at Sharkey’s for many years. And Van was a common sight walking down Alister with his little dog DeeOhGee. We all made a lot of music together at the old Tarpon Ice House. Van tells the story of sitting at the bar at the Ice House one afternoon and Pete walked in upset about everything and anything and started unloading whine after negative whine. He just went on and on. So Van reaches over grabbed a dart sitting on the bar and stuck it in the meaty part of Pete’s hand and says, “Now you got something to whine about ” Pete said it changed his life forever. He showed me the scar with pride.
Scattered shots…
I know you hear this every week, but it really was another great week of live music around Port A. It was non-stop starting with the one man band, Stevie Start, on Wednesday at Giggs. And the next night, Finding Friday (San Antonio, TX) returned to the Porch this season. Their lead vocalist, Chris Byrd, has an amazing Chris Byrd with Finding voice. He was Friday played the Back my doorman at The Lab in Porch last Friday San Antonio 16 years ago and I remember pulling him off the door so he could sing karaoke. I’m
Mike Milligan and Texiana Bluez played Giggity’s on Saturday that harp like no tomorrow. That boy’s good. I did run by Giggity’s on Saturday for some of the Mike Milligan show. They recently Chris Jordan is one did a permanent PA installation in there sick puppy and it sounds great. Mike never sounded better. Thanks to Chris Jordan for putting that together. And finally, I capped off the night at Shorty’s where country-blues purist, John Egan (Houston, TX) was laying down some super tasty slide to old school blues like Muddy Waters and Lightnin’
John Egan played Shorty’s on Saturday Hopkins. I cut my teeth on that stuff.

DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend…
The awesome Simon Snyder is playing Treasure Island tonight, Thursday the 4th. Simon tells me he’s got a real job in the oil patch and won’t be around to play for us very much. He’s talking about taking John E. Bravo with him. Also on Thursday, there’s a big Americana show at Brewster Street with Stoney LaRue and Shane Smith. Plus, Cody Bryan will be at the Back Porch. On Friday, the swinging San Antonio legends, Two Tons of Steel, with honky tonkin’ Kevin Giles calling the shots. I’ve known Giles since the old Billy Blues days when he was a Dead Ruben Limas and the Cricket. Two Rolling J’s will play Tons is sort of Giggity’s on Saturday. like Dwight Stick figures by Renee Yoakum Garlan meets the Ramones. It’s very cool. Also on Friday, the “Rasta Cowboy” Billy Snipes will be his reggae beat happening at The Gaff, variety band Right on Red is at Treasure Island, Ty Dietz is at the Wild Horse, and there’s more reggae at Giggity’s with Flatbroke and the Chanklas (formerly Picklefish) at Shorty’s. That’s a lot of reggae. On Saturday, the uber talented Clarissa Serna will play Treasure Island. That’s some good booking there Tommy
Saad. Clarissa is one of Corpus’ darlings and appeared on The Voice a couple of years ago. She has a beautiful voice. Elsewhere on Saturday, Billy Snipes will be at the Drop Anchor, Ruben and the Rolling J’s are at Giggity’s. Ruben and the J’s are this week’s featured artist that Renee Garland memorialized in stick. I’m getting a lot of positive comments on her stick figure drawings. Next week she’s doing Matt Hole. Also on Saturday, Emily Dale is at The Gaff, Buddy Trevino is at Shorty’s and the James Little Band will play Behringer’s Landing.
On the horizon…
On the near horizon, there are several big shows. Stewart Mann and Statesboro Revue will play the Back Porch on August 11th. Stewart recently had polyps on his larynx removed and is in great shape I’m told by his mother Libby Edwards of Padre Island. I love this band. They are all over the map and Stewart sings like a boss. On the 13th, the legendary Greezy Wheels (Austin, TX) will play Shorty’s. This, and hear me now, this will be epic. Cleave Hattersley and his merry band (including Sweet Mary on fiddle) are part of the history of the Austin Music scene. I have seen them many, many times through the years at The Armadillo World Headquarters, Liberty Lunch and Soap Creek Saloon. THIS IS A DO NOT MISS SHOW. I hope you got that. I told you the same thing when the Uranium Savages played Shorty’s. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there. ♫ ♪ And, that’s the truth ♪ ♫
