Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Good advice from Ray Wylie Hubbard… I picked this up off of Facebook. It’s an excerpt from a series of writings by Texas music guru, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and I thought it was not only funny but pretty dead on advice to young bands…

1. Hey young bands, don’t use in your ear monitors at a club. It looks stupid. Quit it. You ain’t Bon Jovi. 2. OK especially Texas Red Dirt bands… if you gonna steal a riff and write a song, don’t make it as obvious as ‘Stranglehold.’... jeez.

4. Don’t do walk-on music at a club gig. It’s hokey. Cut the sound off for three minutes before you go on so the crowd can’t compare you to other bands (that are better than you) 5. Maybe right now having tasty guitar chops isn’t as important as being on the Texas music chart but someday it might be all you have and will come in handy. 6. Even at some gigs if you think of me as an old whore still turning tricks… you need to know I ain’t faking it.

Three Way Street will play Giggity’s every Thrursday. this week. Frontman Jimmy Simmons has a strong baritone voice and their song selection is excellent… lot’s of the new stuff mixed in with plenty of classics. This seems like a winwin to me!

Tourists everywhere… By the time the Fourth of July proper rolled around, making a left turn anywhere on the island was a painful experience. The whole

I tried taking a little drive down the beach with my wiener dog, Peanut, that afternoon, but only made it from the jetty to the pier house before I started screaming at tourists. The temperature was about a thousand degrees and I almost had a head on collision with some knucklehead in a two story pick-up truck… and at the brisk speed of 6 MPH. I kept thinking, “You know, maybe Winter Texans ain’t so bad.” So for mental preservation, I opted off the beach and headed to my friend’s house for a nice protected backyard BBQ in the solace of Charlie’s Pasture . There would be plenty to do later and I needed time to decompress.

and headed to the Back Porch to catch my favorite big horn party band, Cruise Control. Man, I love their harmonies! The sun was going down and I knew the fireworks show wasn’t far behind. I had planned to watch the fireworks from the upper Carol Elliott deck of the Island Queen played the Tarpon but the boat wasn’t in its Ice House last usual spot in the marina Friday. behind the Porch. I found out later they got tangled up in something and went dead in the water for most of the night. So we found an empty spot on the docks to sit and watched the show from there. We could hear great patriotic music blasting from the Porch and it was another perfect Fourth of July in Port A. Later we headed over to Shorty’s to hear Jul and the Chrome Wheels (South Padre Island, TX) and later Giggity’s to catch the Cord Carpenter Band from Austin. Decompression complete!

More music than you can shake a stick at…

7. When in a music store and you want to try out a guitar, plug it into an amp… don’t ask if they got a mirror.

The live music calendar was…well… hotter than the Fourth of July last week. With the return of Tiffany Tuesday to the Tarpon Ice House, I got the ball rolling early on Tuesday before the onslaught of tourists got here. Tiffany Duckworth Tiffany Duckworth plays the Tarpon Ice is a special kind of House on Tuesdays. gal around our little island. She and her man, Joe Duckworth, own an antique store on Cotter where they sell “beachy Hemingway chic” furniture and décor as well as musical instruments and accessories…all kinds of neat stuff. Really it’s a very cool store and they are very cool people. Tiffany did her Tuesday show at the Ice House for a good while last year, then took a long break. Now she’s back, and back with a vengeance. Tiffany plays a solo alt folkrock thing and is a very talented lady. I think she’s adorable. She’s doing her show over there every other Tuesday now. It’s a goodern!

don’t mind sharing our little slice of paradise with a few out-of-towners from time to time. At least they had the good sense to know where to come. I must admit though, I was happy to see them leave. That insanity starts to wear a little thin after a while.

DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend…

Here are recommendations for the weekend: our favorite son, Cody Angel is back home from school for the weekend and playing a couple of gigs… tonight, Thursday, July 11th at the Back Porch and Saturday the 13th at Giggity’s. These will be Cody’s only shows in Port A for quite some time, so don’t miss it. Also tonight, Reckless Kelly and Josh Grider will be in downtown Corpus at Brewster Street. Tomorrow, Friday, July 12th, the great Americana band from Ft. Worth, blacktopGYPSY will play the Back Porch. This is the show to catch this weekend. This band features fiddler, Heather Stalling, who happens to be married to Max Stalling, who, by no coincidence, is playing the Back Porch on Saturday. Also on Friday catch the wonderful string band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) at Shorty’s, Raeanne and the Ride (Port A, TX) at Giggity’s, and Mama Tried (Galveston, TX) will be at the House of Rock. The Rich Cody Angel will play the Lockhart Band (Victoria, Back Porch on Thursday and TX) will be at Roberts Point Giggity’s on Saturday night. Park for another installment of the summer concert series, Sunset Sounds. On Saturday, July 13th, the bluegrass band Get Off the Lawn will be at Shorty’s, Joe King Carrasco will be at Dr. Rockits and Larry Joe Taylor will be at the South Texas Ice House. So much music, so little time…

During the course of the next two days, I saw performances by Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX), Will Owen Gage (San Antonio, TX), Two Tons of Steel (San Antonio, TX), Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX), J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX), John Cortez (Corpus Christi, TX) and Daddy Dale West and the Comanche Moon Band (South Austin, TX). On Sunday, I attended the weekly Open Jam at the Tarpon Ice House hosted by the great Uel Jackson and later got my blues fix with Antone and the All Stars (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s. That’s a lot of music and I slept like a rock Sunday night. It was a long blacktopGYPSY will play the Back Porch this Friday. beautiful weekend and I guess I
