News From Your By Maybeth Christensen The recycle bin at the Fortuna Bay boat ramp is well used. Unfortunately, people leave boxes alongside it. It is very easy to break down a box in order for it to fit in the bin.
A Big Buck Party was held at the Pelican where four of the top ten players in the country enjoy the sport. Those in the top four are Steve Guenther (first), Irfan Kardas, Eddie Sundin and Geoff Bumstead. Photo by Mary Craft.
You can use any of the slots for the recyclable material as we have a “single stream” system. The sorting is done at the collection sight. Please place the materials in the bin - not in the lot. It is set out time right now. The City will be picking up brush starting Monday, July 18th. They usually get things picked up within about two days. If you set out after they have been through your neighborhood, you will receive a fine. Get your trimming done and the clippings out by Monday morning, July 18th. The next City pick up time is not until September 19th. Litter Critter If you miss the set out, the Litter Critter will be in the POA parking lot the weekend of July 30th. If you have a few hours to help, volunteers are always needed during Litter Critter weekends. The work mostly involves directing traffic unless you are willing to help with the unloading. Helping with unloading moves things along more quickly. As those of you who have brought things to the Critter know, it gets very busy. Book Swap The book swap area has grown considerably. We now
have a “library” room with 5 bookcases overflowing. We have three great volunteers who drop by periodically during the week to restock the shelves in alphabetical order by author. We appreciate their help. Don’t worry about swapping book for book. Parking We’ve seen a tremendous increase in usage of the homes which are owned by people from San Antonio, Houston and other Texas towns. With the additional visitors, parking sometimes can be a problem. Remember, your neighbor needs to be able to get in and out of their driveway, too. Be respectful of your neighbor’s property and privacy. Noisy Waterways Have fun, but remember noise really travels over the water. Not everyone on your canal wants to hear your music. Also, check the lights you have on your deck to make sure they only shine on your property. You may need to put a shield on the light to keep it from shining into your neighbor’s house - either next door or across the canal. Island Cable AT&T is installing fiber optic cable under the Whitecap median. They will be repairing the damaged areas. Grande Communications is also on the Island installing their cable so there will soon be an alternative cable company for us. Much Ado About Mulch Mulch has been ordered for delivery to the Billish Park mulch site. Island residents really use the mulch provided by the City. Island Night We still have tickets for the Island Night at the Hooks baseball game. Tuesday, July 19th, 7:05 PM, reserved seat tickets are just $5.00. Get a group together for a fun night at the ball park. Stop-in to the office to purchase your tickets.
