Beautify Corpus Christi

Greener Pastures

By Chelsea Craig, Executive Director, Beautify Corpus Christi

Maintaining a lush, green lawn in Corpus Christi climate can be a challenge. In the heat of the summer, the task quickly becomes even more daunting. Incorporate these easy lawn care tips to increase your lawn’s chance of thriving through the most stressful weather of the year.

Water, water… wait, don’t water Living on the Coast, especially on an Island, the most natural antidote to the hot, summer days is a day of water. Whether it be a large, cold drink, a dip in the pool, or a day at the beach, the higher the temperature, the more water we need. Contrary to popular belief, your lawn, however, does not always feel the same. A surprising concern in the summer is the possibility of overwatering. A healthy

drought resistant and less vulnerable to weed growth and germination. The short lawn clippings can be returned to the grass and act like a slow releasing fertilizer as they decompose.

Less is More

lawn requires approximately one inch of water per week. Since this is the total amount, it is important to include any rainfall throughout the week as well. Just like your garden, the lawn is better maintained when watered deeply rather than frequently. A slow, even dispersal of water is the best way to ensure your lawn in being properly hydrated. Watering early in the morning is preferred. Your lawn is more likely to hold the moisture before the water evaporates when watered in the morning. Examine the dryness of the soil every few days to know when to water next.

A Cut above the Rest Mowing practices become particularly important to the health of your lawn in the summer. Grass is hardier when kept at just the right length. Knowing whether your grass is a “cool season” or “warm season” variety will influence the ideal height of your lawn. A cool season grass, much less common in this area, should be cut at three to four inches, whereas a warm season grass can be cut at two to three inches. It is also important to mow often enough so that no more than 1/3 of the blade is cut at any given time. If the blade is cut too short, the plant’s ability to produce energy for growth is reduced. Keeping your grass taller, as well as watering deeply, promotes deeper root growth. Lawns with deeper roots are more

A healthy lawn often includes the use of lawn applications, such as fertilizer, weed control, and pest control. During the summer, however, less is definitely more. Chemical fertilizers are likely to burn in the summer heart. It is recommended that chemical fertilizing be stopped at least one month before the summer temperatures set in. Organic fertilizer releases more slowly and is therefore, less likely to burn, but should also be used very sparingly. Creating tender growth will not increase the overall health of your lawn. Weeds should be removed in the summer to prevent them from germinating and seeding in the fall. Weed control containing post-emergent herbicide that targets weeds specifically is recommended to reduce the damage to already stressed grass. The best way to reduce infestation is to maintain a healthy lawn. Lawns that are stressed or go dormant are more vulnerable to pests. Grubs hatch in the summer, so you can start applying grub control mid-summer if you notice signs of grubs or the lawn has a history of infestation. Lawn problems, such as insects, weeds, or disease, should be addressed as they arise. All chemicals should be used sparingly and only as needed on your heat-stressed lawn, as they too are stressful.

More and more homeowners are investing in outdoor retreats. As this trend continues to evolve; we are finding that a typical builder grade

pools and outdoor living areas are no longer acceptable. Swimming pools and patio areas and gardens are becoming the main attraction for entertainment and family gatherings.

Here are some tips for building your new pool or outdoor living space.

When my client and I began her swimming pool project; I encouraged my client to make her back yard similar to one of her favorite places to visit. She liked the Hill Country… so we went with that theme. We incorporated a variety of stones, waterfalls, wrought iron,

#2 Incorporate your senses. Think about the sounds you would hear when visiting some of your favorite places. The crackling sounds of a campfire at the ranch, a waterfall in the hill Country or the soothing sounds of dove cooing can all be reproduced in your backyard retreat.

#1 Choose a theme, such as your favorite vacation spot, for your backyard escape.

#3 Consider the plants, ground cover and trees native to your happy place. Not all plants will adapt to every soil type but soil can be amended and plants can be chosen with certain soil PH in mind. Try to choose your landscaping according to your soil conditions. #4 Definitely incorporate a garden. Even if your vacation fantasy spot doesn’t have a garden; I would strongly suggest that you personalize your outdoor space with a variety of leafy greens, fruits and other edible chlorophyll rich surprises. There’s something to be said for a “show and tell” garden; it almost seems to be magical to guest when they are invited to pick their dinner salad from the dirt outside your back door instead of from the stainless steel refrigerator in your kitchen. Turners Gardenland, between Airline and Nile, is a local favorite for garden needs.

Maintaining your mower will also be beneficial to your lawn. Dull mower blades are known to tear the grass rather than cut through it. When the mower blades are kept sharp, the grass is better able to recover. In the meantime, a sharper cut will also improve the appearance of the lawn after being mowed. Avoid mowing your grass during a drought period. Drought puts tremendous stress on the plant. Mowing in a drought can cause damage to the grass that it may not be able to recover from while it is compromised.

#5 Be prepared. Research your dream spot providing your pictures or cut out pictures in magazines and books to share with your landscape or pool designer. Give us some insight of how you want your outdoor living space to FEEL, and let us build in your backyard what your eye feels on your vacation.

Birding was fun and we were pleased to get over 100 species.” The Chamber of Commerce also sponsored the Seaside Sparrows. Team members Joan & Scott Holt and Kyle Jones, experimented this year by birding in a new category called All Ages: Sunrise to Noon. The team placed third by spotting 108 species, a great number for a short period of time. Sightings were at several Port Aransas locations including the Nature Preserve, North Jetty beach, Paradise Pond, Birding Center and finished by boat in Piper Channel. Kyle Jones has become a great birder, having been mentored by Joan Holt for many years.

The timing of carbs, protein and fats can all be better utilized with better timing. In fact, one of the best thing you can do after a hard muscle type workout is do an immediate replenish of carbs and protein. Within a 20 min window, up to 30-35 g of protein and 30-40g of carbs is so insanely important for your body’s recovery that is practically mandated by top level coaches, trainers and athletes. The super food for this? Surprise! Chocolate milk keeps coming out on top in studies. So knock it back. Just pay the piper first (workout) so you get what you want out of it. The team consisted of team leaders Joan and Scott Holt who were joined by Mikael Behrens, Suzette Freeman, Nick Lorette, Tony Amos, Bobby Sherwood, Julie Findley, and Glenn Martin. The group gathered at their traditional spot, the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center Observation Tower, May 3, with temperatures a little chilly. Joan hoped her bright serape wouldn’t “scare the birds away” but indeed it didn’t.

Ok, I want this idea to finally go away and die. Carbs are not killing you, they are not the sole reason you are fat, nor are they a health problem. Back to Carbs - Originally and as little as a 100 years ago carbs were found in nature in fruits, vegetables and grains. Basically they are the gathering part of “hunting/gathering.” With new technology in the food industry carbs have been cleaved, modified, hydroxylized and pretty much frankensteined into all kinds of weird, sweet, tasty, useful and dangerous products. No longer are they all natural. You need to know what you are putting into your body to understand how they react. But let’s keep it simple. Carbs are needed for basic human function: muscle activity, brain function, cellular transport and replication – you need them to live. OK - so why do you hear they are making you fat - -I mean carbs is the new fat right? Well, NO, fat is still fat, it’s just that there is good and bad in everything- yin and yang, so misinformation about what Carbs are is the biggest part of the confusion – its not the carbs themselves, it’s the insane amount of blast furnace carbs that you don’t need - Carbs your body has no idea what to do with, so it changes some of them to fats and stores them, that gets to be the problem. So let’s go through the 3 rules of happy carbs in your diet. “Type , Timing and Ratio” – make a song out of those three words. Sing that ditty the next time you get cornered at the neighborhood BBQ with the neighbor that is blasting you about the evils of carbs. They are not evil, they just are misunderstood. Know your type, timing and ratio to make yourself a better body. And take the stress and guilt out of the equation. Carbs are not all bad and they are usually delicious so pay attention. TYPE - Yes, fat does accumulate from too much crappy carbs. So it’s more about the types of carbs than carb as a whole. Green Veggies? yeah they are practically ALL Carb and are almost impossible to over indulge on. 64 oz of Dr. Pepper? Probably not going to fuel your marathon on that stuff. Its like magician’s flash paper – Poof – In and out, not used for fuel at all unless you’re depleted of muscle sugars. I’m guessing you already know the difference between good and bad for the most part right? No? Seriously, Do I really have to do the speech about what is really good for you or not? – OK, I’ll make it easy…Can you pick it off a tree or grow it in the ground? Yes?, its fine. Is it in a packaged wrapper or aluminum can or dispensed as a goo, syrup or blob…Yes? , you take a guess if it’s good or not! (Hint: It’s not)

Two new children’s teams participated in the Roughwings Regional Tournament division this year. Toth’s Birders, sponsored by the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, placed fourth in the tournament spotting 82 feathered species on May 9. Brayden Martin, Casey Feil, Maxwell DeHart, and Thomas McGrady were on the team along with their mentors Julie Findley and Becky Feil. Woody’s Warblers, sponsored by Woody’s Sports Center, spotted almost that many on April 27 with 79 species, placing fifth. The team of girls included Hannah Ramsden, Zoey Montgomery, Elish Brennan, and Taylor Alcorn with Julie Findley and Katy Brennan as mentors. Congratulations to both of our children’s teams for keeping a watchful eye on the sky and spying so many birds! According to Findley,” since this was the team’s initial try as a team, they plan on returning next year as an experienced, highly competitive team.” The Chamber of Commerce has participated in the Classic since its inception in 1997. Without exception, all the teams they have sponsored over the years have placed every single year. “That is a testament to the outstanding birding venues and birders in our community”, stated Ann Bracher Vaughan, President and CEO of the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce. “I couldn’t be more pleased than to see some of our youth getting involved in this wonderful sport. Appreciation goes to the adults who are spending time introducing them to the wonders of nature here in Port Aransas.” The Great Texas Classic helps promote bird habitat conservation, community nature tourism development, and increases public awareness of Texas bird diversity

In between? Pasta, milks, honey, breads etc. tougher answer… it depends. Look, I like Bread, I like Padre Pizza and Island Italian and I work my butt off to make sure I can enjoy these

time I eat that stuff? Well, Yeah, why not? But for the sake of sanity, let’s say it’s a date night and you don’t want to be sweaty, sandy and stink, and your wife prefers clothes other than your gym shorts (and really man, your gym shorts are way too small anyway) What is the minimum effective dose? How little can you do to make sure the carbs from your food go to your muscles and not your belly? Well, my go to guy for all things hacking the body is Tim Ferris. He found and relates in the book “4 Hour Body” that as little as 90 sec of major muscle activity could be enough to better utilize the foods, especially the carbs in food, to go to the muscles instead of be stored as fat. 90 sec of body weight squats, or tricep heavy stuff like pushups or triceps extensions prior to eating may really make a difference. (For all the long detailed science about GLUT 4 mediator receptors and such…just see his book, I’m guessing not everyone on the island cares!) The RATIO of carbs with his buddies fat and protein is another HUGE point to consider. Lets just take an easy look at diabetic science – if you eat something that is pure carbs – lets say apple juice – it would be a HIGH GLYCEMIC LOAD , meaning a big load of sugars – your insulin then spikes sky high to process this. If you ate an apple, on a steak, with a salad and oil dressing – there would not be as high of an impact (A LOWER GLYCEMIC LOAD) – less insulin used immediately. High spikes of insuln with high glycemic loads, over time, tends to store as more fat (see guys, I can make science easy and interesting… somewhat) so you want LOW GLYCEMIC LOADS as food. What this means for me – When I eat out, I choose lower glycemic loads, more meats and good healthy fats to minimize the impact of the load and lower the spike of insulin. You also may see me in the mens room doing 90 sec of squats before hand, but I’ll deny it. The point is, I am not afraid of carbs, I know I need them. I want good carbs as a source of my foods and I want to understand how to best utilize them so I can in essence “hack the system.” There you go, Carbs are not evil. You all know I can’t stand easy answers to hard questions (wait until next week!) For the record, I’m just doing my part to end the world of yes or no answers and “Are (blank) good or bad?” questions. People that ask those questions and simple minded, and you my friend are not simple minded..why just look where you picked to live.

Barnacle Bucks

La Posada and Toys for Tots Dates Reminder

Summer Art Camps

By Mama Metal, Daddy Detector & Baby Bucks Barnacle bucks … sand and shells. Beep… Beep.. blip.. trash… Beep Beep… a good signal! After some careful waves of the wand and location pinpointed, the shovel sinks into the grains flipping a few piles of ground in a semi-circle around a newly formed hole. A few more waves of the wand and some more beep beep signals later, the object is pinpointed to the closest pile. Setting aside the wand/coil, I grab the pile & sift through the grains with my fingers. There it is, that tiny metal object that signaled clear… a coin! Casually I slip it into my pocket with the rest of today’s finds, cover my hole and continue canvassing the area with the device listening for the sound of Gold!

Kids from 3-5 grades can get in touch with their inner artist at Youth Art Camps sponsored by the Port Aransas Art Center, 323 N. Alister in Port Aransas.

“Christmas in July” Arts and Crafts Sale July 12

Coronodo’s Children captured my attention, dreams of lost Spanish mines & hidden carriages of gold buried under river embankments soar through my imagination. Beep… Beep… not today. Today it is “beach swimmers salvage”… all those people wearing all that jewelry into the water… how exciting!

Island in the Son United Methodist Church Seeking Vendors

Whether it’s “GOLD FEVER” or an “exploratory nature”… I have it. So far 3 sites have been scanned… one believed to be a homestead site in the old community of Sunshine which existed in the late 1800’s. (Located in modern day Corpus Christi), another a private beach off Copano Bay & the 3rd being the beach near J.P. Luby. At each site we searched with specific criteria in mind. The old Sunshine site we wanted to find relics of times passed while the private beach at Copano, we sought both relics & lost jewelry. The site somewhere vaguely around J.P. Luby was a special location because of a treasure seekers sight… one of secrecy & delight. The site has yielded articles in the past which may lead logical thinkers to conclude that perhaps a ship of the mid 1800’s or so may have CRASHED nearby or something…. But a few lost pieces of jewelry will suffice. My fellow treasure seeker was talking about how the beach patrol & so many others he has ran across through the years have asked what he is finding or start talking about what may be, his words ring through…“It is that eagerness to find something time has hidden away from us all. No matter how magnificent or insignificant it may be.” Here are the finds…

Two full trucks and a van of toys leave PIYC after the 2013 La Posada By Brent Rourk Bright lights, boat parades, and Christmas will be here sooner than we think and once again the Padre Island Yacht Club will sponsor 2 boat parades and the Toys for Tots collection – It is all about the kids! Members of the Padre Island Yacht Club are busy with planning for the La Posada Boat Parade, the Kick-off Party at Scuttlebutt’s, the Christmas Tree Lighting at Port Royal, and the Toys for Tots collections. Additional activities are also being considered. Check out http://www.laposadacc.com/ for updated La Posada information.

Guardians Rescue Looking for Volunteers

One of the biggest needs this year will be getting additional collector boats to help pick up toys on Friday or Saturday night or both nights during the boat parades (December 12th and 13th). With the increase in the number of toys the PIYC really needs several more boats to help pick up toys from the docks of the houses along the canals. This is a tremendously important way of helping kids and everybody involved in Toys for Tots.

By Terri Cotten Guardians Rescue is a foster-based rescue on The Island. We are in need of volunteers to help on the weekends at our adoption events that are usually held on Sat/Sun at Ace Hardware. Some areas that help is needed: set-up/break-down kennels, talking to potential adopters, walking dogs, cleaning cages, etc. Perfect for students for community service, retirees or anyone who wants to make a difference and help save lives.

We want this to be another record year in terms of collecting toys and need several more collector boats to help pick up the toys from the decks and docks and then transfer those toys to the larger transfer boats that tote the toys to the Padre Island Yacht Club.

As a foster-based rescue, we rely on foster homes to socialize and get them to events. We can only save an animal if we have a foster home in place and available funds for vetting.

Collector boats will only need to attend a couple of meetings where times, routes, and duties will be outlined. Interested boaters should contact Brent Rourk at brentrourk@yahoo.com or 361-244-7603. In the meantime, circle the dates on your calendars for the La Posada festivities and remember the toys.

For more information about volunteering or fostering, please email info@guardiansrescue.org. Thank you!

Anyone who has ever been to Port Aransas knows that during the season the Polly Anna is the best place to buy fresh-caught shrimp when it docks at Roberts Point. But what you may not know is that the boat’s owners John Nixon built this boat in his backyard. He cut it in half and hauled each section to the launching area, where he welded it back together; this after suffering a life threatening accident, with his brother T.C. on the trip. After welding it back together, the trailer broke and it took every jack in three counties to pick this boat up. After launch the superstructure was brought down and welded in place. It was a catamaran at the time but subsequently he turned it into a trimaran adding the center hull. He did this without even pulling the boat out of the water. He had to sink one side and float the other side while bringing the center pontoon in. It was a feat of engineering done in pure Port Aransas style.

STATE

State Agencies Undergo Sunset Review Process – Texas Health And Human Services Commission

By Todd Hunter, District 32 Last week, I wrote about the Texas Facilities Commission undergoing the sunset review process. As a reminder, in order to identify and eliminate government waste, duplication and general inefficiencies in state agencies, the Texas Legislature established the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission in 1977. The sunset review process is designed to review each of these agencies every twelve years. This review is done by taking up a certain number of the state agencies each time the Texas Legislature convenes. In this week’s article, we are going to review the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission was originally created in the 1930’s under the Child Welfare Division of the State Board of Control. There were a number of both temporary and permanent sister agencies that were created in proceeding years. One of those agencies was the Texas Relief Commission which only operated from 1933-1934. In 1939, the Texas Legislature went on to form the Department of Public Welfare. This new structure was created in order to help centralize control with the other previously created agencies. After establishing the Department, its primary duties were to help assist dependent children, the elderly with limited resources, the blind, and those of whom that were permanently and totally disabled. The agency also had the social services division which provided numerous services to children, adults, and families. This department’s division on social services had the fundamental responsibility of protecting children from neglect, abuse, and exploitation. In addition, this division also handled the adoptive services and was tasked with the licensing of child care as well as child placement facilities here in the state of Texas. As the agency as a whole continued to develop, in the 1980’s the Texas Legislature worked to define the services of the agency in to different categories of the services they provided as an agency. The main categories were defined as children, families, as well as aged and/or disabled individuals. Eventually, in 1992, the Texas Legislature went on to designate the agency on the Texas Health

and Human Services commission which would oversee a total of eleven different human services related areas in the state. At that time, a few of the agencies were the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, the Texas Department on Aging, and the Texas Commission for the Blind. These are a few of the departments that were placed under the overall umbrella of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is an agency that has under gone multiple name changes over the years and has had its duties and responsibilities changed and/ or transferred to and from other state agencies. Today, the agency is advised by the Texas Health and Human Services Council. This council is comprised of nine members that are appointed by the Governor and they help assist in establishing the various rules and policies of the agency. Additionally, the day to day operations of the agency are overseen by the executive commissioner who oversees the staff of the Health and Human Services Commission and implements the duties and responsibilities of the agency as directed by the council or Texas statute. If you are interested in learning more about the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, you can go to their website at http://www.hhsc. state.tx.us/. Some of the other agencies we will review in the upcoming weeks include the State Office of Administrative Hearings, the Texas Education Agency, and the Department of State Health Services, as well as a number of other agencies. If you would like to learn more on your own about the Sunset Advisory Commission or other agencies undergoing the sunset review process, you can go to www.sunset.state.tx.us . If you have any questions regarding the Texas Health and Human Services Commission or the sunset review process, please don’t hesitate to contact either my Capitol or District office. My offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-9494603).

New Technology For Cleaning ‘Frac’ Water Gets Positive Marks in Water Quality Test Coaxing natural gas out of shale rock takes water, a precious resource for Texas where droughts are frequent, and cities’ and businesses’ need for waters seems ever increasing. This makes recycling this type of water for reuse more important than ever, said Dr. Michael Wetz, Associate Professor of Life Sciences at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a water quality expert. This is the goal of one company receiving valuable research and business assistance from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “Our patented technologies greatly improve the methodology of removing contaminants from oil field wastewater, and compared with current methods, it is more cost effective, and can be done onsite,” said Jeff Soward, President of ARANA Water Technologies. In the latest round of tests with Wetz, ARANA collected frac water from the Eagle Ford field at Briscoe ranch to be analyzed. “I watched Mr. Soward’s group inject raw frac water into the system, which processed the samples for 26 minutes,” said Wetz. “The total petroleum hydrocarbons were reduced by greater than 99 percent.” Wetz said he also saw a reduction of other metals in the water, including arsenic, aluminum, iron, and selenium by as much as 90 percent. The company’s connection to Texas A&MCorpus Christi has propelled his company to success, Soward said. “Having the research of a skilled and knowledgeable professor validating the results of our work is making a big difference in how ARANA’s frac water recycling technologies performance has been viewed by the industry,” he said. “With the CBBIC providing support on the business end, Corpus Christi will be where the future of clean water is.”

Oil and gas companies are coming under additional scrutiny about their water use in Texas and other regions of the United States. This is bringing attention to the idea of recovering and reusing water used in hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, is a process of injecting millions of gallons of water and other chemicals into a rock formation that contains trapped oil and gas reserves. The fracking fluid fractures the rock, and is then mixed with sand to hold open the resulting crack in the rock allowing for the removal of gas and oil through a well to the surface. The water is separated out from the hydrocarbons, and can be treated and recycled or disposed. ARANA holds four patents related to water sterilization, treatment and recycling. Wetz served as an independent and neutral participant in recording the effectiveness of ARANA’s advanced oxidation treatment system.

These same technologies also have tremendous potential for drinking water treatment, as they also kill all microorganisms

“These same technologies also have tremendous potential for drinking water treatment, as they also kill all microorganisms,” said Soward. “We can sterilize and treat drinking water much less expensively than traditional technologies and chemical-free” ARANA has operated for two years at the University’s Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center (CBBIC) receiving support from the University’s business students and water quality researchers. Soward said this process has been at work at frac sites since March, including one near McAllen. “The water started out pitch black and smelling atrocious and ended up looking crystal clear and having no smell,” he said.

Island Moon

SPORTS By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon

Hollywood

It was the first time I had ever heard of seat fillers. These people, both men and women, were dressed to the nines in tuxedos and evening gowns. Their job was to fill any empty seat in the lower section when a celebrity or guest vacated their seat for whatever reason. The idea was that there would never be an empty seat shown in the audience while being shown on television. I was attending the tenth ESPY Award show.

ESPY Awards The ESPY Awards stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards. A portion of the proceeds of the show goes to the Jimmy V Foundation to help fight cancer. On July 8, 2002, I traveled to Los Angeles, California, for my first ESPY Awards show. I had no idea how much fun I was going to have. This year’s ESPY Awards were being held on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, for the first time, at the brand new Kodak Theater, located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles, California. I was picked up at the airport by a limo and driven to the hotel. There were two pre-ESPY Award parties that I attended. One was at the hotel with all the business folks like me, who had been invited from around the country.

Sports Talk Star and Ralph Wiley, a tremendous writer for Sports Illustrated and a frequent guest on the ESPN Sports Reporters weekly television show which aired on ESPN every Sunday. Sadly, Ralph passed away suddenly in 2004. If you have never been at a show being filmed live, there are many breaks and pauses during the show. Commercials, wardrobe changes, and personal changes occur and time seems to stand still. That’s where host like Jackson come in. They actually entertain the audience while the network is in commercial break. At that time, there were 34 categories for awards to be given out that were either listed as individual or team awards. There are even more awards now. Tiger Woods and Venus Williams won the Best Male and Female ESPY Awards. The Best Team award went to the L.A. Lakers and the Best Game award went to Game Seven of the Yankees-Diamondbacks 2001 World Series. The Best Sports Movie went to “The Rookie.” The Best NBA Player was Shaquille O’Neal. Barry Bonds won the Best MLB Player and Marshall Faulk won the Best NFL Player award. The Best Coach award went to Phil Jackson. The other awards are to numerous to list here.

The second gathering occurred the night before the awards ceremony at The night was long as the show the Kodak Theater. This is lasted several hours. My hands where I met several of the hurt from clapping and I was ESPN broadcasters like, hoarse by the end of the show. Chris Berman, Linda Cohn I could not see very well from and Bob Ley. By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Dotson’s Note: Since the NBA play-offs began, I have had many Emails, phone calls and conversations questioning me about the National Basketball Association’s instant replay rules. The following is a condensed version of the instant replay rules. If you would like to have a complete copy, please let me

know and I will Email you a copy. Review of Last Second Field Goals: Since the 2002-03 season, referees have reviewed all made shots that clear the net with no time remaining on the clock (0:00). This is an automatic trigger and referees are required to conduct the review regardless of score. During the review, referees use video to confirm, if they can, whether the game clock expired before the ball left the shooter’s hand. Review of Last Second Fouls: Since the 2002-03 season, referees have reviewed all called fouls that occur with no time remaining on the clock (0:00). This is an automatic trigger and referees are required to conduct the review regardless of score. During the review, referees use video to confirm, if they can, whether the game clock expired before the foul occurred. If the foul is committed on or by a player in the act of shooting, referees will also determine whether the shooter released the ball prior to the expiration of time on the game clock if the foul occurred after the expiration of time. Review of Flagrant Fouls: Since the 201213 season, referees have reviewed all Flagrant Foul calls any time a flagrant foul call is made. (Prior to this, since 2007-08, referees would call either a Flagrant Foul 1 or 2 on the floor and review only Flagrant 2 calls.) This is an automatic trigger and referees are required to conduct the review regardless of score and time remaining. The definition for a flagrant foul is:

Review of Clock Malfunctions: Since the 2008-09 season, referees have reviewed all plays in which they have reasonable certainty the game clock malfunctioned and it continued to run to 0:00 or should have run to 0:00. If referees are reasonably certain there was a clock malfunction in this situation, they use video in an attempt to determine the amount of time (if any) that should be on the game clock. If there was a successful field goal on the play, they will also try to determine if the shot left the shooter’s hand before the expiration of actual time. Review of Two-Point/ThreePoint Field Goal Attempts or Fouls: Since the 2008-09 season, referees have reviewed all situations in which officials are not reasonably certain whether a successful field goal was scored correctly as a 2-point or 3-point field goal or, in the case of a called shooting foul, whether the player was attempting a 2-point or 3-point field goal.

NBA INSTANT REPLAY Optional situations: Review of Out-of-Bounds Plays: Since the 2009-10 season, referees have reviewed any out-of-bounds play that occurs in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and during overtime when they are not reasonably certain as to which player caused the ball to go out-ofbounds. Review of Shot-Clock Violations: Since the 2009-10 season, referees have reviewed plays in which they were not reasonably certain whether or not a 24-second violation occurred on a made basket or prior to a foul being called. When referees are not reasonably certain if a 24-second violation occurred before a made basket or a foul, they use replay to determine whether the 24-second clock expired.

• Flagrant Foul Penalty 2: Unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent The officials can also review whether any other players committed unsportsmanlike acts or unnecessary contact immediately prior to and/or immediately following the calling of the Flagrant Foul. Review of Player Altercations: Since the 2007-08 season, referees have reviewed all Player Altercations, which for replay purposes means any situation where:

• A player is ejected from the game for committing a hostile act against another

player, for example, when a player intentionally or recklessly harms or attempts to harm another player with a punch, elbow, kick or blow to the head.

• Flagrant Foul Penalty 1: Unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent

• Two or more players are engaged in a fight or a hostile physical interaction that is not part of normal basketball play and that does not immediately resolve by itself or with the intervention of game officials or players, or

The 2014 version of the Island Moon ArtWalk will kick off on the Michael J. Ellis Seawall, just north of the city parking lot, on Saturday, June 21. The event is free to vendors and the public. Vendors can begin setup at 8 a.m. For questions visit our Facebook page at theislandmoonnewspaper or e-mail at editor@islandmoon. com . There is no need for vendors to register in advance.

NBA Instant Replay (automatic) “Triggers”:

Give Dad a Shave This Year!

Review of Clear-Path-To-The Basket-Fouls: Since the 2010-11 season, officials can use replay if they are not reasonably certain that a called clear-path-to-the-basket foul (clear-path foul) actually met all of the criteria of the rule. Review of Correct Free Throw Shooter: Since the 2010-11 season, referees have used replay when they are not reasonably certain which player should attempt free throws on a called foul. Review of 24-Second Shot Clock Reset: Since the 2010-11 season, officials have reviewed situations where they were not reasonably certain whether the ball actually touched the rim and are therefore unsure if the shot clock was (or was not) reset properly. This type of replay is only conducted in the last two minutes of the 4th period and during all of overtime. Restricted Area Block/Charge Review: Since the 2012-13 season, referees have reviewed all block/charge calls when they are not reasonably certain as to whether the defender was inside or outside of the restricted area. Restricted area replays are conducted only during the last two minutes of the fourth period and during all of overtime

Goal Tending/Basket Interference Review: Since the 2012-13 season, referees have reviewed situations in which they are not reasonably certain whether a goaltending or basket interference violation was called correctly during the last two minutes of the fourth period and during all of overtime. Possible goaltending violations that were not called are not reviewable. Off-Ball Foul Timing Review: Since the 201314 season, referees have used video to review situations in which they are not reasonably certain whether a player without the ball was fouled prior to (a) his teammate beginning his shooting motion on a successful basket or (b) his teammate releasing the ball on a throw-in. Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Go Spurs Go… As I write this, my beloved Spurs are at war with the Miami Heat battling for another NBA championship and the combat has been intense. I love my Spurs but had to make an uncomfortable call today. It’s Tiffany Tuesday at Giggity’s and the game goes on at 8 PM. Tiffany’s weekly Tiffany Tuesday is not a Spurs fan variety show also goes

a baseball game on tonight?” I’m thinking Uggg… this isn’t going to be easy. “No, Tiff… it’s a basketball game, and a big one and I’m just fearful that there will be a bunch of loud Spurs fans at the club and they will be yelling at the TV while you’re trying to play music, so do you think we could wait until the game is over to start your show tonight… pretty please?” Dead silence. “Who? The Spurs? Ok, I guess. If y’all want to watch some stupid baseball game instead of hearing music, I’ll play along but you’re gonna have to throw in a burger!” I was so relieved that she wasn’t offended that I spewed out a “Oh my God. Thank you! I thank you, the Spurs thank you and all of Port A thanks you… and by the way, this was all the owner, Edwin’s, decision. He made me do this. It was him not me.” Go Spurs Go!!!

The Black Marlin is off and running…

Ray Wylie Hubbard played the Black Marlin last Saturday

Black Betty played Tiffany Tuesday’s at Giggity’s last week on at 8 PM. The conversation I had with Tiffany went something like this… “Tiff, hi. Listen… I know you go on at 8 tonight and have a special guest coming and everything for your wonderful and completely delightful show that I absolutely adore and that you have put a lot of planning into, and I know it’s going to be great, but you know, the Spurs are also playing at the same time tonight and I don’t want to deter any attention from your performance… so do you think we could wait until the Spurs game is over to start your show tonight?” Dead silence. Finally Tiffany says “Who? The Spurs? There’s

David Perez and the Tejas Brothers played the Back Porch last Saturday.

Davin James played the Back Porch last Friday.

The Black Marlin Bar and Grill, located at the La Palmilla Golf Course in Port A, kicked off their summer concert series last Saturday with an impressive show by Ray Wylie Hubbard (Wimberley, TX). This show was the first of ten weekly shows to be held each Saturday through August 9th with a number of high profile Texas acts such as Hal Ketchum, Junior Brown, Brian Keane and the Rankin Twins. The show last Saturday was textbook Ray Wylie. He played all his hits and told all his jokes and seemed generally pleased with the environment and the audience, who were more than receptive. The Black Marlin management had decided to make this a “free show” in the eleventh hour and Hubbard alluded to this several times in the evening, offering, “You get what you paid for.” It was a beautiful evening for this outdoor event and this new venue did an excellent job in their first endeavor of putting on a fairly big show at a golf course bar. It was definitely a comfortable and classy setting. Back Porch you better look out! Junior Brown (Austin, TX) is slated to play this coming Saturday. Brown is known for his high speed guitar virtuosity on an instrument he invented called a “guit-steel”, which is a hybrid double necked six string guitar and steel guitar combo which he has named “Big Red”. He has released nine studio albums in his career, has charted twice on the Billboard country singles
