The Year That Was 2013

2013 was a good year to be an Island kid!

2013 was a year for nostalgia.

For some, it was a year of living dangerously.

Hope Love and Brian Schwartz dropped in on a proposal last Sunday on Mustang Beach. After a skydiving adventure they found friends waiting for them on the beach where Brian popped the question and Hope accepted.

2013 will be remembered as the year Snoopy’s Pier put in air conditioning.

2013 was a year of high tides.

Port A sunsets were beautiful, Just like every other year... Photo by Vesna Cochran.

It’s Always about the Money-4

That’s the only way I can try to explain the attraction to texting, Facebook, My Space, tweeting, and drugs. Those choices sometimes result in teen pregnancy, suicide, drop-outs, and this need for constant acknowledgement and false interaction over the internet, instead of in person. They can not put their smart phones down. I don’t think these phones make them any smarter at all, but they do make them feel more powerful and in control. Having an abundance of information at your finger tips is good, but it in no way insures your decisions will be correct. Most treat their smart phones as if they were attached to their person. They actually feel lonely without them. Someone has now invented a smart phone that you wear like a watch. At least now you will be able to use both hands at the same time while driving. Some of them actually eat with one hand while reading their smart phone in the other. Can social media really be that good for society? Have you interviewed a young person for a job lately? They do not even know how to look you in the eye. The social network was initially designed for your inner group and family, not the world. Athletes and others allow their emotions to overcome them and before you know it, their personal thoughts, opinions, and info is out there for the entire world to see. They need to think before they act. They do not know restraint. They are surrounded by folks who tell them that they are invincible; nothing can hurt them. They like drawing attention to themselves to increase their popularity which in turn translates to endorsements and more money. It’s always about the money! Or is it? History shows that parents shape their children’s world, spiritually, economically, emotionally and morally. If you review the early childhoods of star athletes like Dennis Rodman, Randy Moss, or Ron Artest, you will find that they all had terrible upbringings. They did not get what they needed as a child and it manifests itself in their actions as an adult. Now, that doesn’t necessarily make them bad people, in fact most of them eventually get the guidance they need and mature into fine people, but it does make them different and hard for them to fit in. I believe some parents have failed to provide their children with the proper support needed for them to make good, sound decisions. I think most parents love their children, but they

are not able or willing to change their own lifestyle in order to give their children what they need. Many young parents tend to their own needs first. Some of us believe that the media has replaced the kitchen table where dreams are created, replaced the windows inside our home where kids can stare out at the world from the safety of their home, and replaced the pictures that hang on their walls at home. Pictures on the walls at home most likely reflect the dreams of the family, but also provide a glimpse of the families’ past. If the child understands where he came from and has a grasp of where he is now, then he can see the future. It’s this vision for the future and unconditional love that the parents must provide for their children to keep them from making short-sighted decisions. Those are the most important gifts they can give them. This vision says there will be a tomorrow, you will have choices to make, to create good or bad, and you do have something to look forward to. It gives them hope. It’s about chasing your dreams and sharing your good fortune with others. It’s really not always about the money! Or is it?

Sports Talk

Like college bowl games? You’ll love next year

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Our country, including its athletes, is so insecure with their place in society. Our nation has reared several generations of kids that feel entitled. They are told how important they are, how their opinion counts and that they need to be heard. They live in a “look at me” world and they have not done anything yet to sound off about. I can’t tell you how many times while growing up my mother said to me, “It’s none of your business, stay out of it.” Now days, everybody wants to know everything about everything all the time and feels a need to give their opinion regardless of the topic or their level of knowledge on the subject. Why do they need so badly to be heard? Maybe they’re not getting what they need at home, two parents, balance, structure, nurturing environment, unconditional love, vision for the future and adult guidance. Kids appear starved for attention, but reject leadership as old fashioned.

By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com It’s the holiday season, so that naturally means following the traditions of lighting the tree, shopping at the malls and reading “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” next to a warm fire. Right? Wrong!

What the holidays really mean is parking yourself in front of a big-screen TV and watching college football bowl games—all 35 of them. And if you like them, you’re in luck. Soon you’ll have even more to choose from.

Finally, there is too much talk about now and not enough about then. As we grow older and our horizons begin to appear, we long for others to get it right, to see and experience what we have. In order to do that, they need to understand our time, to hear our stories. Only then can they appreciate what others who came before them accomplished. Did you know that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team as a sophomore because he wasn’t good enough, and Deion Sanders, in his junior year as quarterback, was kicked off of his high school football team and missed the last three games of the season for not following instructions? Both of these players overcame their personal obstacles to become Hall-of-Famers in their chosen sports. The greatest classroom always lies at the feet of the elderly. Ernie Banks used to get on Hank Aaron all the time about the distance of Aaron’s home runs. How they would barely clear the outfield walls. Aaron would just smile and respond, “It’s not how far, its how many.” His secret was not doing 4,000 things fairly well, but by being really great at doing 4 or 5 things, over and over, consistently, year after year. For Aaron, it was never about the money! Or was it? Andy Purvis is a local author. The Port Aransas community Theatre (PACT) announces that the raucous comedy ‘Sex Please We’re Sixty’ is opening soon. This American farce about love in later years, written by Michael Parker & Susan Parker and directed by local Sally Jo Bartlett, promises to keep you laughing and maybe even thinking about what happens when you turn 50 or 60 or older. Perhaps you can relate one or more of these senior characters to people you know.

We’re Having Fun activities: Tuesdays at 2 pm at Girl Scout hut inside Parks & Rec building, 739 W. Ave. A, on corner of Cut Off Road. Activities are FREE with supplies provided unless otherwise stated. A happy time whether it works or not; we always have fun. This program is where participants learn how to or not to, make or do something.

AgriLife Mariculture Lab Tour - Tour Texas A&M AgriLife Mariculture Lab at this H.E.L.P. (Health/Ecology/Lifestyle/ Preparation) activity on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2 pm.

The play starts out in Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast which has been very successful for many years. Her guests, nearly all women, enjoy the Cottage year after year. Sutcliffe’s neighbor, the silver-tongued Bud (“Bud the Stud”) somehow believes that the women return annually to spend time with him. Clever Mr. Henry Mitchell, a retired chemist who is in love with the modest Ms. Sutcliffe, has developed a blue pill called “Venusia” to increase the libido of menopausal women. Get ready for comical roles and fast action. The play and its cast of zany seniors takes off from there…

This working lab develops and commercializes shrimp and sea urchin farming industries for Texas and the US; develops sea urchin feed and production technology for biomedical and ecotoxicological research; develops starfish feed and production for regeneration and stem cell production; and evaluates fishery processing, biofuel/biodiesel, and grain crops as nutritional replacements in shrimp feeds.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour

January 2, 2014

end up. I plan to bring Shelley back in a few months and play at Giggity’s with a full band. That will be a real treat.

Mike Williams and Rocky Arnold…

ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Happy New Year…

Welcome to the other side. 2013 is now behind us and I just hung up my brand new Sports Illustrated 2014 calendar (swimsuit edition, of course) that Susan Powell gave me for Christmas and I must say… IT ROCKS!!! I hope everyone survived New Year’s Eve without getting killed or caught. The big party was at Giggity’s with Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys from Austin. I’m actually writing this before the fact but have complete faith that the party at Giggs will be nothing short of world class. The scene is set. I’ll have some photos for you in the next column.

Happy Birthday…

January is the month of birthdays… Rockin’ Dale Rankin and Deb Doyle’s is on the 8th., drummer Dillon Stowe’s is on the 11th, Tamay’s is on the 23rd, Father James’ is on the 24th, Captain Chester’s is on the 28th, Back Porch bartender Cherise Torbett’s is on the 29th and mine is on the 18th. I’m sure there’s more, but these are my Islander Facebook friends and their birthdays are accessible. Thumbs up to Capricorns!

RIP Deeohgee…

Old friend, Van Blize paid the island a short visit to spread the ashes of an island legend, Deeohgee

My old island pal, Van Blize, came back to Port A for a short visit. His reason was bittersweet. Van was in town to spread his dog, Deeohgee’s, ashes around the island they both loved so dearly. Van and his little Schnauzer were island mainstays for many years. Deeohgee sired many off spring in his day and his legacy lives on. Van now lives in Arlington with his daughter Billie Blize and promises to come visit us more ofter. RIP Deeohgee! You were a great little island dog.

Robert Earl, Terri & Lloyd…

Van joined me for the Robert Earl Keen Christmas show at Brewster Street the day after Christmas. Actually, we had gone to see Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines more than REK. This is fourth year that I’ve gone to this show and it was by far the busiest one yet. You could barely move in there. Last year, a pretty stupid, drunken fight broke out at the end of the show and pretty much killed any good holiday vibe that might have been going on. This year the house security crew had a very definite aggressive presence. The show itself was fairly predictable. The musicians were dressed in full Christmas regalia… Robert Earl dressed as one of the wise men, Rich Brotherton, his guitarist as Tiny Tim and his bassist, Bill Whitbeck, as Charles Dickens. Terri and Lloyd had a “Santa’s Helpers” motif going on. The stage was decorated complete with a Christmas tree,

Jul and the Chrome Wheels will be playing Shortys and Giggity’s this weekend. Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines played Brewster Street last Thursday night with Robert Earl Keen a big turkey and a bunch of oversized presents with icons from the famous “Merry Christmas From the Family” song (a big box of Salem Lights, etc.). They did the same thing last year. To be honest, I listened to all of Terri and Lloyds set and about a half dozen REK songs then decided to split. It was too crowded for me. Plus, I wasn’t too excited about sticking around to see how crazy the drunken crowd was going to get this year. This entourage played the same shows in seven days in seven different cities this season and played some major venues around the state.

Shelley King… On Saturday, the show to see was definitely the Shelley King performance at Shorty’s. Shelley was fresh off the heels of a national tour with a group of girls that call themselves Good The amazing Shelley Girls with Bad King played Shorty’s Intentions (Lisa last Saturday night Morales and Robyn Ludwick). The next night after the Shorty’s show, Shelley recorded a live CD at Antone’s with Carolyn Wonderland, Guy Forsyth and Pat Brink. A few months ago, Shelley recorded a new CD with the members of the famous New Orleans roots band, the Subdudes… this is one happening gal who never stops. We are so blessed that she has embraced our little island and loves playing at Shorty’s. Her songs and her voice are as good as it gets. The house really responded to Shelley at this show and she had a blast. During the break, I took her down to Giggity’s to hear The Melissa Brooke Band and she was really impressed. I introduced her to Anthony Strapp, Melissa’s manager. Shelley King is a lady who can really make things happen and there’s no telling where that introduction might

Mike Williams and Paul Taylor will play every Monday at Giggity’s The Mike Williams Jazz Band featuring Rocky Arnold played the Tarpon Ice House last Friday. This band of seasoned veterans included Williams on trombone and guitar, Arnold on piano, Rick Lehman on drums, Eddie Olivarez on tenor sax, Jack Throwbride on clarinet and Cheo Reyes on trumpet. They played a delightful selection of torch songs and jazz standards on such gems as Unforgettable and the Sinatra classic, This Love of Mine. The 91 year old Arnold is a career musician who has played with such luminaries as Paul Desmond, Bud Freeman, Jack Teagarden and J.C. Higginbotham, and recorded with Slim Whitman. When I listened to this band, I envisioned a scene from Casablanca… two lovers at a dark corner table, a tuxedo clad waiter pouring champagne and a spotlight on the grand piano with rattan fan blades slowly turning…an elegant crooner singing love song after beautiful love song. This was truly beautiful music from a classic musical era.

Ruben Limas will start playing every Thursday at Giggity’s.
