By Maybeth Christensen Plan to attend the public forum to discuss the Billish Park improvements on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 PM, at the Seashore Learning Center Gym on Encantada. This is your time to provide the input for what you would like to see in the park.
My comments on bicycle riders prompted a visit from several members of a group of riders. We discussed the law and they pointed out that there is not a bicycle lane on Whitecap. The lines are for a parking lane. The other point is that they may ride 2 abreast when there is more than 1 lane on the street. So, drivers be aware of bicycles and instead of running up behind them, move over to the left lane and pass them. Be aware that the speed limit on Whitecap is A6 35 miles per hour – Letters to Riley not 55!!!

There are a lot of things happening on our Island this week. Here are a few of them.
No police boat Corpus Christi Floyd Simpson poked the final hole in the hull of a police boat to patrol Island canals when he told the Island Strategic Action Committee (ISAC) this week that he doesn’t have the manpower to staff it. It could happen sooner or later but as of now it will be later. He told the group that he would prefer to have a police storefront on The Island and is currently looking for a location and then will be looking for volunteers to help staff it. He said his goal Member SIPCis to ultimately have an “Island Cop” who is the main police contact for citizens on The Island.
My humans left me and the Little Yappy Dog home two nights in a row but we got even. I peed the floor and the Little Yappy Dog pooped the back porch. We dogs got our ways. I tried to blame the wet spot on the cat but the cat ratted me out. Stoopid Cat!
Stay tuned.

Code enforcement Simpson also said as of February 1 CCPD has taken over code enforcement. That means they now can help police dumping and other formerly non-police offenses and that trespassing is at the top of the list. Across

Beach sticker prices
The City of Port Aransas sold about $900,000 in stickers last year while Corpus Christi sold only about $700,000. That has led to some grumbling in Port A that splitting the sticker revenue according to linear feet of beach maintained by each entity might need a review.
He also said the PD is looking into the use of cameras to catch No Wake violators as part of a department-wide computer system upgrade that should be in place by the end of the year.
I got to go back and see Dr. Christi again because I found another one of the pounds I lost. I think it might have been the pizza bones. Or it could have been the stuff I found when I went trash diving in the office last week. Boy did I get in trouble for that. But I scored a piece of an old hamburger that made my stomach feel funny.

A move to raise the price of beach parking stickers from the current $12 has been underway for about a year but is getting nowhere fast. It will take agreement of the cities of Corpus Christi and Port Aransas, and Nueces County to do it and so far it doesn’t appear they are talking. Even after they agree it will take about a year to get the approval of the Texas General Land Office which must sign off on the deal.

Brent Moore from the POA Board and I have met with the designer and the Parks Department several times in order to get to this point. One of the things we know is that $500,000 will not be enough to redo the entire park. The forum will provide an opportunity to make some choices on what can be done now. We expect to need another bond election in order to completely redo the park, but we think it is worthwhile to at least get started!

The Island Moon Facebook page – theislandmoonnewspaper – has become the Island bulletin board and by watching it everyday it has become apparent that the number of abandoned dogs on The Island is going up steadily and quickly. Some are being abandoned by puppy farms when they become too old to sell and others, sadly, just simply because people don’t want them anymore and know that if they dump them on The Island we won’t let them starve. Cornelius McGillicuddy There is a wonderful story about longtime Philadelphia Athletics Manager, Cornelius McGillicuddy, otherwise known as “Connie Mack.” Mack’s player-manager career spanned more than fifty years, yet he was never ejected from a game by an umpire. The reason was simple: Connie never learned to swear. During one game in 1929, the A’s had their ace, “Lefty Grove,” on the mound. Grove got ruffed up after consecutive errors by Max Bishop and Jimmie Dykes, and was not handling the situation well. Mack decided to remove Grove from the game between innings. While the A’s were at-bat, Mack walked down to Grove who was sitting on the bench and said, “That will be all for you today, Robert.” Grove did not handle this news well either and responded, “To hell with you, Mr. Mack.” With that, Connie softly leaned forward towards Grove and said, “And to hell with you too, Robert.” The entire bench broke out laughing, including Grove, who got up and left for the clubhouse. Five new managers will take their place on the bench next week in the Major Leagues. Brad Ausmus of the Detroit Tigers and Lloyd McClendon of the Seattle Mariners will battle in the American League, while Bryan Price of the Cincinnati Reds, Matt Williams of the Washington Nationals and Rick Renteria of the Chicago Cubs will test their managing skills against each other in the National League. Out of the five, only McClendon has managed before with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Only Price, a longtime pitching coach, has never played in a Major League game. The other three new managers all had terrific careers before jumping into the managing arena. Oh, how the times have changed.
By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Dotson’s note: I was an active participant in the spectacle for 22 years. That participation involved all sorts of activities, including being at 22 years of FinalFfour games. I have been asked many times regarding the special happenings that I remember during this almost quarter century of high level college basketball. There are many things that stand out, I am thinking seriously about writing a book. In the meantime, read on to assist you in keeping updated with the progress of “March Madness.” To me, the Final Four is a bigger happening than the Super Bowl” Hang in there for the rest of the “2014 Big Dance.”
“Warren Buffett Offers $1 Billion for Perfect March Madness Bracket” This was the headline story before the tournament started. As of 8 PM Friday, March 22, 2014 there were zero brackets left that had a chance to win. Too bad, wait until next year… what a great marketing gimmick by “Quicken Loans.” Warren Buffett had tongues wagging about basketball. The billionaire, who ranks 4th on Forbes list of top billionaires, with an estimated worth of $53 billion, made you an offer: he’ll give you $1 billion for a perfect March Madness bracket. The 1 billion payoff was guaranteed by “Quicken Loans.” I sent in my bracket, hope you did also. I decided that after I won, I would take the $500 million cash payout. After collecting, I was planning the best “hoop it up party,” the Island (North Padre) has ever seen. I suggested that if I didn’t win and you did, I expected an invitation from you to your party. I was okay on the First Four, but in the First Round when Ohio State lost to Dayton I was gone. How far did you get?
The Sweet Sixteen…Teams to Watch With the “Sweet Sixteen” starting today in Memphis (West Regional), New York (East Regional), Anaheim (West Regional) and Indianapolis (Midwest Regional), suggest you re-supply your “Person Cave” and get ready. After these eight games, four on Thursday and four on Friday. The “Elite Eight” will participate in four games, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.
The “Sweet Sixteen” matchups are: Thursday 6:15 pm (CBS) Dayton vs Stanford; 6:47 pm (TBS) Baylor vs Wisconsin; 8:45 pm (CBS) Florida vs UCLA; 9:17 pm (TBS) Arizona vs San Diego State. Friday 6:15 pm (CBS) Tennessee vs Michigan; 6:27 pm (TBS) Iowa State vs Connecticut; 8:45 pm (CBS) Kentucky vs Louisville; 8:57 pm (TBS) Virginia vs Michigan State. The “Elite Eight” will play Saturday and Sunday. Postponement of the “Honey Dos” is a must. See You in Arlington-April 5th & 7th, 2014 After the “Elite 8,” go ahead and set up your bracket for the final four and see how you do. Let us know your picks. Call, text or tweet the Benchwarmers. April 1 Registration Deadline for Annual Texas Birding Contest Whether you’re a novice birder with a busy schedule or a “fool” for birding who enjoys a little friendly competition, the 18th Annual Great Texas Birding Classic is a must. Form a team and enter to compete by the April 1 deadline. Enter one or several categories lasting from 24 hours of competition or for an entire week during this year’s Birding Classic being held from April 15 through May 15. For the second year, participants choose from among 42 different categories that offer something for everyone, regardless of bird watching experience, age, ability, location, length of time available to bird and other variants. Last year’s Great Texas Birding Classic attracted more than 300 participants from El Paso and the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley and the Pineywoods of East Texas, who recorded 398 avian species during a host of regional and statewide daylong and weeklong tournaments. Fifty-six teams entered, attracted by the format flexibility and lower registration fees. “Last year’s participation was the highest in the past decade,” says GTBC director Shelly Plante, TPWD’s nature tourism manager. “The Classic is a perfect fit for naturalists, birders, communities, nature centers, bird clubs and school groups. Besides, it’s a fun way to spend the day outside with family and friends.” Participating teams can choose from a variety of tournament categories, choosing to participate for a day or more and compete regionally or statewide, including:
• The Big Sit! This category is great for teams that have one or two “ringer” birders or if you have lots of people wanting to be on one team together. • State Park Tournament, Big Sit! or Sunriseto-Noon Tournament. Ideal for a team seeking a more laid-back day without too much traveling around and for teams composed of mixed ages, so kids, teens and adults can be on a team together. • Regional Big Day. Perfect for those who want to test their skills against others in your part of the state, while birding for most or all of a 24hour period. Categories are separated by age groups. Mentor a Roughwings (13 years and younger) or Gliders (age 14-18) or do your own adult tourney. • Statewide Tournament. Take on birders throughout Texas for either the Statewide Big Day Tournament for 24 hours of birding or enter the Statewide Weeklong Tournament for six consecutive days of birding anywhere and everywhere in Texas. To register online and learn the rules and tournament details, visit: www.BirdingClassic. org. All registration fees and sponsorship dollars go toward conservation grants benefiting birding, nature tourism, and habitat restoration and enhancement projects throughout Texas. Some winning teams even help select which projects will be funded. Have questions? Talk to Birding Classic staff by calling (512) 389-4500.

Student arrested Thursday, March 20, 10:31 a.m. 2601 Waldron Road Terroristic Threat (Penal Code Section 22.07) State Jail Felony Corpus Christi Police apprehended a 16-year-old boy for making a bomb threat at a high school located at 2601 Waldron Road. A school faculty member found the threat in a bathroom written on the wall and notified the Corpus Christi Police Officer on the campus. The school staff and the Officer investigated the threat and found the 16-year-old boy who wrote the threat. The Officer took the 16-year-old boy into custody for Terroristic Threats (a charge punishable by up to two years incarceration and up to a $10,000 fine) and delivered him to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center.
“I flew a total of 1341 combat hours in Vietnam,” Witherill said at a book signing at his Island home last weekend. “This is an account of about 300 of those hours.” The book is punctuated with poignant passages from Jim’s wife and co-author Anne who balances Jim’s fight in Vietnam with her fight to keep her spirits up at home while pregnant with the couple’s first child.
Jim and Anne Weatherill during a book reading at their home on The Island.
Army life
toward me, I push my cut-down M2 out my window. The end of my trigger finger attached directly to the adrenaline pump in my heart. I see their faces and I fire. My Worry Line has disappeared behind the cockpit.”
The book also pinpoints a little-noted side of the life of the soldier in a war zone, the superior officer who pulls rank to keep himself out of harms way.
When their ship is hit by ground fire and an engine catches fire they crash into the jungle and are holed up in the roots of a huge tree as the enemy follows their path.
“War for Chinook pilots is mostly re-supply and waiting to get shot. To mete out the bad evenly, we have our Tac E List. A tactical emergency means somebody is getting hit and running out of people or ammo; the critical stuff. Tactical emergencies are the devil’s lottery; some are easy to win, other pay out in death.” The list provides a framework for assigning dangerous missions. “The list makes a little part of this crazy war fair. In dice rolls with fate, the list is the only equalizer.” But one night crews are called for a dangerous mission to move three loads of troops into a landing zone which is under siege. Missing from those assigned to the mission is the name of the Major who is making the assignments whose name is at the top of the Tac E list and who should be flying. The Warrant Officers who fly the helicopters find out, “LZ Tara is fighting a large force of Viet Cong. We don’t have any high air cover at the LZ. Cloud ceilings are way too low. We might not even see any (accompanying) gunships. The whole coast is socked in with fog and rain. The weather is moving south pretty fast. If we don’t get up there tonight, LZ Tara will be overrun.”
“Suddenly, an NVA soldier appears around the roots I’m trying to graft myself to and steps on my left boot. I shoot three rounds into his chest. He falls lifeless beside me. A second enemy soldier scrambles over my root and spots his dead comrade. I shoot him too.”
“Bastard!” one of the pilots shouts at the offending Major who leans into his ear and whispers, “Fifty percent survival rate.” The men fly the mission without the Major but get their revenge when the last act of the departing unit commander is to assign the Major to combat duty with an infantry unit in the front lines for the last six months of his tour. Witherill and his comrades stand silently by and watch as the Major takes the walk of shame to his departing helicopter.
The Worry Line “We’ve changed months, but it’s only the next day,” Witherill writes, as the pilots fly into Kontum, which is under attack, with a supply of ammo and water. “At the east end of the airfield, we see five tanks backed into one another to form a star. Enemy dead surround the tanks. The tank commander comes on the air. ‘We need machine gun barrels next time you come. Is that clear’? Short and to the point. They get their barrels on the next sortie.” The spine of the book’s action is driven by the fully-developed characters who each mark off the days on their calendars until their year is up. “Some people couldn’t wait to get out of there,” Witherill said, “but combat is like a drug and some people went back.” One of the characters re-enlisted and returned, only to be killed one day before his tour was up. The definitive theme which emerges from the tightly-edited book, which reads more like a novel than a memoir, is how Witherill and the men around him deal with what they refer to as their “Worry Line – the crossing point into battle – (that) draws itself across a person’s path. Sometimes it’s at the hooch door, sometimes at the operation briefing, and sometimes it’s attached to bullets coming up from the jungle. It’s a soldier’s early warming system.” Sometimes the Worry Line runs through a dot on a map which denotes the trouble spot where they are headed. One night they awaken to a canopy of “four-star, red cluster bursts – the worst possible signal. We are overrun. We are way past my Worry Line.” They dive into a dark bunker which collapses leaving them trapped as the position is overrun until American gunships arrive.
The safety of an M2 rifle As the blades carry them survival is based on a combination of luck, dead reckoning, and “the basic tenets of aviation – time, heading, speed and distance.” But sometimes that isn’t enough. Witherill trades his GI issue .45 caliber pistol for an M2 rifle and takes it to a local carpenter to cut down to pistol size. The carpenter takes time out from making a child’s coffin to work on the gun. But the change proves to be a life saver as he hovers his Chinook over a graveyard while hand-hand fighting takes place under his ship. “I reach over and take my M2 from its holster at the side of my seat. Two VC climb out of a tomb beside the cockpit and look, first at the Chinook, then at me. As they swing their rifle barrels
Must have fallen off the truck Thursday, March 20, 3:31 p.m. 10241 South Padre Island Drive Warrant of Arrest Corpus Christi Police arrested a 28-year-old man for a warrant for his arrest Thursday afternoon after Officers investigated a suspicious person at a parking lot located at 10241 South Padre Island Drive. A Corpus Christi Police Officer noticed three men selling home audio systems out of the back of a black 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck in the parking lot. The Officer investigated and learned the packaged systems were sold by the three men at over $2,000 dollars less than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Officers learned the men are not residents of Corpus Christi and do not have a city solicitation permit. Officers gathered information and discovered one of the men, had an active warrant for his arrest out of Austin for a parole violation. Officers released the other two men and delivered the man to the city detention center.
Near death by Agent Orange and a rocket round Witherill flies into Laos with barrel loads of Agent Orange and one tips in the aircraft and arms itself, giving the crew eleven seconds to get the entire load out the back before the ship explodes. They do it, but the last barrel explodes so near the ship the concussion sucks crewmen out the back of the craft to their death.
All three men were suspected of poor decision making.
Stunned by women with no tailgate Wednesday, March 19, 9:21 p.m. 3000 block of Laguna Shores Road Assault
With less than 90 days to go before going home Witherill finds himself in Ban Me Thout. When the Vietnamese maids leave the compound each night the mortar and rocket attacks commence and the men race to a bunker.
A 34-year-old woman reported an assault at a bar located in the 3000 block of Laguna Shores Wednesday night. Corpus Christi Police responded to a complaint of an assault at 9:21pm and the 34-year-old woman told Officers she was attacked by two women. The 34-year-old woman told Officers she was approached at the bar by the two women, both of whom she does not know. The 34-year-old woman told Officers the two women asked her to go outside with them to which she did. The 34-year-old woman told Officers that once she was outside, one of the women used a stun gun to shock the 34-year-old woman in the abdomen. The 34-year-old woman told Officers the two women then punched her in the face several times and then left in a white Ford truck with no tailgate. The 34-year-old woman told Officers she has not met the two women previously and does not know why she was attacked.
“During one of the rocket rains, a man falls through the bunker entrance, crosses my Worry Line, and rolls down the stairs. He bounces off the grenade pit wall and lands on the bunker floor from sheer momentum. A piece of shrapnel protrudes from his fatigue jacket. His life is gone.” The men sit in the bunker and stare at the corpse. “He had bad luck. Now he’s floating around in here someplace.” “There’s a sudden thump of pressure, and the bunker air becomes dust. Another roar as the dust settles around us. I don’t know who noticed it first, but suddenly, we’re all staring at the nose of a 122 mm rocket that penetrated the roof of our bunker. It did not detonate. Maybe it will. Some are not waiting to find out. Two men run up the dirt strewn bunker steps, cross over my Worry Line, and disappear into the roar of the night. We hear sobs and prayers from corners of the bunker.”

Witherill finally returns home to Anne and his new baby daughter where he is spit on by protesters at the airport on his arrival. For years he and Anne kept their memories stored in an old footlocker until three years ago when they decided to exorcise them by writing this book.

We congratulate our fellow Islanders on a compelling read that strips the romance from war and brings it to a powerful, personal, and gut-wrenching level, both on the battlefield and on the home front. Jim’s poetry sums it up: The war comes like a thin blade cutting; Slicing like a draft at the doors of our lives.

The Port Aransas Community Theatre has scheduled auditions for ‘On Death’s Doorstep’, a popular one act play, on April 6th at 2:00 P.M. at the theatre. Written by Walter Ellis, the play is a comical murder mystery with a heavy dose of finger pointing, innuendoes, and surprises. Salle Ellis, who last directed the Christmas play ‘Ebby Scrooge’ at PACT, will be directing the play. The play centers around 7 actors who are mindfully preparing for a play, however, the leading man mysteriously dies of puffer fish poisoning. The local sheriff determines that it was not an accident, but murder, and the investigation begins amidst intense quibbling and finger pointing with lots of laughs along the way. This will be an opportunity for everybody to learn the techniques for acting, directing and assisting back stage. All of the actors selected for this play will learn the "how to" of producing a short play.

were needed and wounded needed to be moved out. As is the case with any soldier, zthe life was days of boredom punctuated with moments of terror. The harbinger of trouble was a “secret” load of Flechette rounds which were made up of 1500 tiny spiked projectiles fired from a cannon at point blank range. When the Chinook pilots saw these loaded on board they knew they were flying into a firebase that was being overrun by the enemy.
The cover is a photograph of a Chinook moving an artillery piece from a pocked-marked forward fire base which has just come under attack. The photographer says that Witherill is the pilot of the Chinook in the picture. Much of the work Witherill did was transporting men and material into hot firebases and in the process losing several ships to enemy fire..

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Clay McClinton severely injured…
for harmonizing and maintains a super high energy (as well as goofy) stage presence. Their routines were tight and well rehearsed despite the fact that they call their show “Unrehearsed and Unashamed”. They brought people up from the audience who had obviously sang with them before and made very polished additions to the act… one of which was Shirlene Burroughs, the wife of our illustrious police chief, Scott Burroughs. It was like karaoke with real musicians. I thought the whole ordeal was delightful. I laughed and sang along and had a grand old time. I highly recommend this show to everyone… even music snobs like me and I owe Gale Swenson an apology. It was a blast!
Scattered shots…
Clay and Delbert McClinton Say a little prayer for our friend Clay McClinton (son of Delbert McClinton) who was in a bad car wreck last Friday and suffered head injuries. He has severe swelling of the brain and is currently under heavy sedation in an induced coma in Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Clay usually plays the Back Porch every season and is one of the nicest guys on the music circuit today. We’re pulling for you Clay. God bless!

I gotta say, this jam Club with Bushbullit. Bubble is turning out to be something Puppy had the big hit, Hot special and really seems to be Smoke and Sassafras, back catching on. There was a big Billy Abel and Mandy Rowden will play in 1969. The late Roy Cox turnout of musicians, one of Shorty’s on April 4th. was bassist for the band and which was Kelly Mickwee lived in Port A. A lady at my church, Gale Swenson, has been after me for months to go see the singalong show at the Wild Horse Saloon on Friday nights. I have to admit, I’ve dragged my heels on that one thinking, “yeah, right.” But my buddy, Preecher Williams, grabbed me up last Friday and said, “Come on. You’re coming with me.” We walked into the Wild Horse to a very lively and unexpected scene. There were three guys on stage, Ken Yarbrough on piano, Bo Porter and Merle Haggard Mike Jones and Lyle Mathews on guitars. The audience was glued to their We have a ton of great shows every gesture. I used to run a coming but first and foremost, the club on the Riverwalk in San great honky tonker, Bo Porter, Antonio that was downstairs will return to Port A for a one from a dueling piano bar night performance at Shorty’s (Howl at the Moon) and can this Friday. Porter is a well know attest, those sing-along joints singer-songwriter from the Texas can get mighty rowdy and Hill Country by way of all corners can be a ton of fun. What of the US including Alaska. He impressed me most was these hosts the weekly pickers circle guys are really talented. Ken in Luckenbach and is a regular Yarbrough absolutely knows performer at the storied Gruene his way around the stage and Hall and Broken Spoke (Austin, can hold his own on the piano TX). Bo has an easy going and mic with anyone. I had a baritone voice and a tow sack feeling he was good but had full of heartfelt original songs no idea he was that good. that win you over on the first And Mike Jones is no slouch Bo Porter will play Shorty’s take. If Merle Haggard wasn’t himself. He’s got a great voice in town this weekend, I’d easily this Friday.
