SMA 6th Grade Students Attend Outdoor Camp
Island Moon
A 11
Learning Experience for 6th Graders By Brent Rourk Slowly leaving the island for three days of fun, SMA 6th grade students who packed into the yellow bus, anticipated what they would face at the Outdoor School in Burton, Texas. The objectives were to build teamwork, enjoy nature, and push themselves to their limits and beyond. The question was how they would accomplish those objectives. The ropes course was a challenge for many students as it presented them with opportunities to work together, encourage one another, and trust one another while working through their own personal fears. Many of the students enjoyed the course and the confidence they gained from participating. Working together students pulled the rope that hoisted another student on a giant swing up into the air. That was a favorite for many of the students at the Outdoor School. Sixth grade student Victoria Solarek stated, “I liked the giant swing because it was lots of fun and cool stepping out of my comfort zone, because I went real high in the air. The ropes course was also fun.”
opportunity for building teamwork and camaraderie for the class. I want to thank all of the parent volunteers and chaperones and the staff who made this opportunity possible for the kids.” “They enjoy outdoor sports and evening campfires with the traditional trappings and stories.”, Beeler continued. All of the students made it back safely with countless memories of the fun they shared together and of the confidence they gained.

The Battle of South Texas
Island Moon
Sudoku
Omar Figeroa vs. Jerry Belamontes
by Joe Calvey
“The Battle of South Texas is taking place in California,” Paddy O’Rourke began as he called the waitress over to order yet another Guinness lager. O’Rourke is one of those guys who knows his way around a boxing gym, a dive bar or the betting window of the nearest horse track. I pulled out my pen and notepad. “It’s going to be a pretty one sided battle.” He said draining the last drops of his beer as he waited for the next one. “Omar Figeroa will destroy Corpus Jerry Belamontes.”
Challenging
“This is a fight that should have taken place in Corpus Christi as a main event.” I offered. “Both guys have a lot of fans around here.” “Nah, showcasing Figeroa to a California audience is a smart play by Golden Boy. They’re building up Figeroa to be a super star. He’s got 22 wins, 17 knock out, no losses. Going 12 in that brutal fight against the Japanese guy got him a ton of interest. Belmontes doesn’t stand a chance.” O’Rourke said as the buxom waitress brought him his beer. After she gave him her best come hither smile he told her. “I’ll make sure he tips you good.” All I got the once over from her and a forced tight smile before she left our table at Kody’s in Port Aransas.

“Figeroa has the power, speed and a sneaky lower angle of delivery than most guys with his right hand.” Said O’Rourke who then drained half his beer and reached for my bag of peanuts. “He plain and simple turns lights out. Just ask Abner Cotto, 1st round, lights out in San Antonio. Belamontes is being served up.” I grabbed my laptop and started hitting the keys to put the numbers to the test onWebthese Sudoku - Billions of Free Sudoku Puzzles to Play Online http://view.websudoku.com/ Web Sudoku - Billions of Free Sudoku Puzzles to Play Online two guys. Long ago O’Rourke showed me how to grade any match up. With his Effective Competition Ranking (ECR) of 28 Belamontes trails Figeroa’s 35. Next, I calculated the Effective Competition and Power Ranking (ECPR). Factoring in power Figeroa’s ECPR is 60 while Belamontes is 14.
Just for fun I looked at the ratings I had stored for the Scott and Wilder fight. “Hey Paddy, Scott’s 74 ECPR was dwarfed by Wilder’s 141. No wonder it only took one punch!”

I couldn’t help but wonder why Belamontes is taking a huge leap up in competition when he has a few bad beats to distance himself from? At 25 Belamontes doesn’t need this fight now.

“He’ll probably be stopped around the 6th round but if it goes the distance, and there is no way it goes 12, it’ll be a boring fight if it does, but it won’t. Belamontes gets Daniel Diaz (R) punches Jerry Belamontes hit too much and Figeroa knows what Golden Boy wants and it ain’t no boring fight”. SPORTS
Changing the Outcome
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Sometimes we have to be careful what we ask for. That’s how I feel about instant replay in Major League Baseball. Nothing is ever perfect; that’s why we call it a “game.” In this never-ending effort to always get things right, we lose the spontaneity of the game. I used to celebrate instant jubilation when a touchdown was scored in an NFL game by my favorite team. Now I have to wait for the review, to see if the call stands. It takes something away from the game for me. I do think the Major League players will adjust quickly to instant replay and the broadcasters will find a way to fill the time. Umpires have not resisted instant replay jargon for several years. “Managers now have something they never had before,” said Hall-ofFame Manager, Joe Torre. “They have a chance to change the outcome of a game. Maybe they’ll have fewer sleepless nights.” Okay, I’ll accept that for now, but the real question is, how will instant replay be received by the lifeblood of the sport, the fans?
Not perfect Please understand the reason instant replay is being used in Major League baseball isn’t because the umpires have been bad; it’s because umpires haven’t been perfect. This just in: they will never be perfect even with this system. Baseball, as in life, is not meant to be perfect. Social media allows and encourages instant outrage from fans that enjoy pointing out someone else’s mistakes. In response to this outrage, Major League baseball went back and reviewed every game played in 2013, in an effort to single out any play that would be considered too close to call or a play that may have the qualifications to be reviewed under this new system. There are 2,430 games played during a regular baseball season, and Major League baseball found 50,000 calls that fit the reviewable profile. Guess what! Only 377 of those plays would have been overturned by instant replay. That’s 0.754% or one call overturned for every 6.4 games played, and those numbers would occur only if those 50,000 plays were challenged by the managers. The percentage could easily be lower. These numbers highlight what most baseball fans already knew; professional baseball umpires are better than NBA officials or NFL officials, period. The reasons are easy to decipher. Major League umpires are highly trained in a Minor League system before they reach the Major League level and only have the one job. Since balls and strikes are not part of the instant replay, there are fewer calls to make in a baseball game.
Twelve cameras So here’s the scoop. Each stadium will have twelve camera angles including an overhead cam. Every play is fed into a 9,000-squarefoot command center known as the Replay
Sports Talk
Operations Center. This center is part of MLB Advanced Media offices, located in Manhattan, New York. Inside the center reside eight professional umpires that rotate on a weekly basis along with many technical support people. These folks have access to 30 huge high-definition television sets, and you thought the Pentagon budget was expensive. In a sport where they pound their chest about 300-milliondollar contracts, they will not give us a clue on how much this experiment cost. In an effort to not slow the game down, every play is being reviewed in real time, and these folks will have seen the play in question several times before a manager challenges a call and the on-site umpires ask for a ruling. Fans are also being shown the replays on their own stadium video boards. So, you have to ask yourself was the system really broken. Did it need to be fixed? Does the outcome justify the cost? For those who say that one missed call is too many, I would say that’s not realistic and this system will not guarantee perfection. In fact, no system will;
that’s the beauty of the game. It is as flawed as the people who play the game. I will agree that this is a work in progress. And yes, there have been six overturned calls so far this season. For Clint Hurdle of the Pittsburgh Pirates the system worked, but not for San Francisco Giants’ skipper, Bruce Bochy. My fear is the next step. Why not go ahead and streamline the process and take the manager out of the equation. If the center determines the call is incorrect, they can speak to the umpiring crew within seconds and reverse the call. Now you have completely limited the power of the manager to someone who just fills out the lineup. Is that what you want, as a fan? Perhaps the instant replay system should only be used during the playoffs. What do you think?

Student Athlete or Employee? Student-athlete or employee? Signs at the scorer’s table during some March Madness (NCAA Basketball Division 1 Championship Tournament) games read: “NCAA ScholarAthlete.” Many of us have always believed that young men and women go to college for an education to prepare them for their life’s work. Along the way they may be privileged to participate in the athletic program of their choice. Is this broad definition (some might even say “archaic”) of the student-athlete passé? In today’s environment many athletes are recruited by colleges in anticipation of strictly athletic performance and education takes a back seat. Some NCAA athletes are now claiming that they should have a share in the revenue generated by their play. The NLRB has granted union status to athletes at one noteworthy university by claiming they are employees. The NCAA claims they are student-athletes and not employees. Another recent class action lawsuit against the NCAA asserts that players should be paid part of the income garnered by that organization’s income. Does a tuition-free education including free room and board and a monetary stipend, count as enough pay? Some argue that the “spending money” needs to be increased, while many of those in responsible positions say such money wouldn’t be spent any more wisely than it is now.
Are college athletic programs using their athletes to achieve a successful season and subsequent playoffs, where rich financial rewards await? In order for athletic programs to be successful, coaches justifiably demand rigorous attention and attendance at practices and workouts. How much attention is given to teaching athletes critical thinking, which will be required for most of their lives? Some athletes enter college substantially short of the basic education necessary for them to
s’ O ldes t
succeed academically. Is enough attention paid to achieving baseline academic performance for those individuals? Are those kinds of changes realistic at the university level? Texas AD Patterson’s reaction to the Student Athlete or Employee question: Patterson said last week, “If you’re a football player coming out of high school that decides you want to go to the pros, go take up your issue with [NFL Commissioner] Roger Goodell, the owners, and the union,” That’s your place to go, if you want to go play professional football, if you want to go be an employee.” Patterson has a clear interest in keeping student-athletes from becoming studentemployees. If players in any sport must be paid, Patterson’s job instantly gets a lot harder — and his compensation inevitably gets lower. Apart from paying players, Patterson would have many other headaches he doesn’t currently have, if the Longhorns sports teams exercise their eventual right to collectively bargain for better conditions or benefits or anything else that currently falls within the discretion of the school and the NCAA. Patterson’s knee-jerk reaction seems more like the anger phase of the five-step process of dealing with bad news. But if more NCAA schools adopt his “if you want to be employees, get out of here” message, then the NFL no longer would be hurting college football programs by welcoming players straight out of high school; the NFL possibly would be helping them. Indeed, that could be something the NCAA eventually requests from the NFL. A decade after the league incorporated the three-year rule into the CBA to make it bulletproof from a legal standpoint as a bouquet for college football, college football may decide that having a path to paid football programs makes players less likely to be deemed “employees” when the initial ruling from the NLRB in the Northwestern case snakes its way through the full legal process. Of course, none of it will matter if/when Jeffrey Kessler’s antitrust-based lawsuit against the NCAA succeeds. For college sports, Kessler’s plan presents a far greater threat. Your thoughts regarding Student Athlete or Employee will be greatly appreciated. Please call the Benchwarmers between 3 and 6 PM weekdays at 361-560-5397 or call or Email Dotson. “Are they really Student Athletes?”
What is a college degree worth today? A recent television program interviewed athletes on the subject of class attendance and major selection. More than a few said their college major was “General Studies” or “Multidisciplinary Studies,” and regular attendance was not mandatory. The vast majority of college athletes do not go onto professional careers and thus enter the world of work with a degree (if one has even been granted) that is not of much value.

Auctions, Dancing, Games, and Food Support Island Schools Tables filled up quickly as a large, eager crowd of 250 boot-toting and prize-bidding would be dancers gathered to enjoy a night at Whisky River on Staples in Corpus Christi Sunday evening. A BBQ tent outside fed the guests before they canvassed the inside where bidding on a multitude of fantastic silent auction items was hot and heavy. But the evening was just beginning for all of those who came to support the Island Foundation Schools annual ‘Whoop It Up’ fundraiser.
including countless valuable auction items and to The Island Moon Newspaper. The fundraising committee worked tirelessly to make this event the marquee evening that it is, and Whiskey River, as always, provided a fabulous venue and top service.
All proceeds from the evening’s festivities are earmarked to help the Island Foundation Schools as they begin sizeable construction projects as part of their growth. This year ‘Whoop It Up’ raised a record $44,000. Although the funds will not cover the cost of the various school improvements, they will, as Ms. Beeler commented, “Put us one step closer to new facilities for all of the schools.”

The live auction featured a fantastic group of items including a hunting trip, a weekend in Fredericksburg, a fishing trip, a beach party, a Kent Ullberg sculpture, a Duck Dynasty signed duck call (sold for $1,700), and more. The bidding was lively on these treasured live auction items, and all for a terrific cause.

SMA Principal Barbara Beeler stated, “I would like to thank all of the volunteers who put in countless hours, especially Roberta Soward, Jen Cain, and Lisa Scheerer, who chaired the event.” Besides the dancing and the lip smackin’ BBQ, the auctions gained constant attention as folks crowded around the silent auction tables for a couple of hours placing bids on dozens of silent auction items, highlighted by a stunning painting by Timi Abney (sold for $3,200) and a fine hand-crafted desk by Jeff Blue. There were too many other silent auction items to list.

A few games involving the enthusiastic crowd preceded a ‘live auction’ where several guests won some fabulous items. The jail was busy as SMA Principal Barbara Beeler and several others spent time behind bars before being ‘bought out’ by the lively crowd. Sore knees during/after a workout
If your knees get sore during or shortly after a workout, the fix can be as easy as adding 1 minute to the pre-workout stretch or post workout routine.
Why Do Knees Get Sore? Because of the large response in typical athletes in the growth of the quads and the glutes and because of the incredible hormone response from the high-intensity workouts that have become extremely popular, there appears to be an increase in the condition of upper leg imbalance that is becoming somewhat routine in my clinic. In essence, the quads (muscles of the front thigh) are OVERSTRONG in ratio to hamstring strength. (muscles on the back of the thigh) When this becomes imbalanced, typically I will see a low grade patellar tendon hypertonicity or tendonitis. Pain to the lower area of the knee cap especially when the athlete has the knees bent (as is common at work, school desk or in the car) becomes increasingly annoying and occasional debilitating.
is at the proximal end near the glutes. (butt muscles) I prefer lying prone with your knees bent and the heels digging into a chair. Get situated so the knees are at 90 degrees and use the hamstrings and lower glutes to do a hip thruster. Go slow, activate the big part of the hamstring and glutes. Put your hands right there to make sure you are making the hams fire. These are easy and in a few short days, you’ve stretched the quads and re-activated the hamstrings so that the balance and ratio are getting back to the right state. 2 sets of 10 are all you’ll need. It seems that classic training seems to only address one aspect, stretch or strengthen. I’m saying do both to get the fastest, most efficient results. In our office we call these combo’s of stretch and strengthen at the same time “hacks.” As I stated before, there is no one reason why the quads are growing faster and at a quicker rate than the hamstring. More than likely it is any one or a mix of the following: technique, form, hormone response, genetics (muscle composition) or just that High Intensity workouts wake up the lower body better than most programs and there is a focus on squatting in a lot of exercises. This will elicit a greater quad response. Most likely it is a combination of all these factors.
How Can I Fix It?
by Devorah Fox devorahfox.com SandFest 2014 brings a festival of ephemeral art to Port Aransas Friday through Sunday, April 11 through 13, 2014. This is the 18th Annual Texas SandFest. More than a dozen world-class master sculptors and hundreds of amateurs will create stunning works of art using sand and water. One huge wind gust or wave can easily destroy these fragile creations and by the end of the weekend they are gone forever, making them all the more special. The festival features another ephemeral art form: live music. Think about it: you no sooner hear music than it’s gone, not to be performed live exactly the same way ever again. Various bands will entertain throughout the three days but I am most looking forward to hearing the Sand Band. I first heard the band at the now-shuttered Tarpon Ice House during SandFest last year. The Sand Band was awesome and the place was packed. Now that I’ve learned the secret behind that performance I’m even more impressed.

The Sand Band is a five piece musical group whose origins are in Port Aransas. In September, 2012, Alan White was lying in bed in Yukon, Oklahoma one night and began thinking of a way he could play his congas and bongos more frequently. At the time, he was playing with a Dallas based TropRock band called The Bad Monkeys. So the next day Alan called Kelly Brown, the front man for the Bad Monkeys and Mike Eiras, an incredibly talented vocalist and guitarist from Austin. Alan asked them if they would be interested in playing somewhere in Port A if the opportunity arose. Both said they would love to do that. Alan’s next move was to find a place in Port A for them to play, not an easy thing to do while in Yukon, OK. However one day White called the Tarpon Ice HOuse , explained the situation and, knowing the odds were remote, said he was looking for a place to play on Friday of SandFest. The answer was an immediate yes. Alan was surprised to have booked an unknown, unnamed group on that day. Of course it helped when he said the band would be bringing 60 or 70 Parrotheads (Jimmy Buffett fans) from all over Texas. (Alan’s a member of both the Parrot Heads of Port Aransas and the Cedar Creek Lake Parrot Head club.)

Mike Eiras – Mike’s musical roots go back 20 years. He has played in groups from Alabama to Texas and points in between. Mike is a virtuoso guitarist. Alan said he would put him up against any guitarist he has ever met. In addition, Eiras is a gifted singer/songwriter. Randy Brooks – Randy is the bassist. However, he also plays the guitar and banjo. Randy is a regular in the Nashville music scene. He has written many, many songs for himself and others. His most famous tune is “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” (yes, that one!). He currently travels all over the United States singing his tunes and delivering his homespun humor.
Louie Chambers –Much of the lead instrumentation not performed by Eiras is done by Louie, the keyboardist. He has played for many Dallas groups; however, the most famous artist he toured with was LeAnn Rimes. Alan White – Alan plays all kinds of percussion but for The Sand Band it is congas and bongos. There are no other drums in the band. He has the unique ability in any given song to make his hand drums sound like a regular drum kit and back to hand drums and does so without an audience noticing there are not two drummers. He also plays the guitar and piano. The Sand Band will perform on Friday night, April 11, from 7 to 11 at Stingray’s, 401 Beach Ave., and again Sunday, April 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the SandFest tent. They’ll also play in October, 2014, for the Parrot Heads of Port Aransas WINGS 2014 fundraiser with the Bad Monkeys. This full seven- piece band features vocalist Sharon Oefinger. I’ll see you there.

From where I rocked out in the audience, all I heard was great music. I had no idea then that the evening was essentially impromptu.
The Sand Band is made up of:
Fast forward to April, 2013. Upon arriving in Port A, Alan contacted Paul Fain, the owner of the Tarpon. Paul said the booking was good to go. During the course of that month, Kelly Brown talked the bass player and the keyboard player for the Bad Monkeys into coming also. Paul Fain needed a name for the band. Alan said, “Well, we’ve never played or practiced together, but since we are playing during SandFest, we will call ourselves The Sand Band.

TropRock songs and many of Brown’s and Eiras’s original tunes, plugged in at the Tarpon, and commenced to rock the place. The group was so on that night, that in addition to Parrot Heads, many people came in off the street to see who was playing. Alan says “Inasmuch as we had never played together it was the quintessential jam session. Louie Chambers, keyboardist, said it was the most musical fun he had ever had.”
Kelly Brown – the frontman for The Bad Monkeys. Kelly is the rhythm guitarist and vocalist. Many of the songs played by the group were written by Brown. (For a sample, check out this YouTube video, http://youtu.be/ KzXj0bxyxnw, which features Kelly Brown and his original “Song of the Ocean.”) He has been a musician in the Dallas area for over 20 years. As the driving force of the Monkeys, he has performed all over the country.

This is a very reversible and easy condition to fix and should also show an increase in performance as the body gets back into the preferred ratio. To fix this issue, add some easy quad stretches (I prefer Active Isolated Stretch {AIS}) and hamstring strengthening exercises. To add to that advice, don’t waste time strengthening the hams with traditional machinery, bending the knee with weights attached low will most likely just irritate the tendonitis anyway and the beef of the hamstring

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Scattered shots… It’s been another super week of great live music in my world! I joined some friends for Carol Elliott’s performance at the all new Black Marlin Bar and Grill at the Palmilla Beach Golf Resort last Thursday. I gotta say, it was a very nice setting for this early evening show. I believe they plan to make these Thursday shows a regular event. Carol Elliott I know Uel Jackson is performed at the playing there next week. new Black Marlin On Friday, our pals Bar and Grill last from Austin, Mandy week in Port A Rowden and Billy Abel, returned to Shorty’s for an outstanding performance. I really love those guys. They have a special chemistry I haven’t seen since Noel McKay and Brennan Leigh. On Saturday, I had two shows on my agenda: Jake Ward and the Coastal Riders at Giggity’s and The Dirty River Boys (El Paso, TX) at Brewster Street Ice House. Jake Ward is the new kid on the block that has my ears perked. He won the “battle of the bands” competition at Brewster last year where the winner got to open Ziegfest. My fiddling buddy, Owen Fitzsimmons (Independent Thieves) plays with them occasionally and told me to check ‘em out. I must say these young lads are fresh and tight and did an outstanding job. The crowd absolutely loved them. They played all the happening Americana hits with a smattering of originals, and did so with enthusiasm, showing real talent and stage presence. Watch for the boys… they’re going be somebody someday. The Dirty River Boys have easily become one of my favorite bands. They have a special brand of “outlaw folk” that is all their own. It’s fast and rowdy, yet gentle and harmonic at the same time. Their show at Brewster was fairly well attended, but everyone there was definitely one of those rabid fans who knew all the words to every song. They’ll be at the Back Porch at the end of July.
Jake Ward and the Coastal Riders played Giggity’s last Saturday DO NOT MISS LIST SandFest 2014… The big news this weekend is SandFest 2014. By the time you read this column, our little sandbar will have been invaded by, shall we say, a whole bunch of people… as in several multitudes. Last year’s numbers were around 100,000, so get ready for a traffic snarl of monstrous proportions. Trust me and take advantage of the shuttle services at Sharkey’s
and Robert’s Point Park or find some way to circumvent the traffic by walking or biking… and set your patience meter to high. But, once you get out there, it’s well worth the effort. This family friendly event is our shining star. A small army of professional and amateur sand sculptors will spend three days creating the most mind blowing creations you can imagine.
SandFest weekend is upon us. Here sculptors are seen in the early stages of creating Monument Mountain. Photo by Miles Merwin And that’s not all! There is non-stop music, food and craft vendors of every description and even sandcastle building lessons for kids. I’ll be playing stage manager at the music tent this year, so stop by and say howdy. Here’s the band schedule: Friday: Jared Clark (12-2), Mike Stites (2:30-4), Melissa Brooke Band (4:306:30) Saturday: Rae Ann & the Ride (10-12), Triggerfish (12:30-2), Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (2:304), Passing Strangers (4:30-6:30)
Melissa Brooke played SandFest 2012, 2013 and will play twice this year. This pic is from 2012.
Sunday: Ken & Mike Show (10-11), Sand Band (11:30-1), Kara & the Dam Band (1:30-3:30), Awards Ceremony (3:30-4:30), Melissa Brooke Band (4:30-6:30)
Shelley King… To say there’s a lot going on in town this weekend is a gross understatement. On Friday, one of the greatest blues/gospel/ roots voices on the planet, Shelley King, will grace the little stage at Shorty’s with a solo performance. This woman is literally all Shelley King will over the map. Aside from play Shorty’s on her solo performance, Friday. she tours and performs regularly with several musical units including Carolyn Wonderland, Girls With Bad Intentions (Lisa Morales and Robyn Ludwick), the Young Ancients (members of the great New Orleans roots band the Subdudes) and her own band of ever changing stellar Austin musicians. Shelley was named the official “Texas State Musician” in 2008 by Governor Rick Perry and shares those honors with Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver and Ray Benson.
