Living in the Shadows

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon On December 29, 2012, Ruth Ann Steinhagen passed away at the age of 83, in Chicago, Illinois. Who is Ruth Steinhagen you ask? She was once the 19-year-old young, obsessed woman, who had a crush on the Chicago Cubs first baseman Eddie Waitkus. Eddie was one of the stars on the Chicago Cubs team and was currently hitting .306. On August 24, 1947, he became one of only six players since 1920, to hit an inside-the-park grand slam. He was also selected to the 1948 National League All-Star team.

had dreamed many times of killing Eddie Waitkus, because he had left Chicago to play for Philadelphia. Waitkus nearly died several times while on the operating table, before the bullet could be removed. It had just missed his heart. She continued to write him letters from prison and even had his picture taped on the wall of her cell. The judge determined she was legally insane and committed her to a prison with a mental hospital. She was diagnosed as being schizophrenic and received shock treatments. Interestingly, she was declared sane three years later and released.

Ruth had become a Cubs fan at the age of 16 and attended as many games as she could. So infatuated with The aftermath Waikus was Ruth that she set Eddie Waitkus survived the a place for him at her table at shooting as Roy Hobbs (Robert home for dinner every night Redford) did in the movie, but even though she had never was not able to play in the 1949 met him. Eddie later used the name Roy Hobbs in the movie. became withdrawn, and suspicious of others.

A deadly plot In December of the 1948 season, 29-year-old Eddie Waitkus was traded by the Cubs to the Philadelphia Phillies. Ruth was so upset, she decided to kill Waitkus. On June 14, 1949, when the Phillies came to Wrigley to play the Cubs, Ruth had her chance. Steinhagen used the name Ruth Ann Burns, an alias of a former high-school classmate of Eddie’s, and checked into the Edgewater Beach Hotel, where the Phillies were staying. She then left Waitkus a note at the front desk. She invited Eddie to her room. The note said, “We’re not acquainted, but I have something of importance to speak to you about.” Eddie showed up at her room, #1297, and she answered the door. Since he did not recognize her, she stated that her friend wanted to see him, but was gone and would be back in just a minute. He took a seat as she walked to a nearby closet. Ruth then returned with a .22 caliber rifle and said, “I have a surprise for you. If I can’t have you, nobody else can,” and shot him in the chest below his heart. Steinhagen then called the front desk and reported the shooting. If she had not made that phone call, Waitkus would have bled to death. Then she kneeled by his side and held his head in her arms, until the authorities came. After she had been arrested, she told the psychiatrist that she

He began to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and suffered a failed marriage. Eddie Waitkus eventually suffered a nervous breakdown because of the shooting and died at the age of 53, on September 16, 1973, eleven years before the movie was released. So, the question for me becomes as follows. Ruth Steinhagen was 55-years-old and alive when the movie The Natural was released in 1984. Did she know about the movie and did she know it was about her? It’s one thing to avoid abhorrent examples such as Rice’s; but better to observe positive models and say “that’s the way I want to do it”.

The poll was conducted by phone, with 806 New Jersey adults taking part from April 11 to 14.

There’s little argument about the fate of Rutgers’ former basketball coach Mike Rice: he had to go. A large majority of those who took part in a recent Monmouth University/ Asbury Park Press poll viewed his firing as an appropriate outcome to his behavior…But not all.

The poll also cast light on how Garden State residents feel about sports at Rutgers. Fortyfour percent of those polled say Rutgers puts the appropriate amount of emphasis on sports compared to 31 percent who maintain that it places too much emphasis on its athletic programs.

Twelve percent said Rice should not have been fired after a video surfaced showing Rice physically abusing players and calling them gay slurs and other names and 6 percent were unsure,

The controversy did not put much of a dent in Rutgers’ reputation on the whole as a university. Not many participants said it changed the way they perceive Rutgers. Only 6 percent of those said they would “actively discourage” a high school senior from attending Rutgers because of the incident.

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

How I spent my weekend… It was another eventful week here on our little sandbar. I started the weekend at the Tarpon Ice House for Carol Elliott’s happy hour gig. Elliott’s vast inventory of music is always fun. She jumped in the way-back machine and treated us to some stuff she hadn’t done in a while. Her version of the Shake Russell song, You’ve Got a Lover, particularly blew me away. So did her original a capella song, Sergeant York. I’m always amazed at that gal’s voice… what range. And she had a couple of guests to sit in: Father James Derkits from our Trinity By the Sea Episcopal Church graced us with an original composition that came to him while Justin Stewart visiting Big Bend State played a couple Park, and his priest of tunes at Carol friend from Austin, Elliott’s gig at Justin Stewart held the the Ice House last audience spellbound. Friday After Elliott’s show,

The Ones performed for the Sunset Sounds Concert Series at Robert’s Point Park in Port A last Friday we ran over to Patsy Jones Amphitheater at Robert’s Point Park to catch the last set of The One’s as they kicked off Port A Parks and Rec Department’s Sunset Sounds Concert Series. I love this event. It’s family friendly, “bring your own lawn chair and ice chest,” right by the ferry landing. Total Port A charm. These shows occur once a month through the summer and I’ll keep you posted. Later Friday night I caught a set from Southern country-rockers, Charlie Hagar and the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rogue, LA) who were at the Back Porch. These guys are loaded with mostly original material and when requested to play a cover, only came up with a Waylon Jennings number. You gotta love that! These guys are gritty and bow to no one.

DO NOT MISS LIST Finishing out April… I’ll run down the last two weeks of April for you. The duo, Moon Light Social (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch on Friday, April 19. They are produced by Asleep at the Wheel frontman, Jason Maddox, Tony Sceracene and Sky Ray Benson, and have been turning a lot of Malone performed at the Open Jam last heads. On Saturday, April 20th, the all female Sunday at the Ice House bluegrass outfit from Boston, Della Mae, will Control (Corpus Christi). I’ve always thought play the Porch. I have been looking forward these guys had some amazing harmonies but I to this show for weeks. Their fiddle player is was completely blown away listening to these a two-time National Fiddle Champion and this voices work together on that song. They’ll be band literally plays all over the world having back at the Porch over Memorial Day Weekend. recently returned from a 42 day trip of Central Asia (Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, And after that… Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) as part of a State Department exchange. Also On Sunday, I again started on the 20th, Lela Caldwell’s one woman early. Uel Jackson has been electronic music and laser show will light playing the Back Porch on up Shorty’s and the Port A Airport will Sunday’s from 3-6. I started host an open house with Hy Eddleman off there and then moved to and others. On Thursday, April 25th, the Shorty’s for the Roy Cox internationally acclaimed Gypsy Kings memorial. Some of Roy’s old will play Concrete Street. I saw them once musician friends had come in in San Antonio and can tell you this is one from out of town and treated not to miss. The two principal members us to some great music… as of this band are brothers who were the did some of the locals who offspring of Spanish gypsy families that knew and played with Roy for years. Mike Williams played Marilynn Sullivan fled to France to escape Spain’s Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, a few with Roy Hodges on performs the broom working harvests and making music. On violin and Kit Gutherz on solo to Harvest Friday, April 26th, SandFest 2013 begins its tuba. Sky Malone came down from Padre to lend his Moon with Dennis three day weekend on the beach in Port A. Expect 100,000 people to invade our little Sullivan talents. Tony Sceracene, island for this world-class sand sculpting Jason Maddox & Carrie competition. The music tent will host such Denniston made the trek from Swinney Switch and really made the day. Sceracene (electric local acts as The Ones, Raeanne & the Ride, lead guitar) and Maddox (acoustic guitar and Cord Carpenter, Flatbroke, Rich Lockhart & the mother of original vocals) are extra talented. I was totally The Palipha Starry Band. Expect th impressed. Later the memorial spilled over to all traffic jams. Also on the 26 , the Parrothead the open jam at the Ice House. It was historic. friendly Sand Band will play the Tarpon Ice Everyone got into the act and it sounded like House; blues maestro J.T. Coldfire (Austin, we’d all played together for years. Uel Jackson did a great job of keeping the music rolling. For me, the highlight of the evening was when Dennis Sullivan played his spot-on cover of the Neil Young song, Harvest Moon. I’d never noticed it before but there was a background swishing sound during the course of the song. Dennis’ wife Marilyn Sullivan put a mic on the

My vote here goes to the Krayolas… I love their spiffy outfits. On Saturday, April 27th, Americana veteran¸ Houston Marchman plays the Porch; blues and classic rockers, the Rich Lockhart Band plays Giggity’s; scalding Latin funk rockers, Vallejo (Austin, TX) plays the Executive Surf Club; and local troubadour, Jered Wolfjaw Clark plays the Upper Deck.

A quick glance at May… Highlights for May (more details as the weeks progress): Larry Joe Taylor, Thomas Michael Riley, Will Owen Gage, Ryan Bingham, Austin Heat, Samantha Aiken, W.C. Clark, Antone & the All Stars, Get Off the Lawn, Lost Fabulocos, The Tarpon Music Bash, Jesse Dayton, Rubin Limas, The Songwriter Showcase, The Dynamics Reunion, Gary P. Nunn, Todd Dorn, Hold Fast Fables, Buster Jiggs, Mandy Rowden, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys, Freddy Steady Krc and Cam King. That ought to get your attention. And that’s the truth!

Live Music

And then… Saturday started early with Three Way Street playing the big 67th Anniversary celebration of Shorty’s Place. They started the party in the afternoon which worked well with the benefit for our pal, James Hayes, over at Bernie’s. James has been battling cancer and the community came together with some much needed financial help. Stay strong brother! On Saturday night I went by the Porch just in time to catch an amazing rendition of the song, Seven Bridges Road, by the big ten piece party band Cruise
