Riley P. Dog continued from A1 I had a good life and have been living large since I first came to The Island in 2001 and it was just by pure luck that I got here. I escaped from my pen in Olmos Park when I was a puppy on a stormy night and that’s when I met the humans that took me in and gave me a good life – fourteen years is a pretty good run for a dog and I got to do a lot of fun stuff along the way. I have no complaints.

How many dogs can say they bit Lighthouse Rick twice and lived to tell the tale? Sorry Rick, I just never liked motorcycles. And I should also apologize to my human friend Jason for biting him when he parachuted onto the beach; Sorry Jason, you surprised me, but on the bright side the picture made the cover of Skydive magazine.

for the flowers and good wishes as I near the end of my journey. Please give my hotdogs to my friends.

And thanks to all my friends at the Back Porch who were so nice to me for all these years, and to my friends at the Flats for all the treats. I have been one lucky dog. So long to my friend Peanut who went to Dog Heaven the same day I got sick. I’ll miss Snarlin’ Darlin.

To my human friends on Padre Island I say, build a dog park. Island dogs deserve it and you can do it.

I was on my fourth life when I finally ran out of time. My second life started after a bad man poisoned me in Longview, but I survived and I got to chase a lot of squirrels there so things evened out. My next life was after I got attacked by a giant dog in Alamo Heights. It was touch and go there for a while but I made it through all the way to now.

Fenceball

Baseball does not follow suit. Not only do most parks differ in dimensions, but also in the height and distance of their outfield fences.

Today’s baseball parks, old or new, offer many nooks and crannies. Sharp angles, high or low outfield fences, catwalks, dugouts and even bullpens within foul territory, all help each park take on its own personality. Oops, I gave it away! That’s right, foul territory and fences are the key words. You see, baseball is the only game where you can play outside the lines, or in foul territory. In other words, the game of baseball is not confined to the playing surface.

In no other sport do we go over the ground rules with the opposition before playing the game.

Evolution Here’s how this evolution occurred: Before parks were built to seat fans who wished to see the game, there were natural boundaries such as hills, rivers, trees and even train tracks.

The so-called home runs were few, and seats were eventually added, when too many fans showed up to simply stand and watch. World Series games were actually played at the turn of the century, where fans formed a semicircle in the outfield or perhaps a human fence to create boundaries. As the popularity of the game increased with more home runs, so did the number of seats in the park. Each park was built within the space available, in cities or neighborhoods, and, therefore, different dimensions were created.

Eventually, seats were also added in most outfields, creating a permanent barrier between a ball in play and a home run. The playing area made up of three bases and home plate are the same dimensions in every ballpark, but the area of foul territory and distance to the outfield fences were determined by the space left over inside the park, after seating had been added.

The results can easily be seen; Fenway Park and Wrigley field have virtually no foul territory down the left-field lines, while Camden Yards and Globe Life Park have very little space down the right-field lines.

The height of the fences also differs in each park, with the 37-foot high “Green Monster” in Boston being the highest, to the five-foot

leftfield fence at Tropicana Field in Tampa.

It’s the amount of foul territory, the home run, and the fact that the game can be decided by plays made outside the field of play, that make baseball unique and different from other professional sports.

Baseball?

So why call it baseball? The game started as a stick and ball contest where the pitcher actually allowed the batter to put the ball in play, in order to move players from one base to another, to score runs. With no fences, there was no such thing as a home run. It was simply called a four-base hit. That’s how the name of the game evolved from a game of bases to being called baseball. Shouldn’t we now change the name of this game? Home runs used to be reserved for sluggers. Every year, more home runs are hit; and every year, they become cheaper and cheaper.

Fenceball?

Ty Cobb said it best in 1919 and was perhaps way ahead of his time. The “Georgia Peach” said, “The home run could wreck baseball.

It throws out a lot of strategy and makes it fenceball.” Fenceball, there’s the change.

Change the name of this game to fenceball.

That’s really what the game has come to. The bases seem to get in the way of today’s game.

No doubt, Cobb was not ready for “The Babe” and the “Big Bang” approach to the game. In Cobb’s time the game had been described as “little ball,” where the ability to manufacture runs separated the great teams from the rest of the pack. It went against everything Ty practiced and believed about team offense. In the many games that Cobb and Ruth played against each other, Cobb continued to out-hit, out-score and out-play Ruth, only to have “The Bambino” cheered by fans all day. Fenceball.

That kind of grows on me and describes the game today so much better. The focus is now on power, distance, fences and scoring, not bases. The bases are simply out there to provide the hitter with directions to home plate.

It’s time for a change, a major change. No other professional sport could attempt this kind of change. Why, because most major sports are confined to a specific playing area, or boundaries. Games of basketball, football and hockey are played in areas with identical dimensions. That means the individual playing areas used by each separate sport are the same width, height and length. The surface of these areas may be different, as in grass vs. turf in football, hardwood vs. parquet floors in basketball, or soft vs. hard ice in hockey rinks, but they offer no advantage when it comes to dimensions.

SMA 2014 Co-rec Soccer Team with Coach Hudson photo by Shannon Trial

By Brent Rourk The black and white ball gets kicked, passed, headed, and kicked again in the SMA gymnasium under the watchful eye of new SMA soccer coach Kevin Hudson. Players learn to control the ball better; catch it, redirect it, and pass it with accuracy. They practice various skills every day so that they will be able to play a fast and ball control game. As skills improve so too does the SMA co-rec soccer team.

Coach Hudson looks at improvement as a constant. He stated, “I am really focused on soccer skills and for each player to be better at the end of the year in at least one part of their game. We have quite a few players who have played some soccer and a handful of girls and boys who have played fairly high level age group competitive soccer.”

Soccer Experience Hudson brings passion for the game of soccer along with experience. “I played club and recreational soccer as well as several seasons of arena soccer. I also played all of the normal sports like football, basketball and baseball. I played hockey in high school and on a college club team years ago. Hockey and soccer are very similar in terms of creating space to play and have similar strategies.”, submitted Hudson.

He has coached both recreational and competitive soccer, and his most recent soccer coaching experience included coaching the Encinitas Express Soccer Club in Encinitas, California.

The players are benefitting from Coach Hudson’s experience. SMA player Brennan Carnley said, “I enjoy that we are active and we feel it. I am learning defense and am improving on speed and agility. The new coach is bringing his experience so that we can improve”.

Getting Touches The mixed team (both boys and girls and kids from 5th through 8th grade) practices in the SMA gymnasium. Is that an advantage or disadvantage? At this point, Hudson sees advantages, claiming, “I am a huge believer in coaching soccer that each kid touches the ball as many times as possible. The way to do that is keep the practice field small and play lots of small-sided games 2v2, 3v3 etc.”

Hudson sees the positive claiming, “It forces every player to be involved in every drill. If we were on a big field all the time for practice and playing 11v11, there would be kids who never got a chance to touch the ball. So far I have not seen it be a disadvantage at all.”

SMA soccer player Alana Miskovic stated, “The coach has us running a lot so that we can improve our form and run fast. He teaches us how to control the ball and not be aggressive”.

When asked what he sees the team doing now Hudson was quick to reply, “In the few weeks that we have been practicing, I have seen a marked improvement in basic soccer skills and even more improvement in the understanding of playing wide and creating space on the field.

I love to see good soccer and really value that over kids who are simply athletic who run around without a purpose on the field. “

The Competition Currently, there are 30-35 student-athletes who attend practices. An early season record of 1-1-1 has given both the coach and players hope for future success. Hudson stated, “We are currently 1-1-1 with our loss coming from an all-boys London ISD team of all 7th and 8th grade players. Our win and tie came against teams playing with 9 or 10 of the 11 allowable players being boys… I try to take an equal

number of boys and girls to each game and will typically have an equal mix of both on the field at any time.”

Hudson appears very pleased with the team so far stating, “In our 3 games, I have not seen a team that was purely un-skilled or poorly coached. The overall effort from all of the teams we have played has been high and the games have been entertaining. I could not be more pleased with the effort of our players from whistle to whistle. Very proud of them.”

Strengths and Goals Closely monitoring the SMA players individually and the team, Hudson assessed team strengths, “I believe our core group plays extremely hard and very fast. We defend the ball very well and we are learning to play in wide to create space. As they mature as players and we have more practice time, we will see more and more improvement in ball control and dictating the pace of the game to the opponent.”

In terms of improvement goals Hudson confided, “For a player to improve they must touch the ball all of the time. You will find that really good players will have their foot on the ball or be juggling it all the time. They will play wall ball by themselves for hours which teaches them to pass to a spot and then when the ball comes back to them to stop it with one touch and set up for the next pass or shot.”

Looking towards the future Hudson stated, “Once you have a team of kids who can handle the ball really well and have decent fitness and speed, the sky is the limit in terms of what you can teach them. We are not there yet with all of the kids but every one of them has improved and has learned new drills and skills that will help them if they choose to continue playing for their club or school teams.”

Player Ryan Gibbs stated, “We all work together as a team. We do a good job of getting Teddy the ball to score goals. We are learning a lot of ball control.”

The players are beginning to see each other as belonging to a team. Theodore Libby claimed, “The team works very well with each and I think that we are more powerful this year.

Playing attacking center-mid, Theodore enjoys the competition because it is pretty equal. He continued, “Some of the teams we are playing are very skilled and we are competing with them.”

Hudson is clearly satisfied with progress so far and sees big potential for SMA soccer.

After evaluating the SMA team thus far he proposed, “Soccer is a game that is beautiful if played well. With the wide difference in soccer skills and experience at SMA, we are not at the beautiful level yet but we aren’t playing ugly either.”

Continuing, Hudson offered, “That being said, I am really pleased with the effort and progress as a whole. I will never be satisfied if I can’t get the most out of each player who really wants to be there and learn. That is on me. Games are a reward for working and learning at practice. The players who do that will improve and become solid players and even better teammates. My satisfaction comes from knowing I can trust a player to be where they are supposed to be on the field and give huge effort. The wins take care of themselves after that.”

Playing all of its games at the IWA fields, the SMA team seems to be gaining confidence as the season progresses. Hopefully, we continue to hear ‘G-O-L SMA!’ Hats off to the new soccer coach and the 35 dedicated SMA players who attend practice and work hard together on the field.

PACT'S Annual Meeting will be held at PACT on Thursday, May 29th, at 6:00 pm. PACT will elect officers during that meeting.

Keep Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB) and the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate a belated Earth Day with a plant swap set for Saturday, May 3.

This summer solution for parents is filling fast, so REGISTER NOW. The weekly camps are available for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, offers several different ways to will include book swapping and receiving print cartridges and old eyeglasses.

They will be 8:30 am-5:30 pm, with early and late drop-off for an extra fee

It will take place at the parks and recreation department front yard, 739 W. Ave. A on the corner of Cut Off Road.

Each camp will have a different theme, but all will include activities like art projects, music and movies to enhance that week’s theme. Many will be indoors, but campers will have outdoor time too. Camps will include field trips such as swimming, bowling, hiking at Nature Preserve, Texas State Aquarium, Lexington, Port Aransas Community Theatre and much more.

Master gardeners and Parks and Recreation employees Mike McClure and Colleen Foreman will be on site to help and answer questions.

Residents can clean up their yards and bring plants, trees, cuttings, bulbs or seeds to share with others in the community.

Don’t have anything to share? Come get some anyway and help beautify your part of Port Aransas.

Guardians Rescue Looking for Volunteers

By Terri Cotten Guardians Rescue is a foster-based rescue on The Island. We are in need of volunteers to help on the weekends at our adoption events that are usually held on Sat/Sun at Ace Hardware.

Some areas that help is needed: set-up/break-down kennels, talking to potential adopters, walking dogs, cleaning cages, etc.

Perfect for students for community service, retirees or anyone who wants to make a difference and help save lives.

As a foster-based rescue, we rely on foster homes to socialize and get them to events. We can only save an animal if we have a foster home in place and available funds for vetting.

Registration is open now for the next lifeguard class at the Port Aransas Community Pool.

KPAB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to promote public interest to create a more beautiful Port Aransas through volunteerism and education. It also is an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful.

The class will be Monday through Friday, June 2-6.

The Lifeguard American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be 9 am - 5 pm for ages 15+.

Learn lifesaving skills to help keep people safe in, on and around the water.

Port A Parks and Recreation is bringing the first event in the Tri the Beach Triathlon Series to town, and registration is open now.

The 600 meter ocean swim, 12 mile bike course and 2 mile beach run for all ages will be held on Saturday, June 21. The Parks and Recreation Tri and the Beach sponsored race has distances for the newest or inexperienced triathlete can participate yet course is unique and challenging enough for an experienced triathlete.

The swim will be an “out & back” open water swim in the ocean starting at Horace Caldwell Pier swimming roughly 600 meters in the ocean. Bike race will be on Port A streets. Run includes an “out & back” run starting at the pier. Event will start promptly at 8 am. Register at www.trithebeach.com, click on Port Aransas Triathlon. Local Growth Picks Up in April

The latest reading of the local Business Cycle Index indicates that the economy of Corpus Christi has picked up momentum, after some signs of slowing down by the end of last year. All of the four economic indicators that make up this composite index posted a gain in March.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a truck that got stuck off-road and started a fire near Sea Pines and El Socorro Loop on Padre Island Sunday afternoon. Large amounts of smoke went through the neighborhood and even across the Laguna Madre and into Flour Bluff. The Corpus Christi Fire Department extinguished the fire and found the truck stuck and burned. The Corpus Christi Police Officers found an 18-year-old man who was the passenger of the truck.

The 18-year-old man identified the 18-year-old driver and owner of the truck. No injuries were reported and the only property damage reported was the truck which was a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The 18-year-old driver of the pickup fled the scene before law enforcement arrived and Officers had not located the 18-year-old driver of the truck by this report. The Officers are investigating the 18-yearold driver of the truck as a suspect in Criminal Trespass and Reckless Destruction.

According to Texas Workforce Commission's statistical releases today, the Corpus Christi metro area added a total of 2,500 nonfarm jobs in March. Except education and health services, all sectors posted gains over the month. The leisure and hospitality sector added 1,100 jobs, due largely to Spring Break activity. The impact of the Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas drilling activity has continued to show up in the mining and construction sector, with an expansion of about 3 percent in employment during the past month, and almost 6 percent over the past year.

The Corpus Christi unemployment rate dipped to 5.1 percent in March, half of one percentage point lower than the rate for the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2013, the metro area has gained nearly 4,500 jobs and its jobless rate has improved by nearly one full percentage point. The South Texas economy is thriving. The latest unemployment rate for the Coastal Bend area is below the 5 percent benchmark at 4.9 percent..

that has the biggest ears. She is 2 years old and weighs 7 lbs. This little girl was adopted from animal control and was then found as a stray on the streets. The owners did not go and claim her back so she was up for adoption again. PAAC pulled her because she was terrified at the shelter. This little girl is very scared and would not be a good pet for a home with children. She is fine with other animals, and is crate trained. She will require someone with patience that can take the time to help her trust humans again. She deserves a forever home. Rest in Peace Peanut You were a goodern!

This last week was a bad time to be a Moon dog around here. My little wiener dog, Peanut, who I’ve had for 15 years, died early Saturday morning and Dale and Jan Rankin’s beloved Riley P. Dog checked out on Monday afternoon. Needless to say, we’re a mess at the Moon Monkey camp. We loved our dogs dearly.

Riley and Peanut were old friends and I’m sure they’re up in heaven now, sniffing each others butts. Wooo… it’s been a tough week. RIP my furry friends. You are missed.

Her voice is the stuff legends are made of… Kitty Wells or Wanda Jackson comes to mind. And Joe Mack on guitar and banjo is as fast and clean as a straight razor on steroids. I’ve known these artists for a couple of years now, and consider them both good friends. They were there for me when Peanut died last weekend and showed me the enormous metal they are made of. They will be back in August and best believe this will be a show you shouldn’t miss. These guys are the real deal and I love ‘em.

Delbert and Clay McClinton are recovering nicely

Here’s an update on Delbert and Clay McClinton’s medical situations: Grammy winner Delbert McClinton underwent emergency triple bypass heart surgery on Monday, April 7th, after experiencing chest pains before a gig in St. Augustine, FL. According to a source close to the family, the Texas music legend’s ticker is working beautifully now, and his doctors have attributed his impressive post surgery X-rays to the lung capacity he’s built by singing every night. He’s expected to leave the hospital by week’s end so he can return to his son, Clay, who sustained a serious head injury in a car accident on March 21st. Clay was moved from intensive care to a rehab unit where he is recovering remarkable quickly and expected to make a full recovery. Clay wrote this on his Facebook page last night, “Went out for lunch today! The Doctor said that the last surgery will be within the next two weeks...our fingers are crossed that we’ll be home in three weeks. We will never be able to thank everybody enough for all of the love, support and prayers, and words cannot possibly describe our gratitude for the wonderful people in our lives.”

It was also nice to see old friends, Lisa Morales and her guitar wizard husband, David Spencer at the Back Porch on Saturday. Lisa and her sister Roberta Morales used to run my Tuesday night Singer-songwriter Open Mic at the Lab in San Antonio (circa: 2000).

At the time, they had just moved to S.A. from Houston where they had made a pretty big name for themselves as the Sisters Morales. As the “Sisters”, these ladies toured endlessly and recorded beautiful records, even hooking up with Los Lobos heavyweight David Hildalgo to produce. The Sisters Morales had a special blend of harmonies and would shift between rock, ballads and Latin songs effortlessly.

Roberta and Lisa decided to make a go of it on their own a couple of years ago, much to the dismay of their fans, and I must admit, I missed hearing those heavenly harmonies last Saturday.

Don’t get me wrong, Lisa is a phenomenal talent, but it’s just not the same. I know I’ve whined about this break-up before but the Back Porch folks had originally booked this date as a “Sisters Morales” show and I got my hopes up.

I’ll get over it.

Also on Friday, the unlikely trio, Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) will return to Shorty’s for the first time this season. I’ll let their online bio speak for them, “Telling tales of love, loss, and island life through music, Hold Fast Fables tells tales through their organic sound, driven by soulful three-part vocal harmonies keeping the integrity of the mood and lyrics portraying love, loss, and island life. Enhanced with melodic cello delivering sophisticated accompaniment to the acoustic guitar and light percussion, this new group has created a sound all of their own.” The band includes Marc Borde (acoustic guitar), Claire Sieverman (cello) and Matthew Beard (light percussion). It’s likely that this band will sail to Port A from their last gig… it’s been known to happen. Borde is also an author, having penned the delightful “Guitar Strings and Sailing Things” about sailing around the Gulf

Coming up shortly, on May 9th Red Giant will play Giggity’s, the Rusty Brothers will play the Back Porch, the John Cortez Blues Band will play Shorty’s and the Crystals will play the Sunset Sounds concert series put on by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Rec Department in Roberts Point Park. On May 10th, Jim Dugan will be at Shorty’s, Todd Dorn will be at Giggity’s, W.C. Clark will be at the Back Porch, Brian Keane will be at the Third Coast Theater and the recently relocated Melissa Brooke Band will be at Stingrays. In the near future, watch for shows by Billy Snipes, blacktopGYPSY, Jesse Dayton, Clarissa Serna, Mandy Rowden & Billy Abel, Danica Bird, Aloha Dave and Paul Thorne. Also the annual Songwriters Showcase has announced their show this year on May 18th and the lineup includes Tim Miler & Perry Wing, Carol Elliott, Todd Dorn, Hamp Brockman & Janet Drew, James Derkits, L.Leon Sands & Sierra Dawn, Guy Le Roux, Tiffany Duckworth, Tyler McCumber, Melissa Brooke, Jef Wilson and Woodie Ray Lawson with Deb Dault.
