Stainless Nails vs Stainless Screws By Jennifer Wither Both Ringshank Nails and Torx Screws seem to be the local carpenter’s favorite in building outside structures and decks. But, the age old question is “When is it best to use screws and when is it best to use nails?” “Which has the best tensile strength and which is best at resisting corrosion?”
Ring Shank Ring Shank Nails were developed around the 1850s, when wire nails were first introduced. They are known for their holding power and used in masonry, flooring, roofing and decking. Ring shank nails are a specialty nail, because they have rings on the shank encouraging around 40% more strength than conventional nails. The rings act as wedges keeping the nail firmly in place. They are used for permanent construction such as flooring, roofing and decking. If you decide to use ring shank nails on your deck or outside project consider, Stainless Steel or Galvanized Ring Shank nails. Galvanized means that the steel has been coated with a zinc material to help prevent corrosion.
Torx Screws (Pronounced Torks) Torx Screws were developed in 1967. I t s trademark is a head characterized by a 6-point star-shaped pattern. A popular trade name for the driver is a star bit. It is used in everything from computers, automobiles to outside construction. Because of their strength and drive ability their popularity has increased in exterior construction. Though the cost is almost double, you may consider using Stainless Steel Torx screws in your outdoor projects. Stainless steel does not readily corrode near water. Galvanized Torx screws, when driven thru to fasten, have the potential to wear off thier protective coating and expose the screw to the steel underneath. On some low cost coated screws just one drive can cause the threads to lose their protective coating in treated lumber. What do the pros say about Ring shank vs Torx? Ask any carpenter and you may find, that the consensus never seems to be found. Below are a list of answers from some Contractors/ Carpenters I interviewed, asking their opinions on the differences in Galvanized, Ringshank Nails, Staineless and Torx Screws and their experiences with each. Answer: “I would recommend stainless steel nails. I only use Galvanized nails when the deck is older and we need to re-hardware. Stainless steel will outlast the deck. Stainless steel will rust but it won’t corrode. The closer your deck is to the water the more likely your hardware

will rust no matter if its stainless or galvanized. Answer: “Stainless Steel Torq screws I say, are the best, it has a star head and doesn’t strip out like a phillips head. Also, Torx has more drive force. Did you know that the holding power of common nails drops by half within two days after being driven?
One question keeps coming up, almost on a daily basis. Can my clients rent this Island property, on a short term basis, if they purchase it? That is such a loaded question. The answer is….Never advise your clients, on this subject, without knowing for certain what is the correct answer. Research and verification are the only avenues to find the answer. However, certain guidelines apply.
PIPOA First, contact the PIPOA office. There are 27 covenants on the Island that determine whether a certain piece of property is part of the PIPOA or not. If you pay your dues DIRECTLY to the PIPOA, then your property can not be rented, on a short term basis. This is not just a determination by the PIPOA, but it falls under zoning violations, by the City of Corpus Christi. You will be subject to fines and legal action, if you violate zoning codes. Plus, you are probably not complying with special fire and safety requirements that apply to daily/weekly rentals. Think about the insurance implications, if a guest is harmed on your property. Finally, there is a special tax on short term rentals that must be collected and paid to governmental agencies. It would seem to me, that the risks to the property owner would far out weigh any potential financial gain.
HOA If you live in a complex, consisting of three or more units AND you pay your dues to a HomeOwners Association, then the answer is maybe. The determining factor in this case, can be found in the Declarations and Bylaws of the HOA documents. As Schlitterbahn moves toward actuality, many HOA’s that govern Island multi-family complexes are polling their owners, to change their status and allow short term rentals. It is purely on a case by case basis that reflects the desires of a majority of the unit owners. Before purchasing, get written verification from the HOA Board members, that short term rentals are allowed in the complex, where you wish to purchase property. The Texas Real Estate Contracts specify that buyers must receive the POA/HOA documents within a certain number of days, after the contract becomes effective and special Addendums are used to specify the terms. After purchase, claiming ignorance will provide zero traction. To make matters even more confusing, some multi family complexes are within the PIPOA and some are not. If the complex is within PIPOA jurisdiction, then the HOA pays annual dues to the PIPOA and residents have use of the boat ramps and share in the privileges of other PIPOA members. Again, it is best to call the PIPOA office to verify the status of your property, in this regard.
Answer: “Screws will not pull down a deck board as tightly as a nail. Screws create bigger holes than nails and make it easier for water to seep in and corrode the wood and steel.”

I also interviewed, Robert Crawl, a registered mechanical engineer, who worked on the Glomar Explorer and other secret govt programs and space programs. His opinion on ring shank vs Torx screws is that they are basically equal in quality. “ Torx screws, h a v e superior drivng methods because of their indentetation and the bit doesn’t slip as easily. Stainless Torx screws are great for decks but are more expensive to make. Galvanized and stainless are both superior to conventional nails. But when compared to each other, galvanized is just a coating whereas stainless is all the way thru. Typical commercial stainless steel will still rust. The lower amount of carbon steel in the stainless steel means that it is less likely it will rust. Better go to a higher grade material…Low carbon content stainless steel L series that can be purchased at a higher quality outlet. Below is a picture of the same deck 2 different levels. Both levels of this deck were built at the same time. Both decks were in service, but one is closer to the water and has been submerged in water during storms. The nails used in the higher deck (picture below) are not as rusted as the nails/screws (it has both) in the deck closest to the water. Same deck, same year built, different levels, different results in rust and corrosion.
your insurance agent about your rental plans. It took more than one insurance agency, before my friends found a policy to cover their Beach Club unit, that is rented part of the year. Does the complex maintain their own rental pool and short term rental office? A few do, but many do not. You can try to advertise, rent, clean and bookkeep on your own OR you can hire a professional rental management company that deals with short term rentals. Be sure you know the fees and obligations involved BEFORE you purchase a unit that you plan to rent on a short term basis. Even homes rented on a long term basis (six months of more) must meet special state fire and safety guidelines and be insured under different policies. Being informed is a good thing……

Answer: “I only use Stainless nails to attach the joists to the deck framing but we use Stainless screws to fasten down the decking itself. Screws can be easily removed and are more accurate than a fast nail gun. Screws are better “insurance”, because they won’t pop out of the wood over time. I’ve noticed that ring shank nails lose their holding power when subjected to sudden pressure, which can cause a thread to pop with each shock.”
Additional Considerations Before purchase, make sure you know the costs involved in short term rentals. Be sure you tell
Answer: “ With this hot weather I’d definitely use Stainless nails. Galvanized doesn’t last as long. Heat will cause wood to expand and contract, causing a screw to pull out of the wood. Nails can withstand more abuse, especially on stairs, than screws, and your project will last much longer. If given enough force, screws snap and nails bend…at least the nails stay in place.”

Beach at seawall privately owned by the property owners who own the adjacent property. It was severely damaged by high tides during Hurricane Allen in 1980. The beach there often was less than fifty feet in width and breakers regularly washed against the structure which was built with private funds in the 1960s.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi monitors the channel under a contact with the City of Corpus Christi. She told the Island Strategic Action Committee prior to the last dredging project that the latest dredging would likely have been unnecessary if not for sand deposited in the main channel by Hurricane Ike. She said the Packery Jetties are unique along the Texas Coast because the jetties are not causing the beach on the north side of channel to recede as is usually the case.
Disturbance on Doubloon A 48-year-old man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he discharged a firearm in his home at a person while a 2 month old child was in the house, according to police reports. The reports said a 43-year-old man came to the house of 48-year-old Brett Noel to get a vehicle which was left overnight. The 43-year-old man discovered the vehicle was gone and the 43-year-old man demanded the vehicle to be returned. Noel then displayed a firearm and pointed in the direction of the 43-year-old man. Noel discharged the firearm and missed the 43-year-old man. No person was injured in the event.
Doubloon Corpus Christi Police Officers arrived and met the involved people outside the home. Officers entered the home to insure there were no injured persons, and then gathered the information about the event. Several people were inside the home at the time of the firearm discharge including a 26-yearold woman and her 2 month old child.
The channel system has proven to be much more robust than anticipated and annual dredging has not been necessary. However, the four dredging projects have provided more than enough sand to widen the beach sufficiently to make it a go-to spot for locals and visitors. The original dredging project in 2005-2006 was interrupted by Hurricanes Emily, Rita and Katrina – in fact high tides cut the final section of the channel open before engineers on the project were ready. When completed that
Beach on North Packery shoreline position narrows with approach to Newport Pass. This is beyond the zone of influence, beyond the region protected by the jetties. This is a dynamic region because the pass floods during periodic high water events.” She said it is too early to tell when the next dredging may be necessary. “We will need a full year to assess seasonal trends developing post-dredge. The nearshore is not as deep post-dredge with less scour around the channel mouth than in the past so we will be watching the nearshore for development of shoaling and bar formation that could influence channel shoaling and navigation.” So thirteen years after voters approved the digging of the channel and eight years after its completion, the beach and the people who use it have been the benefactors of the project, and the naysayers who predicted the channel would silt shut have been proven wrong. The channel has become a permanent part of the Island landscape along with the beach it helped build.
Seawall Beach project put 680,000 cubic yards on the beach, piped to the final destination by a slurry line. The next project was the dredging around the boat ramps on Zahn Road in 2010 and provided 16,000 cubic yards of sand. The next in the Fall and Winter of 2011-2012 brought another

Pet Adoption Day a Big Success Well over 200 animal lovers visited the Corpus Christi Animal Shelter Saturday afternoon, helping the department off to great start on the 2013 ASPCA Rachel Ray $100,000 Challenge. 50 dogs and 10 cats rode the “adoption wave” out of the shelter and into the homes of their happy new owners, thanks to the efforts of PAAC (People Assisting Animal Control) and the dedicated employees of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services. 12 more dogs and 3 cats were “fostered” for adoption, meaning that they are still too young to be spayed or neutered, but will be adopted as soon as the surgery has been completed. Saturday’s event was just the beginning of the 2013 Rachel Ray challenge, which continues through the months of June, July and August. Corpus Christi Animal Care Services is competing against 49 other Animal Shelters across the country to win the grand prize of $100,000. The shelter that has the largest increase in live release (adoptions and owner recoveries) during these months compared to the same months in 2012 will earn the grand prize. Corpus Christi Animal Care Services and PAAC are doing everything they can to win, but community support is vital to success in this challenge. Citizens are encouraged to adopt a pet (many have completely sponsored or reduced adoption fees), volunteer, sponsor

The beach there has been renourished with sand pumped from Packery Channel four times with the latest being last year. When the channel was dug it was anticipated that it would have to be dredged each year and a Tax Increment Finance Zone was established to fund it. Money for the fund comes from a tax on property built inside the zone since its inception in 2003. The TIRZ runs through 2020. That fund has paid for each of the subsequent dredging projects and a permanent fund of $4 million is set aside for that purpose.

It’s Like Time Stood Still
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon With the recent passing of Pat Summerall, you may be inclined to think about his broadcasting partner of 21 years, Hall-of-Fame coach John Madden. John is 77 years old and now retired from the booth. With all the latest conversation about concussions and violence in the game of football, I was reminded of a quotation spoken by Madden about his retirement from coaching. In his book entitled Hey, Wait a Minute (I wrote a book), Madden said, “In my decision to stop coaching, the Darryl Stingley situation was a factor, not the only factor, but a factor. I started wondering if football people really cared about a player.”
could find, and he entered the operating room. Darryl was conscious. Madden leaned over and whispered, “Everything’s going to be all right.” As we all know, everything was not all right and never would be again for Darryl Stingley. Darryl ended up a quadriplegic in a wheelchair.
Flesh and blood At this point, Madden began to question the mindset of a coach. When you are caught up in this game of football and a wide receiver goes down, you just ask management for another receiver. It’s kind of like asking the service station guy for a new battery for your car. We forget these people are made of flesh and blood. We may forget that they are a person and not just a body playing wide receiver. John Madden was upset because not enough people seem to care. Madden’s wife, Virginia, invited Stingley’s wife Tina to stay with them. Even though the regular season was in high gear, Madden and many other Raiders visited with Stingley in the hospital. Jack Tatum also visited the hospital, but was turned away by the Stingley family. Darryl held Jack responsible for his injury. Stingley died April 5, 2007. After reviewing the game film, most did not think Tatum’s hit was any more vicious than usual. The fact that Stingley was in mid-air during the hit may have kept his body from absorbing some of the blow. There is no doubt that Tatum was a hard hitter, that’s why he was drafted, “Because he hit hard,” said Madden. Violence is often confused as dirty football, but some of the worst hits occur within the rules. Tatum was not penalized for the play.

The game will change
Darryl Stingley Darryl Stingley was a wide receiver for the New England Patriots. During an exhibition game played against the Oakland Raiders on August 12, 1978, Stingley lined up on the right side of the formation at the Raiders’ 24 yard line. After sprinting eight yards straight ahead, he started toward the middle of the field to catch a pass from Patriots’ quarterback Steve Grogan, but the ball sailed too high. Stingley leaped, but was still unable to jump high enough to catch the ball. At that point, Raiders’ safety, Jack Tatum, collided with Stingley. Darryl slumped to the ground in a heap and did not move, not an arm, hand, or a leg. You could not even tell if he was breathing. It was like time stood still. By the time the stretcher had been rolled out onto the field, he still had not moved. Raiders’ coach John Madden had experienced this once before, back in 1972. One of his rookie running backs from Memphis State by the name of Ray Jamieson had suffered a broken neck while making a tackle on a punt return. Jamieson never played football again. He can walk now, but is still unable to hold a job. Jamieson lives in Tennessee, married with two boys, supported by the NFL benefits plan. As for Stingley, the game continued after he was removed from the playing field. “It wasn’t until after the game was over that I heard that Darryl Stingley was paralyzed with a broken neck,” said Madden. John Madden questioned where Stingley had been taken and went to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley to see him. By the time Madden arrived, they were fitting Stingley with a “halo” to keep his head immobile. Madden wanted to see Stingley, but was told “no.” Madden convinced a nurse to find him the biggest surgeon’s smock they
So far now, well over 4,000 former NFL players have signed a lawsuit against the NFL for failure to educate the players about concussions and making the game safer from violent collisions. I think it’s a “catch 22.” This game of football, as we know it, will change in the future, but to what extent I do not know. On January 4, 1979, John Madden retired from coaching to be with his family. He had a Super Bowl ring, 103 wins in ten years, an ulcer, and the memory of Darryl Stingley lying motionless on the playing field. Madden always felt that he should have taken Tatum to see Stingley in the hospital. Jack Tatum passed away on July 27, 2010, a shell of a man whose ego never allowed him to say he was sorry. Tatum suffered from diabetes and lost his right leg to amputation. He was 61 years old. Hall-of-Fame defensive end, Deacon Jones, once said, “You have to give up your body to play this game.” I wondered if Darryl Stingley felt that way. For him, time really did stand still.

The Moody Trojans Advance to the State Semi-Finals
By Dotson Lewis, Special to the Island Moon dlewis1@stx.rr.com Saturday, Moody had to win two games against Alamo Heights in the Region IV final. The Trojans had dropped the opener 3-2 in eight innings Friday at Whataburger Field. The Moody baseball team learned Sunday what lies ahead in the Trojans’ quest for a third state championship. Tenth-ranked Moody (32-6-1) will face Whitehouse (31-8) in a Class 4A state semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. That game follows the first 4A semifinal between No. 2 Tomball (33-4) and Wichita Falls Rider (32-8). The Trojans will be making their 12th state tournament appearance, by far the most of the field. Whitehouse and Tomball are making their first trips at state, with Rider a four-time participant. Whitehouse is located 10 miles southeast of Tyler in East Texas. The Wildcats enter the state tournament on a 12-game winning streak. Whitehouse cruised through the Region II bracket, going 10-0 with only two games decided by one run. The Region II final against Liberty saw Whitehouse romp to 6-0 and 6-1 victories. The Trojans are returning to state for the first time since 2009. Except for junior catcher/ pitcher Michael Cantu, who went to the 5A tournament with Carroll the past two years, every Moody player will be making his first state appearance. It was reported that there was a little anger circulating among Moody’s baseball team late Friday and on the bus ride Saturday on the way to the conclusion of the Region IV4A championship series. It started with junior pitcher-catcher Michael Cantu and circulated throughout the dugout. Coach Joe Curiel’s Trojans swept the Alamo Heights Mules in two games, overcoming a possible record number of runners left on base in the series, to beat the Mules 9-2 and 5-2. This will be Moody’s 12th trip to the state tournament. “I came out there with a mission. I’ve been in this place before,” said Cantu, who becomes the first area player to appear in three consecutive state tournaments with two different teams. “We knew if we beat (Alamo Heights) the first
game they’re not going to want to play us the third game. So I just told Coach, I said, ‘Coach, you worry about who’s pitching the third game because I’ve got the second one.”
Cantu (11-0) had the first one, scattering eight hits and striking out seven. Sophomore Aaron Hernandez had the second one. Hernandez drove in six runs in Game 2 and then, after not having pitched since the 6-0 win over King before the playoffs, tossed seven innings of eight-hit ball in the final game, making his overall record 3 wins and 1 loss. Despite leaving 32 runners aboard in the three-game series, the Trojans came up with enough key hits in Game 2. They were 6 for 19 with runners in scoring position accounting for nine runs batted in.
“We were angry at ourselves for letting (that happen) in Game 1,” said J.D. Garcia, who was 4 for 5 in Game 2 and added two more hits in Game 3. “It was, ‘You know what, let’s get it done and get it over with and go to state.’” “I said we had to capitalize,” Moody third baseman Ricky Gonzalez said. “We capitalized today.”
Hernandez paved the way in the finale. The Mules (24-12-1) touched him for two third-inning runs to pull within 4-2. But the sophomore settled in, throwing 117 pitches after catching Cantu for six innings in Game 2. Hernandez allowed only three hits after the third inning.
“Me and (Hernandez) were on the same page the whole day, the whole night,” Cantu said. “We just switched positions and he went out there and he threw his butt off. It’s a great feeling for him to get there and to have done it the way we did it.”
Three second-inning Alamo Heights errors and an intentional walk to Kenny Saenz — it was one of five free passes Mules pitchers issued in the game, three to Saenz, to keep Moody’s more proficient hitters from having an opportunity — led to four Moody runs. Three scored on Cantu’s deep fly to center field that the Mules’ Cole Bailey couldn’t handle and the other on Chris Estrada’s RBI bunt off Cameron Mineo (11-4), the Mules’ ace who picked up the win in relief in Game 1.
Moody (32-6-1) will play Whitehouse (31-8) in the State Semi-Finals at Dell Diamond in Round Rock at 7 pm, Thursday, June 6th. The winner of this game will play the winner of Tomball (33-4) vs. Wichita Falls Rider (32-8), Dell Diamond at 7 pm, Friday, June 7th.

Legislative Update:
Hurricane Preparedness – Put Your Plan in Place
By Todd Hunter, District 32
Living along the coastline also means preparing for hurricanes by retrofitting your house. It is important to strengthen the outside of your home so wind and objects do not tear openings in your roof or walls. Some people may want to find out about flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance is a pre-disaster flood program designed to reduce flood disasters. The National Flood Insurance program can be called at 1-888-CALL-FLOOD, Extension 445.
We are now in to the hurricane season and it is important to get your plan in place. Being prepared for hurricane season can help keep your family safe. The 2013 hurricane season officially began on June 1 and will end on November 30, 2013. It is during this time that most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic Basin pose a threat to the United States.
Nueces is included among the 14 Tier One counties along the Texas coast. This means that these counties are most likely to be affected if a hurricane makes landfall. It is important that our area, as well as all Texans, prepare for hurricanes by staying informed, creating a disaster plan and following necessary steps to keep their families safe.
In addition to getting your family, pets and homes safe and prepared, there are various state websites for hurricane preparedness and evacuation, including telephone numbers. Some important contacts include Statewide Road Conditions which can be called at 1-800452-9292 and going to Texas Online - The Official Portal of Texas at www.texasonline. com.
When hurricanes make landfall or get close to land, they can affect the lives of thousands of Texans along the coast and across the State of Texas. There are various tips on being prepared in case of a hurricane. Some of the tips include the preparation of a family disaster plan. A family disaster plan includes planning for hazards that could affect your family as well as home. Vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind should be reviewed. You should locate safe rooms or places in your house to store items if a hurricane hazard develops. It is important that families determine evacuation and escape routes from your home and places to meet in case of an emergency. Also, have an out-of-state friend as a family contact so that all family members have a place of contact. Don’t forget to plan for taking care of your pets in case of evacuation.
You can also go to my website which will provide you links, websites to various sources for hurricane preparedness, planning for an evacuation, tips on hurricane preparedness as well as state and federal government resources. Also, if you are elderly or disabled and need hurricane evacuation assistance, you can call 2-1-1. This service will assist you in hurricane evacuation. Overall, being prepared for a hurricane and living in a coastal region is very important. Please again feel free to check out the campaign website electtoddhunter.com as well as the information that we’ve provided in this article. Hopefully, this will be a quiet season and a safe one. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603).
In addition, families need to create a disaster supply kit. A disaster supply kit includes gathering blankets, pillows, seasonal clothing and special items for infants and the elderly. Please have flashlights, batteries, telephones, radios and sufficient tools in case of an emergency. It is important to have a good first aid kit with medicines and prescription drugs ready and organized.

Ermey has a message for you!
“The VLB has low-interest home loans, land loans, and home improvement loans, veterans homes and cemeteries, too!” shouts the legendary U.S. Marine drill instructor in a new, multi-media public service announcement being deployed across the state by Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board. The campaign includes billboards, radio, television and social media outreach, and aims to let Texas veterans know about the benefits they’ve earned through their service. Learn more at www.texasveterans.com. “If anything can get your attention, it’s the voice of a Marine DI,” said Patterson, a retired Marine with more than 20 years in the Corps. “Gunny is a respected and recognizable advocate for all veterans and I am very proud to have his help telling folks about the VLB. Our goal is to get more veterans the benefits they’ve earned.” Today, many know Marine Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey from the popular History Channel program “Mail Call.” But Ermey’s role as a

1987 “Full Metal Jacket” made him an instant icon. Ermey had served as a real-life Marine drill instructor and was a consultant on Kubrick’s film when he asked him to take the role.
Filmed at Fort Sam Houston with the help of the Marine 4th Recon Battalion, the ads feature Gunny touting the impressive benefits at the VLB. Patterson said Gunny was an enthusiastic volunteer. “When we told him there were Texas veterans missing out on their benefits and we wanted to change that, he jumped at the chance,” Patterson said. “Few men do as much for U.S. Armed Forces personnel and veterans as Gunny. He is a national treasure.”

Texas Takes Care of Taxes for Disabled Vets Mike Raymor Michael.Raymor@gmail.com Memorial Day weekend brought a lot of families to the coast. We went to the beach and had a postage-sized spot to sit. Needless to say, we didn’t stay very long. I should have known better, but I love to people watch and holiday weekends bring out the best characters. After getting back to the house we met with family and friends and by and by the conversation turned to veterans. I overheard someone talking about property taxes, its inevitable this time of year, and I actually heard something of interest, “they don’t pay property taxes”… I turned this thought over in my head for a couple of seconds and said, “Who doesn’t?” The answer was “Disabled Veterans”. I didn’t think that this was right so, I wrote it down and looked it up after the party. As a Vet, I am constantly uncovering new benefits and other opportunities that I didn’t know existed. There is no central depository for this information, so when I am introduced to helpful information, I like to share it and this seemed like some useful info. I “googled” ‘property tax exemptions disabled veterans’. Sure enough there it was: “Texas resident veterans who have a service-connected disability rating from the VA can receive a reduction, or total waiver of their property taxes”. Here are the exemptions based on disability ratings (displayed as %): 10%-29% – $5,000 from the property’s value 30%-49% – $7,500 from the property’s value
Deluxe Nails
June 6, 2013
50%-69% – $10,000 from the property’s value 70%-100% – $12,000 from the property’s value According to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website, “Section 11.131 of the Tax Code requires an exemption of the
total appraised value of homesteads of Texas veterans who received 100% compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs due to a 100 percent disability rating or determination of individual unemployability by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs”. There is a great FAQs section on their website as well.
But that’s not all, there is additional eligibility. According to TEXVET.org, Texas surviving spouses and minor children who are unmarried and less than 21 years old of one who dies during active service in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for an exemption of $5,000 on the appraised value of their property. Also, one who received a 10% disability rating and is 65 or older is entitled to the maximum property tax exemption.
So how does one apply? There is actually a short “Application for Disabled Veteran’s or Survivor’s Exemptions” form on the Comptroller’s website. The deadline for this exemption is between January 1st and April 30th. However, you may file for a disabled veteran’s exemption up to one year from the delinquency date.
When one gets discharged from the service they are bombarded with information and a lot of it is very general. This exemption could be lost on many Texas Vets who are returning home from multiple deployments overseas. I was certainly not told about it when I left the Navy. If you know a Vet, pass this along, it may save them a pretty penny. More information about this topic is available at: http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ proptax/exmptns.html

History continued from A1 Nearly four years ago Betty Bundy of The Port Aransas Museum went to the family to request permission to give tours. The family agreed and in no time Betty began to lead tours of the Chapel. When Betty retired, Pepper began to conduct the tours. It is readily apparent that Pepper thoroughly enjoys leading visitors on tours of The Little Chapel on the Dunes further adding, “The Port Aransas Museum is incredibly thankful to the family for allowing tours of the Chapel. It would be a shame if people could not experience it.”
Tours of the Little Chapel on the Dunes The tours are free of charge yet are worth their weight in gold. At the museum visitors watch a DVD about the Chapel and about its painter John Cobb and then drive to the Chapel, about a minute away. Twenty two steps lead to the front door of the Chapel. Once the original door is opened, the visitor’s eyes focus from the stark white colored stucco on the outside to a palate of colors that cover every square inch on the inside of the Chapel. Subtle pastels and stark, rich colors vie for the eye’s attention as do a variety of scenes from the Bible, starting with the Old Testament on the left side, moving around to the altar and then the New Testament on the right side. Behind the visitor on the wall they passed through to enter the Chapel are riveting scenes from Revelations. Eyes transition from one scene to another, sometimes seamlessly and sometimes with a double take. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs or knowledge of the Bible, the walls clamor for the visitor’s attention and focus. For those familiar with the Bible and its stories there is the treat and test of matching the frieze with the story. Pepper watches the visitors intently, looking where their eyes wander, offering tidbits of helpful general information as well as detailed information about each scene. Pepper begins the tour with a CD about the Aline Carter and The Little Chapel on the Dunes that seems to take the visitor back years ago when Aline built the Chapel. One cannot help but imagine Aline walking to the dunes to meditate and to write poetry or to lead a group of local children to the Chapel to learn about the Bible and celebrate by enjoying a bowl of ice cream and cake. It is easy for the visitor to imagine Aline enjoying the peace and solitude of the Chapel while reflecting about God or the stars or expressively penning a line or two of her latest poem. Pepper patiently allows visitors to blissfully soak in the essence and soul of The Little Chapel on the Dunes and to enjoy its colors in addition

to its tranquility. According to Pepper visitors like, “the uniqueness and the colors. When they walk in, they are completely surrounded by the paintings.” Pepper loves “the tranquility, the peace, the fact that God is all around you. The beauty.” After all of the tours that Pepper has led through the Chapel, it is very clear that she firmly believes it is a very special place. Regarding the painting touch-ups Pepper added, “John Cobb was passionate about his painting and I love to come into the Chapel after he has been here to see the changes. Sometimes they are minor and sometimes they are very obvious.” Mary Novak and Pepper give the Chapel an occasional cleaning when needed. Users of the Chapel typically do a fantastic job of cleaning

Weddings in the Little Chapel on the Dunes Occasionally in the past, public weddings were performed in the Chapel because of its special character, color, history, and appeal. Though it is capable of handling only smaller weddings, perhaps up to 24 packed guests in addition to the bride and groom, the Chapel enveloped its guests, shrouding them in warm colors, peace and love. It was a more intimate setting to have a wedding where the altar, the colorful frescoes, and the guests all shared a small space and felt that they were a part of the Chapel, its spirit and its history. Joanne Soward, of Port Aransas Beach Weddings, planned a few weddings in the Little Chapel at the Dunes and understands why the Chapel had such impressive appeal. Joanne says, “It has a presence when you walk up the steps, then when you go in and see the paintings it is exciting. It is a very spiritual place and it speaks to some people. Some couples have seen the inside and decide that they have to get married there. Some people see it online or read about it and are blown away. It is a little piece of heaven.” “Weddings in the Chapel require very little decoration”, continues Soward. She is used to providing décor that is compatible with her beach weddings. In the case of weddings in the Chapel, everything is there; the environment, decorations, essence and spirit. Soward says that the beauty, character and paintings inside all make it perfect the way it is, appealing to young and old alike.
get married in the chapel and their guests have lifetime memories after such weddings. It is also a way to publicize the chapel and use it in a way that respects the memory and work of Aline.
The Future of the Little Chapel on the Dunes The Little Chapel on the Dunes is a treasure; a small yet powerful monument to the strength, determination, fortune and desires of Aline Carter. She succeeded in building a haven that still becomes one with nature, a place where peace and beauty dwell, and a place to reconnect with God or one’s own spirituality. Nestled on a high dune, it still overlooks some of the Gulf of Mexico. It still offers tranquility and a place to “listen for the whispers of your God”, and if a visitor listens carefully, the cries of birds and sounds of surf still serenade. The Chapel remains a “sanctuary of peace and inspiration for all who seek and wonder” as the Chapel was originally intended, according to Aline’s daughter-in-law Aubrey Keating Carter.
is happy to share it with the world. A visit to The Chapel is both peaceful and energizing. Weddings in the Chapel are intimate, beautiful and memorable.
The Little Chapel on the Dunes is truly both a gift to Port Aransas and a reflection of it. It is a reward to every visitor. A great thanks must be extended to the Carter family for allowing the public to enjoy the Chapel and for maintaining it. It is too special to be locked up and hidden from view. Special thanks to John Cobb who gave the incredible Chapel iconic uniqueness with his frescoes of Bible scenes. Cobb continued to donate his energy and love to the Chapel by touching up damaged or faded frescoes. The Port Aransas Museum staff should receive hearty thanks for having the vision and desire to bring the Chapel to the public. Finally, a thank you to Aline Carter whose vision over 75 years ago has stood the test of time and still offers the peace and love that she bestowed upon it.
Its existence is a testament to what one person can achieve, and although Aline had help with design, funding, and building the Chapel, it was unquestionably her vision. Its continued existence has been carefully guided, maintained and enhanced by The Carter Family, John Cobb, Steven Barron and Randy Krumm, and more recently The Port Aransas Museum. Many others have also assisted in remodeling and restoring it. The chapel continues to require periodic maintenance and occasional restoration as years of hot and humid weather takes its toll both on the outside and inside. Cracks are again surfacing on the inside walls and frescoes are splitting and peeling from the walls. The heat has buckled and cracked one of the stained glasses and frames. Hopefully, these problems can be taken care of in the future so that the Chapel will retain its charm, color and spirit. For now, it is one of the historical hallmarks of Port Aransas. It is one of those buildings that everybody must see and experience. It is one of those things in life that is somewhat difficult to describe but profoundly powerful to experience. Port Aransas is proud of its little Chapel and
Fresco of the Virgin Mary.
Soward, with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, grew up in Fayette County, Texas where there are other painted churches, which gave her and nurtured a strong appreciation and love for churches with murals and frescoes. “The paintings offer a whole other layer of meaning that you can feel.” says Soward about the Little Chapel on the Dunes. “You sit there and close your eyes and feel the breeze and then feel God’s presence. When you open your eyes you are able to view the stories of the Bible. That becomes the prayer. You can meditate about different stories from the Bible. The Chapel becomes the meditation.” Aline was a very impressive and amazing person in Soward’s eyes because Aline, “…was a woman who could have sat back and enjoyed her life easily, but instead she chose to give so much to so many others. She must have been a very gracious woman.” Contact Joanne Soward at 361-772-5571 or view her website at www. facebook.com/PortAWeddings. Hurricanes continued from A1 Atlantic basin hurricanes have formed in June or earlier. That’s an average of one every 6.25 years; but Tropical Storms in June are not as rare. The last June hurricane was Allison in 1995. It reached Category 1 strength in the Gulf of Mexico and hit Northwest Florida as a tropical storm. There were two June hurricanes in the 1980s – Bonnie, which struck Texas as a Category 1 system in 1986, and Alberto in 1982. There was only one June hurricane in the 1970s, Agnes, which hit the Florida Panhandle in 1972. In the 1960s there were three June hurricanes, Hurricane Alma reached major hurricane status in 1966; then in 1968, two hurricanes formed in June, Abby and Brenda, the only time that has happened in the past 50 years. According to Dr Neil Frank, who tracked hurricanes for KHOU Television in Houston until his retirement in 2008, there have only been four hurricanes since 1950 strike the Texas coast. They were Audrey, Alice, Bonnie, and Alex the most recent. Hurricane Audrey was the most noteworthy since it was a category 4 with winds of 145 mph making landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border. Hurricane Audrey remains the earliest June hurricane to reach category four status. Over the last 150 years, one June hurricane has formed every 10 years with one tropical storm forming every five years Here’s a look at June Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico over history. **************

King Pelican…
Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen played Selena Auditorium last Thursday night. I was fortunate enough to see the Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen show at Selena Auditorium last Thursday. This performance was only the two artists on stage with two guitars and no bands. The show was very well attended and the Aggie contingency was successfully represented. One thing that I was grateful for was that Keen didn’t play his predictable set of sing-along anthems, choosing instead more obscure songs from his catalog. He did sneak in the obligatory Porch Song, Christmas Song, Bucking Song and of course the Corpus Christi Bay Song to which the audience enthusiastically chimed in. Lovett did do his famous If I Had a Pony on My Boat song but generally speaking and as the majority of Facebook posts would suggest, the crowd was mostly there to see Robert Earl. Corpus Christi definitely loves Robert Earl Keen and his annual Christmas shows at Brewster Street are testimony This show at Selena initially appeared to be more subdued, given the environment, but as the artists loosened up, so did the crowd, and it was open season on shouting out requests for songs as well as anything else that seemed to be on their minds. I must say, the guy behind me had an impressive vocal projection that was probably heard in the next county. The on stage banter between the two old friends was hilarious. Both of these guys are quick witted and have a great sense of humor. Keen told a really funny story about his brother passing out drunk and naked on a park bench at 3 a.m. on Ocean Drive when they used to live in Corpus… the punch line to the cops being, “what are yall doing in Houston?” Lovett also talked about his connection to Corpus when his working class family would take road trips here from Houston when he was a child because that was as far as they could afford to go. They played for two and half straight hours and gave us a great encore. I thought the show was wonderful. It was right up there with the John Prine show at Selena last September. I really love this venue. It’s not so big that you feel out of touch with the performers. The acoustics are very good in there too.
The great Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep will play Giggity’s this Saturday night.
King Pelican played Giggity’s last Friday night. Also on Friday, the mega-cool surf band, King Pelican (San Antonio, TX) played Giggity’s. I was a little worried at first whether an all instrumental band could hold a crowd all night, but found out that if you play a steady diet of Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Safaris and NO wimpy Beach Boys, the girls will start wiggling. And wiggle they did. The dance floor stayed full all night. King Pelican is a classic guitar band with Ernest Hernandez III and Dennis Fallon (Two Tons of Steel) both on guitar. Man, their whammy bar sure got a workout that night. We heard such surf classics as Misirlou, Wipe Out and even Secret Agent Man. It was rad!
DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend… Tonight, Thursday, June 6th, Charlie Hagar & the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rouge, LA) will bring their Southern roots rocking folk and country mix to the Back Porch. I’ve seen these guys a handful of times now, and am more impressed each time… high energy, good songwriting, no gimmicks. On Friday, June 7th, the man who brought Snoop Dog to the Anglo-Saxon table, Shinyribs (Austin, TX) aka Kevin Russell will play the Back Porch. You may know Russell as the frontman for the great alternative country band, The Gourds… the guys who showed that even white boys could go for Gin and Juice. I saw Shinyribs at the House of Rock a couple of years ago, and believe me, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS SHOW!!! Also on Friday, my favorite priest, Father James
Ray T & the City Crew… On Friday night, I stuck my head into the Flats Lounge long enough to hear most of Ray T and the City Crew’s (Aransas Pass, TX) first set. They were on fire. Ray had that Strat of his popping wheelies. There’s nothing finer than watching this band shred some ZZ Top or Stevie. They are the classic roadhouse band that has only one speed… kill. The Flats F Ibe NE R T vampire bar and will always my A favorite every Ray T show is epic… they never cease (361) 749-2388 to amaze me. I always envision a scene straight out of From Dusk til Dawn. I keep waiting for www.feldergallery.com

Shinyribs aka Kevin Russell will play the Back Porch on June 7th. Derkits, will bring his little string band, The Naughty Pines, to the Gaff. That will be an early show (5-7) and is extremely family friendly. James filled me with his band, “The Naughty Pines met in the nineties on the banks of the San Marcos River and have been playing music together in various arrangements ever since. In Houston in 2001 James Derkits, Kevin Schubert, and Billy Tweedie all found themselves living in Houston, and they began to focus on their music a bit more, teasing out the bluegrass, jam band, and folk influences in a simplified expression of folk rock harnessed in their guitar, percussion, vocals, and banjo with the occasional mandolin accent. Their songs playfully lift out bits of truth through reflection on mundane and natural everyday encounters.”

The Tejas Brothers will play the Back Porch on June 8th.
And if you find yourself in Corpus Friday night, the show to see is Charlie Sexton with the Nick Tremulis Orchestra at Doctor Rockits. Sexton, formerly known as Little Charlie, is an Austin icon who used to play sideman guitar with Bob Dylan and Joe Ely. He was brought up in the bars of Austin and was tutored by such luminary as Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan and W.C. Clark. He had one big hit in 1985, Beats So Lonely. This should be an interesting show. Honestly, the guy really is talented. On Saturday, June 8th, the hits keep right on coming. A show I wouldn’t miss for love or money, Ernie Garibay and Cats Don’t Sleep (San Antonio, TX) will be at Giggity’s. Ernie is the brother of the late Randy Garibay (Barbacoa Blues) and is a legend in S.A. This show will be a real deal west side San Antonio rhythm and blues classic. Also on Saturday, the always jumping Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Back Porch. This band, led on accordion and vocals, by the spirited David Perez is like a cross between the Texas Tornados and Speedy Gonzales. They flow from Country to polkas to ballads at a super danceable pace. And finally on Saturday, a man I consider to be a songwriting genius, Alejandro Escovedo and the Sensitive Boys, will play the Executive Surf Club. Escovedo will be honored with a star on the South Texas Walk of Fame earlier in the day. Also to be inducted that day are George Strait, Jeremy Jordan, Oscar Martinez, Bill Barr & the Sons of Texas and Esteban (Steve) Jordan.
And that’s the truth!
