Cement in Soil

The Travelling Moon Gets Around By Jennifer Wither

Let’s talk soil; or in the case of the island…lets talk weeds . Just like our bodies have a pH balance so does soil. Soils that are more alkaline have more calcium present and offer a more neutral pH content. Soils that are more acidic (such as sand) have less calcium content and tend to be more towards the acidic pH range. So what’s the big deal about Calcium? The presence of Calcium in soil will severely retard, if not kill, most annual and perennial weeds.

Jack and Kathy Rueter at Suomenlinna Island in Helsinki, Finland

Jennifer introducing the cement idea to customers

So, if you are considering a zeroscape and don’t want to spend as much time pulling those inevitable weeds consider an additive with calcium in it…such as cement. Cement serves as a double duty additive in your sandy soil. Calcium which is one of the main ingredients in cement is obtained from the limestone is ecofriendly, and won’t cause soil sterility. And if that isn’t enticing enough, the calcium in cement also helps control dust and stabilizes the soil. The second duty of adding cement is that by tilling it into the ground 4 to 5 inches, compacting and moistening it, you are creating a strong sub-base for your zeroscape, pathways or pavers. Promoting a resistance to ground movement and keeping your project afloat and looking fab for years. I only use this process for sandy type soils.

He said that type of traffic pattern does not produce sufficient traffic to require a traffic study to meet city and state guidelines (SPID is a state maintained roadway). However, he said, even though the study is not required developers of the park are in the process of conducting one as part of their design and planning process. Current plans call for a parking garage to be built on site, in addition to parking lots.

the design and operational planning for the park,” he said. “We are aware this needs to be addressed and we are addressing it.” City Council member Colleen McIntyre, who was a member of the ISAC prior to running for City Council, said a plan developed by the City of Austin to address commuter parking in that city may serve as a model for a local ordinance. Under that plan residents who live in the area around the park would register their vehicles with the city so that they could park on the streets around the park. Non-residents who are visiting the park would be required to park in designated areas provided by the park. Traffic counts along SPID, now several years old, found an average of 26,000 cars per day travel the stretch of road from the JFK Bridge to the SH/361/Commodores/SPID intersection where about 60% turn north toward Port Aransas. Schexnailder has previously told the ISAC the new park is expected to add about 800 cars per day to that amount.

Police Blotter

“Day of Days”

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon It took him years to be the “first.” Twenty years to be exact. He will be the first to wear the star of Houston, Texas Astros on his cap, which will proudly be displayed on his Hall of Fame plaque. Day after day, he did his thing. He hit leadoff homers, doubles up the middle, or took a pitch on the elbow and trotted to first base. Along the way, he began to lead the team out onto the field at the start of each game. We quickly found out that he was a natural born leader. Very rarely was he hurt, or at least he was good at keeping it from us. Little did we know that he played through illnesses, soreness, injuries to his knee in 2000, shoulder and broken fingers? He never made excuses, busted his tail during every at-bat, and man, could he turn on a fastball. He was always there; in the middle of a rally, stretching a single into a double, bunting to get on base, and diving to keep a ball in play. For twenty years he showed up for the same team and we never noticed he was there until something good happened.

Man sentenced to 13 years for beach driving death

“I’m in a good place.” Craig Alan Biggio, who was born in Smithtown, New York, on December 14, 1965, announced his retirement from Major League Baseball, this month, July 24, 2007. Unlike most professional athletes, he went out on his own terms. After twenty years of taking infield practice, twenty years of getting in and out of that batting cage, he’s had enough. “I’m at peace with it and I’m at peace with how things have gone for me. I’m in a good place,” said Biggio. “It couldn’t get any better than it did on June 28, when I reached my 3,000th hit. It can’t get any better than that, other than winning the World Series. That was the greatest day of my life and my family’s life. That’s what I want the fans to remember.” Yes, he will be remembered.

He will be

He was a husband, a father, a religious man, rancher, head of the Sunshine Kids, (an organization that takes care of cancer stricken kids) and yes, he played baseball. He could have been your next door neighbor and you would have never known he was a professional athlete. Now people name their kids after him. He was okay with who he was and proud to be a professional baseball player. I remember being late arriving to a game once and while standing outside, in line to get in, I smiled at hearing this loud roar rumble from deep inside the park, B-G-O, B-G-O. Over and over, the crowd chanted B-G-O, as he approached home plate. It was just another “Day of Days,” in the life of Craig Biggio. Baseball, in Houston, Texas, as we know it, was about to begin.

A 19-year-old man was sentenced this week to 13 years in prison for killing a man when he ran over him on the beach last January. Dahlton Osborn, 19, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault with a vehicle charges in the January 12 death of 41-year-old Adam Reed on Padre Island. Police were called about 12:40 a.m. Dahlton to State Highway 361 and Zahn Osborn Road Officers were told by witnesses that a woman and a man had been struck by a red Dodge Ram pickup. Witnesses told police Osborn had been driving recklessly on the beach and into the dunes when the truck struck two people. A 25-yearold woman had serious leg injuries and the man was pronounced DOA at an area hospital. Reed died of multiple blunt force injuries. Osborn fled in the truck and was stopped by Port Aransas police, who said he appeared to be intoxicated.

A Grinder He was a grinder, a winner, and an old fashion ballplayer. He always respected the game and his ability to focus on the next play separated him from most. Whether something good or bad happened on the field, he was able to define it as “that’s baseball.” He never charged the mound, never showed up other players or the club, and has never been thrown out of a game. Oh, there was a fire, a fire burning deep down inside him, but he always had it under control. His motto may have been, “Never let them see you sweat,” like the commercial. He never grew his hair long, pierced his ears or tattooed his body. You never read bad things about him in the press. The only thing dirty about Craig Biggio was his uniform.

Reckless driving on the beach Beach Marker 215 July 28, 2013, 7:53 p.m. Reckless Driving

Craig Biggio remembered as a first round draft choice from Seton Hall University, a seven time All-Star at two different positions, winner of four Gold Gloves, five Silver Slugger Awards, 3,000 plus hits, six postseason appearances, and the most doubles (661) hit by any right-handed batter to every play the game. There is one other record that he accomplished that no one seems to talk about. In 1997, Biggio became the first and only player in baseball history not to hit into a double play, while playing an entire 162-game season. He will also be remembered as a Killer Bee forever in the minds of Houston fans. For eighteen of his twenty years you could not say Biggio without saying Bagwell, Jeff Bagwell that is. These two had been the heartbeat of the Houston Astros for as long as most fans could remember. So, goodbye Craig Biggio! Looks like you will be heading back to your small town beginnings in the State of New York to pick up your last award, in a little place called Cooperstown. Then, you will be remembered forever as one of the best. It will be just another “Day of days,” in the life of Craig Biggio.

Officers patrolling the beach pulled over the driver of an orange Jeep Wrangler for driving recklessly on the shoreline where several Brian Keith families were located. The driver misidentified himself Atchison to the Officer and provided an out-of-state identification belonging to someone else. He was unable to provide his correct name, date of birth, or address on the driver’s license. Brian Keith Atchison, 22, was arrested and charged with Reckless Driving and Displaying or Possessing a False Driver’s License. The owner of the Jeep showed up and asked that the vehicle be released to him. He was also arrested for an outstanding warrant. He was charged

with an outstanding Nueces County warrant for Motion to Revoke Probation. The vehicle was released to a friend of the owner; one who had a valid license and not wanted by police.

Beat the Heat B4 It Beats You Danniece Bobeché, MSN, WHNP Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner www.danniece.com The heat is rising on our little slice of paradise. Local heat index is projected to exceed 110 over the next several days. PHEW, now that’s hot. So many of our island activities are centered around water but many aren’t drinking enough plain ‘ole H20 to stay hydrated. Sorry, ice cold beer does not count.

“I’m so tired” About this time every year, there is an upsurge of patients complaining of extreme fatigue. Most are convinced that something must be seriously out of whack; a struggling thyroid, sudden anemia, or hormones gone awry. When asked about activities and fluid intake the majority will be the unintentional victims of dehydration. According to one study, lack of water intake is the #1 trigger of chronic fatigue. Recognizing the symptoms of dehydration with “early and often” water intake can prevent heat related illness, even death.

“but I’m not thirsty” Dehydration can begin even before we are thirsty. The human body is 50-70% water depending upon age and gender plus every cell in our body depends on water for proper functioning and survival. In addition to fatigue, other symptoms of dehydration may include nausea, headache, muscle cramps, dark urine, constipation, dry skin, even difficulty using the old noggin. Water also plays a major role in boosting metabolism hence adequate water consumption may improve weight loss efforts.

More than an a few ounces of prevention The old eight, 8- ounce glasses of water per day is disputed by many and recommendations vary. In fact, according to the Institute of Medicine, adequate daily intake for adults should be 3 liters (13 cups) for men and women should consume at least 2.2 liters (9 cups) every day. Young children, our elders and those with compromised immune systems may need other guidelines so discuss this with your healthcare providers. All beverages contain water but beware; caffeine and alcohol both have diuretic effects and can contribute to dehydration. When out in the heat, try to drink equal parts water between your iced tea or tropical adult beverages. Food sources such as watermelon and tomatoes are very high in water content so check out our island vendors for fresh produce to add to your daily intake. If you are going to be active outdoors during this heat wave, drink extra water before, during, and after activities. Water Pearls Thankfully our trash day water restriction does not apply to human consumption, so drink up! Make it interesting; add slices of citrus fruit to your water in a special glass. An old sailor trick is freezing water overnight in large BPA-free water bottles providing a full day of ice cold water for outdoor adventures. Whatever you do, enjoy our island breeze, summertime fun, & stay hydrated……….CHEERS.

from pursuit and head to the middle of the channel as the hunters became the hunted. Trying to return fire and reload the muzzle loading muskets from the rocking and crowded boats amidst their wounded and dying comrades the Union sailors shortly decided to make for the opposite shoreline ;quickly leaving their cutters as they struck the bottom of the Mustang shore, taking only their muskets, leaving all other equipment in the bottom of the cutters along with two seamen, Nicholson and Cowen, dead from wounds in the head and chest.

Yankees take cover at Boathouse location Out of musket range on the Mustang side the battered sailors watched the sand hills on the opposite shore for activity. (While this was Mustang Island in 1862 it is now in the vicinity of the old Lighthouse Bar and now the Boathouse Grill on Leeward Drive.) One of the sharp shooting Confederate farm boys decided to take a long shot, aiming eight feet over one of the Yankee lads and several feet to the right for windage he then pulled the trigger. Ensign Reynolds dropped to the ground, hit for the second time by a combination of marksmanship and luck. Quickly the Federal sailors scurried behind some small dunes to the north. With their commander seriously hurt, three dead and two others bleeding from wounds, their boats in range of Rebel fire things got worse. The

wind picked up and the cutters unsecured from the quick fight started drifting toward the Confederate position. With this helpless position the decision was made to start a long march back to the Sachem on the other side of Port Aransas with nothing but their muskets and carrying their injured comrades. Twelve hours later, at midnight the Federals finally arrived at the Sachem, exhausted and defeated from a day that began with the hope of triumph and prize money. The surgeon was called from the ship Arthur to tend to the wounded. Ensign Reynolds who had risen through the ranks from seaman to officer and acted bravely in this and previous fights was one more victim of that tragic conflict.

Rebels take Yankee ships Meanwhile the Confederates secured the two Yankee cutters and the body of the civilian guide, Peter Baxter who died on the Mustang shore. With the boats in tow they made their way back to Corpus Christi, landing at nine that evening, a victory to report to the inhabitants of the blockaded and chocked off town. The Confederate commander Captain John Ireland ended the war as Lt. Colonel. He was later elected to the Texas House where he was responsible for the legislation creating the University of Texas and in 1882 elected Governor.

Three Chords and the Truth

Island Moon

August 1, 2013

Joe Mack/ Richard Lockhart…

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Hot, hotter & hottest… Welcome to the dog days boys and girls. Hot, hotter and hottest… the islands have been packed lately and the traffic has been relentless. It hasn’t helped matters that there are four ferries down for maintenance. I actually saw the ferry line make a complete bumper to bumper loop around the city last Saturday. It was one gnarly gridlock. The good news is that we didn’t have to go far for great music.

Melissa Brooke will play Giggity’s on Saturday.

Littlewolf… Joe Mack & Sky Smeed were in town this weekend and played Shorty’s and the Tarpon Ice House.

Littlewolf played the Back Porch and Giggity’s last week. On Thursday, a smoking little blues band from Lubbock, Littlewolf, showed up for a couple of gigs. They played the Back Porch then moved the show over to Giggity’s on Friday. This band combines the veteran talent of guitarist/ vocalist/songwriter Steve Lott with the young and beautiful Kristi Clanton on lead vocals and lap steel guitar. I’ve known Steve for many years and used to watch him play in such great Austin bands as The Lotions and D.K. Little’s Powerplay. He moved to Australia for about eight years in the early 90’s and really honed his craft. I hadn’t seen him for a long time, and watching Stevie play these two gigs in Port A was inspiring. He’s definitely at the top of his game… clean, fast and tasty. His new band mate, the adorable Miss Clanton, gave us quite a show. She’s one of those skinny white girls with the soul of Big Mama Thornton. This 22 year old delicate little flower is no delicate little flower. She can howl and wail with the voracity of a freight train. I wouldn’t take her on with a bazooka. She’s no slouch on the lap steel either. These show were not only great musically, they were interesting to watch, too. There was a lot going on up there. We’ll get them back here before long. I think Port A is a good fit.

On Saturday, my favorite Oklahoma pal, Joe Mack, blazed in from Tahlequah to play Shorty’s. Joe is also the editor-in-chief of the coolest alternative music magazine in OK, Currentland and is one brainy character. He reminds me of Dale Rankin in many ways. Joe stuck around town for an extra day and invited his musician friend, Sky Smeed from Kansas to join him at the weekly Tarpon Ice House jam on Sunday hosted by Uel Jackson. That impromptu session turned out to be one of the best shows I saw all weekend. Also on Saturday, Rich Lockhart (Victoria, TX) wowed the crowd at Giggity’s with some guitar acrobatics. He’s really starting to turn into a solid act over there.

DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend It should be another hot weekend of music… on Thursday, August 1st. the occasional lawyer band, the Deadbeats will play the Back Porch, the Free Beer Band will be at the Tarpon Ice House and the local country faves, Three Way Street will be at Giggity’s. On Friday, August 2nd, the friendliest man in country music, Thomas Michael Riley will bring some hollerin’ and swallerin’ to the Back Porch; there will be a full blown 80’s dance party at Giggity’s with Full Body Puppets (Rockport, TX); the acoustic Brett Mussey Band will be at Shorty’s and local songbird extraordinaire Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX) will play her first Friday gig from 6:30- 8:30 at the Tarpon Ice House. Also, Elliott will play the new Handsome Sailor Beach Club on Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass on Saturday night. The HSBC is a

Clay McClinton… Also on Friday, Clay McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) played at the Back Porch. Clay is the talented son of the Texas roadhouse legend, Delbert McClinton and the heir apparent. He’s definitely inherited the roadhouse lineage. There must something in the water up there, those Ft. Worth musicians have a boogie vibe going like nowhere else. Players like Delbert, Glenn Clark, Johnny Reno, Robert Ealey, Steven and Sumpter Bruton, T-Bone Burnett, Dave Bottlehead Miller, Billy Wade Sanders… even the late great Townes Van Zandt and on and on, claim Cow Town as home. Clay gave F I N E A RT us a text book example of a great roadhouse performance. I especially appreciated his (361) 749-2388 harmonica ability. He even looks a little like www.feldergallery.com Delbert. You can’t help but love this guy.

got on stage with the T-Birds and sang Stormy Monday in falsetto. It didn’t work at all. Back then, the T-Birds used to do a bunch of Lazy Lester tunes (I’m a Lover Not a Fighter, Sugar Coated Love, etc) and had a totally infectious beat that the whole world would soon grow to love. I remember those early days well when the “crowd” was basically the band’s girlfriends and the bartenders. They caught on though and Port Aransas Summerfest… caught on big. They But the big news on Saturday eventually played stadiums is at Sharkey’s Beach Club in and arenas around the Port A. Drum roll please…. world and opened for The Fabulous Thunderbirds such stars as the Rolling will kick start the August Stones and Eric Clapton. concert series called Port They got signed by a major Aransas Summerfest. The record label and were on great Toman Brothers (San Carol Elliott plays the Tarpon regular rotation on MTV. Antonio, TX) will open the Ice House this Friday and the The T-Birds really did put show. Also slated in the month Handsome Sailor Beach Club on out some cool records with are Joe Ely on August 10, songs like Tuff Enough, Saturday. Rick Treveno on August 17, Powerful Stuff, Wrap It Cory Morrow on August 24, Up, How Do You Spell Jack Ingram on August 31 and Los Lonely Love and Why Get Up. There were a number Boys on September 1. All of these shows are of personnel changes… Franny Christina “all ages” and will start at 6:30 p.m. The cost of replaced Buck on drums for a long time, admission is $20 for advanced tickets and $25 Preston Hubbard replaced Keith on bass at the door. These are all outdoor concerts to and a number of noteworthy guitarists took be held on the property right behind Sharkeys. their turn trying to replace Jimmy Vaughan Bring your lawn chairs but not your ice (Duke Robilard, Kid Ramos, Nick Curran). coolers… beverages will be on sale there. Keyboardist Gene Taylor played with the band for a long time, too. The present day line-up The Fabulous Thunderbirds… has a couple of Austin’s finest, in my opinion. The T-Birds are a Texas blues band that got Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller now fill the their start in Austin in the mid 70’s as the house guitar shoes and Johnny’s brother Jay Moeller band at a little club call Antone’s. The original now plays drums. The Moeller brothers and members of the band consisted of Kim Wilson Keller are long time Antone’s alumni and I feel on vocals and harp, Jimmy Vaughan on guitar, are as close to the original line-up as anyone Keith Furgeson on bass and Mike Buck on Wilson could have chosen. I can personally skins. They used to play every Sunday night attest, they are sensational musicians and hold and I remember it well. A very distinct memory their own with any line-up this band has seen I have is one especially cold winter night through the years. And of course, Kim Wilson when nobody was in the place and Rolling is the glue that makes this machine work and Thunder Revue was in town and was staying always has been. He is simply the best. This at the Driscoll Hotel across the street from the show will be a homecoming of sorts for me and club. In walked Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. it is certainly at the top of my DO NOT MISS Dylan sat in the corner and chain smoked cigs LIST. See you there! and generally acted really weird while Mitchell very cool outdoor palapa bar and marina across from the sailor’s memorial. This wonderful place is the creation of the Handsome Sailor himself, Capt. Tom Doran, and has a similar feel to the Back Porch. On Saturday, August 3rd, Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play the Porch, Texas Sand will be at Shorty’s and our local C&W phenom, Melissa Brooke will return to Giggity’s.

And that’s the truth!
