By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon The Astros had struggled in Spring Training, recording a 3-16 win-loss record, and then proceeded to lose their first nine games of the 1983 season. Part of the reason for such a slow start is that ace; Nolan Ryan had missed the first three weeks of the season with prostates issues. Ryan’s first start of the season did not occur until the twelfth game. He recorded seven strikeouts in six innings, beating the Expos, 6-3. The team then caught fire, winning six of their next nine games. The stage was now set for Ryan, who remained only eight strikeouts short of the record. Over 32,000 fans showed up at the Astrodome for his April 22nd start against the Philadelphia Phillies. A teammate said Ryan was so nervous before the game; he put his jersey on backwards. He struck out just three batters and took a 6-3 loss. “I tried too hard,” said Ryan. The team then traveled to Montreal where Bob Knepper shut out the Expos, 2-0.

bench. Then I looked up and saw all their players jumping up off the bench when they thought it was going to be called strike three,” said Mills. “It was then that I knew I was the one. Now I’m thinking, he’s “The Ryan Express” and he’s known for his fastball. He just threw me a curveball and missed with it. He’ll probably throw a fastball now.”
It was outside But Ryan did as he had done thousands of times before. He raised his hands over his head, tucked his left knee under his chin, and threw with his simple and fluid motion, leading with his left foot, shifting his weight and releasing the ball with his right arm extended. Ryan
“Tim Blackwell pinch hit before me and made an out. Then it was my turn to pinch hit for Doug Flynn,” said Mills. Skipper, Bill Virdon, had chosen Mills because he had faced Ryan once before in Houston, earlier in the year, and had gotten a hit. “I wasn’t sure where the strikeout number was, because they did not have a countdown on the scoreboard at that time,” said Mills. The count on Mills went to 0-2 and Ryan threw him a curveball. Mills took it for ball one. “I was hitting left-handed and facing the Houston

10,000 Volunteers to Descend on Texas Beaches Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup set for 29 locations on Sept. 28
Every year, beachgoers leave tons of trash on Texas beaches. And even more washes up from the Gulf of Mexico.
That’s why Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson is issuing the call for an army of volunteers of all ages to help keep our beaches naturally pristine and safe for all to enjoy at the Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup. “We’re looking for a few good Texans to help keep our beaches litter-free,” Patterson said. “Join us on Sept. 28, for an enjoyable, memorable event to clean up our coast.” Volunteers may register at check-in sites between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013. (St. Jo Island and I-45 Estuarial Corridor volunteers must register in advance.) Most of the 29 sites will provide cold drinks, hot food and fun activities immediately following the cleanup.
Passing the Big Train The Astros awoke Wednesday April 27, 1983, out of last place for the first time all season. Nolan Ryan struck out former Astro manager, Brad Mills, who at that time played for the Expos. That strikeout was Ryan’s 3,508th, breaking a 56-year old record held by Walter “Big Train” Johnson. This record had been considered untouchable, just as had Babe Ruth’s 714 home runs. Brad Mills, a utility infielder with only 154 Major League at-bats, said before the game, that there was a buzz in the clubhouse. “We knew he was close to the record and the players were all throwing money into a pool to see who would be the victim of the record-breaking strikeout. There was a lot of money in that pool,” said Mills.
Now in its 27th year, 446,000 Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have picked up 17 million pounds of litter from the Gulf Coast. To participate, register at www.TexasAdoptABeach.org. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, a hat and sunscreen. They will be provided with data cards, gloves, pencils and trash bags. Those who can’t make it on Sept. 28 will have a
Nolan Ryan threw another curveball and Mills took it, as animated umpire, Bob Engel, called it strike three. The record was now Ryan’s. A total of 19,309 fans at Olympic Stadium rose in unison to applaud Ryan’s accomplishment. After that season, Mills was traded to the Houston Astros. The following year, Mills was coming out of the clubhouse one day during Spring Training and Ryan was sitting on the bench in the dugout, waiting for somebody. They looked at one another and Ryan asked, “It was outside, wasn’t it?” Mills nodded “Yes.” After Nolan Ryan retired from the Texas Rangers, he flew Brad Mills and his family to Dallas for his retirement party. “That was a classy move,” said Mills. Interestingly, Ryan was born in 1947, the same year that Walter Johnson had died. As we all know, Ryan didn’t stop there, as he continued to extend the strikeout record to an astounding 5,714. That strikeout record, my friends, is more than likely safe. A Special K indeed. Andy Purvis is a local author. second opportunity later this fall. A competitive, four-wheel drive excursion, cleanup and treasure hunt – the Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup Expedition – is set for Nov. 2 at Padre Island National Seashore. And year-round, anyone may donate to Adopt-A-Beach online at www. TexasAdoptABeach.org. Sponsorship levels range from $25 to $25,000, tax-deductible. The cleanup does more than simply remove litter from the beach. Data collected from previous Adopt-A-Beach cleanups played an important role in the passage of an international treaty (MARPOL Annex V) restricting the dumping of plastics in the world’s oceans. In 1991, the International Maritime Organization prohibited the dumping of trash, except for finely grounded food scraps, into the Gulf of Mexico. It is Starting to Look Like a Farly Boat! Editor’s note: This is the third part in a series by Joe Calvey who, along with his son, is building a wooden boat at the Farley Boat Works in Port Aransas. By Joe Calvey, Sr.

Who’s mixing the epoxy? Darrel had us take one of the 15’8” x 4’ lengths of plywood we had scarffed the week before to the table saw where he cut it in half lengthwise. We laid the two pieces on the floor. “Who’s mixing the epoxy?” Darrell asked. I grabbed a plastic container and started mixing.
Here is some very sound advice about epoxy. As we told her our tales of wrestling with wood our confidence grew with each tidbit until I am certain we sounded like we had sawdust in our veins. Mom assured us she wanted us to get back to work on the boat so she could go fishing with us as soon as possible. So with a full measure of hubris on my part, my son remaining quite humble, we journeyed back to Port Aransas leaving San Antonio at 6 a.m. on Monday morning only to find out the Farley Boat Works is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Honoring Grandparents Who Raise Their Grandkids By Jason Alderman In 1978, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. Presidents since Jimmy Carter have issued proclamations urging citizens to, in the words of President Barack Obama, “honor those who have helped shape the character of our nation, and thank these role models for their immeasurable acts of love, care and understanding.” At a stage in life when many people are already comfortably retired, some 2.7 million grandparents have taken on the responsibility of providing basic needs for their grandchildren, according to data compiled by Generations United. An alarming 21 percent of these vital caregivers live below the poverty line, even though 60 percent are still in the workforce. All told, an estimated 7.8 million children under 18 live in households headed by grandparents or other relatives, including those whose parents are absent due to death, substance abuse, military deployment or other reasons. Ironically, even though many of these “grandfamilies” barely scrape by, they save taxpayers more than $6.5 billion each year by keeping children out of the foster care system. So it only seems fair that many federal, state and local aid programs are available to help these guardian angels provide financial and emotional safety nets for their grandchildren. Among the many difficulties these families sometimes face: • If you become your grandchild’s foster parent, you’re responsible for day-to-day decisions and care, although the state retains legal custody and pays for the child’s care. • Unless you establish some form of legal relationship (custody, guardianship or adoption), the parent may be able to take your grandchild from your home at any time. • In some states, it’s difficult to enroll the child in school or get medical care without some form of legal relationship. • Most senior-only housing complexes don’t allow child residents – which is legal – so some grandfamilies are forced to move.
However, grandfamilies may be eligible for several federal tax credits: • A Child Tax Credit of up to $1,000 for each qualified grandchild, provided they lived with you for more than half the filing year and are under 17 at year’s end. • If you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, you may be eligible for an additional amount for grandchildren you support. • A Child and Dependent Care Credit for childcare expenses incurred so you can work or seek employment. • If you adopt your grandchildren, you may be eligible for a nonrefundable Federal Adoption Credit of up to $12,970 per child. In addition, depending on your income and the health/disability status of your grandchildren, you may also be eligible for benefits from Medicaid, your state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and numerous other federal, state and local aid programs. Helpful resources for grandfamilies include: • Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, a government-sponsored site at. www.usa.gov, that provides links to various subject-matter experts. • AARP’s comprehensive GrandFamilies Guide (at www.aarp.org). • Benefits QuickLINK, an AARP tool to find out whether you or your grandchildren qualify for 15 different public benefits. • GrandFacts, a searchable database at www.aarp.org, where you can locate key state and local resources, foster care policies and services, public benefits, financial and education assistance, and relevant state laws. • Generations United, whose “Grandfamilies” website highlights challenges often faced by these households (www.gu.org/OURWORK/ Grandfamilies.aspx). Do something to honor your own grandparents this Grandparents Day. And if you know others who are raising their grandkids, make sure they know about the many available resources.

The following morning I struggled a bit getting out of bed knowing there was another long hot day ahead of me. Joey is a rugged 17-year old and needs no encouragement for lacrosse, hunting, food or sleeping late. A text message from Darrell appeared asking us where we were. It was already 7:05 a.m. so we navigated the morning rush hour of Port Aransas traffic which consisted of a ten year old kid driving a golf cart past our driveway.
and to the rear the transom. The stem had started out as three boards of different widths about three feet long glued one on top of the other. They were then run across the table saw to create a single board that when looked at from either end somewhat resembles an arrow sign. Wendy marked a two inch strip and then every few inches a another mark was placed for screw holes on both ends of the side board. Joey grabbed the drill and pre-drilled the holes where marked. Darrell applied the epoxy to the lower side of the stem and the plywood inner side where it would meet the stem. He then grabbed the drill and some wax dipped screws.
Get it right the first time At that moment fellow boat builder Ernie Jamison walked into the shop. “Hey, Ernie, c’mere, you can help us.” Darrell called out. Ernie knelt down and grabbed a sideboard. “Hi y’all.” Wendy said. “Let’s build some boats!” I couldn’t help but notice the manicured nails and thought to myself this party was about to get real. Any reservations I had about Wendy’s ability to hold her own and work as hard as anyone else were soon dispelled. She wasn’t there for show, she
building a boat. The transom is stood up on end, epoxy is applied to its sides and the rear inner sides of the side boards. The parts are aligned from the bottom up and screwed in place. A precut spreader jig is fitted upright into the middle of the bottomless boat giving the boat girth and the sides are screwed to it. Darrell yelled over the happy chatter that had broke out among all of us. Eyebrows were raised and faces resembled question marks. “Get the saw horses, let’s flip it.” (Photos available for download at zenfolio.com/joecalvey)

Words on a page…
Milk Drive will play the Back Porch on Saturday.
Words on a page. Words on a page. Here we go… I’ve traded one addiction for another. My Shark Week compulsion from last week has been replaced this week by the Little League World Series. I really wonder what normal people do with their time and more importantly, how do they get through life without watching ten straight hours of shark bite reenactments or boys from Chinese Taipei trying to steel third base. Thank the good Lord for live music or I might never leave the house. I did somehow manage to break away and catch some great bands last weekend.
Ruben V played the Back Porch on Friday. talent whose music plays him. He’s a pure spirit and a bonified guitar master. There is nothing contrived about Ruben V. He’s the real deal. Will Gage is a young man who started playing professionally at the ripe old age of 12 and frequently shows up with several noteworthy bands (Dust Devils, Swindles, etc) as sideman on either lead guitar or drums. Most recently he’s been fronting his own trio at Giggity’s about once a month and will be back on September 21st.
Yet another pretty good Americana band from Austin…
Noel McKay & Brennen Leigh…
Tanner Louis and the Aviators played the Back Porch last Thursday. On Thursday I dropped into the Back Porch to see, Tanner Louis and the Aviators (Austin, TX). Actually, I love it when I get to walk into a place to hear a new band play that I know nothing about and have no expectations. The minute I walked into the Porch, several employees rushed me and said, “These guys are good! Really Ronnie, you need to listen to them!” Now when that happens to me, I generally pay attention. What I saw was four young guys on stage in a pretty normal configuration, two guitars, bass and drums. The singer was playing acoustic and had a nice enough singing tone but I didn’t hear anything earth shattering. The songs were original and didn’t immediately bore me with clichés about drinking beer and chasing girls around a dance floor but also didn’t grab me and speak to me and tell me stuff that I didn’t know I needed to hear. In short, it wasn’t Steve Earle or Guy Clark or Townes Van Zandt or Billy Joe Shaver material but it did manage to hold my attention. If forced to pigeon hole these boys, I’d say they’re yet another up and coming Americana band from Austin that are pretty good…but not yet dazzling like Della Mae, Dirty River Boys, blacktopGYPSY, Uncle Lucius, Folk Family Revival, Milk Drive, Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh, Statesboro Revue, The Wheeler Brothers, who have that special combination of energy, drive and songs that demand your attention and won’t let you leave. Try harder boys, I think you’ve got the talent but need to kick it up a notch! There are a kazillion pretty good bands out there… go a little crazy.
Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh played Shorty’s last Saturday. On Saturday, I got to see an absolutely delightful duo, Noel McKay and Brennen Leigh (Austin, TX) perform at Shorty’s. This is a show that came about in a sort of strange way. My gal, Carol Elliott, called me up on the phone one night last winter and told me she was out driving around and heard some music playing outside somewhere that sounded really good and for me to come help her find it. OK… why not? So, I drove over to Avenue G by Shells Restaurant and followed my ears to a makeshift outdoor stage where we found these two artists playing. We literally crashed the private party they were hired to play but nobody seemed to mind. On their break we introduced ourselves and found out that Noel was previously with the family act, The McKay Brothers and that

Pick of the Week…
as a musician while attending Texas Tech where he befriended Pat Green. Morrow has sold over 200,000 albums independently. His 2002 release Outside the Lines reached No. 28 on Billboard’s Country Album chart. SoundScan ranked him No. 7 among “country debut artists” that year. He has recorded 14 CD’s since 1997. William Clark Green (Lubbock, TX) will open this outdoor show. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children under 12 are free. Bring your lawn chairs… the show starts around dusk.
My PICK OF THE WEEK goes to Milk Drive (Austin, TX) this week. They will be playing the Back Porch on Saturday night. I first heard about Milk Drive from my Okie friend Joe Mack. They’re a young New Grass band who are turning heads all over the nation. Of the four members, Brian Beken, Noah Jeffries, Dennis Ludiker are multi-instrumentalist who trade guitars, fiddles and mandolins around like they are baseball cards. Matt Mefford plays upright bass. The Todd Dorn will term “New Grass” describes this kind of progressive bluegrass using traditional play Giggity’s on bluegrass instruments (acoustic guitar, Saturday night. stand-up bass, mandolin, fiddle and banjo) but incorporating jazz and rock into the arrangements and sometimes using non-traditional chord progressions and electric instrumentation. Nickle Creek, The String Cheese Incident, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and New Grass Revival are examples of this flourishing genre. Prepare yourself to be amazed… this is excellent stuff.
Cory Morrow to play Sharkey’s… Red Dirt artist Cory Morrow (Austin, TX) will play another installment of Cory Morrow the Port Aransas Summer Fest concert series at Sharkey’s this Saturday night. will play the Port Morrow is a Texas country music singer Aransas Summer who has gained a good bit of popularity Fest at Sharkeys on throughout the Southwest. On Friday, I paid homage to a couple of San Antonio guitar slingers that I know pretty well. Ruben V played the Porch and Will Owen Gage played Giggity’s. On Friday, August 23rd, Americana favorite Darryl Lee Rush (Dallas, TX) will return to the Back Porch, the blues and classic rock band Cathouse (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Giggity’s, Billy Snipes will be at The Upper Deck, Victoria’s Secret (Victoria, TX) will be at the Tarpon Ice House and island veteran Leslie Willey Sr. (who wants us to call him Uncle Willey now) will play Shorty’s from 8-12. Willey has been playing Shorty’s for about fifty years now. On Saturday, August 24th, country crooner Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX) will return to Giggity’s, Uel Jackson will be at the Tarpon Ice House and Lyrical Bynge (Corpus Christi, TX) will rock Shorty’s.

Brennen used to play with bluegrass bands. We exchanged contact info and eventually got them down here to play Shorty’s. I’m telling you, I really, really love these guys. They are GREAT! They have a ton of superb original songs about everything from Andrew Jackson on a Twenty Dollar Bill to Let’s Go to Lubbock on Vacation (and Then I’ll Know You Really Love Me) and El Coyote (which Noel co-wrote with Guy Clark). They are both quite excellent on guitar and trade off tasty lead runs on every song. Best believe, I’ll be bringing them back before long. They are mighty impressive.
