Lifeguard Station Down
Some knucklehead in a Big Ole Truck decided it would be a great idea to run over the lifeguard stations on the beach along the south end of the seawall. He did a pretty good job of demolishing them and the myriad of reasons for not doing this were pointed out to the driver when he was arrested before he reached the JFK.

Flying Humans Seen Over Port A!
Team “Mojo” brought in this 500-pound Blue Marlin in the Gulf Cup Marlin Classic last weekend. The angler that caught the fish is Alan Latham from Lamar and the Captain is Captain Brian Phillips from Port Aransas. The team won a trophy for their big catch. If you have seen what looks like a giant flying squirrel over Port Aransas lately it’s not because someone slipped something funny in your eggnog. No, it’s only Beau Riebe, Skydive South Texas General Manager and Lisa Murphy, Coffee Waves’ Chief Panini Maker on a wingsuit flight.
In past years the stations were made of wood but that made them prime kindling for Island Beach Fires so a few years ago the switch was made to these tubular structures which don’t burn but as you can see may be demolished by drivers with trucks bigger than their brains. Unfortunately for this fellow these new and improved stands cost $10,000 each which has the potential of bumping the charges for flattening one up to a felony. Fortunately these stands were quickly replaced, which was a good thing because the morning after the attack a lifeguard in one of the new stands spied a couple of people in a small inflatable dingy which the off-shore winds were pushing toward Cuba. By the time the lifeguard reached them they had abandoned their craft and were about to swim for it. So if any of our Island visitors are considering flattening our lifeguard stands with their Bubba Truck, we suggest you pursue the alternative t o u r i s t activities of feeding the seagulls; or better yet, just dig a big hole in the beach and sit in it. They don’t put you in jail for that.

That’s Beau in the suit and Lisa hitching a ride at what we would guess to be about 9000 feet in this surreal shot. It looks like a different world from up there. If you have never jumped from a perfectly good airplane but would like to the folks at Skydive South Texas jump most weekends from Mustang Island Airport in Port A. No experience is needed if you jump under a tandem chute. You pretty much just jump and enjoy the ride. Lately the Skydive South Texas divers have been jumping into Whataburger Field at the beginning of Hooks games. Those guys know how to make an entrance.

Final Outcome Of Legislative Bills (Part 4) From General Legislative Session
By Todd Hunter, District 32
On June 14th, the office of the Governor determined the final outcome of the bills which had managed to pass out of both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate during the Regular Session of the 83rd Texas Legislature. During the twenty days following the end of a regular session, the Governor of Texas has the ability to sign bills in to law, pass them in to law without a signature or to veto them. It is during these twenty days that members of the Texas House and Texas Senate find out if the bills they worked on during the session will become law or not. The 83rd Texas Legislature succeeded in sending a little over fourteen hundred bills to the Governor. Here are some of the bills that were passed in to law: • House Bill (HB) 2414 which is related to open meetings of governmental bodies held by videoconference call and to written electronic communications between members of a governmental body. • HB 2451 pertains to the exclusion by taxable entities engaged in providing services as an agricultural aircraft operation of certain costs in determining total revenue for purposes of the franchise tax. • HB 2473 which addresses the use of sales and use tax proceeds by economic development corporations in connection with housing facilities for certain institutions of higher education. • HB 2478 relating to the collection, study, and reporting by the Texas Workforce Commission of certain information regarding shortages in high-wage, high-demand occupations. • HB 2512 addresses the disclosure of certain information to the secretary of state for use in voter registration or the administration of elections. • HB 2550 pertaining to the consolidation of the Higher Education Enrollment Assistance Program and the Higher Education Assistance Plan and the transfer of certain enrollment assistance duties to institutions of higher education and to measures to enhance medical education. • HB 2571 is related to the inspection of certain information regarding the production, transportation, sale, and marketing of oil and

University to auction off the “12THMAN” license plate
No one has ever had 12TH MAN on an official Texas license plate. Now for the first time, Texas A&M University and MyPlates.com will auction the right to display the one and only 12THMAN license plate. Aggie fans and former students can register your interest in the Auction at www.myplates.com/12THMAN. Texas A&M will hold the auction online. Bidding opens August 12th and ends September 12th – two days prior to the Aggies’ SEC showdown with defending national champion Alabama at Kyle Field. Proceeds from the 12THMAN Auction benefit Texas A&M University and the General Revenue Fund of Texas. My Plates will donate its share to the University. This is the first time 12THMAN has ever been available on a Texas license plate, and it could be the last. The winner of the 12THMAN Auction wins this plate for a 10-year term, with first dibs on renewing the plate after that. The winner also has full rights to transfer or sell the plate to someone else.
By law, only a Texas license plate sold at auction by My Plates can be transferred. However, if the winner of the 12THMAN plate chooses never to sell and instead hand the plate on to heirs, the plate might never be available again. That means this may be the first and only time this coveted plate message is available for sale. The plate has never been available before because only six letters were allowed on personalized plates in Texas until 2011. When the State made seven letters available, the plate message 12THMAN was reserved for auction, understanding such a highly sought-after plate has tremendous potential to raise money for the State of Texas and Texas A&M University. “The 12th Man tradition at Texas A&M dates back to 1922 and signifies the loyalty and selfless service that is embodied by Aggies everywhere,” said Texas A&M Senior Associate Athletics Director Jason Cook. “As a special honor, we’ll present the 12THMAN license plate to the My Plates auction winner in front of nearly 90,000 fans during the Texas A&M vs. Alabama game September 14th.”

Pitching Against Time
By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Only ten pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball have pitched for 24 or more years. Four of them are in the Hall of Fame at this time and another should be in the future. But, as you will discover, longevity does not necessarily guarantee enshrinement into baseball heaven. A total of forty-one pitchers have toed the rubber for twenty or more years. You will recognize some of those Hall-of-Fame names like: Cy Young (22), Warren Spahn (21), Hoyt Wilhelm (21), “Red” Ruffing (22), Don Sutton (23), Early Wynn (23), Walter Johnson (21), Gaylord Perry (22), Ted Lyons (21), Tom Seaver (20), and Pete Alexander (20).

SPORTS
Debut in 1966 Nolan Ryan made his debut for the New York Mets in 1966. With stops in California with the Angels, Houston with the Astros, and finally in Texas with the Rangers, “The Ryan Express” retired in 1993 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 on his first try. Most of us think he can still pitch and so does he. “Ryan’s the only guy who puts fear in me. Not because he could get me out, but because he could kill me if he hit me. You just hoped to mix in a walk so you could have a good night and go 0-for-3,” said Reggie Jackson.
Twenty-five years Two players have pitched for 25 seasons in the Majors. They are Jim Kaat and Charlie Hough. Jim “Kitty” Kaat won 16 Gold Gloves during his career, second only to Greg Maddux, and struck out 2,461 batters. He also won 283 games; that’s more than Whitey Ford, Jim Palmer, or Juan Marichal won in their careers, yet Kaat has not yet been elected into the Hall of Fame. After retirement, Kaat entered the broadcast booth for 22 years and won seven Emmy Awards for his work. “My dad was a big Philadelphia Athletics fan, so I grew up idolizing Connie Mack and “Lefty” Grove, who was my first hero, and Bobby Shantz, who was my pitching model,” said Jim Kaat.
These guys were not just pitching against lefthanders, or designated hitters. They weren’t pitching against home run hitters or call ups searching for a cup of coffee in the big leagues. Line drive hitters or drag bunt specialists made no difference. These guys loved the game too much to leave. They were pitching against time. Andy Purvis is a local author. This next guy pitched so long he has a surgery procedure named after him. Tommy John found a home on the mound for 26 seasons. He pitched his first game in 1963. After 12 seasons, John injured his elbow and required surgery. After a year in recovery, he returned to finish with 288 wins, an ERA of 3.34, and he struck out 2,245. John, a ground-ball pitcher, threw his sinkerball for seven different teams during his career. No doubt the surgical procedure on his elbow which has been named after him helped him prolong his career. Tommy John once said, “When they operated on my arm, I asked them to put in a Koufax fastball.

Patriots Fans Rush to Swap Aaron Hernandez Jerseys Fans of the New England Patriots rushed to trade in jerseys bearing the name of former tight end Aaron Hernandez, who is being held without bail at Bristol County Jail on charges of first-degree murder.
Leventhal said he would never sell a Hernandez jersey in his store, adding, “I find it distasteful.”
Howard to the Rockets After 20 months of twists and turns in the Dwight Howard saga, he made a decision on where he will play next season, the Houston Rockets. “I’ve decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets,” Howard tweeted. “I feel it’s the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I’m looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best.” Howard’s deal with Houston is worth $88 million over four years. If he had stayed with the Lakers he could’ve made another $30 million for one more season.
Dwight Howard vs. Tim Duncan Hernandez jersey exchange A fan shields his head in the sun while waiting to exchange his New England Patriots Aaron Hernandez football jersey at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on Saturday. Prosecutors have said that Hernandez orchestrated the execution of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd – found dead near Hernandez’s home in June. The Patriots released Hernandez less than two hours after his June 26 arrest. On Wednesday, the team issued a statement announcing that over the weekend the Pro Shop at Gillette Stadium would offer fans the opportunity to trade in the disgraced player’s jersey for that of another player on the team. A saleswoman at the Pro Shop in Foxborough, Mass., said Saturday that the store was “very busy” with fans opting to swap their No. 81 jersey. Close to 1,200 jerseys had been traded in by the afternoon, NBC Sports reported. Jerseys for quarterback Tom Brady and nose tackle Vince Wilfork were among the most popular sought in trades, the team said.
Late Friday evening, Howard had changed his twitter avatar to him wearing a Rockets uniform. Howard informed all the teams in the running of his decision one at a time, with the Lakers coming later in the day. “We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers. Naturally we’re disappointed,” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement. “However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great Lakers fans will be proud to support. To Dwight, we thank him for his time and consideration and for his efforts with us last season. We wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his NBA career.” For all the allure of the Lakers that he was so excited about after the trade that brought him to Los Angeles in the summer of 2012, Howard ultimately went with the team that gave him the best chance to win a championship now rather than later.
Dwight Howard vs. Tony Parker
Still, some fans view their Hernandez jersey as collectible and have chosen to auction their jersey online. On Saturday, there were more than 750 results listed on eBay for Aaron Hernandez jerseys. Some sellers were asking for up to $1,000 for a jersey with his autograph.
The Rockets had gone to great lengths to clear the way for his arrival, remaking their roster and offering a chance to partner with James Harden on the team that went 45-37 last season and pushed his former Oklahoma City Thunder team to six games in a first-round playoff loss.
Peter Leventhal, a sports memorabilia dealer at Boston’s Kenmore Collectibles, says there is little value to the Hernandez jerseys.
After being traded from the Orlando Magic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-team deal a year ago, Howard entered the summer unsure of what he might do because of the awful Lakers season that had unfolded. He will be happy only if the spotlight is on him…look out James Harden!

The need for a police boat has been brought home of late with several potentially deadly accidents, and an increase in thefts of boats and motors – police say Yamaha motors are the most popular with thieves. A boat was stolen from Marker 37 late last month and later found stripped in Night Hawk Bay. A water-borne burglar has been working the Commodores area in a kayak, in one case slipping onto a deck while the residents were inside, and in another case interrupted by police while trying to remove an aluminum propeller off of a motor.
CCPD officer Chris Hooper, known across The Island as the Island Cop because of his nearly thirty years of service here, told the ISAC that there have been several attempts at providing a boat to patrol The Island in the past but “it has always come down to money.”
The plan by police calls for the boat to spend at least 80% of its time on The Island, running across the Laguna Madre only for specific

Charlie Hough was praised for his longevity, his kindness, and a dancing knuckleball. He won as many games as he lost (216-216). Hough became the very first starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins’ expansion team in 1993, but is probably better known for being one of the three pitchers to give up a sixth-inning 475foot home run to Reggie Jackson in the 1977 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodger and the New York Yankees. The other two pitchers were local boy, Burt Hooten, and Elias Sosa. Hough has been elected to the Texas Rangers’ Hall of Fame.
The guy who pitched the longest: you guessed it, Nolan Ryan. This Texas legend and Hall of Fame pitcher spent 27 years standing on the bump, the loneliest place in a baseball stadium, the pitcher’s mound. Along the way he won 324 games, recorded a 3.19 ERA, all while striking out an unbelievable record of 5,714 batters. He also threw a record seven no-hitters. Nolan Ryan also holds the record for most losses in the live-ball era at 292, and the record for most strikeouts in a single season with an astonishing 383. The live-ball era is considered 1920 to the present.

Currently, the only regular water patrols on The Island by the City of Corpus Christi are along Packery Channel where two city boats patrol, but the officers on board do not have the power to arrest.
Judging by the reaction to the CCPD plan at the ISAC meeting it appears this time may be different. One issue that will need to be addressed if/ when the police boat takes to the water is which laws to enforce. Currently, officers said while they can enforce some city ordinances if there is damage to property or person, many of the tickets they would write for unsafe boating, wakes, or maritime offenses would fall under state jurisdiction and would be prosecuted in Justice of the Peace Courts rather then City Courts. In the past the City Attorney’s office has said there is currently no specific city ordinance to prosecute boaters who leave wakes unless the officer actually sees a boat leave a wake that does immediate damage to a dock. A new ordinance would need to be drafted to specifically address that offense, a matter the ISAC will likely take up as the project moves forward. Anyone interested in donating or helping to raise money for the project should contact the POA.

Finding Island Made Art on Facebook was “like a miracle” because it was just what she had been looking for. In January, 2013, she made Island Made Art a foursome. Visitors to the studio pick up on the wow! factor of the artists’ synergy as soon as they step in the door. The day that I was there doing the interview several groups of women stopped in and enthused over the various creations. The owner of the celebrated Polly Anna shrimp boat bought Jan’s “Surf and Turf” painting to give as a gift. Another group of four bought a painting of Jane’s that had been inspired by the ladies’ previous visit.

Island Made Art got launched in the suite now occupied by KustomInk but Jane and Jan had their heart set on the larger space next door. They would need more artists to share it with, though. Acrylic artist Patti Yoachum’s children were grown and busy with their own lives. She found her creativity sparking and dreamed of working with other artists in a dedicated studio space. Patti happened to be Tarpon Street looking for the business that used to be in the space that Jan and Jane were using. She discovered Island Made Art and thought, “Wow! What these two women are doing is just what I had in mind!” She joined Island Made Art in July of 2012.

One of the vacant suites at 722 Tarpon Street caught her eye. It was more room than she needed or could afford so she sought out someone with whom she could share it. A watercolor and graphic artist, Jane Andrle Gillette responded to Jan’s craigslist posting. Jane was in France taking an art class at the time but was eager to join up as soon as she got

No artistic skills or training required because the artists will lend a hand and will provide the supplies. The cost of the workshop is $35 and space is limited. So, as the Island Made Artists say, “for reservations, questions or cocktail suggestions, call 512-619-5239.” The first Uncorked Paintbrush class is scheduled for Thursday, July 18 starting at “wine-thirty (6:30 p.m.) and will feature painting on fabric. Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Good advice from Ray Wylie Hubbard… I picked this up off of Facebook. It’s an excerpt from a series of writings by Texas music guru, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and I thought it was not only funny but pretty dead on advice to young bands…

1. Hey young bands, don’t use in your ear monitors at a club. It looks stupid. Quit it. You ain’t Bon Jovi. 2. OK especially Texas Red Dirt bands… if you gonna steal a riff and write a song, don’t make it as obvious as ‘Stranglehold.’... jeez.
4. Don’t do walk-on music at a club gig. It’s hokey. Cut the sound off for three minutes before you go on so the crowd can’t compare you to other bands (that are better than you) 5. Maybe right now having tasty guitar chops isn’t as important as being on the Texas music chart but someday it might be all you have and will come in handy. 6. Even at some gigs if you think of me as an old whore still turning tricks… you need to know I ain’t faking it.
Three Way Street will play Giggity’s every Thrursday. this week. Frontman Jimmy Simmons has a strong baritone voice and their song selection is excellent… lot’s of the new stuff mixed in with plenty of classics. This seems like a winwin to me!

I tried taking a little drive down the beach with my wiener dog, Peanut, that afternoon, but only made it from the jetty to the pier house before I started screaming at tourists. The temperature was about a thousand degrees and I almost had a head on collision with some knucklehead in a two story pick-up truck… and at the brisk speed of 6 MPH. I kept thinking, “You know, maybe Winter Texans ain’t so bad.” So for mental preservation, I opted off the beach and headed to my friend’s house for a nice protected backyard BBQ in the solace of Charlie’s Pasture . There would be plenty to do later and I needed time to decompress.

and headed to the Back Porch to catch my favorite big horn party band, Cruise Control. Man, I love their harmonies! The sun was going down and I knew the fireworks show wasn’t far behind. I had planned to watch the fireworks from the upper Carol Elliott deck of the Island Queen played the Tarpon but the boat wasn’t in its Ice House last usual spot in the marina Friday. behind the Porch. I found out later they got tangled up in something and went dead in the water for most of the night. So we found an empty spot on the docks to sit and watched the show from there. We could hear great patriotic music blasting from the Porch and it was another perfect Fourth of July in Port A. Later we headed over to Shorty’s to hear Jul and the Chrome Wheels (South Padre Island, TX) and later Giggity’s to catch the Cord Carpenter Band from Austin. Decompression complete!
More music than you can shake a stick at…
7. When in a music store and you want to try out a guitar, plug it into an amp… don’t ask if they got a mirror.
The live music calendar was…well… hotter than the Fourth of July last week. With the return of Tiffany Tuesday to the Tarpon Ice House, I got the ball rolling early on Tuesday before the onslaught of tourists got here. Tiffany Duckworth Tiffany Duckworth plays the Tarpon Ice is a special kind of House on Tuesdays. gal around our little island. She and her man, Joe Duckworth, own an antique store on Cotter where they sell “beachy Hemingway chic” furniture and décor as well as musical instruments and accessories…all kinds of neat stuff. Really it’s a very cool store and they are very cool people. Tiffany did her Tuesday show at the Ice House for a good while last year, then took a long break. Now she’s back, and back with a vengeance. Tiffany plays a solo alt folkrock thing and is a very talented lady. I think she’s adorable. She’s doing her show over there every other Tuesday now. It’s a goodern!

don’t mind sharing our little slice of paradise with a few out-of-towners from time to time. At least they had the good sense to know where to come. I must admit though, I was happy to see them leave. That insanity starts to wear a little thin after a while.
DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend…
Here are recommendations for the weekend: our favorite son, Cody Angel is back home from school for the weekend and playing a couple of gigs… tonight, Thursday, July 11th at the Back Porch and Saturday the 13th at Giggity’s. These will be Cody’s only shows in Port A for quite some time, so don’t miss it. Also tonight, Reckless Kelly and Josh Grider will be in downtown Corpus at Brewster Street. Tomorrow, Friday, July 12th, the great Americana band from Ft. Worth, blacktopGYPSY will play the Back Porch. This is the show to catch this weekend. This band features fiddler, Heather Stalling, who happens to be married to Max Stalling, who, by no coincidence, is playing the Back Porch on Saturday. Also on Friday catch the wonderful string band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) at Shorty’s, Raeanne and the Ride (Port A, TX) at Giggity’s, and Mama Tried (Galveston, TX) will be at the House of Rock. The Rich Cody Angel will play the Lockhart Band (Victoria, Back Porch on Thursday and TX) will be at Roberts Point Giggity’s on Saturday night. Park for another installment of the summer concert series, Sunset Sounds. On Saturday, July 13th, the bluegrass band Get Off the Lawn will be at Shorty’s, Joe King Carrasco will be at Dr. Rockits and Larry Joe Taylor will be at the South Texas Ice House. So much music, so little time…
During the course of the next two days, I saw performances by Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX), Will Owen Gage (San Antonio, TX), Two Tons of Steel (San Antonio, TX), Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX), J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX), John Cortez (Corpus Christi, TX) and Daddy Dale West and the Comanche Moon Band (South Austin, TX). On Sunday, I attended the weekly Open Jam at the Tarpon Ice House hosted by the great Uel Jackson and later got my blues fix with Antone and the All Stars (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s. That’s a lot of music and I slept like a rock Sunday night. It was a long blacktopGYPSY will play the Back Porch this Friday. beautiful weekend and I guess I
