We’ve dodged speed traps while waiting for the Spring Breakers to show up and last weekend the high tides on some beaches flooded beach tents and dry sand in other places bogged them down. As of this writing there is an Audi buried up to the gunwales on the beach in front of the seawall. It seems no one is immune from the radar gun as late last week Island City Council person Colleen McIntyre was a casualty when she was pulled over near the bridge where one industrious officer has been running radar as half of a tag team with a motorcycle officer who then runs down the culprit. Then husband Jack got popped on Whitecap on his way home from work. Colleen inquired if the city had a Family Plan for tickets but was informed it is the same Family Plan as the one for the new Street Maintenance Fee the council is putting in place. Ouch. Here’s a radical idea to survive the Spring Break Crazy Season – drive the speed limit, it reduces your chance of a ticket by quite a bit. But so far traffic hasn’t been too bad and once the wind laid down the weather has been pretty close to perfect for Spring Break fun. One knucklehead decided that with all the police officers on The Island it would be a great time to burglarize some Island houses. For details see the Police Blotter in this issue, but suffice it to say his timing was a little off.
Offshore and canals The wind laid down enough late last week for fisherpersons to make a trek offshore and they report that fish are biting if you are willing to go out beyond the 35-mile mark where the water gets deep. Islanders have also reported sighting more dolphins in the canals of late. They’ve been working the Main Canal and the Intracoastal over by Snoopy’s and Doc’s.
Island Showcase The second annual Padre Island Showcase and Home Tour is on for Saturday, Sunday April 6-7. The event is sponsored by the Island Moon and the idea is to show off all the things that make up the Island lifestyle. Last year there were about thirty homes in the tour and a showcase for Island companies at the Seashore gym. Farmer Market The farmers market over at Island Presbyterian Church has gone weekly. It will be held each and every Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the church and any and all vendors of any kind are invited to set up at no charge. The good news is that the produce vendors will be there each week as well as a cheese vendor. For questions contact Kae over at the church and we’ll see you there.
Spring Break help Spring Break has produced its share of fender benders along SPID and Apollo Towing has set up at the Packery Parking lot to haul in the damage. 20,000 Easter Eggs and Kids to Find Them Saturday, March 30 is the day, and Billish Park is the place. It’s the 16th Annual Kiwanis Easter Egg hunt and it’s free and everyone is invited. The fun starts at 11 a.m. with a Moon jump, bouncy house sponsored by Island Baptist Church, a merry-go-round, train, and face painting for the kids. The Island in the Son Methodist Church is providing hot dogs. Things kick off at 11 a.m. and the egg hunt starts at noon with categories from babies all the way up to 12 year-olds. $48 Million on Flour Bluff ISD Bonds to go Before Voters in May

By Dale Rankin In the 121 year history of the Flour Bluff Independent School District there have been two previous bond elections. In May of this year there will be a third for $48 million, with about half of that total going for improvements to the athletic facilities. A citizens committee made up of residents of Flour Bluff and Padre Island began meeting last year to focus on the needs of the district. They toured every school and campus in the district and recommended renovating and adding classrooms, improving student and staff safety, meeting state standards for public schools, and minimizing the effect of improvements on the tax rate. That committee recommended a Bond Election of $48 million to be put before voters on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The improvements include the following: $948,812 for the Early Childhood Center; $7.2 million for improvements to the library and cafeteria (which are currently shared) at the Primary and Elementary schools; $3.3 million for improvements at the Intermediate Campus; $5.9 million in improvements at the Junior Bonds continued on A6

Photo by Donald Hatch By Dale Rankin The first weekend of Spring Break 2013 is now behind us and I think it’s safe to say it has been a mixed bag. On the Padre end it’s pretty much been business as usual except for the Annual Thursday and Friday Spring Break Speed Traps.
We expect those as the Rites of Spring which mark the beginning of the summer season. Expect a massive traffic jam during mid-day on Saturday and Sunday, but if that’s all we have to endure that’s not so bad.

Island Burglar Retires Trophy for Dumbest Crime Ever Alert Police Officer traps Island burglar on Yardarm
When plastic bags or trash are picked up by the wind they often end up on spoil island where they become a permanent eyesore and threat to wildlife, unless Islanders do some thing about it. On March 23rd starting at 9:00 a.m. Islanders will fan out across the spoil islands to help clean up the Spoil Islands & canals. The event is sponsored by the Island Beautification Trust and Padre Island Yacht Club. Owners of small boats and other volunteers are needed – please plan to muster at 8:30am at the PIYC courtesy dock or at the Cobo De Bara or Cartagena boat ramps to collect gloves, trash bags and other supplies. Boaters and volunteers will navigate through the Spoil Islands and canals collecting trash and debris. After filling trash bags, boaters will take them to dumpsters located at PIYC or Cobo De Bara or Cartagena boat ramps and repeat until around noon. The Beautification Trust will provide lunch… hamburgers, chips, soft drinks & PIYC will provide dessert around noon on the bottom deck of PIYC. Also, prizes and give a ways will be awarded during dessert, so come join in the fun and support cleaning up our Island. Neighborhood Watch on The Island Getting Reorganized Here’s how you can get involved By Michelle Gouin After the string of robberies in our neighborhood (our next door neighbor included), I decided to call the police and start a neighborhood watch. I partnered with the Corpus Christi Police Department, and Brenda Rodriguez to find out how to best prevent crimes. I attended a meeting at La Palmera Mall Neighborhood Watch Meeting and found out the latest tips on staying safe and put them in a newsletter for our neighbors, and some of the tips were: 1.) Make sure your high dollar items in the house are engraved with your name, and the serial numbers are written in a safe place. Police cannot track your items once they are stolen if they do not have your numbers. It is easy to pawn items that are not etched or engraved with your name. 2.) Burglars are breaking in from your garage.

Apparently the fellow who decided Sunday was a good day for Island thieving was the only person on The Island who failed to notice the heavy police presence during Spring Break week but that was only his first mistake.

A Little Island History...
Jim Bowie Captures 200 Mexican Soldiers with 20 Men By Dale Rankin After his successful fight against the Tonkawa Indians Bowie’s fame as a leader meant that anytime trouble was brewing he was called on to lead. In July 1832 Texian colonists in Nacogdoches captured a Mexican vessel near the mouth of the Brazos River and radicals within the Texas camp were pushing Stephen F. Austin to declare himself in favor of the states rights Mexican government being formed by Antonio Lopez de Santa Annain Mexico City. Austin wished to stay clear of Mexican politics for fear that the central government would revoke his empresario status and ban the immigration of norteamericanos into Texas. The uprising in Nacogdoches, largely due to the heavy tariffs on imports by the Mexican government, threatened to inflate the conflict so Austin called on Bowie, who was back in the San Saba country looking for silver, to go to Nacogdoches and put down the trouble. The Mexican garrison was lead by Colonel Jose de la Piedras and the day before Bowie’s arrival 300 Texans had answered the call to “rouse up your neighborhood” had marched into Nacogdoches forcing Piedras’ 200 men to throw the rifles and ammunition they could not carry with them down water wells and
flee. At that point the 300 Texans ignored their commanders and became little more than a roving mob looking for trouble. Twenty good men and a strong bluff Bowie took charge and disbanded all but twenty men and went after Piedras’ troops. Why he would send 280 home in order to attack 200 Mexicans has been lost to history but that’s what he did. His small band raced toward the Angelina River to the south on the same road they believed the Mexicans had taken. Even with several hours head start History continued on A3

Without a doubt the strangest thing I have seen so far was last Sunday at brunch at the Holiday Inn when I looked out at the beach and there was a Japanese Zero flying northbound about thirty feet above the surf line; Sundays and Zeros together make we Americans a bit nervous. But like my uncle at Pearl Harbor, by the time I realized what was happening it was too late to get a shot off so I got no photo. The thing just swerved out to sea to avoid the Packery Jetties then headed back over the beach and continued on north until it disappeared. I don’t think it was actually a Zero, I’m not sure exactly what kind of plane it was, but it sure enough had a red meatball on the fuselage.
There’s gonna be some raised eyebrows when Spring Breakers go back home and tell all their friends when they woke up on the beach Sunday afternoon they saw a Japanese Zero fly overhead… “Was the pilot a pink elephant?”
High tides and wet tents
High tides left beaches on the Padre end inundated and beachgoers scrambling for dry spots last weekend. Tent campers along Whitecap beach got a rude awakening Sunday as high tides pushed water up to the dune line as the few hardy souls camped out in tents tried in vain to stem in the oncoming tide by digging motes around their camp sites.
South of Packery Channel the beach was divided into several sections as large portions of the beach were covered in water pushing most beachgoers toward the dunes in search of higher and drier ground. By Monday everything was back to normal and the beach was near perfect. City crews have done a great job of keeping the beach free of litter, not an easy task given the crowds. On Sunday this fellow got stuck on the beach near the north end of the seawall and several Sand Crabs came to his rescue but they all wanted $40 to pull him out. He declined and instead dug himself out.
It was a peculiar beach configuration in front of the seawall as high tides cut the width of the beach in half and the only vehicle path was right up at the seawall. As we drove along we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of someone’s beach volleyball game.
The only part of the beach that was still nice and wide was at the south end of the seawall where crews only last week finished pumping in sand from Packery Channel to widen the beach. There is plenty of sand there but unless you have a serious fourwheel drive vehicle you will get stuck trying to drive through.

The Mexicans crossed the river in force and, not being sure how many Texans they were facing, camped for the night. The next morning Bowie sent a note with a man named Bolina to Piedras with the bold demand that Piedras surrender. Piedras was unmoved by his second in command Captain Francisco Medina believed the 200 Mexican troops were in mortal peril and drew his pistol and placed it against Piedras’ head demanding he meet Bowie’s demand. Piedras withdrew his sword and handed it to Medina and his command along with it. Bowie rode up with the rest of his little band of men and disarmed the soldados. He marched the 200 Mexicans into Nacogdoches under guard by his twenty men to thunderous applauses. With twenty men he had done what the 300 Texans had failed to do only days before. In collaboration with his fight with the Indians this victory against overwhelming odds made Bowie the man to call when Austin, and later Sam Houston, needed a leader. He now had political power which he set out to turn into profit.
I eat horse The first goal was to move the capital of Coahuila de Tejas from Saltillo to the border town of Monclova. He arrived in San Antonio from Austin’s capital San Felipe along with his traveling companion Sam Houston who had just recently arrived in Texas. When they arrived in San Antonio they heard the news that the state’s governor had died and Bowie’s father in law Juan Martin Veramendi had been appointed to take his place. Bowie arrived in Saltillo on February 7, 1833 and immediately called on Veramendi who was caught up in the intrigue between the warring factions for control of Mexico. The men, along with Bowie’s companion Caiaphas Ham, sequestered themselves in Veramendi’s house with armed guards outside; anyone entering had to give the password, “como caballo” which loosely translated means “I eat horse.” Bowie’s exploits in capturing the Mexican soldiers at Natchitoches and his fight with the Tonkawas were well known in Saltillo and combined with his father-in-law’s influence and the blue broadcloth suit which he donned once he reached the city he soon made the acquaintance of the influential members of the state legislature. He soon became known as fanfaron Santiago Bowie – Bowie the braggart but as Juan Seguin said, “they all knew that he was absolutely brave, and that they could depend upon his being fair to foe and loyal to friends.”
Saltillo to Monclova In a few scant weeks Bowie and Veramendi had the votes to move the state capital from Saltillo to Monclova on the Rio Grande where, closer to home, they could extract land grants from the state government and sell them to speculators in Texas; a practice that had a hand in the coming war between Texas and Mexico.

History continued from A1 the Mexican troops moved slowly enough that Bowie’s men were able to get ahead of them and were lying in wait at a crossing of the Angelina when Piedras’ troops approached. Bowie watched as Piedras sent a mounted advance party to the river to reconnoiter the crossing. While their horses drank a single shot rang out and a Mexican sergeant fell from his saddle in the water. The remainder of the Mexicans retreated while Bowie pulled his small force from the riverbank and did the same. He had put fear into the Mexican troops without revealing his strength – or lack of.
Bowie with his brother Rezin traveled to New York, Washington, and Philadelphia by way of New Orleans. When they returned to the South they found themselves in the midst of a terrible cholera epidemic. Gov. Veramendi took his family from San Antonio to Monclova to avoid the disease but they were too late in leaving; while there first Veramendi’s wife died of the disease in a single day after her symptoms began, Veramendi was next, followed by their adopted son, and finally Bowie’s wife Ursala. By March 1834 the widowed Bowie was back in San Antonio, drinking, fighting, and as always looking to get his hands on more land. The legislature in Monclova had realized that the effort to separate Texas into a separate state might actually work. So to make quick money at no real risk the government of Coahuila y Tejas began auction off land in Texas in quantities up to eleven leagues per buyer with a tendollar minimum for each 177-acre plot. If the land didn’t sell at auction it could then be sold to any applicant for the ten-dollar minimum. The same legislature ended the empresario system which had been in place previously meaning that developers such as Austin could no longer buy land for settlement. With his connections in state government Bowie was in the perfect position to grab land legally rather than by writing fake claims as he had done in Louisiana and Arkansas. Bowie borrowed $750, had William B. Travis prepare his passport, and headed for Monclova. Within days Bowie had grants on part of the four hundred leagues of vacant Texas land which was being sold to raise money to fight the Comanches. Bowie stayed through December of 1834 by which time he had claim to more than 300 leagues of Texas land.
Miles and miles of Texas But Mexican politics intervened as Santa Anna consolidated power in Mexico City he dismissed the state legislature and governor who had been so liberally passing out the land grants. Whether the grants would be honored under his regime was unknown. But Bowie, ever the chameleon, was able to ingratiate himself with the new government and by April held grants to 850 square miles of Texas. But Santa Anna had heard of the corrupt nature of the grants and sent his brother-in-law Perfecto do Coz to Monclova to clean out the corrupt nest of speculators. Bowie led the local militia out and did his best to spark a fight with the Mexican regulars but to no avail. Bowie rode along the south bank of the Rio Grande to Matamoros where he picked up $40,000 for one of his land deals but by the time he got back to Monclova Coz was back and had issued a proclamation charging that “two or three designing and naturally turbulent foreigners, somewhat crafty in their machinations” had fomented upheaval in the state in order to separate Texas from Coahuila. Coz seized Bowie and his fellow travelers and sent them to Matamoros where the Mexican government seized all boats in order to use them to transport troops and munitions to the Texas Coast for the coming fight. They heard there were 3000 soldiers in Saltillo on their way to points north. Then on June 12 he and others managed to escape and in the next ten days traveled up the Texas Coast to the Lavaca River, stopping at the hamlet of Texana.

Beach bollards are not popular in Port A If there is one thing we can say for sure after the first weekend of Spring Break 2013 it is that people don’t like bollards – those wooden posts that prevent driving on certain parts of the beach. The area of beach between Horace Caldwell Pier and the south jetty where bollards were recently installed was empty over the weekend, while the beach beginning at the Newport Dunes Golf Course where the bollards stop was packed. That continued through the early part of this week as new arrivals all headed south until the bollards ended before finding a spot on the beach. It’s just a fact that people, at least Spring Breakers and Texans, like to keep their vehicle close by rather than haul their supplies past the bollards out to the beach. The campers in the county campground didn’t mind paying the daily usage fee, as the area was completely full, because once the fee was paid campers could drive through the bollards to their campsite. But right next door where it was free to go it was almost entirely empty because it required parking at the bollards and schlepping your gear across the beach. I think it is safe to say that when it comes to beaches, bureaucrats who try to improve what Mother Nature gave us always fail. Leave the beaches alone.
Martial Law in Port A Each year when Spring Break comes around there is an elephant in the room that everybody talks about but so far newspapers have not covered; well, that’s about to change. When it comes to Spring Break we Islanders are not nearly as wary of Spring Breakers themselves as we are of the law enforcement presence they attract. Other than the traffic jams they sometimes create Spring Breakers tend to stay on the beach and out of the neighborhoods; not so for the out of town law enforcement that descends on Port Aransas. Every Spring Break our phones here at the Word Factory light up with complaints about the out of town officers who are brought in during Spring Break to augment the Port Aransas Police Department and the Constable’s officers. No sooner do they show up than locals start complaining about how they are treated as they go about their daily lives. Let’s be specific here; it’s not the Port Aransas Police nor the Constables from Bobby Sherwood’s office that we’re talking about, they treat people with respect and use common sense and we hear no complaints about them. It is specifically the out of towners, including Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Homeland Security officers who implement what can best be described as martial law while they are here that draw the ire of locals and visitors alike. So far this week we have heard complaints about DPS troopers pulling people out of their
cars because their bumper was two inches into a crosswalk, asking for permission to search cars and when it is denied searching it anyway; homeland Security officers in full riot gear and carrying shouldered arms being aggressive with people on the ferry who are simply trying to get to Port Aransas to have a little time off and instead are treated like suspects before they even arrive.
One restaurant/bar had officers who identified themselves as being from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission walk in during the evening dinner rush to inspect each and every bottle behind the bar. Why then? This is not a place which is known to have problems.
One local counted thirteen DPS cars on Alister Street between Oakes and Avenue G last Thursday in the middle of the afternoon before the Spring Breakers even showed up; another local was walking home from the IGA with an armload of groceries and had to set them on the ground while he fished his ID out of his back pocket at the demand of some guy who flashed a badge of dubious origin – like walking down the street is a crime; another guy was pulled over on SH 361 after he failed to use his blinker when he pulled out of a Stripes parking lot (is that even the law?). Just about everyone in Port Aransas has a horror story and they get worse every year. There is a fine line between proactive policing and simple harassment. If you want to find out which category this behavior falls into just ask any Port Aransian and judge for yourself.
The questions asked each spring are always the same: What’s the goal here? Are we trying to keep the peace, run people off, or just get as much money as we can from the visitors while they are here? Do we not want Spring Breakers here? If so let’s just say that. Who is in charge here and why are they doing this? People have a right to know who is responsible for this and what is its purpose? Each year we debate whether to write about it, but ignoring it has just made it worse and this year it seems like it is worse than ever.
I saw a Spring Break crowd burst out of control on the beach in Port A many years ago when some idiot ran over a girl and instead of stopping stomped on the gas. The crowd erupted and pulled him from his car and was in the process of beating him to death when officers got to him. I get it; you need plenty of officers on hand in case things get hot and if there is a riot the first ones to get blamed will be law enforcement. But what does that have to do with pulling middle-aged locals out of their cars on shaky or non-existent probable cause and searching them and treating them like they are criminals just because they have the audacity to leave their homes during Spring Break?
At some point someone has to say enough is enough; I think we passed that point way back. Someone, somewhere, is making the decision to send these people down here; let’s find out who it is and have a talk with them. It’s time for participatory democracy to be heard from before an overbearing law enforcement presence kills the goose that laid the golden egg of Spring Break for local businesses. In this case enough is way too much.

On to the Alamo Bowie spread the word of the coming invasion the interests of the War Party and those of the land speculators were conspicuously one in the same. One editor protested that Bowie and others “cry wolf wolf, condemnation, destruction, was, to arms. To arms! When their only real objective was to deceive many persons and make them believe that an army is coming to destroy their property and annihilate their rights in Texas.” If Bowie and his fellow land speculators could remove all control of Texas from Mexican hands they had a chance to cash in on their land grants. The stage was set for revolution in Texas and Bowie, more than any other person, had a hand in bringing matters to this point. The inevitable march to the Alamo was on.

On March 7th the PIPPs Chapter of the Corpus Christi Red Hat Society held a luncheon at the Port Aransas Port Royal Restaurant. For amusement, the gals played the LCR dice game and won the many door prizes. Then off to the Port Aransas Community Center for the “Fashion and Flip-Flops...a Glimpse of Island Style” fashion show sponsored by the Port Aransas Garden Club. Lots of shopping, eating, drinking wine and cheering for the models was part of the days festivities. Red Hatters are now upto- date on “Island Style” chicness.
Our Island Girl Scout Troop 9611 was recently able to donate 18 cases of our beloved cookies to the soldiers and sailors overseas. Working with a third party nonprofit organization from San Antonio to help with the cost of shipping; it will be a special treat from home. Our girls worked hard to sell over 7,000 boxes of cookies during our recent cookie season. We will continue to meet through the end of May before taking a much needed break for the summer.

Marker 37 Does anyone know what the construction in front of Marker 37 is? John R. Bates Editor’s note: Well John, we’re glad you asked. We’ve been meaning to write about that for a couple of weeks. What you see over at Market 37 is a new metal storage building going up with a 16,000 gallon water tank to put it out in case it catches fire. Those metal building go up in a hurry. Bryan Gulley, the owner over at Marker 37 needed a place to store his gear and the city inspectors told him to do that he must have a water tank for firefighting. At first they suggested a 90,000 gallon tank. “You don’t know how much water that is do you?” Bryan asked. The fellow admitted he didn’t but it’s a lot, a whole lot. So Bryan brought in the 16,000 tank you see there even though the city is in the process of running a 3-inch water line out there with a fire hydrant. So in a way the tank is a 16,000 gallon monument to bureaucratic overreach…

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter’s summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.
The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly. Probably wasn’t the same elephant.
This is for everyone who sends me those heartwarming stories on the Internet. Bob Nash Island Editor’s note: That was a heart warming story Bob, in its own way; but we Moon Monkeys can attest to the fact that tales of elephants having long memories is more than a myth.
For fifty weeks out of the year the same man fed the elephants in the San Antonio zoo. He and the elephants had an easy peace and things were fine until the regular feeder went on vacation. The fellow who filled in for him thought it was great fun to tease the elephants by holding their food out under their noses – well, not their noses but you get the picture - then pulling it back when they reached for it with their trunks. It may have been fun for the fill-in feeder but the elephants didn’t think it was so funny. They bided their time but they didn’t forget.
The next summer when the regular guy went on vacation and the fill-in feeder came in the cage with their food one of them grabbed him around the waste with his trunk and pile drove him head first into the pavement and broke his neck, killing him on the spot. In police parlance he wasn’t DOA, Dead on Arrival –no- he was DRT – Dead Right There.
By the time news crews arrived the guilty elephant was shifting back and forth from one side to the other swinging his big trunk and waiting to see what was going to happen. He knew he did something bad, but the guy was teasing him and he remembered.
In the end, nothing happened to the elephant. Hey, when you go in the elephant’s cage and tease the elephant you take on certain risks. But you can be assured that the next time the regular elephant feeder went on vacation the guy who took his place went straight to the elephants and handed over their food without any funny business; feeders, like elephants, have long memories too.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Peewee's Animal Shelter
Peewee’s Animal Shelter is located at 1307 Saratoga and has been in operations since May, 1997. Peewee’s presently houses over 300 animals, including dogs, puppies, cats, kittens as well as, pigs, goats, rabbits and other barn animals. Peewee’s relies on donations only for its operation.
Shelter operations are accomplished strictly by donations. Peewee’s does not get any government, city or federal funding. Peewee’s helps those animals no one else will - the sick and the stray. The volunteers at Peewee’s work tirelessly to rehabilitate poor orphaned pets in the hopes that they will find new, loving homes. The dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, given regular heartworm preventative, and are on flea & tick prevention and medications as needed. South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center The Best Texas Has to Offer
By Brent Rourk A busy traveler can explore the corners of the world and enjoy many botanical gardens, wetlands, lakes, and nature centers, but few places have managed to create an environment that includes botanical gardens, exhibits, wetlands, nature trails, animal displays, live butterfly gardens, and more. One that has accomplished that feat is right in our backyard; the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. It should be on everybody’s ‘must see’ list and once you visit, you will likely return over and over. Located at 8545 South Staples in Corpus Christi, the grounds expand into a spacious
182 acre complex. From the parking lot visitors can see some of the attractive and active displays; a pond, several brilliant flower gardens, a Plumeria garden and viewing platform and a few greenhouses. But that is just the beginning. This Botanical Gardens includes animals, birds, reptiles, butterflies, a variety of additional gardens and more. Its carefully crafted design truly ensures a seamless transition with nature’s wetland habitats on South Staples. It is open from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. every day of the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve Day, and Christmas Day. Quite an ambitious schedule, but it is purposely organized to be available as much as possible for public enjoyment throughout the entire year. Clearly, it is not the average botanic gardens. Executive Director Michael Womack and his small, friendly and efficient staff are successfully stretching the dollars to maintain the array of stunning exhibits and further are engaging in ambitious expansion plans. That is not a small task for 182 acres, thousands of plants, several gardens, wetlands, and a wide assortment of animals. Somehow, through membership fees, admissions, grants, plant sales, donations, fundraisers, and gift shop sales, they make it
happen. They also add more features, exhibits, and gardens to the grounds every year. There is bound to be something engaging and memorable for every age group, every interest, and every person who visits the Botanical Gardens.
What Sets This Botanical Gardens Apart From Others
Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center; the pond (feed the fish while you are there), Butterfly House, Butterfly Garden, Butterfly Wing Sculpture, Reptile House, and playground are all designed to cater to children’s wants and needs. Many visitors define the Botanical Gardens as the perfect place to ponder life, to find peace minutes from the bustle of town, and to enjoy a variety of soothing shapes, sounds, and sights. The Nature’s Boutique Gift Shop has something for all ages and interests as well.
Traditionally, Botanic Gardens were places where a several “flower lovers” went to view the ubiquitous garden and nothing more. Certainly, there are many famous and indescribably beautiful and traditional botanical gardens in The United States. In addition to the beautiful and varied flower gardens and greenhouses, there is more to see at the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. The wetland habitat that comprises part of the 182 acres is a “nature lover’s” paradise. Children have a lot to look forward to during a visit to the South
Spring is definitely planting time for many gardens and blooming time for several plants, so plan a spring visit. Also the Botanical Gardens features their BIG BOOM Plant Sale & Gardening Festival in April. For photography buffs, the grounds provide a wealth of photo opportunities. A wide variety of flowers, animals and insects make great subjects for your wide angle or macro lens. The landscapes, buildings, pond, and large gardens also invite artist’s eyes and active cameras.
