Island Moon
Dee-Scoveries
Moon Over The Hudson by Devorah Fox devorahfox.com I’m a cat person. So I was a little nervous about going to stay with my sister Barbara for a week. Not long ago she rescued not one, not two, but three dogs. Not little ones, either: Labrador type mixed breeds. Still, she’s been a dog owner for just about her entire life and even worked in a kennel for a short time. I was confident that I would find Camille, the mom, and her sons Buster and Buckwheat to be well-behaved and they were. They were friendly but didn’t jump on or crowd or slobber on me. When it was time for the humans to leave the house, the dogs dutifully retreated to their kennels. Barbara had worked with the dogs to teach them to behave and had taken all three of her new charges for additional training. Buster, however, got special training as a therapy dog. He took a five-week course at “Doc's K-9 Training Center” in Kingston, New York. Karen Garelick is a retired vet who started the business which includes a doggy day care. Prospective therapy dogs are taught the standards set by Therapy Dog International. That organization sends a judge for the dogs’ final test. Barbara explains, “They are required to sit for a visit and not paw anyone.” They are trained to be comfortable around people in wheelchairs and to be directed by the movement of the wheelchair. The dogs learn to wait for people to exit doors first, then follow rather than charging ahead. Small dogs are allowed on laps. Barbara is trying to teach Buster to put his head on someone's lap. “It’s easier for them to pet him when he does,” she says. I got a chance to see Buster in action. We made a visit to the Baptist Home, a skilled nursing care home that’s part of the Community at Brookmeade in Rhinebeck. When we exited her car, Barbara put a special type of restraint on Buster. Although it fit around his face it wasn’t a muzzle. It consisted of a strap that goes around the dog's nose and another strap that goes around the neck, just behind the ears. Buster could still open his mouth if necessary. Barbara attached the leash to this halter and explained that it was to discourage Buster from pulling her when they walk. The design of the head halter causes the dog's nose to be turned down and back toward the person holding the leash making it difficult for the dog to pull. It doesn't cause any pain the way a choke chain or prong collar might, and it works better than attaching the leash to a collar fitting around the dog’s neck. That arrangement allows the dog full use of his strong shoulder muscles to pull while a halter does not. She tied a Therapy Dog International kerchief around Buster’s neck and I would swear that he stood a little taller and prouder as if he knew what was coming next. We visited two wards. Not everyone was alert and aware but in each group there were several who were. They were just delighted to see us and Buster was a real gentleman about getting petted by strangers. He even brought a smile to the staff members as we traversed the halls. Since then, Buster has been named the dedicated therapy dog for a dementia/ Alzheimer’s wing and has a standing visitation appointment at Ferncliff Nursing Home. I asked Barbara how she got involved in this in the first place. She says, “I like volunteering and I thought this would be fun. And it is.” I could see that having a chance to brighten someone’s day did as much for her as it did for the patients. Here in the Coastal Bend, Lee McQuay and her dog, Brandy, make therapeutic visits. Brandy is a Golden Retriever. Lee says that many different breeds from Yorkies to Great Danes and mixed breeds do therapy dog work. “Temperament is the factor, not the breed” when it comes to qualifying a dog for this service. Lee says that Brandy was” home-schooled.” Some years ago, Lee herself had been trained by dog trainer Tony Bender. Before Lee decided to get Brandy registered as a therapy dog, the dog had already been trained in obedience and manners and gotten her CGC (Canine Good Citizen) title. Therapy dog training meant taking Brandy to nursing homes for exposure to the medical environment, wheelchairs, IV poles, etc. Brandy proved to be a natural. “She gravitated to people needing her be it patient, family or staff. Two groups in this area do therapy dog testing: Therapy Dog Inc. and the Therapy Dog International that tested my sister’s dog Buster.
Lee explains that there’s a “slight difference in their testing procedures but basically identical in their criteria. International does the testing at specific locations, bringing in hospital equipment and is completed in one session.
‘Inc.’ requires three sessions on three separate days. The first is at a general location for the obedience part, followed by two separate visits at two separate medical facilities where you and your dog are observed and evaluated.”
Managers from area Murphy USA stores spent some time at Camp Aranzazu volunteering this week. This enthusiastic group of volunteers helped out by making camper notes, cleaning the Nature Center, repairing feathers on arrows for archery, helping with lunch in the Dining Hall and cleaning cabins, the pool and our Plaza. We can’t say thank you enough for this great group of volunteers. Photo by Jennifer Janecek
Courses are also available at Petsmart. Depending on the human/canine team, training takes at least a couple of months to complete. Therapy dogs serve at hospitals, rehab centers and nursing homes. Lee and Brandy now live in Mountain City, Tennessee and are also part of the “Tail Waggin’ Tutor” program as part of the Tennessee Literacy Program.. That involves taking the dogs to schools, libraries and other facilities to help children learn to read. Lee says that “it has been proven to be a good learning tool particularly for children just learning to read and/or having any problems. They are not intimidated reading ‘out loud’ to the dogs as they are with adults and classmates—dogs don’t make fun of them.” I can just picture it, can’t you? The visits that I made with Barbara and Buster were quite brief. Lee McQuay says “We try to keep visits short; knock on the door, ask if they would like a visit; if so, we go in, play it by ear:” Lee lets Brandy be petted and praised, maybe do a couple of tricks but primarily they let the patient or family dictate. “There are times when we are asked to sit, visit and listen; Brandy will quietly lay down while the patient and/or family unburden their soul(s). We develop a sense of what is needed, and I am fortunate that Brandy leads the way!” Nursing homes usually only require proof of rabies and well-mannered dogs. Hospitals are much more stringent for insurance purposes. Lee says that the therapy dog must have all the proper credentials. Handlers have their own set of criteria to meet, depending of the hospital’s protocol which include a detailed application form, background check, letters of recommendation, TB test, flu vaccine, photo ID, two-hour orientation/walk-through, and another observation of the handler and the dog working. Before our visit to the Baptist Home my sister and I made a separate trip so that she could have her test for TB approved. Lee says that while therapy dogs are not permitted in intensive care or maternity wards, they are welcome in the PCU (progressive care unit) and CCU (cancer care unit). “The CCU is special,” Lee says. “Patients are there for infusion, which could vary from one to six hours; having a visit from a friendly TDI team is always welcome.” I remember accompanying my late husband for his infusions and yes, I can see how a therapy dog would contribute to that situation. So I can understand Lee’s reply when I asked her how she got involved with therapy dog work? “I hesitate answering this question, but the reality is I lost Bob, my husband of 23plus years last October. He had been a patient and I thought this would be a way of giving back. The staff was so good to us, and can you imagine, what it is like now, for so many of them, to drop to their knees and hug Brandy, doctors to housekeeping? Want to get involved? Lee suggests that dog owners get Basic Training to the CGC level whether they intend to do therapy or simply walk in the park. “Then go to a nursing home and see if your dog would enjoy and be comfortable with being a Therapy dog. If so, go to either website and find what is available in your area.” For more information, check out Therapy Dogs International at http://www.tdi-dog.org/Default. aspx or Therapy Dogs Inc. at https://www. therapydogs.com/Public/Home.aspx. Then you and your dog can bring a little joy to someone who really needs it. I’ll see you there.

Island Moon – Why are they being dumped on The Island?
Don’t shop hungry
I believe the word is out that we Islanders will go out of our way to help animals who are abandoned. What some of them might not take into consideration is that some of these dogs will not allow anyone to save them. A dog that we dubbed Foxy Girl is an example...she was abandoned on the Island last winter and literally dozens of people tried unsuccessfully to save her. Sadly, she eventually met her demise on Park Road 22 right in front of Best Western where she was hit and killed.
The next step involves food. NEVER try to shop with kids who are starving. You may end up in jail after throttling a child by the neck in public – and as you sit in the jail cell wondering what went wrong, you realize the entire debacle could have been avoided had you only taken the time to feed your offspring. My kids and I start with a nice filling lunch – and I know I’m set for a few hours of shopping. Two or three hours into the trip, I offer ice cream or some sort of treat to make sure they are running on all engines. The trip lasts longer this way, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to knock it out in one day!

With our family tradition of beginning with lunch, we also start off in the right mood by trading stories of shopping trips past. My favorite – the one I will NEVER forget – involved me with the three kids shopping in Academy, looking for school uniforms. The oldest was 7 at the time, with a 5 year and 3 year old sibling. At those ages, shopping was a little more of a challenge as you can imagine! As I browsed the shelves of uniform pants, and tried to keep my eye on two young boys, my 3 year old daughter decided it was time to test gravity. When I wasn’t looking, she dove – head first – out of the shopping cart she was supposed to be sitting in. She was okay upon inspection, and I managed to wrangle up the boys to come near me so I could figure out my next move. I clearly remember two moms who were in the general vicinity, having witnessed my daughter’s fall to the floor, shooting daggers my way with their stink faces and judging looks. “What?! Haven’t you ever seen a kid fall out of a shopping cart before?!” is what I wanted to say to them, but I kept my cool and exited the store.

Frankly, all of the above. In order for Guardians Rescue (or any foster-based rescue) to save an animal, we must: First, have a foster home for them.
($20/month or $4/session) Table Tennis & Table Games-12 PM Wednesday
Second, we must have (or be able to raise) funds for necessary vetting. Normal vetting for our rescue is providing all rounds of vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter and rabies shot. Of course we rescue many who require quite a bit more vet care.

(2nd & 4th Wednesdays) Thursday Zumba Gold (Co-Ed) 10:30 AM
Keep your cool And that brings me to my final step – keep your cool throughout the day, because you will need it! You never know what or who you may encounter. Be ready for the kids to ask “Are we done yet?” at least a handful of times. You may be waiting in long lines, and as you make your way to the cashier with 10+ items, you find out the tags are missing from the jean jacket vest your daughter just had to have. Everyone and their grandmother behind you in the long line lets out a condescending sigh or mutters an insult. You simply cannot avoid the snags of shopping: rude people, crazy drivers, a frustrated cashier, crying kids everywhere – so keep your cool – and therefore, your sanity.
Island Moon - Would a kennel on the island help and could it be staffed by volunteers?
($20/month, or $4/session)
Believe me, we have gone over this in our minds many times. There are pros and cons to having a shelter. For one, every shelter in Corpus Christi has the problem of showing up to open their doors in the morning to find animals tied to their front door. Of course this is illegal, yet it continues.
Wii Bowling & Chair Volleyball - 12:30-4:45 PM Quilting 2nd Thursday of the Month Friday Silver Haired Fitness 10-11 AM
Another drawback would be the cost of obtaining a building, the necessary permitting; the huge overhead.
($8/month – Ladies Only) Table Tennis – 11 AM
Beyond the cost, we honestly believe that the foster home situation is best for the dog/cat. They are in a home environment receiving the care, love and attention that can only be found in a home. In my mind, a dog going straight from a kennel in Animal Control to a kennel in a no-kill shelter doesn’t necessarily know the difference...it’s still a kennel, it’s still a noisy and confusing place for an animal. It does nothing for their socialization, house training, etc. which are necessary to make them adoptable.

Island Moon - What can Islanders and/or the city do to help? Islanders can help by keeping this number saved in their phones - Lost Pet Hotline (361) 882-7387 and calling with pertinent information any time a pet is found. If at all possible, the animal can be taken to the vet to be scanned for a microchip. Also, take a picture and post to the Island Moon Facebook page. If unable to provide a temporary home for them, please at least provide water. I always have food/water/bowls in my car, as do all of my friends.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs reminds shoppers the annual sales tax holiday is scheduled for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8 -10.
Most Islanders have their pets spayed/neutered. If you don’t, I would urge that you do so. The likelihood of certain cancers goes to practically nil after sterilization. Corpus’ pet overpopulation problem will never end until spay/neuter becomes the ‘new normal’.
Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax free can be found on the Comptroller’s website at www. TexasTaxHoliday.org. This year, shoppers will save an estimated $82.7 million in state and local sales taxes during the Sales Tax Holiday. The tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.

Islanders can also help by keeping collars/tags on their dogs. Many people are now leery of picking up a dog because they are afraid there are not owners and they will be stuck having to find a home for them. If your pet has their collar/tags on, I can guarantee that people will go out of their way to try to catch them and reunite them with their family. It seems a no-brainer, but many people forget to get new tags for their dog when they change their address or phone number. Also, if microchipped, don’t forget to update the information with the microchip company.

Going shopping for the new school year is like the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. At every turn, something could go wrong. But no matter what, if you head into the adventure by taking some proactive steps, I have found that you can actually make it a pleasurable experience. I certainly enjoy this time with my kids, squeezing everything I can out of the last dog days of summer. And even if they might not admit it, the kids probably are enjoying the adventure, too.

STATE The Texas Border: What’s the Status?
By Todd Hunter, District 32
Over the past few weeks, I have written about state agencies undergoing the sunset review process. In light of recent developments, I will change topics this week to look at the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is tasked by the Texas Legislature to protect and serve the people of Texas. There has been a lot of discussion recently in the news regarding the state of our Texas border. Recently, the Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker came together and asked that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) act to immediately begin a law enforcement surge of operations on the Texas-Mexico border. DPS is now heavily involved with the border situation. This is an effort to try and deal with the lack of adequate federal resources to secure the border. Currently, state leaders have authorized DPS $1.3 million per week for border security operations. This plan is set to be carried out until at least the end of the calendar year. In this week’s article, I will review the ways in which the DPS is helping to try resolve the problems that this crisis has manifested. The Texas Department of Public Safety has specified that their foremost goal is to “secure the border from transnational crime between the ports of entry.” The current situation on the border has given cartels and other criminal organizations the opportunity to increase drug and human trafficking into Texas and the United States. As the state level of law enforcement, DPS is working with both federal and local law enforcement groups to combat this criminal activity. The DPS pursues their goals by ongoing “saturation” patrols along the Texas/Mexico border. By detecting and intercepting criminal entries along the border, DPS efforts will prevent higher instances of human trafficking, home invasions, felony pursuits, stolen vehicles, and other serious crimes in Texas. The Department of Public Safety is pursuing a variety of strategies to combat transnational crime on the border – in the air, water, and on the ground. Aerial patrols have increased to identify
criminal activity, as well as reconnaissance support for ground operations. As for water, one tool is the Davis-class 34-foot-long shallow water interceptor boat, which monitors the Rio Grande as well as the Intracoastal Waterways. The interceptors are equipped with ballistic shielding, automatic weapons, and three 300-horsepower engines. On the ground, DPS has increased the establishment of observational posts and Ranger Recon Teams, as well as the deployment of Trooper Strike Teams (TST). We will keep everyone posted on the developments. If you are interested in learning more about the Department of Public Safety, you can go to their website at http://www.dps. texas.gov. Another topic I will be addressing in the near future is the issue of human trafficking. Recently, a hearing was held in La Joya, Texas by the Joint Committee to Study Human Trafficking. The Joint Committee is studying ways that Texas can help stop and handle this matter. We will soon be providing you other resources so you can keep up with this issue. Some of the other agencies we will review in the upcoming weeks include the Texas Education Agency, Texas Facilities Commission, Texas Workforce Commission, as well as a number of other agencies. If you would like to learn more on your own about the Sunset Advisory Commission or other agencies undergoing the sunset review process, you can go to www. sunset.state.tx.us . If you have any questions regarding the Department of Public Safety or the current situation on the border, please don’t hesitate to contact either my Capitol or District office. My offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-9494603).

Windstorm Update Chambers representing Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Galveston, LaMarque, Port Aransas, Port Arthur and Texas City came together in Corpus Christi to address sustainable funding for Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Local city and county governments joined the group led and hosted by Foster Edwards, CEO/ President of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce. “TWIA is in a better position than any year since Hurricane Ike,” said Georgia Neblett, Texas Windstorm Insurance Association Chair. “However, a sustainable funding solution with reasonable rates is desperately needed to support Texas for the biggest storms and over multiple years.” State Representative Todd Hunter urged the coastal states to unify to protect the large portion of the Texas economy that coastal counties represent,” said Hunter. “The Texas windstorm insurance process is broken and needs to be fixed. I will seek legislation to make the process fair, transparent and predictable.” “Coastal counties have seven percent of the population but feed all areas of the state
with raw materials, equipment and energy for manufacturing products and providing services. They are also the outlet for the state in distributing its products for sale and deploy its military,” said Jim Rich, Beaumont Chamber of Commerce. “We need a sustainable funding program to protect the economy and assets of the state.” Rich’s position was echoed by the other participants including Jimmy Hayley of Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the coast is 40 percent of the Texas economy with seven percent of the population. The group is working on legislative funding mechanisms that would moderate the risks and provide incentives for the insurance industry to sell more wind insurance in the competitive market and distribute risks like all other types of insurance. “We are seeking legislation that results in less government, provides fair rates for the consumer and supports the free market.” said Representative Hunter.

SUGAR IS WAITING FOR HER FOREVER FAMILY!! A 1 year old Chihuahua mix was pulled from Gulf Coast Humane Society and is now in a foster home. She still has some trust issues but has blossomed and loves sharing a home with other dogs and cats. Sugar has learned to accept love, being petted and held but is still a little shy and would do best in a quiet home. Just needs a little reassurance Sugar is a sweetie and deserves a loving home of her own!! Spayed, up to date on shots and microchipped. Her adoption fee is waived. Submit an adoption application at http://ccpaac.org/adoption-application. Once approved, potential adopters will be able to schedule a visit with Sugar.

pure magic. Jef Wilson told me later that he thinks a new band may have been formed that night. You should have been there. Though none of these players had played together before, it sounded like a well honed unit.

Review: Ty Dietz & Tony Seracene Everything’s gone crazy…
Miss Neesie & the Earfood Orchestra…
The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Friday
This Kingfish jumped right on the ferry and under Tracey Henderson Gutierrez’ truck in Port A. Ok… what’s going on here lately? Some guy just caught a big swordfish while surf-fishing right on the beach in Port A and another guy caught an 900 pound Tiger Shark just 5 miles off shore. Then, a decent size Kingfish jumped out of the ocean and right into a ferry boat and under my friend, Tracey Henderson Gutierrez’, truck. I don’t know much about fish and even less about fishing, but that’s a lot of fish stories right there. There was a brief reprieve from the seaweed massacre last week and the city finally cleaned up a bunch of those big mountains of the nasty stuff so my gal and I actually went into the water… well I did anyway. She stayed on the beach and complained about the smell. The water still had a little seaweed floating around but it was almost tolerable. All and all, this has been one screwy summer. Thank God for swimming pools. I can live without seaweed and 900 pound sharks.
The mystery continues…
The building previously known as the Tarpon Ice House is undergoing some recent remodeling Speaking of not knowing what’s going on, if you’ve driven down Roberts Street between Alister and Oleander, you may have noticed that the back of the defunct Tarpon Ice House is now a big pile of rubble. Nobody I’ve talked to, including ex-owner Paul Fain, has a clue about what’s going on over there. I’ve been by there a half dozen times trying to connect with someone, but so far I’ve only talked to the guys doing the demolition and they haven’t been exactly forthcoming. Its hearsay, but one person I talked to said they were going to name the new place Treasure Island…the mystery continues.
confederate crooner, Bubba Westly (Houston, TX), my favorite string band, the Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) and everyone’s favorite blues belter, Shelley King (Austin, TX) at Shorty’s and Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays (Corpus Christi, TX) plus a song swap by Melissa Brooke, Bo Brumble and Mike Stites at Giggity’s. Shelley was definitely the standout this weekend… she always is. She’ll be back at Giggity’s with her full band on August 23rd. Also, whoever that gal is that sings for the Deadbeats… Lordy, Lordy that woman has chops. That’s a good band. Too bad they only show up once a year.
Giggity’s Open Jam drew Chris Jordan, Jef Wilson, Cowboy Ben Lee, Rusty Hicks and Tommy Spurlock last week Monday’s jam was off the chart… And then on Monday, I spent the whole evening at Giggity’s for their weekly Open Jam. The jam this week was hosted by the super talented Jef “With One F” Wilson and it was a goodern! We have some new talent in town in the form of Tommy Spurlock. Spurlock is a legendary pedal steel player and a highly sought after sessions player in Nashville. His credits sheet is a virtual musician’s who’s who: George Jones, Rodney Crowell, Robert Earl Keen, Highway 101, Jim Lauderdale, David Olney, Chip Taylor, Delbert McClinton, Emmy Lou Harris, John Arthur Martinez, Suzy Boguss, The Band, Roseann Cash, etc, etc. Spurlock has been playing Saturday nights at the new Phoenix Restaurant with some of his friends such as Greg Harris (Flying Burrito Brothers) and Teddy Jack (Leon Russell). His presence at the Giggity’s jam absolutely set the bar higher. Another nice addition to Port A is “Cowboy” Ben Lee who I don’t know much about, but brother that cat can make a guitar get up and walk. Together with the rest of the musicians that showed up: Deb Dault, Preecher Williams, Rusty Hicks, Chris Jordan and Jack Gant, the music created that night was
A busy week of music… Looking back over all the pictures I took last weekend, it appears that I was very busy. I caught shows by the band of lawyers, The Deadbeats (Corpus Christi, TX) and Scarecrow People (Corpus Christi, TX) at the Back Porch,

the Tex-Mex sounds of the Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) this Saturday night. This band, led on accordion and vocals, by the spirited David Perez is like a cross between the Texas Tornados and Speedy Gonzales. They flow from country to polkas to ballads at a super danceable pace.

Tony Saracene and Ty Dietz played Giggity’s last Tuesday
My dear pals from S.A., the big eight piece party band, Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra will make their yearly sabbatical to the Back Porch this Saturday. Its monkey time on the island once again. This is a journey they’ve been making for over 20 years when they would play the storied Tortuga Flats. And band leader, Jim Beal, Jr., tells me they have a special guest in tow this time. San Antonio’s rocker, David Rodriquez (formerly of the Westside meets garage rock band, True Believers), will join the mix. Rodriquez and several members of Earfood had joined forces to create the Barrio Blasters and evidently, this union rocks. The Earfood gang is one guaranteed sweaty good time, not to mention a conga line in the making.
And then when Tiffany Tuesday rolled around, I thought I’d take it easy and just run in to Giggity’s long enough to see what frolic she had planned for this weeks guests Ty Dietz and Tony Saracene… a watermelon eating contest. OK, you really don’t see that every day. But I was hooked and decided to stick around and listen to Tony and Ty for a while. I’m glad I did. These boys are bonified. It’s a smoky bar room slide and slice that’s all their own. Tony Saracene plays a deep southern lead guitar somewhere between Greenville and Swinney Switch. Ty’s songs are the kind Tony Joe White Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra would be proud of. I’m no critic, but the Back Porch this Saturday if I was, I’d say these guys are the real deal… the really real deal.

David Perez and the Tejas Brothers will play the Black Marlin this Saturday.
The City of Port Aransas will host another installment of their summer music series, Sunset Sounds, at Roberts Point Park this Friday. Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays will serve up the honors. This family friendly event is “all Port A” so bring your lawn chairs and ice chests, pack up the kids and dogs and kick back to some great rockin’ folk music. Ruben is the perfect act for this setting. Also on Friday, Chris Garza and Red Giant will play Giggity’s, John Cortez will play Shorty’s and the big 10 piece party band, Cruise Control, will play the Porch. On Saturday, the super melodic Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) will play Shorty’s and the 2000’s rock band, 90 Proof, will play Giggity’s, plus rockabilly monsters, Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang, will play the Executive Surf Club.
