Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Austin Heat…
It was another great week of live music in Port A. Austin Heat (Austin, TX) played two nights this weekend, Friday at the Back Porch and Saturday at Giggity’s. They

Landing, etc. He’ll be at the Wild Horse this Friday. I caught him at Treasure Island last weekend and the place is packed. So is every place he plays. It’s straight country… Clint Black, George Strait, Garth Brooks, etc… but James has a great baritone voice and pulls it off like a pro. He reminds me of the years I spent in the honky tonks of San Antonio. Well, good on him. It turns out Port A has a need to boot scoot. He’ll be at the Wild Horse this Friday.
played the cool music in the 70’s and 80’s. They had a nice crowd on the porch at Shorty’s and everyone stayed all night.
DO NOT MISS LIST Again, the Back Porch has got it going on. Their band on Friday, Finding Friday
Treasure Island that I’ve been wanting to see for a while, Somethin’ Silky. They play Brewster and Rockit’s in Corpus and I’m told they’re very good. Worth checking out. Another show I know will be on fire is the Michael Milligan and Texiana Bluez guys at Giggity’s. Renee drew us another great portrait in her stick figure series. Also, Ruben Limas and the Rolling J’s will play the Wild Horse,
Scattered shots…
Austin Heat tore it up last weekend in Port A absolutely slayed both nights. I am great friends with these fellows and I know how stoked they get coming to Port A, it shows in their enthusiasm. Their singer, Brian Scartocci, has only one speed… kill. He is a born entertainer. When’s the last time you saw a singer do knee drops and splits to rival James Brown. It’s no wonder he was a finalist on The Voice. His voice has a unique intonation in a high range with lots of vibrato (ala’ Aaron Neville). Plus, that’s one tight band unit backing him up. Their key’s player, Small Don Burrows, is an old bud of mine from Lubbock and used to play with Joe Ely and Doak Snead. The rhythm section, Dexter Walker on drums and Freddie Marshall on bass, are a couple of brothers from Austin that define tight, Freddie is a string popper and Dexter swings as solid as an elephant’s trunk (Keith Ferguson gave me that one. And the band leader, Austin Roach, adds great guitar riffs and harmonies that are plenty flashy but at the same time, laid back enough to make the whole unit meld as a band. Their stuff is nice and funky and it just works. Not sure if we’ll see them again this year. I know there might be something in the works for Halloween. I’ll let you know.
Elsewhere, I caught another rocking country show at the Porch on Thursday with the Chris Saucedo show. I gotta hand it to Back Porch booker Becky Hyden for consistently booking such high powered entertainment. I mean her shows this weekend were all stellar, Saucedo, Austin Heat and Gary P. Nunn. Attagirl Gary P. Nunn played Becky, I see the Back Porch on why they keep Saturday you around. I also caught a really great show at Shorty’s on Saturday with the Independent Thieves. I popped in to hear a few songs and ended up staying for an hour. Garrett The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Wieland and Saturday David King play the best folk around right now. They are both equally talented on guitar and mandolin and their voices sound like they are brothers. I love their rendition of Galway Girl. And, and the Bad Buoys show at Shorty’s on Friday was another was another pleasant surprise. Those four
James Little…
There’s another cat around here lately that’s been catching tread. James Little (Corpus Christi, TX) seems to be everywhere. I know he plays Treasure Island, Giggity’s, Shorty’s, The James Little played Wild Horse, Treasure Island last Brewster Street, Saturday Behringer’s
The Bad Buoys played Shorty’s last Friday vets: Steve Goldstein, Woodie Lawson, Ron Baker and Rusty Hicks all have the capacity to front the band. It’s fun watching them all take their turns. It’s classic rock but from the FM station that

(San Antonio, TX), are an R&B/ soul dance band with a guy they call Bird, who can wail like no tomorrow. This is a big six piece band with hot chick back-up singers. This is the show to catch. Also on Friday, the sexy Edna de la Garza will bring her band of Lyrical Byngers to Giggity’s. That’s always a hot show. I told you James Little is at the Wild Horse on Friday. Plus John Boyd of Passing Strangers will bring his most excellent solo show to Treasure Island, powerhouse blues-rocker John Cortez will play Shorty’s and the “Rasta Cowboy” Bill Snipes will play our local pirate bar, The Gaff. On Saturday, Americana stud Mark McKinney will play the Porch. I’m sure they’ll sell out for that one. Also on Saturday, there’s a band playing
Michael Milligan will play Giggity’s this Saturday Coach Jim Dugan will be at the Gaff and a guy we’ve only seen once a couple of months ago and really impressed us, John Egan (Houston, TX) will play Shorty’s. Egan is the real deal. He plays a bottleneck slide country blues deal ala’ Lightning Hopkins or Mance Lipscomb. He’s really good. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there. ♫ ♪ And, that’s the truth ♫ ♪
