The Travelling Moon

Mark Middleton celebrated his 60th birthday last weekend by dancing with his wife Libby to the sounds of Statesboro Revue, fronted by his son.

Fred & Diane King took the Moon to see ORB win the 139th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Kentucky.

Islander Heidi Wilson (left) has been visiting Greece recently and took the Island Moon along.

Seems the Island Moon made numerous appearances at my housewarming party here on the Island this weekend! Guests took editions on their travel back to Denton, San Antonio, “in town”, and Austin...Yvonne Brooks Sheri Henneberger from Port Aransas took the Island Moon to Costa Rica.

SMA 8th Graders Take Year-End Trip

Johnny Ds •

By Brent Rourk Another year has quickly passed and the 8th grade class at Seashore Middle Academy celebrated by taking a two day trip to San Antonio last week. Among the places that they visited were the Natural Bridge Caverns (mastering the Canopy Challenge), the Main Event (an indoor amusement center), the Magic Time Machine (for dinner) and SeaWorld. This marks the 6th year that the 8th grade class has ended their years at SMA by taking a trip somewhere in Texas.

SMA Soccer Season Ended

It’s Time to Name the Poison…

Barry

By Brent Rourk The Seashore Middle Academy Soccer season came to a conclusion on May 15th when both the girls’ and boys’ team played their last games Ashlynn Carnley saves at the ICW fields. another goal Photo by The SMA teams Debbie Noble are comprised of both experienced club players as well as newcomers, so many new athletes learned a lot about soccer and the veterans were able to demonstrate leadership and to mentor new players. SMA Coach Aaron Cardon established a fine practice and conditioning regimen that helped the team become competitive. Cardon added, “What a great season! It was my pleasure to coach such a great bunch of kids. Our players worked hard and made a tremendous improvement. I’m so proud of them!”

Wendy

SMA players enjoyed the year too and it was very evident that every player improved their understanding of the game as well as their individual skills. Players seemed to bond and solidify as a team as the season progressed.

Overheard on The Island… “Is that a real dip net or a tourist dip net?” “I was trying to pull into that parking spot!” “Well, you were not doing a very good job of it lady.” “The further south you go on The Island the shorter the palm trees get.” “Well, he’s got a boat now; but he still ain’t got no sense.” “Wherever you go…there you are.” Red Light District Regular readers of these pages know that since late last year I have been in an ongoing battle of wits with the operators of our city’s red light cameras – and yes, it is possible that both sides are unarmed. Last October I was tooling along Ocean Drive – under the speed limit - in my beater truck when the light at Airline went from greentoyellowtoredjustlikethat. By the time I found the brake pedal I was through the intersection and had my picture taken by a red light camera and soon enough got a notice in the mail telling me where to send my $75. Instead I appealed and paid a $50 appeal bond. I had to have my appeal - complete with notarized signature to assure them it was me - filed within 30 days, which I did. The municipal courts then had thirty days, according to their own rules written on the paperwork they gave me, to schedule my hearing. This was after a total of six trips back and forth downtown to finally get everything in order and after being informed that no one had ever appealed one of these before. The whole process stuck in my craw because of the smugness of the dude at the first “hearing” which consisted solely of him pointing at the photo and saying, “Is that your car?” “Well, I’m not admitting anything,” I said. “Where did you get that picture? ”What do you mean,” he asked, “Of course we got it from Redflex.” That is the company which owns and operates the cameras. “So the chain of evidence runs straight through the company that has a stake in me being guilty?

Justice delayed I heard nothing from the municipal courts until late April; five months after they had thirty days to set my hearing and coincidently two weeks after my last column in these pages noting that I had not heard from them. I didn’t go. I have written them informing them I want my $50 appeal bond back because they violated their own rules. I haven’t received their check yet. There are a few things you should know if you get one of these tickets. First, don’t pay it. Ignore it because it doesn’t go on your driving record and no warrant will be issued. You know why? Because they know that if they try either of those things people will start appealing them and they will lose. Why? First of all the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Melendez-Diaz vs. the State of Massachusetts that the Confrontational Clause in the Constitution attaches to red light camera cases and you have the right to question in court the technicians who maintain the cameras and the city employees responsible for setting the amount of time the light stays yellow. More on that later. Second, the courts have also found that because the fines levied for running a red light caught by on camera are for a different amount that fines for the same offense when the ticket is written

by an officer; which is the case in our city. That creates unequal justice under the law and is unconstitutional. There are numerous other legal issues as well.

A matter of timing Now back to the timing of the lights; and this is where it gets disturbing. Television station WTSP in Tampa, Florida, recently aired stories disclosing that the Florida Department of Transportation quietly changed the state’s policy on yellow intervals in 2011, reducing the minimum yellow-time below federal recommendations. The rule change was followed by engineers, both from FDOT and local municipalities, collaborating to shorten the length of yellow lights at key intersections, specifically those with red light cameras. Money talks. The yellow light times were reduced by mere fractions of a second but research showed that a half-second reduction in the interval can double the number of red light camera citations — and of course the revenue they generate. The shorter yellow-light times was blamed for at least one recent traffic death there. Another study in New Jersey found that the installation of traffic light cameras resulted in increased accidents at those intersections; including a 20-percent rise in rear-end collisions. In New Jersey the “crash severity cost,” which calculates the cost of property and vehicle damage, as well as medical care for the crash victims and the expense to the municipality of emergency response, increased by about $1.2 million after the cameras were installed. Here in Texas the state also takes a split but the City of Corpus Christi gets about $300,000 from this Unannounced Road Tax every year for which they are willing to trade higher accident counts. There are several U.S. Dept. of Transportation documents which provide guidance to municipalities on how to install and operate intersections with cameras. A USDOT/ Federal Highway Administration report found that cities should not use a speed limit in the yellow interval equation because it results “in more red light violations and higher crash rates.”

Here in town… According to the numbers presented to the Corpus City Council the number of accidents rose at the dozen or so intersections in our city after the cameras were installed. What we don’t know, and have had trouble finding out, is how the lights in our city are timed at intersections with cameras; is there a state minimum on yellow-light time? Does our city follow any of state or federal guidlines? Who times the yellow lights? How long do they stay yellow? Is it of a shorter duration at intersections with cameras? How does the system operate? Asking these questions at city hall and the police department has gotten me nowhere. There are two other ways that I know of to find out: First, ask candidates in the next city election. If you don’t like the answer don’t vote for them. Chances are they won’t have any answers because no one running for City Council is going to want to acknowledge support for the red light camera contract or find $300,000 to cut out of the budget if it is discontinued. Don’t ask don’t tell. Second, and this one is more likely to work and the course I intend to pursue, run a red light with a camera on it – when no one is coming or course – and appeal the ticket. Put The Man on the stand under oath and get him on record. Tax revenue streams are hard to kill once governments get addicted to them and our city has already ingested the Cool Aid. There are like the back- country moonshiners; they like the money and don’t mind the smell. The best way to get rid of a bad law is to make them enforce it. Stay tuned.

Farah’s Fishing Adventures This weekend the first wave of summer vacationers will flood downstream and fill our Coastal home. For some people of the Coast, the rise in population comes as an inconvenience. We must see it as a blessing and cultural event that has been played out for thousands of years along the coastal shorelines of the Coastal Bend.

The seafood harvest was essential for their survival and smoked and dried fish would feed them through the winter. Small mussels, shellfish, crabs, shrimp, and fish were easily at hand and feet, making for easy living. Our Island was a great highway, an easy path North and South that could be walked much easier than the scorching South Texas Plains.

Larry Running Turtle Today I ran into an old friend I once shared a campfire with, and spoke with him about a very special local place rich in Native American History that has been a gathering place of peoples, cultures, religions, and souls. As we talked, Larry Running Turtle Salazar talked about how so many tribes made long journeys to come here to fish, trade, and harvest from the surrounding area. People from the mountainous Hill Country and West Texas would bring down precious flint rock, minerals, and animal riches to trade for fish, they would feast on the wild fruits of Pear Cactus, as they traveled through on their way to Mexico for medicines and spiritual herbs and plants. The draw of the ocean is overpowering in many ways. The cool coastal breezes made for good travels, less bugs, and a meeting place of tribes.

Joey IV hanging loose in the port a ice cream shop. beads and soft plastics to attract attention. Top water plugs have been better than normal for large trout because of their increased use of sound to find their food. The Intracoastal Canal has had some better water exchange and with an incoming tide it cleaned up within a few miles of the bridge. Lots of shrimp in the area has pushed game fish to feed during minor and major lunar times under the cover of nighttime. Peaks in the mid-morning time period have been when we are catching most of our fish. Long rides south past Baffin Bay have given us some great fishing success and consistent quality with some real trophy class fish, but the numbers are down on an average.

Hardheads and Gafftops One thing is for sure and that is THE HARDHEADS AND GAFFTOP ARE SCHOOLING UP! They have taken over much of the Upper Lagoon and Corpus Bay. For anyone looking to entertain family or friends don’t be a snob, if you are not catching anything, put them on some gafftop. These catfish are very slimy and have long whiskers, but are much better eating than the hardheads.

JFK continued from A1 Garrett Construction of Ingleside will do the work on land owned by the Texas General Land Office. The project consists of grading, subgrade preparation, paving an area of approximately 1500 square yards, utility improvements, fire protection, signage and ADA Improvements. The project was first proposed by members of the Coastal Conservation Association of Texas (CCA) in 2000. When that organization, which collects money to fund projects around Texas, declined to provide funding local contributors to the CCA broke away and formed the Saltwater Fisheries Enhancement (SEA) with the intent of earmarking money raised locally for local projects. SEA was instrumental in the design and funding of the current project. Also on Tuesday the council took steps to begin assessing the $88 million in bond projects approved by voters in 2012. Included in that package is $1.3 million for improvements on the west side of the JFK Causeway, adjacent to Doc’s Restaurant and Snoopy’s Pier. No firm schedule has been announced for that project.

Fish the gas wells of Corpus Christi Bay, the naval base, the big island of Shamrock Cove, and the drop-offs along the back of Mustang Island. Dead or live shrimp, cut bait, squid, just about anything will work for them.

Windy snapper season A magic moment Larry brought up one thing that broke tears in my eyes and stayed with me all day. He said that the Native Americans believed that the moment when the Sun Crests the horizon was a magical time when spirits and souls from the past as well as the spirit of the earth met ours for a brief moment. Here along the Sea one can see it at that second, not in the hills and mountains, or covered in forest, but along the water of the Ocean. Many travelers didn’t make it back to their homelands, but stayed here, because of health or other reasons they remained here until they went back to the earth. Many Souls lay to rest here in our home, traveled far and wide to ride the Coastal Winds and bathe in the tides. I’ve been all over our continent and have seen the sun rise and fall over some beautiful landscapes. Here in our back yard I believe we have the best. Perhaps it is because of so many souls cresting the skyline as the first and last rays of sun light our lives each day. Open your hearts and home town to the summer crowds and see how many blessings they bring with them, directly and indirectly. That magical moment when the sun rises over the dunes as I make my way into the Laguna Madre’ has cleansed my soul and helped me through the hardest times of my life and has shown me the greatest blessings I have. Take a moment this week and watch for those first rays of light and I promise you will feel the GREAT SPIRIT inside of you.

Port A Escape The first of June is usually on fire with fantastic fishing but the recent BROWN TIDE outbreak has pulled a cloche over fishing in our area. THE BROWN TIDE DOES NOT KILL FISH, but it does make it difficult to catch them. We went on a small vacation last week to find some green water; we went to Port Aransas by boat and had a blast. As we got to the backside of Mustang Island the water cleared up and Shamrock Cove looked nice. Pulling up to Port A made us feel like WE were on vacation! We docked the boat and took a walk. Our first stop was Port A Outfitters, great store. Tom and Mary have been there for a long time and their store is awsome! Offshore and inshore tackle, specialty stuff you can’t find at big sporting goods stores. Their prices are not marked up and you get quality knowledge and help with every purchase.

One good way to prepare them is to fillet them, you will notice one white side and the other marbled red. Take a fish scale and rough up the marbled side and spray it with a strong hose. This will clean out the meat and have it ready to fry or bake. Snapper season opens just as our spring winds are a little late and are blowing hard. There is no window of light winds and calm seas for smaller boats to venture out

Lots of quality down south with an average trout being twenty inches this week. offshore for the snapper and the season only lasts for less than a dozen days. Thanks, Feds. When conditions are poor I concentrate on celebrating every victory on the water. Enjoying the entire trip and keep up everyone’s spirits. Take a few moments to explore islands or climb a sand dune along the National Seashore. The opportunity to be on the water is enough in itself to lighten our spirits and open our souls. Take a minute to watch the sun rise and take in the spirit of the earth and sea, as we welcome back our Summer Visitors. How do you spend your Saturday Morning?

They had the most beautiful reel display and hundreds of styles of Costa Del Mar sunglasses. We strolled over to The Board House surf shop and saw people renting the big Golf Carts with jam’n stereos. We ate ice cream and homemade peach pie across the street, and walked in to the wonderful smells of the deli full of breakfast things and hot sandwiches. If you need to break out and relax head over to the other end of the Island for a day. You might find some clean water and escape for a few hours. Sometimes it is nice to “hide out” where no one knows you.

Fishing the Brown Tide If you are going to fish close bye in the brown tide remember to use noise and vibration to your advantage. Popping corks with live shrimp and GULPS have been catching fish along the King Ranch Shoreline but use brightly colored

We left the Lagoon with nothing but a prayer and landed on a full box of trout from Corpus Bay along the bay front downtown.

Letters to Riley P. Dog Congratulations on your weight loss, I’ve seen you around the island and you are lookin’ good. I can relate to your feelings of being punished cause something similar has happened to me.

people when I lived in a big city but then my humans made me go downtown and sit still while a lot of people walked past. After a while I got used to it – except for people on motorcycles; they still confuse me and I chase them. I don’t know why. Other than that I’m mostly a Canine Good Citizen.

By the way, what is a hot dog? I am a dog and I get hot sometimes but nobody has tried

My diet is going real good. Last week Dr. Christi weighted me and I’ve lost eight pounds.

tabled pending the outcome of a lawsuit against the City of Austin aimed at overturning a similar ban in that city, would give retails the option of a 10-cent fee per plastic bag at the checkout counter, or a $1.00 per transaction involving plastic checkout bags and/or single use garment bags per transaction. All revenue from the fees would be earmarked for cleaning plastic bag litter and enforcement of the ban. City staff estimates that the fee would generate $542,000 in the first five months of fiscal year 2013-2014. Fines for violation of the proposed ordinance would include $100 for the first violation in a calendar year; $200 for the second violation in the same calendar year; or (C) $500 for each additional violation in the same calendar year; with no more than one citation to be issued to a business within a 7-day period. Violations would be a class C misdemeanor. Last year the council approved a one-year voluntary program to attempt to cut down on the use of the one-use bags, however, it has produced little in the way of results. “When it comes to plastic bags education doesn’t work,” Martinez said. She told the council she would bring the local ordinance up for a vote “if the court in Austin rules in favor of the city’s ban on the bags.” City Attorney Carlos Valdez estimated the resolution of the Austin case will take a minimum of “a year and a-half” which prompted Councilman Mark Scott to say he believed it was “unfortunate the ordinance was being pulled’ from the agenda. Councilman David Loeb also expressed disappointment that a vote was not taken on Tuesday on the ban ordinance. “By the time the appeals on that case are done is could be five or six years down the road,” he said. “I don’t think we should do nothing in the meantime.”

to eat me. My mom gives me these tiny little snacks that taste like regular dog food called Milk Bones; sounds like something a cat would like, huh? Anyway, my human adopted me from a puppy mill about 3 years ago and it has been heaven here on the island, I love being spoiled with a view. I don’t even have to eat my poop anymore cause it’s always promptly picked up. I used to get away with bad behavior because I’m cute until Dr. Kresser told my mom about the Obedience Club of Corpus Christi (OCCC). Boy, I didn’t see that coming. For the last eight weeks, my mom has taken me to school once a week and we do homework almost every day. The upside to this story is that I get a new treat now when I practice, it’s called cheese and it is yummy. Do you like cheese? I just graduated from the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) class and now we are going to go back for more classes like rally, obedience, agility and more cheese I hope. In class we learned to be nice to other dogs and people, how to sit, stay, down, come and heel. I think all dogs should go to this school to be good citizens and play nice. So, until we have our island dog park to romp and play in, I’ll see you around the island. HaVana Dear HaVana, I never went to obedience school. I used to chase people, especially kids and homeless

Eight pounds! That’s like a thousand pounds in Dog Pounds. Dr. Christi gave me some Science Diet Metabolic Weight Loss. I’m not sure what Metabolic Weight is but I guess I lost eight pounds of it. It didn’t hurt that this week my humans stayed home instead of going out where I could work the tourists for food; begging food from locals is hard. I think they might have a shortage and won’t share. I’m sorry HaVanna but if you have never had a hotdog I can’t explain it to you. It’s not the same as a hot-dog. When I’m hot I jump in the pool but now I got Dog Banned from the pool because there was some hair in there. I think if the people who put up that No Dogs in the Pool sign knew what some of those kids are doing in there they would put up a No Kids in the Pool sign too. I’m just saying… Oh boy, I don’t know what that Bit-O-Honey is but it sure sounds good. Can you send me some Auggie Doggie? Where is Iowa? Is that north of Swinny Switch? It sounds like it, especially if you got snow there. And what is “May?” I know a nice lady named May but I don’t think she snows. Maybe when you get back to The Island Auggie Doggie, you and me and HaVana can go to the beach, or maybe we’ll have a dog park by then. I sure hope so. In the meantime, bury your bones where you can find them.

He also said that since some businesses oppose the ban because of the cost of enforcing it that an outright ban on the plastic bags might be a better solution.

The Texas Retailers Association is suing the city of Austin over its disposable bag ban set to take effect Friday, saying the ban violates state law and should be tossed out. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Travis County district court, says the ban violates part of the state’s health and safety code that prevents local governments from banning or restricting “for solid waste management purposes, the sale or use of a container or package in a manner not authorized by state law.” The retailers’ group said it “has not been able to discover a single state law authorizing the banning of bags in any manner, let alone the manner adopted by the city,” the lawsuit says. The Austin City Council passed the ban last March, but said it would take effect a year later to give the city and businesses time to prepare. In 2009, the City of Brownsville passed the first major ordinance of its kind in the State of Texas charging $1 for each plastic bag issued. City officials in Brownville estimated the fee has eliminated more than 350,000 bags from the waste stream each year. The fee has raised about $300,000 annually, which when leveraged with state and federal matching grants, has raised just under $1 million per year which is used for litter control. Recycling of the bags is not possible because there are currently no recycling centers in the state who will accept them. More than 50 tons of the bags are currently being stored in various sites around Corpus Christi with nowhere for them to be shipped. Several state lawmakers in the session which ended this month tried unsuccessfully to pass bills that would have overturned the Brownsville ban on the basis that reusable bags pose serious health threats, such as E. coli, “because people do not wash them.” Opponents of the lawsuit in Austin have said they believe the state law cited in attempting to strike down the ban is aimed solely at drink cans and bottles, not bags. Mayor Martinez did not say on Tuesday when she plans to bring the item back before the council.

Flocka is a cuddler

Meet Drizzy, Breezy & Flocka! These three kittens were dumped in a box and left on a family’s door step with a note telling her to ‘have a heart and find them good homes’. Well, she found me and I am fostering them until they are ready for adoption or a foster-to-adopt home. They are beyond adorable and such sweet babies. They are just getting their little personalities and it’s such fun to watch them learn and grow. If you would like to adopt one (or more) of these precious babies, email us at adoptions@guardiansrescue.org to request an application. The adoption fee for a kitten is $50 and that includes spay/neuter and all rounds of shots. For additional photos of these babies, please ‘like’ us on Facebook - search Guardians Rescue... there you’ll find an album for Drizzy, Breezy and Flocka.

To the person who flipped me off on Dasmarinas Saturday at 7:45 pm.What did I do to make you angry? You were parked 6 feet from the curb unloading passengers near the middle of the road. I was going under the speed limit and simply went around you and veered back to the right to avoid oncoming traffic and when I looked in the mirror you were flipping me off. Why?? You are a very brave person to do such things with all the crazies out there. I am not one of those but you need to think before you do such things. Someone could have got their butt kicked in or worse. You have made it to the Island so relax and leave your anger OTB.

From the Island Moon Facebook page – theislandmoonnewspaper If the wrong size lift/pump was purchased for Whitecap Pump Station, wouldn’t it be cheaper to replace? Hundreds of man hours spent pushing the poop to the already overwhelmed water treatment plant. Somebody do something Alice Palumbo The next “good” decision this city makes will be their first!! Jerry Lawley Somebody do something! Norma Garcia Maybe it’s time for The Island to detach itself from the City of CC and incorporate into a separate town. One in which actually serves the residents of the Island, that can be managed better with the well being of our community at the forefront, and where the tax revenue generated actually stays on the Island for its streets and infrastructure.

Car Vandals Yesterday evening (Saturday) around 8 pm, my mother’s truck along with four of our neighbor’s vehicles were vandalized on the cul-de-sac of Isla Pinta. My mother’s truck had two flat tires and was keyed vertically on the passenger’s side. One neighbor’s truck had one flat tire as well as a vertical mark scratched into the side. The other three neighbors’ vehicles had flat tires and were possibly keyed too. The police department arrived in a timely manner to take reports of the vandalization. Please let us know if anyone’s vehicles were similarly damaged on the Island yesterday! Also be aware that this sort of act occurred and keep an eye out for a culprit. My mother’s tires didn’t go completely flat nor did she realize about the damage until she was on the busy highway on her way home so this was very dangerous for her. We would all like to enjoy our holiday weekend without the worries! Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be watching for odd behavior in our neighborhood too. Maybe it’s a good time to host a block party with the intent of meeting everyone and starting a neighborhood watch. Ted Morris

Jonathan Simms I’d like to think that might happen eventually, but I honestly can’t see it. The island is too much of a ‘cash cow’ for the city of CC. Ann Vanderpool is that what they are doing?!?! I went to England for two weeks and its still going on! This is ridiculous!! Teri Shuke Mcdowell Editor’s note: The crews at the site say it will take about three months to complete the work. The crews there now are getting the temporary sewer line between the pump station near the Cruiser Bridge and the Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant up and running. Once that is done crews will clean and survey the existing sewer line which runs along the south side of Whitecap to determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced. The line has been in service since the 1970s and a break at the Whitecap/Gypsy intersection last year resulted in a giant pothole that ate most of the intersection. One of the reasons for the work is to try and eliminate the foul odor which emanates form the Cruiser Pump Station on a daily basis.

Aquarius Editor, Now that another utility pole bites the dust on Aquarius Street, (this is the second pole to stop a car, not the first), you have decided that “clearly something needs to be done” about speeding traffic. This from the same person who encouraged readers to use Aquarius Street as a cut-through and “zip” around Spring Break traffic. if this represents a change in your p osition, it rings hollow and is too little, too late. When a person instead of a utility pole gets in the way of a future out-of-control speeder, it will not only be the driver who is responsible. Both our city representatives who ignored teh message from a District Court jury verdict; and the local “progress-at-any-cost’ people who refused to engage in good-faith negotiations with Barrataria Bay residents about traffic safety, will also be held accountable for the decisions they made. David Barabino

Golf Carts Moon, There are a lot of people with Golf Carts and I was wondering if any body would like to start a club. We could meet on the beach from time to time and have a Golf Cart tail gate party. It would be a great way to meet people and have some fun too. My email is van8125@gmail. com lets get together! Ray Vanderpool Editor’s note: Hey Ray. We expect you will be getting a message from (another) Ray or Bobo who are among the ringleaders of the Island Golf Cart Movement. The city ordinance allowing golf carts on Island streets – with speed limit 35 mph or under – has caught on quickly. Who knew that driving around in golf carts could be as much fun as playing golf?

Taxes Moon, There’s more to the confusing appraisal notices and values....try to have an “Over 65 exemption” and your “tax rate” frozen. We thought that meant our taxes would remain the same----not true. Even with values upward or downward, we somehow always have to pay more each year. Our tax rate was “frozen” in 2009. Our appraisals are over the 10% limit and sometimes increased over 10% on both improvement (house) and land. When the tax rate and values were lowered about two years ago, we thought we would get a lower tax bill because the taxes were lowered---not true--we paid a higher tax bill based on the 2009 tax rate. It would be nice if we could have values and taxes stay the same for at least a 5-year period, then maybe our taxes wouldn’t have to be used to pay for so many employees and for appraisal review board appointees every year for protest hearings. Diane King

Dogs

Dogs, Read Paul Slobojan’s letter this week regarding dogs running loose and couldn’t agree more. I’ve been threatened by them barking and growling only to be told it was my fault that they were not used to me. There is no reason I should have to carry mace or a taser for protection on my morning or evening walks. Next time it happens I’ll be calling Animal Control. Rick Beekman

May 30, 2013

I pointed out a few local places from when I lived in Key Largo years ago, and we made our way south. The Keys eventually open up a little around Marathon, and you get some pretty good views of gorgeous water and wide open spaces from the bridges and causeways. We made our way over the 7-mile bridge and eventually into KW to our Villa at Old Town Manor. Jeff set us up in a pretty swank place with a pool, and we immediately dove into the fun. First off was a charter boat that took us out to the drop off to troll for mahi. The great thing about KW is that the water drops off to over 1000’ feet in less than 7 miles. We have to run 85 miles out to get to that kind of water here. The azure blue water greeted us like an old friend, and we spent the day cruising around chasing birds and picking up a few fish. The next day was “Activity Day”, a term that Curtis brought back from Mexico. Activity day includes taking in the sights, doing shopping, errands, and a little bit of everything else besides fishing. We had a great many things to do and see, including the Southern most point, Hemmingway’s House, having lunch at the Cuban place across town, and a sundry of other running around. Activity day was quite a blast, and I’m still recovering from that one.

Marathon Key A simple journey, straight down the Florida coast, to a potential summer mooring. No big deal. But in the end, we didn’t quite make it.

out to the Marquesa’s in search of a goliath grouper. The water was great, and although we didn’t get into our intended catch, we did get to get out of the boat and snorkel one of the reefs. “Stingray Alley” definitely lived up to its’ name. I managed to find one good coral head and snap a few pictures of some porkfish. It was a pretty good birthday, if I do say myself. Through the entire trip, we continued to chase those finicky tarpon, but the conditions were against us. Seems that the weather over on the other side of the Gulf is a few weeks behind there too. The water temperatures were still down some, and the typical summer patterns hadn’t started yet. We’re not the only ones over here with these wonky conditions. The tarpon were hard to come by, with only 6 jumped by Mickey, myself, and Zep, and only Zep landed one. But it’s always fun to see them come out of the water. Big thanks to Jeff again, for setting the trip up and making it all happen. As you’re reading this we’re about to get the first good summer time blitz of people on the Island out at the beaches. I’m sure traffic will be backed up and the craziness will ensue starting Friday. Make sure to get plenty of supplies. I want to shout out a happy belated birthday to Scott “Bizzy”. When this wind comes down I’ll see you out On the Rocks.

The next day we got back in the boat with Capt. Jeremy and bombed around the flats and

Coconut Woman and her crew of 3-plus bucked our way through the washing machine of Government Cut with six knots of wind on the beam, and no current, the supposed all-weather channel. Like much of Miami, we have learned, everything looks professional and stylized but when you actually want something to function or just taste good, don’t expect that much. Miami is more about the cover than the book, though we did have some wonderful adventures and spent time with good friends.

Bumbles the Crab meets Bertha The sunrise cheered us on, but it was sad to risk Bumbles’ already overdue molting reemergence from his sand box. He was supposed to burrow for up to four weeks but it had been down there two months, and no Bumbles sightings. He arrived aboard shy, in poor shape, mangled, and missing his small claw, so we didn’t have high hopes. I was worried the violent thrashing of the boat would cause the sand to cave in on him or bruise him to death while waiting for his outer shell to develop. I know, I know, “It’s just a crab, Meredith,” but my maternal instincts lack proper focus. This specific sail was to be met with a series of adventures. Literally, we were chased down the coast by isolated, small, yet fast and cranky convective squalls. We decided to name each squall we encountered, but then decided on naming the lead squall of each series. We gave up on that after “Bertha and her Sorority Sisters.” When Alfonso’s little brother passed just in front of us and hit the Gulf Stream, he quickly sprouted and began throwing adolescent tantrums (and lightening bolts). Each time a squall was near, we received 20-45 minute sleigh rides off the wind, an exhilarating run; always on or behind us, with more waiting to chase us all the way to Marathon. That day alone, we opened and closed the hatches and portlights four times.

Sunning the Jackfruit The other thing that seemed to arrive in series were the flies. 1, 2, 10, 20, 35, and again, we gave up trying to count these as well. I can now say I have thoroughly honed my swatting skills. Some are faster than others and more difficult to sneak up on. Stealth side approach swipes seemed to work best, and for some reason, they were easier to smack when they were on the floor. Nina, in no uncertain terms, conveyed her annoyance at nap interruptions and her opinion that I had gone mad. When you start calling the fly swatter “your” fly swatter and smacking anything you see moving, then maybe you have been taking a bit too much ownership in the situation. But why, God, why??!!! And He said, “ Because you idiots have a jackfruit sunning itself on the cockpit floor.” Jackfruit is a spiky, pointy, green monstrosity that is larger than a watermelon and smells like Juicyfruit chewing gum on the bottom of your shoe. The flies went crazy, buzzing several miles from land to find it. What made this so amazing was the fact we were downwind from land! Least to say, Jackfruit spent the remainder of the voyage dragging around in the dinghy. During the final stretch of our journey, we had been grumbling about the lack of wind when a few cottonball clouds in the Everglades popped up. I went below, and when I emerged ten minutes later, Mr. Cute and Fluffy and blown up into a dark, grey, towering steam train. No worries though because the wind was out of the West/Southwest, and the storm was behind us to the Northeast.

I went below again and when I emerged five minutes later, the storm definitely appeared to be heading in the wrong direction. Obviously. But try reasoning with a raincloud.

Insecticide bomb As soon as the Coastguard put out the severe thunderstorm warning with 35-knot winds heading Southwest, we saw dozens of little power boats with two long antennae skitter in toward the coast for cover. It looked like a herd of white cockroaches fleeing an insecticide

bomb. The horizon behind us was strung with lightening and the wind backed to stern. We let the main out and readied the boat for the onslaught. Nina must be placed on the downwind forward corner of the settee or she gets extra moody. I might add that there was nowhere for us to take shelter, nor were we on a lee shore. We maintained our course, adjusting CW so that the wind was squarely on her starboard quarter with the main let all the way out to port. We were moving at five knots, the storm at 10, so there wasn’t much else to do but watch and wait. This storm seemed to come out of nowhere because it grew so quickly while also on the move. A line of approaching water shadows indicated the first icy cold wind blast. “Slam!” And off we flew, pushed by the storm to Marathon at a brisk eight knot clip. The “wow” factor here was the fact we didn’t even get wet! Not even drippy! It continued on past the port bow and into the ocean where we were left to enjoy a pink sunset.

Coconut Woman likes The Trades Coconut Woman was built for the tradewinds, which blow at a consistent 20-30 knots in places, so we knew she loved the ride. Our big thick sails didn’t seem to mind either. Again, I find much consolation in being able to enjoy (cautiously) sailing conditions not otherwise well-met by lighter craft and their crew. The trade-off in speed versus comfort seems fair, and I might mention the weather forecast called for light and variable winds through the Southwest, 0 precipitation. Point being that we have both been through some vicious non-forecast squalls at all times of the year, and the idea a lot of folks have about simply “not going out when the weather is bad” isn’t always going to work. Marriage saviors into Boot Key On the way into Boot Key Harbor, I happily pulled out our “Marriage Savers.” Yes, “Marriage Savers” is the real name of the product; and rightly so. The trick to the approach was to put me on the bowsprit with a high power flashlight so that I could spot the markers in the dark. We had a two mile field of boats, debris, mangrove, shoal, and markers through which to wind, and could not speak to one another from our respective positions without disturbing anchored boats, and hand signals weren’t going to cut it. Enter “Marriage Savers,” the bomber headphones and mic that let your listener hear you whisper. It also helped that we had timed ourselves for high tide and a full moon. After quietly shewing into safety drunken guy in a dinghy who somehow didn’t see our lights (“Stealth Boat,” as he called it which I took as an actual attempt to place the blame on us), we transited a particularly shallow section we would not have been able to pass at a lower tide. By the time we made our final turn into our row of slips, the wind had died to a slow breeze across our port bow. I was trying to spot the slip numbers but couldn’t find them, when suddenly I heard silence. I thought for half a second and remembered there was supposed to be the sound of an engine in the air. Then I knew it. We had just run out of diesel. So began our gradual loss of steerage as we tried to drift our way to slip B-28, which we couldn’t see anyway. We grabbed our longest lines, thanked our luck for the soft wind that was gently pushing us toward the slips instead of into mangrove shoal, and let CW choose her slip herself. There were a few frantic whisperings, scuttling about the boat, lines were thrown, pilings were lassoed, and in we went. Once we were tied up, I went to give the crabs a snack when I saw an area of caved-in sand. Someone in a yellow shell was enthusiastically strolling across the sand. Bumbles! He was sporting healed wounds and a whole new claw. So technically we didn’t make it all the way to our destination. We were four slips short!! Best Wishes from slip B-24, The Crew of Coconut Woman. PS- This one is on Monkeyman. Did I not inquire the day before and the morning we left Miami about our fuel supply? Indeed I did! The idea was to run out of diesel so Justin could clean the tank, though he did check and thought we definitely had enough. So the question is, was this a move of dumb luck or brilliance? See the title for answer.

My mind is a lot more at peace when we finally cross over Jewfish Bridge onto Key Largo back into the Conch Republic. If you’ve never been, the Keys are a long stretch of small communities that are based almost entirely on tourism. Imagine our island stretched to about 500 yards wide, 120 miles long, and consisting of towns like Aransas Pass and Port Aransas sprinkled with occasional pockets of South Padre, and you get the Keys. Only with a lot more trees and marsh vegetation scattered in there.

start. If we cannot do him honor while he’s here to hear the praise,

Dotson’s Note: With Memorial Day just passed, I couldn’t help but present to you my favorite poem, which brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. MacArthur was wrong, old soldiers don’t just fade away.

Just A Common Soldier (A Soldier Died Today) by A. Lawrence Vaincourt Old Soldiers Ranks Are Growing Thin He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past. Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one. And tho’ sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we’ll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away, And the world’s a little poorer, for a soldier died today. He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife, For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life. Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way, And the world won’t note his passing, though a soldier died today. When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,

Then at least let’s give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say, Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

Friday, May 31. The heat is on. Mercury enters Summer sign Cancer at 2:07 AM early Friday morning signaling the beginning of Summer weather—and he is three weeks early! Meanwhile Mars enters Gemini at 5:39 AM and our communications get energized while intense debates and arguments become headline material over the next six weeks. Meanwhile, the Moon trines Saturn at 5:54 AM and astrological skies are friendly Friday morning. But you may notice people changing their minds with two planets shifting into new signs. And especially when the Sun and Moon form a challenging square at 1:58 PM Friday afternoon—this is the low-energy spot in the Skywatch. But that’s the only quack in the heavens today. A clearing trend quickly follows and Luna will make a pleasant sextile to powerful Pluto an hour later. Peaceful hours continue for the rest of the day and night. As times change. LOOKING AHEAD: Green lights are up for work or play in June. The main event in the Skywatch is Saturn in Scorpio lining up in a welcome trine to Neptune in Pisces on June 11. Both planets will then back up, and continue to make this positive aspect through July 19! This trine first appeared in the heavens last December—and this can be the payoff time for work/projects started at that time. Saturn is realistic and practical. Neptune is idealistic and artistic. The trine brings a time when these forces support each other. Thus this is a stellar window of time to take music lessons, or to begin to learn a language—to start something that will take time (Saturn) and that can make a dream (Neptune) come true in your life. In ways large and small, accept opportunities to make positive changes in your life and times while this once-in-20-year trine hangs out in the heavens. Trines reward action. Scorpio and Pisces are water signs = when you are emotionally committed to a new plan your ability to succeed increases dramatically. What feels right? That’s your target.

Thursday, May 30. A day of Grace. This is a stellar day for priority calls, business and adventure. The Moon in friendly Aquarius trines lucky Jupiter at 10 AM which is bound to put most folks in a good mood. Another kiss follows as Luna trines sweet Venus at 12:21 PM. Yes, this is another good morning for sales calls, beauty treatments, buying art, electronics, cars and for getting in touch with the people who can help you. A third trine appears at 6:37 PM when the Moon trines clever Mercury. Caution lights come on at this moment as the Moon quickly makes a square to impatient Mars at 6:57 PM and then turns Void of Course until she enters dreamy Pisces at 7:30 PM. This is no big deal. Just hold off on making purchases and decisions while the Moon is V/C. Clear skies return after the Moon changes signs.

Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians

Complications. Again we have long Moon Void of Course cycles in June which turn on the caution lights for some matters, but not all. What is important is to not make final decisions or major purchases when the Moon is V/C. Especially if they are first–time events as our judgment and intuition are not sharp. Otherwise, keep your radar on when the Moon is V/C as positive people and situations are just as likely to find you as other days this month, but you might not realize it at the moment. Mercury Retrograde is another complication in the Skywatch beginning on June 26 and lasting until July 20. Again this Rx cycle is in a water sign, Cancer, and thus we’ll have to be very careful about confusing facts with feelings while trickster Mercury backs up on the bases. Big time storms are coming during this Rx cycle—pay attention to the weather reports. Good News: Generous Jupiter enters water sign Cancer on June 25 and will remain in his favorite sign until July, 2014. He spends about a year in each sign on his 11–12 year journey around your birth chart. Certainly this is very good news for Cancer, and the other water signs Scorpio and Pisces as Jupiter will conjunct or trine your Suns in his journey. This is good news for all of us, too, because everyone has a house, a part of their chart, ruled by Cancer and that’s where you can expand, be successful, and maybe get lucky with Jupiter’s blessing in the year ahead. Cancer rules your stomach— don’t ignore your gut instincts as you enter into new situations and relationships in this period of time—sometimes our feelings perceive what logic can’t. More Good News: Jupiter in Cancer will conjunct/meet Venus, Jupiter and the Sun in the birth chart of AMerica (born on the 4th of July, 1776) by mid August. I’m sure the stock market traders will be watching closely as Jupiter touches the best planets in AMerica’s chart. Astrological timing guides like this one are used by many speculators and investors in the markets—they just don’t tell you about it. Cancer also rules our home and the real estate market. Yes, this will be a very good period of time to buy/sell and to improve your home and property. JUNE KISS DAYS: 3+, 19+, 23, 27. The two + days of Grace are stellar for top priority calls, appointments and business. Add this second list to your calendar: 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 20, 26. All good days but with the Moon Void of Course suggesting you watch, look and listen carefully—and make final decisions another day. JUNE QUACK DAYS: 7+, 8, 12, 16. Mars squares Neptune and inconjuncts Saturn on the 7th suggesting a low–energy day and somewhat dangerous night as Neptune rules drugs and alcohol; Mars is the teenager who doesn’t know when to slow down—caution lights are up that night. The other three days are not difficult but better suited to routine and simple plans.
