GLO land sale The sale of 3860 acres of land in Kleberg County has bogged down in the detail stage. Kleberg County officials are now talking to possible donors to purchase the land to keep it open and free to the public. Waiting in the wings are Nueces County and the Padre Island National Seashore with the backing of the Texas Nature Conservancy. At stake is the way the land will be used and how it will be accessed for generations.

By Dale Rankin editor@islandmoon.com Our spring weather equation has come down to this; long periods of Chamber of Commerce Weather punctuated by spurts of north wind that brings cooler weather to our shores and blows our patio furniture to Port Mansfield. The latest came early Monday and brought a solid, soaking rain that filled the bar ditches and will green things up for a while. So it’s been Rolling Stones Week on our sandbar with High Tide and Green Grass and things are rolling our way folks as we ease our way through the last month of spring and slide into summer.

All we can say at this point is that those involved with the project report that outgoing Texas General Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson has said privately he wants the issue resolved before he leaves office this year. A meeting of the parties is set for next week, we will keep you posted as things develop.

Island farewell We want to wish an Island farewell to a couple of long-time Islanders Buck Buckmiller who died recently and his wife, Christie who passes away in 2008. They lived on The Island in the 1970s and 19'80s after escaping the snow of Park City, Utah and had a house at Gulf and Avenue A in Port A known to locals as the Party House before the bar by the same name opened. Christie tended bar at the Sail Club (now the Salty Dog). Buck cooked at the White Marlin and Meri's Malibu (now Neptune's and Marcel's). Christie is immortalized in a photo by Carole Jordan. Christie, Jay Meadows and friends hauled a grand piano onto the beach. While he played, Christie danced a ballet at sunset. Service will be May 31, 2 p.m., at Marker 44 on the beach. They'll scatter Buck and Christie's ashes.
Island Moon Artwalk After months of requests from Island artisans the The Island Moon ArtWalk sponsored by the Island Moon Newspaper is making a comeback. The event will be moving from the parking lot on the Michael J. Ellis Seawall to the actual seawall just north of the parking lot where Rick and Jodi Patel have agreed to let us set up on the seawall adjacent to their property. The tentative date for the first event is Saturday, June 21, appropriately the first day of summer. We are considering holding the event more than once per month, the final decision will depend on the number of vendors who wish to participate. The event is free to vendors and public alike and no pre-registration for vendors is required, however, we do reserve the right for final approval of vendors. So summer’s almost here and so is the Island Moon ArtWalk. For questions e-mail to editor@ islandmoon.com. That’s all for this week. Say hello if you see us Around The Island.
Early voting starts Monday Island vote likely to decide most hotly contested race By Dale Rankin Island voters will likely be the deciding factor in the most hotly contested race on the ballot in early voting which begins Monday. Voters on Padre Island were the key voting block in the key race for Nueces County Commissioners Precinct 4 in the Primary vote last March. That three-way race ended with neither incumbent Precinct 4 County Commissioner Joe McComb nor challenger Brent Chesney garnering the majority vote necessary to avoid a runoff. Early voting for the May 27 runoff election begins next Monday, May 19. A total of 1324 voters cast ballots on North Padre where Republican voters favored Chesney by 42%; with 26% for McComb. In Port Aransas less than 500 Republican votes were cast and McComb won with 54% and Chesney was second with 39%.

Padre Island, Texas
Present were the three supports that underpin the quickly- accelerating development picture on The Island from Port Aransas to the JFK Causeway; first were representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation outlining the transportation infrastructure from the ferry landings in Port Aransas, south along the SH 361 corridor, to the critical intersection at SH 361 and SPID/Commodores, and back along SPID to the Island’s lifeline, the JFK Causeway. Next were representatives of the relatively new and quickly expanding Palmilla Beach Resort & Golf Club located on the south end of Port Aransas on SH 361 which, along with the Cinnamon Shore planned housing development nearby, represent the burgeoning but fastgrowing high-end market segment. Finally came, developer Paul Schexnailder who is bringing the Schlitterbahn Resort and Waterpark which is the cornerstone of a 500plus acre, twenty year project, which by summer 2015 will be well underway toward redefining North Padre Island. The occasion was the first State of the Island Conference sponsored by San Jacinto Title Services and in the audience was a mix of local office holders, real estate industry representatives, politicians, and developers including Ralph Durden who is credited with, among other projects, the building of Packery Channel. What the crowd heard were plans for dozens of seemingly disparate but ultimately intertwined projects on both Mustang and Padre islands that when taken jointly paint a vivid picture of an island in the throws of a generational and transformative change.
Roads TxDot officials described how a third passing lane will be added to the SH 361 corridor, beginning with small segments which will eventually be connected to form a third reversible lane. They also outline plans for expansion of the ferry landings in Port Aransas and more space to traffic waiting to cross. A key exponent of the traffic infrastructure is the ongoing work to expand the lanes at the SH 361/ SPID intersection.

The most visible of the SEA’s recent Island projects is the new parking lot and boat ramps adjacent to the JFK Causeway _ between Billings and Clem’s ^ marinas. SEA donated $92,000 to jump start the project which was leveraged to secure $1.7 million in additional money to make the project a reality.

In the past year SEA also pushed through the development of the new 160-acre Corpus Christi Nearshore Reef in state waters located in 73 feet of water, nine miles from the mouth of Packery Channel. The organization, funded by local donations, has already seen the arrival of 2000 tons of reefing material including tons of concrete box culverts and 470 fabricated pyramids and committed $100,000 to help bring a 155’ coastal freighter to be sunk at the site. A little Island history
Once Upon A Time In the Days Before Happy Hour
If you were suddenly sent back in time 12,000 years, you would not recognize the Coastal Bend. There was forest and rolling grassland as far as you could see and the Gulf of Mexico was 200 miles away. You might recognize many plants and animals, but some would be strange and many would be dangerous. Up in Kansas, the mighty glaciers would still be holding the land in permanent winter. The milesthick ice would still be moving slowly, grinding away at what would turn into the Great Lakes. It was the end of the Pleistocene era, the ice age and the time of the megafauna or giant animals.

Letters to the Editor Traffic
Mike Ellis, Founder
Dear City Council Members, I want to bring to your attention a traffic situation that is not only dangerous but is a detriment to the success rate of events occurring in our downtown area The situation has been in existence for a long period of time and each time Paul & I go to an event, ie. at The American Bank Center, Whataburger Field or The Harbor Playhouse we sit, moan, disagree on solutions and generally get very aggravated. I am positive we are not alone.

The Island Moon is published every Thursday, Dale Rankin, Editor / Publisher. Total circulation is 10,000 copies. Distribution includes delivery to 4,000 Island homes, free distribution of 3,000 copies in over 50 Padre Island businesses and condos, as well as 600 copies distributed in Flour Bluff, 1,400 copies on Mustang Island and Port Aransas businesses. News articles, photos, display ads, classified ads, payments, etc. may be left at the Moon Office.
The Island Moon Newspaper 15201 S. Padre Island Drive, Suite 250
The situation occurs as one enters the downtown area via Crosstown blending to I 37 towards Water Street. At this point, you approach two lights, one being at the intersection of Mesquite which runs one way from Whataburger Field and then the second light that the patrons for The American Bank Center, The Harbor Playhouse and Whataburger Field have to negotiate. The lights are very poorly timed, the second light with left turn arrow allows at most five cars to safely turn before it switches off. It is not clear as to whether the second lane to the right of the left turning lane is allowed also to turn left.. Most traffic backs up entering this left turning lane, backing up significantly into the 37 corridor. It is risky at best to go to the second lane, wait to turn left because you are in danger of getting rear ended by traffic flying down coming straight toward Ocean Drive seeing that the light is green.. Remember, you cannot turn left since there is now on-coming traffic coming from Ocean Drive on other side of the median. This situation worsens as several events are staged for the same start times at the various venues. The larger the events the more congestion occurs. Believe it or not, one evening when the lights were not functioning at all, access was safer and quicker as drivers just took turns, stopping, yielding and allowing people access to turning left. It is beyond my comprehension as to why this situation has been allowed to continue for years and that an accidents have not occurred. One solution would be for a police officer to direct traffic to allow more cars to turn left. Another solution could be to re-time the left turn signal and remarking the other lane for la eft hand turn also. We continuously hear that the venues downtown are not making money and that people state that they hate going down through this area. We are getting more tourists who are not familiar with the area and that also complicates all issues. We supposedly are trying to improve revenues and attract more tourism to our downtown venues. I believe this is an issue that needs to be addressed, correctly fixed and certainly can be corrected without the hiring of yet another overpaid consultant. Let's just do something constructive and logical. I certainly do not want to hear that this is a state road and a TXDOT issue. Please respond. Thank you for your efforts, Sincerely, Nancy and Paul Tressa Island Thank you Mr. Tressa. I have sent this concern to our City’s Traffic Engineer and our Director of Capital Programs. Thank you,

1) make personal introductions to potential sponsors, who we’ll offer a variety of advertising and exposure to… (think hospital, home improvement stores, oil & gas, any other business that want time with us or our visiting friends and family, etc., etc.) 2) dedicate some time to help with various fundraising duties, some on your own and others with the group… (from brainstorming to organizing database of connections & conversations to taking charge of an actual event to painting a thermometer showing our progress to actually pitching to and more!) I’m a big believer that everyone knows someone that can help – sort of like being six degrees away from Kevin Bacon (although a recent social media expert said it’s now down to 4.7). However, they can’t help until they know you have a need and are given an idea of how they may be able to help. Which leads me back to you…we’d love your help in talking it up and asking those in our circle of influence how they could help be part of our solution! Whether you know exactly how to help or just wanna talk through the possibilities, please email me (Sara) at Info@PadreIslandDogPark.com. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Riley Dear Dale & Jan, I heard about Riley P. Dog on Channel 3 News recently and I am saddened by your loss. He was an awesome dog. My son, sister and I have had heelers or heeler cross dogs so we all have an affinity for the breed. I have shared your Moon articles (written by Riley) with family in Bakersfield, CA, Denver, CO, Eugene Oregon and most recently St.Paul, MN, and we have all gotten wonderful laughs over Riley’s adventures. My Dad ( in Oregon) has especially loved hearing about the stoopid cats. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet, to me, it was harder than losing a parent. My heart goes out to you. Cindy Frank Jan, Dale, Nicole, Walt & Rachel: We’re so sorry about Riley. We know what a big part of your life he was and how special he was to you all. Riley P. Dog will be missed by everyone who ever met him. I know how hard this is for you and wanted you to know that we’re thinking of you guys. We hope there’s lots of hot dogs in doggie heaven and no stoopid cats. Love, Chris, Mike & Alexandria
Dale & Jan, We are so sorry to hear about Riley P Dog. He was well loved on the Island and will be missed. Nancy & Howard Ludlow

Rally for Riley! If, like me, your heart dropped when you heard of the early departure of Riley P. Dog – then you probably won’t be surprised to hear about the overwhelming response we got on www.PadreIslandDogPark.com requesting the upcoming dog park be named after him. We couldn’t agree more and will be doing just that! As we move into the strategic fundraising phase, we are targeting larger sponsors first while preparing for the level of detail necessary to more forward with ease. To that end, I am officially putting out a “Rally for Riley” call out to anyone who can:

Backwater Adventures By Joey Farah
Mid May Madness
Farah’s Fishing Adventures As we reach the mid-point in the month of May I find myself pondering if it is March? This winter has held on like no other. Old Mother Nature is just a little behind this year, all of the hatching and movements out in the bay are about a month or more late. The live croakers are at the marinas in force but they are very small, too small for fishing when it is windy. There have been some good catches with the
Big orange redfish on live shrimp under a MID COAST OUTCAST cork. live croakers but mostly when the winds are down and the water is clear. I have continued to fish with shrimp and popping corks with great success. The Mid-Coast OUTCAST cork is casting twice as far as any other cork period. They were sold out at Academy but I found them at Roy’s Bait and Tackle as well. Long casts are very important when fishing with live shrimp and popping corks, the longer the bait is in the water and the cork and smell of the bait is attracting fish, the odds of you hooking a fish rises. The best rig I’ve found this week is a short leader of about 24inches with a split shot just
four inches above the shrimp. I have been using a #4 circle hook with a small piece of orange FISHBITES plus a shrimp. Both the main line and the leader tie to the same swivel on the cork. The Spring Bull Tides have finally come in as I thought they would this week. When the tide rises in our local bays look for fish to move to the tops of shallow sand bars and up close to shorelines. This week we have caught all our best fish on top of rock formations in Baffin Bay and on the change in bottom along the shallow grass lines in the Laguna Madre’. I have seen the tides pushing in through Packery Channel as well as down in Port Mansfield. This is what will bring our fish stocks up in Baffin Bay with the migration of tide runner trout north into the waters of Baffin Bay through the Land Cut. Many state biologists state that trout do not migrate, but they are following charts and net survey data, not fish. As a young angler I would sit for hours day after day listening to the stories of old salty men at the commercial fish house and local marinas. Hanging on every word as

they would explain just what the fish were doing at each time of year. For years now I have seen this bay flux back and forth with the change of season and tides. Yes trout migrate in and out of the waters of the Laguna Madre’ and Baffin Bay. This is the reason she has the name “MOTHER LAGOON.” The father island PADRE’ ISLAND protects the mother as she nurtures and spreads her fertile arms of life within her salty waters. Here the bay is protected against influx of fresh water, red tide, and strong storms. The rock structures down south and the endless shallow flats give crabs, shrimp, and baitfish an inland world of the best habitat to breed, grow and mature in masses. The Mother Lagoon’s children mature and move to the sea every Big jack fish coming in from Port Mansfield is a sure fall and fuels the millions of sign that the migration is on from the south. baitfish that flow out into the surf and ocean as well as the other bays from DOA LURES. I have used the lighter colors for bright sunny days and darker or natural colored baits when the clouds are out. All of these baits can be found at Roy’s Bait and Tackle as well, they have an amazing selection of DOA colors and baits. The MAY 31ST SEMINAR EVENT IS GOING TO BE ON FIRE! I have Capt. I have been blessed to have called him a friend and roll model on and off the water since I was a teenager watching him catch three thirty inch trout on camera back in the 80’s. We will also have speakers on OFFSHORE FISHING OUT OF PACKERY CHANNEL, this will fall just at the start of the red hot offshore season. The IN STATE reefs that were put out last year are easily in reach of most boats and with some good pointers from this seminar you will be ready to start going offshore in search of the BIG ONES. Senior Moments
Four infantry armies, three artillery divisions and an anti-aircraft regiment--260,000 men, crossed the Yalu into North Korea. Our position was overrun by a Chinese cavalry outfit. Yes horse cavalry, followed by wave after wave of infantry (soldiers on foot). When asked for his evaluation of the military escalation, General MacArthur downplayed it. He became involved in a controversy with General Stratemeyer over B-29 bombing of Yalu bridges. He was again urging escalation. Tensions and tempers were rising over the proposed handling of the Chinese situation. We all thought that we would be home (back in Japan) for Christmas In spite of the Chinese intervention, we, the troopers of the “1st Team” were still thinking about being "home by Christmas." Peggy and I had been married only six months when I shipped out to the “Korean Police Action.” MacArthur wanted to give an ultimatum to China which would have provoked Russia. He wanted to bomb Manchuria. His aggressive plans were upsetting both the British and U.S. Governments who feared WWIII if MacArthur was allowed to proceed. His misjudgments had a potential for catastrophe. His document for victory brought an accusation of "an insane plan." MacArthur announced, "Tell the troops that when we get to the Yalu River they can all go home. You will be home by Christmas." We had been to the Yalu River (we were under orders, not to even fire any weapons across the river). Lt. General Matthew Ridgway, Commanding General of the Eight Army, objected to General MacArthur’s plans. The situation in Korea was becoming precarious. Chinese troops were surrounding and overpowering many of our marine units, especially around the Chosen Reservoir. Weather at more than 20 below was taking its toll. Soon, we of the Eighth Army were in full retreat with a real catastrophe in the making. Most of MacArthur's requests were rejected outright as being unwise. Later President Truman said, "I should have relieved General MacArthur then and there".
MacArthur Contemplates the “Bomb.” With the on-coming defeat a distinct possibility, talk of using the Atomic Bomb was making the rounds. We, the “gravel pounders” were all for this idea. General Vandenberg, speaking for the Air Force, suggested they were prepared to use it. MacArthur suggested a plan to use numerous bombs. The U.S. had a stockpile of nearly 300 air-burst bombs. Only President Truman could order them used. MacArthur insisted on bombing the Yalu power plants with multiple strikes by B-29s. Suggestions came from all services and every General offered his own plan. Headlines on stateside papers gave the impression that MacArthur had already received the go-ahead after Truman said the U.S. was considering use of the Atomic weapon in connection with the war in Korea. The world watched and held its breath following the media frenzy. A state of affairs was rapidly going from bad to disastrous. In a conference in the war room Vandenberg dismissed the idea of sending MacArthur further orders. "What good would it do? He won't obey the orders." Ridgeway exploded. "You can relieve any commander, who won't obey orders, can't you?" Thus the idea of relieving MacArthur was on the table. MacArthur requested that the Pentagon grant him a field commander's discretion to employ nuclear weapons as necessary. He wanted them stockpiled in Okinawa. He explained he would drop between 30 and 50 atomic bombs-strung across the neck of Manchuria, and spread behind us, from the Sea of Japan to the Yellow Sea--a belt of radioactive cobalt--for at least 60 years; there would be no land invasion of Korea from the North. The Russians, he claimed, would be intimidated by this and do nothing. He continued to seek authority to deploy the bomb.
Truman Fires the Insubordinate Supreme Commander With all American forces in full retreat, some of the military decisions made by MacArthur were accused of accelerating the crisis. American losses, particularly marines, reached the unacceptable range. The U.S. retreat was humiliating. The conversation now turned to total evacuation of our forces. General Ridgway assumed more and more responsibility in decision making. The U.S., during a lull in the fighting, announced that negotiations might be possible with both sides separated by the 38th parallel. As usual MacArthur rejected the idea of a negotiated settlement. He continued to irritate Ridgway, however so far Ridgway had kept it to himself. MacArthur continued to make statements that were contrary to not only Ridgway but to the official position of Washington, and specifically Truman. The arrogant MacArthur had derailed the U.S. initiative with his "routine communiqué," which was actually a dare for China to continue the war. The Pentagon received his message, which infuriated many high ranking officials. Acheson said that MacArthur had "shot his mouth off" for the last time. The next morning Truman awakened to the news

As I sat through the presentations at the first State of The Island meeting Wednesday I was, like many there, a little overwhelmed by the change that is coming at us. For a complete account of the content of the presentations see the story in this issue; but to sum up the next fourteen months are going to see a metamorphosis on The Island, both Padre and Port Aransas, from residential to tourist. The changes that are already in the pipeline alone will push this process past a tipping point, and more change is certain to be added to the bandwagon between now and then.
In November 1950 I was in the 1st Cavalry Division (Infantry) a part of the Eighth Army. We had just moved into the North Korean Capital of Pyongyang and were looking forward to the promised withdrawal to Japan. We would leave the cleanup to the South Koreans. We had been told that General MacArthur believed the North Korean military had fled into Manchuria. How wrong he was!
of MacArthur's "sabotage." At that moment he could no longer tolerate his insubordination. Truman had considered firing MacArthur many times previous to this, but this was the last straw. Actually the order of December 6th which MacArthur had disobeyed, was explicit enough to warrant court-martial proceedings. MacArthur's statements were causing consternation in Washington as was his insulting personal letter to Ridgway. His advice letter to the House of Representatives again infuriated everyone. The British Government called the letter the "most dangerous" of an "apparently unending series of indiscretions." They claimed it was another irresponsible statement without the authorization of the U.S. or any U.N. member government. The Foreign Secretary complained that MacArthur wanted a war with China, and his leadership could no longer be tolerated. On April 6, 1951, a meeting was held with Truman to determine how to get rid of MacArthur. Truman insisted "I'm going to fire the son of a bitch right now." MacArthur was ordered to turn over his command at once to Lt. General Ridgway. General Bradley warned Truman that if MacArthur heard about the orders before they reached him officially, he might resign with an arrogant flair. Truman exclaimed, "The son of a bitch isn't going to resign on me, I want him fired." MacArthur's dismissal was announced on late night radio: "With deep regret I have concluded that General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur, is unable to give his wholehearted support to the policies of the U.S. Government and of the U.N. in matters pertaining to his official duties. In view of the specific responsibilities imposed upon me by the Constitution of the U.S. and the added responsibilities entrusted to me by the U.N., I have decided that I must make a change in command in the Far East. I have, therefore, relieved General MacArthur of his command and have designated Lt. Gen. Matthew Ridgway as his successor." MacArthur accepted the unsurprising news impassively. He said that he had never disobeyed orders, and that his dismissal was a plot in Washington to weaken the American position in the Far East. When we first heard the news of the firing, we couldn’t believe it. Our first question was who is replacing him and the second question was, will there be any “real” changes? After reviewing everything that happened in 1950 & 1951, I truly believe that had General MacArthur been left in charge, 63 years ago this month, I would have been swimming for my life in The Sea of Japan. Dotson, as an Islander of 22 years and an avid reader of your column in the Moon I particular relate to the May 8th memories. I joined the Army on December 7, 1945 three days past my 17th birthday. Yes, I was a school dropout. In latter February 1946, after a long merchant ship voyage I ended up in Wiesbaden Germany. There I was recruited into a new outfit intended to police
Following my stateside return I managed to get a GED and get a year of college. After the end of the next segment I continued my degree pursuit and received a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University in New York City. As,l ike you, Harry was looking for bodies to throw into Korea. As an inactive reservist I was called up, and literally, with no re-train-ing and another long sea voyage I ended up going over the side of a landing craft into Inchon in September 1950. The winter of 1950 will always be etched in my memory. Anyway, I returned home in October 1951. My wife and I have been fortunate to have made many trips to Asia and Europe since I retired in 1992, and I assure you I prefer to pay my own-way rather than travel at the expense of Uncle Sam. Look forward to your future columns. Monty Sontag

STATE
Island Moon
It is important that we recognize the service of our men and women who have served or are currently serving in our armed services. Their commitment to our country as well as the state of Texas is truly admirable. One of the things that was created to help honor those who have felt the calling to serve their country in our military was to establish the month of May as the 15th annual National Military Awareness Month (NMAM). The NMAM was first designated in 1999 by the United States Congress and was strengthened and broadened in 2004 to increase the recognition of our United States military. This designation was created with the intent to recognize and honor those who have served in our military and their families. This designation enjoyed the support of over 50 different veteran service organizations. This act set aside the entire month of May in order to recognize our military and to honor, appreciate and remember those who have served. According to the National Military Awareness Month website, the month of May "provides a period encompassing both the history and recognition of our armed services with an indepth look at the diversity of its individuals and achievements. It allows Americans to educate each generation on the historical impact of our military through the participation of the community with those who serve encouraging patriotism and love for America." Our military service members represent the highest caliber of professionalism and should be commended for their service to our country. It is wonderful that this month is designated to honor these current and former members of our armed services. Their website goes on to point out that "this month gives the nation a time and place on which to focus and draw attention to our many expressions of appreciation and recognition of our armed services via numerous venues and also to recall and learn about our vast American military history." The month of May can work
SEA continued from A1 another $100,000 for near-shore artificial reefs over the next two years. SEA is also at the forefront of the fight to turn old offshore rigs into reefs by removing the tops of the rigs and sinking them on site to become havens for Gulf sea life. The group has been battling onerous federal regulations which make use of the rigs for reefs expensive for private industry resulting in their removal and the destruction of marine habitats which has grown around them. Since 2010 more than 650 platforms have been removed from the Gulf. Most of the platforms have been removed in the Coastal Bend and more are scheduled to be decommissioned. However, SEA was able to capture about half of the platforms to add to the existing artificial reef sites. Currently conservationists are able to cut the top off the rigs and leave the bottom in place because of the work of SEA. SEA is the leader in working to stop this process. If you fish or dive the offshore rigs you owe a debt of gratitude to SEA. SEA has also supported the Marine Development Center in Flour Bluff with $7,000 and the University of Texas Marine Science Institute at Port Aransas with $10,000 for the Tarpon Project. Another $10,000 of SEA funds were used to enhance the Texas flounder population through research and stocking programs. They also invested $37,000 to promote fishing and conservation through theKid Katch, KidFish, Go for Fish not Drugs and Kid Camp programs. SEA is a locally-funded organization which supports local projects. They are also a group of folks who know how to have a good time and on Thursday, May 22, they will have their annual fundraising banquet at 5:30 at the American Bank Center. to encourage educators to try and develop various lesson plans that will seek to describe the history of all of our military branches. The NMAM includes a number of days during the month designed to provide specific recognition to events, days, groups and members that are apart of or associated with the United States Military May 1st is Loyalty Day, May 8th is VE Day, May 9th is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 17th is Armed Forces Day, and May 26th is Memorial Day. The month of May is a very important month of honors, recognitions, and remembrances for our military. This month is meant to recognize the men and women that have made the decision to serve throughout our history as well as those who now currently serve in our military along with their families. In addition, we should always remember the many Americans who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms that we all appreciate today. The historic designation of the month of May being National Military Appreciation Month reminds us of the resilient Americans who have made the choice to serve in our military. Our members of the armed services continue to play an integral role in the development of our country as well as preserving the many rights and freedoms we enjoy today. This month allows us to remember and honor those who have served in the military over the past 237 years. If you would like to learn more about the National Military Appreciation Month, you can visit their website at: http://www.nmam.org/ If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. History continued from A1 to Asia across Alaska to Russia. The llama evolved here and migrated to South America. They eventually went extinct in North America, but survived in their new homes. Mammoths and mastodons are well known, and both lived in South Texas. There was a giant sloth that weighed more than three tons. There were giant armadillos, giant javelinas and a rodent, related to the South American capybara, which weighed 150 pounds. Imagine a 150-pound hamster! There was an American Lion, bigger than the modern African Lion, and the saber-toothed cat. There were dire wolves and some really big bears.
The end of the ice age may have had greater extremes of seasons and hot and cold. Extinction No one is sure why these animals became extinct. The end of the ice age may have had greater extremes of seasons and hot and cold. The arrival of early man may have been responsible, also. Between the climate change and these intelligent, dedicated two-legged hunters, the age of the giant animals ended. The only surviving large animals from this period of time in South Texas are the white-tailed deer and the mountain lion.

Beach Books Full of Hijinks, Mayhem, and Even Murder by Devorah Fox devorahfox.com Memorial Day is around the corner and you may already be planning how to spend a long weekend holiday. In addition to attending events honoring the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, maybe you’ll be gathering with friends and family, boating or fishing, barbequeing or perhaps just lounging on the beach.
Need something entertaining to read while you hold down that lounge chair? Then you’ll be glad to know that Port Aransas author Richard Mueller has released another book. Richard is one of the editors and contributors to Texas Island Style, an anthology of short stories, poems and even songs that was compiled by members of the Port A Pens writing group and the youth writer members of the Port A Pencils. Some of his stories have been posted on the FanStory writers’ site; The Castroville, Texas, Library Web site; and, one story, David’s Gift, was printed in Chicken Soup for the Catholic Soul. Released last month is Richard’s newest compilation of stories, As the Pizza Burns. It’s a collection of vignettes and tales inspired by events and conversations observed during an adult lifetime spent, as Richard says, “in the Pizza Soap Opera of Our Lives.” In these tales of hijinks and mayhem, Michael’s Italian Grill is the main setting for the antics of its crew: • Michael – Balding, 50ish, owner/operator of Michael’s Italian Grill—provides a mostly steadying influence in a hand tossed world.
in the bunch. • Richie-- Chubby, balding, Michael’s Italian Grill Pizza Manager, a compiler and teller of tales. If that sounds like Mueller himself, it’s because these are his stories collected during a lengthy career in the pizza business. Stirring the pot is the ringmaster of this saucy circus, Chef Crustini. He’s the Pasta Chef in Michael’s Italian Grill, in his forties, a tad on the plump side, and speaks broken Italian/American English. The stories are punctuated with his favorite offer ”You wanna some pasta?” Richard invites you to grab a copy from www.amazon.com, “draw up a chair, grab a slice, and enjoy as our lives go to pizzas” and warns that if you like these tales he just might write more. Speaking of local authors, my own most recent release, Naked Came the Sharks, was recently nominated as one of 50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading. Also a tale of mayhem, not to mention murder, it’s set in the Texas Coastal Bend. I’m proud to report that both Naked Came the Sharks and my other novel, The King’s Ransom, made the short list in this contest conducted by Indie Author Land. You can vote to make each of the books the ultimate winners in their categories, Thriller for Naked Came the Sharks and Fantasy for the King’s Ransom. You can vote a total of FIVE times for each book. You don’t have to buy the books or even register in order to vote. Just go to the Indie Author Land Web site via the links below. When you access the ballots, you may find another candidate book preselected. Just click on mine instead.
• Chi Chi-- Twentyish, waitress/cashier at the Grill, young black woman with a fluffy Afro, and a “take no prisoners” attitude.

• Oscar Crookshank-The town’s Police Chief, affectionately known as “Crook,” one of Michael’s regulars, known for offering wry observations and comments on many of the occurrences.

• Marge--White-Haired smiling, blue-eyed wife of Richie, the Pizza Manager, a charter member of the Red Hat Ladies and one of the sane ones
Your vote can send these two books to the top of the charts. Voting ends May 18th so hurry to the ballot box. I’ll see you there.--http://devorahfox.com
In California, many of these beasts fell into the La Brea tar pits and their fossilized bones were preserved. In South Texas, many of their bones can still be found. The bones gradually absorbed minerals and became like rock, preserving the shape of the original bone. The town of Ingleside, along with some gravel quarries in Nueces County, was one of the great discoveries of large numbers of these fossils. Swan Lake, on Avenue A in Ingleside, was a sand pit, where the largest find in Texas of these fossils was made. The University of Texas has over 5,000 fossilized bones and fragments taken from Swan Lake in 1939-1941.

Island Moon
Why Run Beach to Bay?
By Chad Peters Hooray, the biggest, baddest and best sporting event to our beautiful city comes around again this weekend. (Biggest relay marathon in the nation!) Welcome to the Island 3500, or so, of the first 2 legs of all people that for a weekend consider themselves runners. Well really that’s not fair, there are a lot of talented and accomplished runners on this island, but for the majority this may be really the only running you get all year. Ok Ok, I hear you, I know you started out 2 weeks ago and have put in 3-4x now so you should be prepared. How do I know you may not be prepared? Because I’m a sports based chiropractor and my office is bursting at the seams with knee issues and hip issues and low back issues from unconditioned runners. “Get me back in the Game doc!” So what do you have to say for yourselves? What should I say? Hey, you know me, I want you to run this. This is our BIG EVENT! How many times have I said in the last 2 months, “Go Have Fun.” But maybe for next year you have a better idea of what it takes to run better, faster, farther and with less stress and injury. The good news is we have a lot of great resources in this city to make that happen. You can be better and you can have more fun by being in better running shape. Look, I’m not going to make you Kenyan fast, I’m not going to make you a skinny marathoner and I’m not suggesting you log 50 miles a week, I just want you to be able to run and not hurt. Running 4.6 miles shouldn’t be an unobtainable goal.

from a football player and general big guy to a runner (and man did I hate running) was to do what I do – figure out if there is an easier, minimal effort and better efficiency way of doing it. The answer of course was “Yes” there is. Try the Galloway Method, I highly recommend it and this is pretty much the only way I run. Here’s a sample; Run for 2-3 minutes, walk for 30 seconds, repeat. Sound easy? It is way-way easier than just flat running. There is a lot of science behind this method as well. For all that science I strongly encourage you to look up “Jeff Galloways method of running marathons, ½ marathons, 5K’s etc.” His books are great and he has transformed the running world – Doesn’t sound like real running? I would have you know that a lot of the top pacers in the country (the guys at big marathons you pace off –typically in a big green 5 shirt for 5 min mile pace (that’s really fast) 6 -7-8-9-10 are Galloway method runners. These guys put in multiple marathons a year and know their pace innately, they are REAL runners. As you progress get to 3 minutes, 3:30, 4 and then rest 30 sec. Always 30 sec. You will need a timer or Amazon what’s called a “Gym Boss” for this 2 timer method. (my sweet spot is 3:40, meaning I run for 3:40 and walk 30 sec) - You know how much a straight up, full time runner will pull ahead of me during my 30 sec walk? Not much --AND over the course of even a 5K, 10K, ½ or full marathon I maintain the exact pace all the time- I don’t slow down because my body doesn’t go into depleted energy mode… most novice runners tend to slowly lose their pace, so most often I separate from my group by the middle of the race.
Play with it and try.
So here’s a few tips from “Uncle Chad” (Uncle Chad being the cool family member that knows enough about a few things to not be nerdy, degrading or up in your grill - you know, the guy you can go to for just the right amount of advice-I want to be that guy! Note: Uncle Tom is my real life guy for this.) Ask yourself – “Do I want to become the BEST runner in the event by next year. If yes, find a trainer, you need more than this article has to offer you. If No, - “I want to run pain free, easily, while maintaining my pace with my friend, husband or newly found hot acquaintance running buddy then by all means.. proceed with the article…. One of the first steps I did when transitioning
2nd tip – get some rest – why oh why do runners swear on so much mileage?? The newest sports science shows intensity makes you faster, not long slow duration and countless miles of pounding. Try doing intervals like 400’s and 800’s focusing on faster pace with an emphasis on holding times faster than your normal jog and concentrating on how much recovery time you need! Rest will be the new volume in sports training in the next ten years mark my words – it just seems counterintuitive. WARNING:INTERVAL TRAINING IS HARD, BE CAREFUL, GET ADVICE IF YOU NEED HELP! 3rd tip: use weights and work out. What? For running? Yes! Latest research shows working out with weights and gaining muscle makes you faster, but conversely, long slow duration doesn’t make you stronger. So ditch the 5 days a week of running, opt for 3 and maybe 4 but add in some Island Crossfit or stop by Island Fitness to get you Lift on and make it easier. And more fun! See you Saturday, I’ll be the bald guy stopping every 3:40 and smiling my way through the run.

As assortment of beverages was whisked to the table, by an amazingly attentive staff, followed by a scrumptious brunch cooked and served by male members of the PIYC. The Mother’s Day Brunch drew a crowd from the Padre Island Yacht Club as over 100 hungry members and guests enjoyed the brunch, the views from the top floor of the yacht club, and the ambiance. Plates of eggs benedict and asparagus followed fresh fruit cocktail as the dapper kitchen crew worked with untold precision and unimagined efficiency.
