Those were the last two words he said at his press conference, but believe me; he is far from finishing his story. Unfortunately, we live in a world where good news no longer sells. The television media adhere to the concept of “If it bleeds, it leads.”

Our kids are exposed to daily stories of players taking performance-enhancing drugs, players cheating on their wives, and handguns in the locker room; children born out of wedlock, players driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana, falsifying tax records, and racism become front page stories. I think the invention of social media formats also gives people a way

Ties that bind My parents were both born poor, raised on large farms in eastern North Carolina. Large families, hard work, lots of love, and a healthy dose of religion were the ties that bind them all together. My parents also occasionally played sports, my mother played high-school basketball and my dad was a catcher on the baseball team. They understood that sports would unite my brother and me. They knew there would be many obstacles that would try to separate us, but sports would not be one of them.

Every once in a while, we come across a player who is willing to drop that curtain that they hide behind; they erase the facade of what they have been told they should represent. They bare their soul for all to see, and we become

“You’re the real MVP.” said Kevin Durant; and the room stood and applause filled the sound on the TV. There is no end to Kevin Durant’s speech, only the beginning. Take the time to love one another, to appreciate others and tell them how you feel about them. Whether he and the Thunder win the NBA Championship is really beside the point. He has already won the most important game in life. True joy comes from the giving of one’s self.

So, Happy Mother’s Day; to all the mothers out there, who believe in their child’s dreams and understand that they were doing it all for them. Someone once said, “Whoever you are, there is some young person out there that thinks you are perfect.” Kevin Durant is not perfect, but he’s close enough for me.

Congressman Farenthold Calls for IG Investigation of Central Texas VA Facilities Following Allegations of Misconduct Congressman Blake Farenthold (TX-27) joined several members of the Texas delegation this week in calling for an Inspector General investigation into allegations that Veterans Affairs (VA) officials in Central Texas manipulated medical appointment data in order to conceal long wait times for veterans seeking care.

According to media reports, employees at the North Central Federal Clinic in San Antonio, the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic and Waco VA Medical Center were instructed by supervisors to ensure that wait times for veterans were as “close to zero days as possible.” A VA employee who recently worked at all three clinics claims that staffers falsely logged patients’ desired appointment dates to closely coincide with appointment openings. But in reality, veterans were left waiting for months.

These new allegations come on the heels of reports that at least 40 veterans in Phoenix died while waiting to receive care. In their letter, Congressman Farenthold and fellow Texas representatives called on Veterans Affairs Acting Inspector General Richard Griffin to

immediately initiate investigations into all three VA facilities.

It’s the televised National Football League draft. It started last Thursday and continued until late Saturday. I have friends who were busy all week tacking up ``Do Not Disturb’’ signs and betting on who they think will be the No.1. They wanted me to join them but I, frankly, have a life.

Nor do I think this televised draft business is healthy. Why, just the other day a skeleton was found in a reclining chair. A notebook was clutched in the bones of one hand. ``Mel Kiper still talking,’’ the poor soul had written. ``Sixth round not yet begun. Out of food and water.

No longer know the day. Don’t know if I can continue.’’

I remember when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers participated in their first NFL draft. I remember the year was 1976 and the Tampa Bay pick was Oklahoma defensive tackle Lee Roy Selmon.

But nobody has ever asked this particular trivia question so my little gem of knowledge has been of no value. It should have been worth a brew, or maybe a dollar.

Last week, I was talking to another friend. I asked him what he thought of the President’s recent press conference. ``I started to watch it but changed the channel,’’ he said. ``It was boring.’’

Then he invited me to his Saturday get-together. ``We’ll watch the draft and have a little fun.’’

Because we humans have an insatiable yearning to satisfy our own curiosity.

When we buy something new, we won’t spend more than 10 seconds reading instructions or directions. We would rather mess around until we get it going or it breaks. But we will spend hours in front of a television, watching a bunch of grown men whisper to each other and talk on the telephone.

Our reward will be the name of a football player.

Next fall, during the Sunday afternoon games, we will have forgotten the name of this football player. The television camera will zoom in on him and we will turn to our game-watching buddy and ask, ``When did they get him?’’

Our buddy will scratch his head and say ``dunno.’’ If said game is being watched in a tavern, somebody will set the record straight because there is one in every crowd.

Another friend asked me who I thought the Rams would take in the first round. Doesn’t make any difference, I said. They need so much help one player is little more than a spit in the ocean. ``You’re wrong and here’s why,’’ he trumpeted.

He was somewhere between assessing offensive tackles and the kicking game when I tuned him out and continued on with my pursuit of happiness.

What I think and what he preaches won’t mean diddle come Saturday or Sunday. Or the turn of the century. Which is about when the Rams will finish their current rebuilding project and again be a Super Bowl contender.

Fast food workers from such mega companies as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s are calling on their employers to pay them a minimum wage of $15 and respect workers’ rights worldwide. Fast-food worker strikes are planned in up to 150 cities across the nation and in 33 countries. The protest movement began in 2012 in New York and now includes such cities as Houston, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Gulf Shrimp Season Closing May 15 The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both Texas and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset on May 15 until a still-to-be determined time in July.

The closing date is based on samples collected by the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department using trawl, bag seine and other information gathered from the shrimping industry.

Data collected regarding TPWD bag seine catch rates of brown shrimp, mean lengths of shrimp in April 2014, percent of samples containing shrimp, and periods of maximum nocturnal ebb tidal flow indicate a May 15 closing date is appropriate. Typically, once the shrimp reach about 3 1/2 inches long, they begin their migration to the gulf.

“The purpose of moving the closure date this year is tied to when the shrimp are projected to leave the bays,” says TPWD’s coastal fisheries science director Mark Fisher. “Due to cooler spring temperatures and higher salinities, shrimp growth rates appear to be slower this spring.”

Fisher says the data suggest that keeping the closure date will afford protection to small shrimp as they begin their movement from the bays to the gulf.

“The closure is designed to allow these small shrimp after escapement to the gulf to grow to a larger, more valuable size before they are vulnerable to harvest,” said Robin Riechers, TPWD coastal fisheries division director. “The goal is to achieve optimum benefits for the shrimping industry while providing proper management to protect the shrimp.”

The Texas closure applies to gulf waters from the coast out to nine nautical miles. The National Marine Fisheries Service has announced federal waters out to 200 nautical miles also will be closed to shrimping to conform to the Texas closure.

Kerrville Folk Festival Opens May 22

The Kerrville Folk Festival 2014 opens on May 22 with a stellar rockin’ lineup. First up at 7PM to begin this 18 day songwriters event is Steve Poltz one of the most entertaining individualistic artists to hit the scene in many years. He is followed by Parker Millsap from the Okemah Oklahoma area (think Woody Guthrie and Grammy nominated John Fullbright). It has been wondered what DO they have in the water there with several amazing young Oklahoma writers making big waves in the industry really quickly. Ray Benson, from Asleep at the Wheel, has a new solo CD release and has been touring with the band from Austin, MilkDrive. They have played Kerrville Festivals several times with their own material and will be featured in a short set before Ray comes out to share his songs with MilkDrive as his band.

Closing the opening evening is Dale Watson and his Lone Stars.

They will have the dancers in full swing that’s for sure.

Saharan Dust May Cause More Harmful Bacteria in Gulf

Researcher to Look at Dust’s Effects on Flesh-Eating Vibrio A population explosion of the flesh-eating bacteria, Vibrio, may just be one of the many realities the Gulf Coast will face in the future.

Every summer big dust plumes leave the Saharan and Sahel deserts in Africa and travel across the Atlantic. The dust eventually gets deposited in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf – including coastal Texas.

Dr. Michael Wetz, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has secured a $220,758 grant that will allow him to provide insight into the effects of global climate change on growth of marine bacteria such as Vibrio. The grant, funded by the National Science Foundation, will provide the first look on how marine bacteria respond to the long term effects of Saharan Dust.

Vibrio is common in bodies of water, including Corpus Christi Bay, and lives off energy from its environment. This is where Saharan dust comes in. Bacteria, like Vibrio, absorb nutrients from the dust that falls in the ocean and use these nutrients to survive and multiply. More dust in our atmosphere means more dust in our oceans and could trigger a population explosion of Vibrio.

“Climate models suggest that the Saharan and Sahel regions of Africa are likely to become drier over the coming century due to climate change,” said Wetz. “These factors suggest that there will likely be more of this dust going into the atmosphere and oceans, potentially leading to more outbreaks of organisms such as Vibrio.”

Wetz said other studies suggest that this dust affects growth of not only vibrio, but also microbes that cause coral disease in the Caribbean, as well as growth of the red tide organism in the Gulf of Mexico.

Wetz will focus on Vibrio’s response to Saharan dust and identify the key components of the dust that causes bacterial outbreaks in the environment.

“One of my big research interests is understanding how climate and human-driven environmental change affects coastal water quality,” said Wetz. “This study has direct linkages to climate change, and the response of these organisms will have significant implications for the health of our marine ecosystems.”

The project is set to take place in the Florida Keys and Wetz will collaborate with Dr. Erin Lipp from the University of Georgia, who is the Primary Investigator on the project. Other collaborators include Dr. Bill Landing from Florida State University, Dr. Liz Ottesen from the University of Georgia, Dr. Dale Griffin from USGS, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Professor of Mathematics Dr. Blair Sterba-Boatwright.

While the statutory opening date for the gulf season is July 15, TPWD’s Coastal Fisheries Division will be sampling shrimp populations to determine the optimum opening date. The date of the re-opening of gulf waters will be based on data collected in June, but the closure may not be longer than 60 days.

The Secret to a Bountiful Garden and Beautiful Landscape

by Melinda Myers Spring is here and the garden centers are filled with beautiful plants. Many of us are making our way to one or more of our favorite garden shops. We leave with a car full of beautiful flowers and healthy vegetables with hopes of a bountiful harvest.

When I was there I was told about an American Group that had come to do archeology of La Isabela. The Dominicans hearing of a group of dignitaries coming to look at La Isabela, took it upon themselves to treat the Americans right went to clean the site up so it could be inspected.

They moved in with bulldozers and cleared the area to make it “easy” on the Americans! It is amazing to me that Yale was able to find what they did after the Dominicans had “prepared the site. As a Native American I was presented by the Dominicans with an Indian Bow that had been found on the mountain overlooking the site. I was proud to send this old bow to my father that has it on his wall with other Indian artifacts.

On a slight bluff overlooking the site is the shell of the residence belonging to Columbus. Covered with a thatched awning, the ruin shows that he lived in a modest dwelling made of packed earth and stone.

Still the Largest Unrestricted U.S. Fishing Tournament On Saturday, May 17, Aransas Bay will be filled with women!

They will be coming for the annual Jim Ehman Memorial “Babes on the Bay” fishing tournament in the Rockport- Fulton area.

It is the largest one day unrestricted fishing tournament in the United States. Last year Babes on the Bay had another recordbreaking year with 1,472 ladies, of all ages participating. The ladies who fish the tournament range from elementary school students to great-grandmothers. If the fishing tournament itself is not unique enough, the team names certainly are: Bustin’ Tops, Hootie and the Go Fish, Texas Tails, and Reel Hookers…just to name a few. Now in its 15th year, Babes on the Bay has 1,302 ladies registered for fishing this year’s tournament.

At its April 2014 meeting, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council requested an emergency rule to revise the recreational accountability measures for red snapper by applying a 20-percent buffer to the recreational quota, which results in a recreational annual catch target of 4.312 million pounds whole weight. This emergency rule will not affect the commercial harvest of red snapper in the reef fish fishery.

The kick-off for Babes on the Bay will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday ,May 16, at the Rockport Festival Grounds. The fishing tournament officially begins at sunrise on Saturday, May 17.

Weigh-in for the event will be from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Prizes will be given for five divisions. The divisions are as follows: Team with a professional guide (any bait); Team with a Professional Guide (artificial only); team with Non-Professional Guide (any bait); Team with Non-Professional Guide (artificial only); and Babe-ette Division (ages 16 and under). 1st -5th places will be awarded for the first four divisions with additional prizes for Babe-ette Division. Awards will be presented at approximately 6 p.m., following the weigh-in on Saturday.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council's decision to request an emergency rule was made following the decision of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Guindon v. Pritzker, (Mar. 26, 2014). After recalculating the season length based on the annual catch target and including the 2013 Marine Recreational Information Program data, NOAA Fisheries is setting a 9-day red snapper fishing season.

The purpose of this rulemaking is to better ensure red snapper recreational landings do not exceed the recreational quota established in the rebuilding plan, in accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and the Court's ruling.

Guardians Rescue is a foster-based rescue on The Island. We are in need of volunteers to help on the weekends at our adoption events that are usually held on Sat/Sun at Ace Hardware.

Clear your overdue library fines during the month of May by donating pet food for our four legged friends at any of the Corpus Christi Public Libraries. Food will benefit the Animeals program which provides food to pets belonging to Meals on Wheels recipients. Pets belonging to clients of the Women’s Shelter will also benefit from this drive.

He said when the non-Schlitterbahn projects are finished they will include six locally-owned restaurants expected to be open in 2015.

“This bridge will turn Padre Island from a north/south vehicular island into an east/west pedestrian island,” Schexnailder told the gathering. “The bridge will be the link that will allow people on The Island to get to the Gulf of Mexico or to Snoopy’s without interruption.”

“We are avoiding chain restaurants on the grounds that when you come to the coast you don’t want to eat at the same restaurant you can eat at next to your home. We’re looking for local participation.”

Corpus Christi’s Chief Engineer Dan Biles said he expects the plan for the bridge to be “90% complete n the next two to six weeks” and to be ready for bids by the fall of this year. The project is expected to take up to fifteen months to build and complete by the end of 2015 or early 2016. The bridge as currently designed will consist of three separate arches allowing a forty-foot wide water passage with 34-foot wide pedestrian and golf cart paths on each side and thirteen feet of boat clearance from the waterline to the underside of the bridge.

Palmilla Golf and Resort Officials from the Palmilla Beach project, backed by San Antonio financier Red McCombs, described their plans for the high-end development surrounding the golf course across SH 361 from Island Moorings. These include the building of the Sea Gate condominium development with units ranging in price from $360,000 to over $1 million expected to be complete by summer 2015; lots ranging from $190,000 to $1 million; a swim center open by this summer; and the golf course managed by Troon Golf Management which manages high-end golf resorts around the world. They also described plans for a hotel on the site and possibly a conference center.

Schexnailder, who has now taken on part of the permitting process for the bridge, described how the Island Walk, a new canal more than 3000 feet long and lined on both sides with new development, will connect the east and west sides of the road, and will be roughly the size of the Bricktown development that in the last decade has transformed downtown Oklahoma City into a tourist destination. He said expects permitting for the Island Walk to be in place in time for digging of the canals on the east side of SPID to begin by early summer 2014.

“High net worth buyers are returning to the market on a large scale now,” one official said.

All of this development is driven by the fast-growing population within four hours drive of The Island and the underused Texas coast.

“Nationwide 11% of tourist dollars are spent on the coast,” Schexnailder said. .”But in Texas that number is 6%. That means we don’t have to look outside of Texas to find a market.”

He said that by June, 2015, Beachwalk Village on the west side of SPID will be open and include restaurants, as well as a multiuse community with retail on the ground floor of buildings and residential above.

Other highlights

He also by June, 2015, the Marina Village will be open on the east side of SPID with the marina on Lake Padre expected to be open by that time. It will include 1400 on-site parking places.

Here are some other highlights from the event: The main building at Schlitterbahn has now expanded to 120,000 square feet. It includes a covered patio, 35 x 270 feet, and a total of four decks which will look south from the building onto the park and a 2000-person capacity amphitheatre which will be built partially over the pump system for the park.

Also expected to be complete by the end of 2015 is a 200 unit apartment complex and 120 condos on an 80-acre site wrapping around Island House on the south end of the seawall, complete with a parking garage.

The first floor of the building will include 3600 square-feet of retail space and a restaurant named Fajitas which will be open to the public. The second floor of the building will be for local residents and will include a lounge, food service, and a game room for kids. The third floor will house a 4500 square-foot events center and six break-out meeting rooms. The fourth floor will feature a fine-dining restaurant and a private dining room for club members. Adjacent and connected to the main building will be eighty hotel rooms.

“By this time next summer we will have several things in place that will make this a unique destination experience,” Schexnailder said.

He said Phase II of the project will include Balli Village with 6000 feet of waterfront lots on the east side of SPID will be connected to the remainder of the Island by water taxi.

Schexnailder said the floating building will be brought through the canal system to the Aquarius Extension where sand dikes will be used to form a lock system which will float the barge over the street into the newly dug canal east of the roadway.

Let it rain, let it pour…

The wetlands in Port A are once again... wet When it rains, it pours. As I am writing this on Tuesday afternoon, the view from my desk overlooks the wetlands at the end of 6th Street in Port A and I am happy to report they are indeed wet again. That big rain early Tuesday morning was a whopper. And soon big white birds will be wading around these newly flooded wetlands looking for food and most certain to follow will be several kazillion mosquitoes. I like the birds.

You can have the mosquitoes. One thing that I always love about Spring (other than big Spring showers) is the sudden onslaught of mudbugs… you know, crawdads. Some people call them bait, but I love to eat them. They generally come from Louisiana and are abundant this time of year because it’s their spawning season. Edwin and Amy over at Giggity’s had a big sack of them the other night and they were delicious. Another great thing about Spring around here is the live music scene starts to explode. With Memorial Day a little more than a week away, our little islands are about to be over run with summer visitors, so enjoy it while you can… pretty soon it will be all tourists and mosquitoes, and not a mudbug in sight. Let’s talk about some music!

W.C. Clark played the Back Porch last Saturday wobbly. On Friday, the Rusty Brothers put on a good show in spite of the bad weather and poor turn-out. I had never seen these guys before but was impressed. They have a very cool country groove and are all excellent musicians. Also, I wrote a little piece on LeBron last week and I hope you will check them out. Their show at the Upper Deck was pretty amazing. They will be at Giggity’s this Wednesday. Miss Caldwell is an exceptional guitarist and she and Bron have found a wonderful chemistry with this Latin jazz material (and beyond). It’s very comfortable.

I want to fill you in on a new development in the adorable world of Tiffany Tuesday. Tiffany holds court every Tuesday night at Giggity’s. This is an on going show that started at the Tarpon Ice House a couple of years ago.

Tiffany plays a variety of original Tiffany plays every and current adult Tuesday at Giggity’s. comtemporary/ alt-rock favorites and often invites friends up to perform. Well, Tiff is taking this tradition to the next level and will begin featuring different guest artists each week. She’ll be doing some fun stuff on stage with her guests like interviewing them, playing some fun games and generally making some cool music. In the coming weeks, Tiffany has invited Ruben Limas (May 20), David Martinex (May 27), Jimmy Wilden (June 3), Black Betty (June 10), Steven Rushlow (June 17) and Brian Christopher Meyerdick (June 24). I saw some good shows by Chris Garza and Red Giant (Corpus Christi, TX) and Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX) over at Giggity’s, the John Cortez blues band and Jim Dugan over at Shorty’s and the Rusty Brothers (Dallas, TX) and the incomparable W.C. Clark (Austin, TX) over at the Back Porch. Also, LeBron (Lela Caldwell and Bron Doyle) played the Upper Deck. W.C. put on one killer show as he is famous for. It was nice to see all the old Austin ex-pats out on that gorgeous Saturday night. He was in top form and his voice is still as velvety smooth as it’s always been.
