By Captain Arthur Helmsteadt and his dog Fred The last few weeks have been busy for Sarah and me. I missed the last issue because we were on a much needed vacay down in the British Virgin Islands. We go almost every year around this time for 10 amazing days of sailing and diving with friends from Ft. Worth. This year we decided to take a catamaran
rather than a traditional mono hull. I think we’re both sold on multihull configurations. Sure, they don’t “point” quite as well as the mono’s and they aren’t nearly as classic looking but there is nothing like making

Boat fire
I’m sure most of yall have heard about the boat fire on The Island several days ago. It was a tragic event which almost took the life of a fellow island resident. He removed some bad fuel from the tanks of his 28’ Carver when the vapors ignited causing a massive explosion. He suffered burns on over 50% of his body and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for further treatment. The boat burned and sank. My company was hired to remove the vessel from the water to prevent any further environmental damage.
Luckily, the lower end of the hull was still fairly intact and it only required lifting bags and pumps to get it floating again. Folks, this kind of accident can
New this year is the collecting of plastic grocery bags, newspaper bags and dry cleaning bags for recycling.

than 1,600 of these were found cold stunned during February.
This was the largest cold stunning event recorded since the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network was established in 1980. In my Ph.D. dissertation, I identified that cold stunning was the most significant source of mortality of green turtles in Texas during the 1980s and 1990s, and it remains to be so. So, what is cold stunning? Cold

stunning occurs when these reptiles become immobilized at cold temperatures and float to the surface or wash ashore. It occurs when severe cold fronts pass through the area and drastically drop water temperatures, typically in the bays where the shallow water cools quickly and the turtles are unable to escape due to limited access points to the Gulf. This green turtle was decomposed so it was not possible to identify cause of death based on an external examination. It’s head and one flipper were partially detached, which could have occurred due to a boat propeller injury or decomposition. There was no indication that it died due to red tide or cold water temperatures.
Network participants document each turtle on a standardized form, transport live individuals to rehabilitation, and retrieve or bury dead individuals.

A green turtle was found washed ashore in Cole Park this week. KRIS and KIII filmed the turtle and included that footage in their news broadcasts that night and the next day. We have posted a photo of this turtle and linked the two news segments on our Facebook page entitled: Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery. This turtle captured the attention of a lot of people. To some it did not seem like much of a story since more than 1,800 green turtles have been found stranded on the Texas coast so far this year. However, to others, it was an important event. It was the first sea turtle that they saw a sea turtle in person, or on television. The green turtle is federally and state listed as a threatened species in Texas. This turtle was found dead and both young and old were moved by this sad event of an animal perishing while it was still a juvenile.
Stranded sea turtles are found and recorded one at a time. Sea urtle Stranding and Salvage Network participants search for stranded sea turtles, but also rely upon reports from the public, which we are grateful for.

“Don’t toss that bag in the trash or in your curbside bin,” said Julie Findley secretary of KPAB. “Plastic bags and other plastic wraps you get at the store can be recycled through participating grocers and retailers and then given another life as products like outdoor decking, park benches and new bags.” In addition to generating interest in plastic bag recycling, event organizers want the public to know why plastic bags and wraps aren’t usually recycled in municipal curbside programs. “Plastic bags and wraps often require a different type of recycling than plastic bottles and containers. They cannot easily be separated from other recyclables such as cans and
8kts under sail and still being able to mix cocktails or rig scuba gear on a level deck. For those of you not familiar with sailing lingo, the term “point” refers to how close a sailing vessel can sail to the threshold of the wind. Generally, 35 degrees relative is good for a mono hull sailboat. Cruising catarmans are lucky to get 45 degrees, sometimes less. The details of why this is important are probably boring to most. However, if you’re interested in learning more, drop me a line at islandmoononthehook@gmail. com. I’ll be happy to explain in more detail. The picture is our
happen to anyone. Be careful when dealing with gasoline vapors on watercraft. They have a nasty habit of collecting in low points in boat hulls and concentrating. A simple relay contacting can serve as a viable ignition source for these vapors. Take every possible precaution to mitigate vapor concentrations, use blower motors and open hatches to air out compartments whenever possible. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family. I hope his recovery is as speedy as possible. Keep the water on the outside!

The Joint Effort Leisure Ministry (JELM) is selling tickets for its Thanksgiving Dinner. We have this dinner every year at noon on Thanksgiving Day in the Pollock Center, next to the JELM. We ask people to buy their tickets in advance, so we have enough turkey for everyone. We supply turkey,, southern or Yankee dressing, mashed potatoes and soft drinks, coffee or tea. We ask every one to bring a side dish to share with the crowd and their own plates and silverware. This is truly an old fashioned family style meal – reminiscent of the good old days. We do the same thing at Christmas – only we serve ham at Christmas. Volunteers do all of the cooking, serving and clean-up. We are always looking for volunteers. A sign-up sheet for volunteers is on the table at the JELM.
Ann Hodges is teaching Line Dancing until the first of December, when the regular instructor arrives from Canada. Earlier we printed the classes started at 9:15 – but Ann wants to start at 9:30. So we are starting at 9:30. When Pearl gets here from Canada, the classes will start at 9:15. Aerobics has gotten enough people to move their classes over to the Pollock Center. They were using the JELM Library – which they have out-grown. Aerobics meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am – in the Pollock Center. Our address is officially 129 S. Alistair St. Port Aransas. The JELM is located in the Community Presbyterian Church Complex. We make cookies and fresh coffee every day and you are welcome to come in and see what we are about.

As some of you may remember my story was printed in the October 8, 2011 edition of the Padre Island Moon. I was found dying under a tree in Corpus Christi, TX. and the man who saved me called me Hoja which translates to leaf. My story now has taken a turn towards the positive aspect of life and I am very excited, scared, and sad all at the same time. I spent the last month at the VCA Oso Creek Animal Hospital where everyone there took very good care of me. I would like to especially thank Dr. Cozad, Dr. Prewitt, and the entire staff for the care, kindness, and dedication that they showed to me. I will miss them very much. Most of my external injuries have healed, the intestinal parasites, worms, and infections have been pretty well taken care of. I still have the heartworms and I cannot run around as much as I would like to yet because I begin to cough and my lungs still have some fluid in them. But I am on medication for this illness and I have been told that within 30-60 more days I should really
feel better. I did not get spayed because I was still not strong enough to handle the surgery; but that also will be taken care of in the next few weeks. The head injury I suffered has caused my head to lean a little bit to the left, and my vision is still a little off. (I bump into walls a lot and stairs are not my favorite thing either) The vision thing is something that I may have to deal with for a while. No matter; I am still much happier than I was one month ago. So my health is still improving and I have been told that my breed is a very hardy style and I will get better.
I would also like to thank the people who published my story and all the people who read my story in the Moon and were willing to come to my aid. Thank You! It meant a great deal to me and to my caretakers that there are still people out there that will not tolerate this kind of treatment to an animal. We need many more people like this in Corpus Christi, TX. I know that there are many fine establishments in Corpus
