Keep Port Aransas Beautiful is celebrating America Recycles Day on Saturday, Nov. 19, 9am – noon in the Roberts Point Park Pavilion. The event will feature E-Recycling, Plant & Book Swap, Eye Glass and Cell Phone Recycling. Recycle your unwanted computers, computer accessories, monitors, game consoles, printers, scanners, fax machines, small electronics. All working donations will be set aside for the public to retrieve until the event is over. Not accepting TVs or microwaves. Bring plants, trees, cuttings, rootings, seeds and books to share! If you don’t have any extra, come see what is there you need! Come take plant life to beautify the area even if you don’t have anything to swap!

I am the Texas Coordinator for the network. We maintain records of each sea turtle found stranded in Texas and enter each record into a national database. So far this year, more than 2,000 sea turtles have been found stranded in Texas. More

We go almost every year around this time for 10 amazing days of sailing and diving with friends from Ft. Worth. This year we decided to take a catamaran

rather than a traditional mono hull. I think we’re both sold on multihull configurations. Sure, they don’t “point” quite as well as the mono’s and they aren’t nearly as classic looking but there is nothing like making

Boat fire

I’m sure most of yall have heard about the boat fire on The Island several days ago. It was a tragic event which almost took the life of a fellow island resident. He removed some bad fuel from the tanks of his 28’ Carver when the vapors ignited causing a massive explosion. He suffered burns on over 50% of his body and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for further treatment. The boat burned and sank. My company was hired to remove the vessel from the water to prevent any further environmental damage.

Luckily, the lower end of the hull was still fairly intact and it only required lifting bags and pumps to get it floating again. Folks, this kind of accident can

This was the largest cold stunning event recorded since the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network was established in 1980. In my Ph.D. dissertation, I identified that cold stunning was the most significant source of mortality of green turtles in Texas during the 1980s and 1990s, and it remains to be so. This green turtle was decomposed so it was not possible to identify cause of death based on an external examination. It’s head and one flipper were partially detached, which could have occurred due to a boat propeller injury or decomposition. There was no indication that it died due to red tide or cold water temperatures.

Network participants document each turtle on a standardized form, transport live individuals to rehabilitation, and retrieve or bury dead individuals.

A green turtle was found washed ashore in Cole Park this week. KRIS and KIII filmed the turtle and included that footage in their news broadcasts that night and the next day. We have posted a photo of this turtle and linked the two news segments on our Facebook page entitled: Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery. This turtle captured the attention of a lot of people. To some it did not seem like much of a story since more than 1,800 green turtles have been found stranded on the Texas coast so far this year. However, to others, it was an important event. It was the first sea turtle that they saw a sea turtle in person, or on television. The green turtle is federally and state listed as a threatened species in Texas. This turtle was found dead and both young and old were moved by this sad event of an animal perishing while it was still a juvenile.

Stranded sea turtles are found and recorded one at a time. Sea urtle Stranding and Salvage Network participants search for stranded sea turtles, but also rely upon reports from the public, which we are grateful for.

“Don’t toss that bag in the trash or in your curbside bin,” said Julie Findley secretary of KPAB. “Plastic bags and other plastic wraps you get at the store can be recycled through participating grocers and retailers and then given another life as products like outdoor decking, park benches and new bags.” In addition to generating interest in plastic bag recycling, event organizers want the public to know why plastic bags and wraps aren’t usually recycled in municipal curbside programs. “Plastic bags and wraps often require a different type of recycling than plastic bottles and containers. They cannot easily be separated from other recyclables such as cans and

For those of you not familiar with sailing lingo, the term “point” refers to how close a sailing vessel can sail to the threshold of the wind. happen to anyone. Be careful when dealing with gasoline vapors on watercraft. They have a nasty habit of collecting in low points in boat hulls and concentrating. A simple relay contacting can serve as a viable ignition source for these vapors. Take every possible precaution to mitigate vapor concentrations, use blower motors and open hatches to air out compartments whenever possible. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family. I hope his recovery is as speedy as possible. Keep the water on the outside!

The Joint Effort Leisure Ministry (JELM) is selling tickets for its Thanksgiving Dinner. We have this dinner every year at noon on Thanksgiving Day in the Pollock Center, next to the JELM. We ask people to buy their tickets in advance, so we have enough turkey for everyone. We supply turkey,, southern or Yankee dressing, mashed potatoes and soft drinks, coffee or tea. We ask every one to bring a side dish to share with the crowd and their own plates and silverware. This is truly an old fashioned family style meal – reminiscent of the good old days. We do the same thing at Christmas – only we serve ham at Christmas. Volunteers do all of the cooking, serving and clean-up. We are always looking for volunteers. A sign-up sheet for volunteers is on the table at the JELM.

Ann Hodges is teaching Line Dancing until the first of December, when the regular instructor arrives from Canada. Earlier we printed the classes started at 9:15 – but Ann wants to start at 9:30. So we are starting at 9:30. When Pearl gets here from Canada, the classes will start at 9:15. Aerobics has gotten enough people to move their classes over to the Pollock Center. They were using the JELM Library – which they have out-grown. Aerobics meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am – in the Pollock Center. Our address is officially 129 S. Alistair St. Port Aransas. The JELM is located in the Community Presbyterian Church Complex. We make cookies and fresh coffee every day and you are welcome to come in and see what we are about.

As some of you may remember my story was printed in the October 8, 2011 edition of the Padre Island Moon. I was found dying under a tree in Corpus Christi, TX. and the man who saved me called me Hoja which translates to leaf. My story now has taken a turn towards the positive aspect of life and I am very excited, scared, and sad all at the same time. I spent the last month at the VCA Oso Creek Animal Hospital where everyone there took very good care of me. I would like to especially thank Dr. Cozad, Dr. Prewitt, and the entire staff for the care, kindness, and dedication that they showed to me. I will miss them very much. Most of my external injuries have healed, the intestinal parasites, worms, and infections have been pretty well taken care of. I still have the heartworms and I cannot run around as much as I would like to yet because I begin to cough and my lungs still have some fluid in them. But I am on medication for this illness and I have been told that within 30-60 more days I should really

feel better. I did not get spayed because I was still not strong enough to handle the surgery; but that also will be taken care of in the next few weeks. The head injury I suffered has caused my head to lean a little bit to the left, and my vision is still a little off. (I bump into walls a lot and stairs are not my favorite thing either) The vision thing is something that I may have to deal with for a while. No matter; I am still much happier than I was one month ago. So my health is still improving and I have been told that my breed is a very hardy style and I will get better.

I would also like to thank the people who published my story and all the people who read my story in the Moon and were willing to come to my aid. Thank You! It meant a great deal to me and to my caretakers that there are still people out there that will not tolerate this kind of treatment to an animal. We need many more people like this in Corpus Christi, TX. I know that there are many fine establishments in Corpus

By Jay Gardener Well, here we are again loyal readers. Its 4:30pm on Article Deadline Day, and I’m just sitting down to start another gripping edition for this fortnight. Slacker! Haha! First, a clarification. Even though we try to do our research down here at the word factory, we don’t always get it right. Sometimes we’ll misspell “too” for “to” and the PC won’t red-line it. Sometimes we’ll print a report that my cousin Bobby’s ex-girlfriends new boyfriends’ third cousin twice removed saw Harry Truman skateboarding on the seawall. And then sometimes we just flat out just make a gaffe that we didn’t see coming. Last gripping edition I made a reference to our buddy Ranger Buzz at the VC, and then a side note about “not the other guys.” I swung and missed on that one folks. My

Someone pointed out, very obviously, that it could have referred to the “other guys” down at the Seashore. I assure you that isn’t the case, just poor word selection, and in this case, poor abbreviation selection. I appreciate everyone down at the Seashore, from Glenda’s maintenance crew that helps us out at the Big Shell Clean up, to Ranger Buzz (and Chelsea and crew) at the Visitor’s Center educating the masses, the bright smiling faces at the Entrance Station, to Perky and the Rangers protecting us from the bad guys, and Donna Shaver’s tireless efforts and her crew helping restore the worldwide Kemp’s Ridley populations. You are ALL an integral part of what makes PINS what it is. Sorry if y’all caught that and read my words wrong. No harm or foul intended, please don’t hang us up by our toenails.

Tarpon! What I didn’t get wrong the other day was find something really freakin’ cool. Well, at least to me and a few others. I was bombing around on the mid-coast somewhere around the Guadalupe River on a Field trip, and was standing around waiting for an airboat ride out to the marsh to do some habitat characterization. As I was there next to the tiny marina (I dare call it a marina, it was about 20 feet wide and chock-full of alligators) I began to observe some small fish rolling around at the top of the water. One of the guys that were going with me observed my curiosity, and asked the loaded question, “we’ve been catching these fish and we want you to identify them.” He threw the castnet and got one easily, asked “what is this fish?” I didn’t even need to see it close up; I knew what it was the second it popped out of the water. TARPON! About 12 inches long! A juvenile! I slowly let it sink in after snapping a few pictures and releasing the little guy unharmed. A tarpon nursery! Does anyone else know about this? What would the researchers say? How did they get here? Where did they come from? My mind took off spinning out of control as I tried to wrap my brain around how those little guys were there; apparently happy and oblivious to the killer red tide that was decimating everything just a scant mile away out in the bays. I immediately talked to the land manager and got clearance for TPWD to come in and collect a few, which they did. So there’s now a few juvenile tarpon happily swimming around the display tank at Sea Center Texas and we all learned a little. Speaking of the dang red tide. Well, then again, if you can’t say anything nice… One thing that was brought to my attention lately was that the TPWD has come up with several proposals for this year’ changes to our outdoor regulations. One particular proposal is to create a Scientific Area right here in our Backyard. They call it the JFK State Scientific Area, but I think the “Backyard-Don’t-Tear-Up-The-SeagrassArea” sounds much better, LOL. Now I’m going to try and not step in the messy stuff here folks, as I have done in the past, and say “this won’t

affect anything” and “there’s nothing to worry about.” Although that is indeed my first reaction. The idea is to model the area after the Redfish Bay SSA, which has been largely successful in reducing the amount of sea grass scarring in that area. Boaters have claimed to adjust their boating practices while on the water due to the designation. However, I’m not sure we have the same scarring issues as they do up north? Our waters are a little deeper, and there’s not that many “cut-throughs” which typify the areas in Redfish Bay. Besides, I wonder how effective it will be, as I really don’t see too much enforcement anyway. Now, no one likes additional regulations centered on their areas or type of activity. As a shallow skiff owner that spends most of my time in “said” proposed area, logic would dictate that I would be one of the strongest opponents of any changes.

However I don’t exactly feel very threatened for some reason; maybe I’m just giddy its Friday and I need some well-deserved sleep. I think we’ll be fine as long as nothing wild comes out of the proposals, and of course time will tell. I may well recant my position after the scoping meetings are held here, sometime in January. Christi, TX that think the same way you do; I hope you will support them in any way that you can. Now more than ever there are many like me out there that do not have a voice, have the love and warmth of a true friend, and don’t have the ability to get the medical attention that they need. Some of them will never have a chance! Do what you can and think of me; I made it with the help of just one person saying this isn’t right!

Butter-Butts Have Arrived

My caretaker realized that I was a special dog that has gone through some very terrible things. He had to make some difficult decisions for me but we hope that these decisions will help me in the long run. One decision that was made for me was where is the best place for me to go to continue with my recovery and have some professionals really help me adjust to a new lifestyle. We decided that I should go to Spindletop Pit-bull Refuge located in Willis, Texas. It is a difficult place to get into because there are so many pit bulls like me that have been abused and are waiting. They even have tuition so I suppose I will have a student loan when this is over! I was one of the lucky ones to get in on such short notice. Here I will be evaluated both psychologically and physically. Any bad habits that I have they will work with me to eliminate them, and I can learn how to be a good friend to a loving person. This new place sits on 65 acres of land with horses, chickens, ducks, ponds, big trees, and butterflies. I love watching the butterflies! But most importantly I will be with other pit bulls that all have a sad story. There are former fighters, unwanted litters, and gals just like me used to make puppies. Spindletop is a nokill shelter and I can stay as long as I need too. I will be matched with a “boyfriend” and we will become the best of partners. In the meantime for the next few weeks I get to live in the big house while I continue to recuperate.

Well, migration has occurred and there are lots of cool birds around. The “butter-butts” are here (yellow-rumped warblers) and the peregrines are harassing the doves in my neighborhood. I was really surprised to see that during this past warmtrend that I still had two humming birds coming to my feeders. Pretty late for them. Watch your feeders carefully; the red-wing blackbirds will clean you out in a morning’s sitting. The golden-fronted woodpeckers are still eating half an orange a day. Those guys are pretty loud and obnoxious for being really shy birds. I even have a kiskadee still hanging around. The duck hunters are enjoying the birds for sure; I’m being woken most mornings to the blasting, which is fine by me. It usually gives me my first laugh of the day when I hear three, slow, even-tempo shots, “Boom! Boom! Boom!” which typically means the hunter emptied his pump shotgun and missed the duck. When you hear single shots or just two close together shots and then nothing is when you have a good idea that a kill was made. Anyhoo folks, thanks for reading. The sad part for me is leaving the man, his family, and the people of Corpus Christi that did reach out to me. I hope that maybe someday I can come back to Corpus Christi and be adopted by a family that will truly love and care for me. Dee-Scoveries

No Plot? No Problem? By Devorah Fox devorahfox@aol.com Ah, November in Port Aransas. Most Port Aransans are preparing for big Thanksgiving Day dinners, building Christmas gift lists, planning holiday celebrations and possibly turning on the heat instead of the air conditioning for the first time since last winter. But for us writerly types, the month of November has an entire different significance. It’s NaNoWriMo — National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo challenges participants to write 50,000 words (about 175 pages) between Nov. 1 and 11:59:59 p.m. on Nov. 30. The novel can be any genre, in any language. There is no prize for winning, except for bragging rights. In fact, you have to buy your own “Winner” T-shirt. There’s absolutely no guarantee that the novel will ever be published (although quite a few have). A NaNoWriMo novel isn’t even long enough to interest most publishers. Although there have been successful novels that are roughly 50,000 words long, most commercial novels run from 65,000 to 100,000 words or more. So why do it? For many people who have always wanted to write a novel, NaNoWriMo is the kick in the pants they need to get going. The community that grows around the effort gives encouragement and the deadline provides motivation to keep going. For many, it’s such a satisfying experience that they participate every year. NaNoWriMo is organized by the Office of Letters and Light to encourage creativity. The OLL, a 501©(3) non –profit organization, also organizes Script Frenzy in April, the Young Writers Program for K-12 students and now Camp NaNoWriMo, another writing marathon that takes place in the summer. The first NaNoWriMo was held in July, 1999. Twenty-one writers in the San Francisco Bay area participated. The following year, the challenge was moved to November to “more fully take advantage of the miserable weather” in that area, according to founding organizer Chris Baty. Last year, there were over 200,000 participants from around the world. More than 30,000 of them crossed the 50K finish line by the midnight deadline. And yes, I was one of them. I wrote 50,062 words in 30 days. I got there by writing 1667 words, every day. Including Saturdays, Sundays and Thanksgiving Day. While running a business, authoring a blog at http://devorahfox.com AND writing the “Dee-Scoveries” column for the Island Moon. I won’t say they were great words. I even skipped entire chapters, leaving myself virtual sticky notes that read “something happens here” and went on to write what I did know was going to happen. I met the deadline, even though I had yet to write the ending. That was perfectly OK. After all, NaNoWriMo’s slogan is “No Plot? No Problem!” The point of NaNoWriMo isn’t to arrive at the finish line with a fully fashioned, perfectly crafted novel. Most NaNoWriMo writers end up with what they consider to be a very robust outline. Dr. Tom The Hunt Little Man Style The boys of fall are finally done with their respective seasons. It is nice to put a little breathing room in the daily routine. In the Dorrell household that doesn’t really mean we slow down it just means we switch gears. The last couple of weeks have been the annual work weekends at Hebbronville and Brackettville ranches. Preparing each for the hunting season is a beast of a job. This means getting feeders functional, filled up and timers running correctly. It means brushing in blinds, setting up new blinds and coming to work on Mondays with rancher’s hands and arms that look like they were in a knife fight. The only perk is that we will put in a hunt early and late. Long days and early mornings prevail literally daylight to dark and then some…. I was prepared this year with both a new longbow and a new compound. I like to use the compounds out of pop ups due to their effect on my depth perception with a long bow. The rest of the time I play Indian. Clint of course plays Indian all the time and he is pretty good at it, last year when he was 13 he killed a 170s class whitetail. I can’t touch that. This year the number 2 son, Coop, is doing his first bow hunt for deer. He successfully killed a javi with his bow when he was 6 which is startling but then he killed a pig with it last year when he was 7 to prove the first was no fluke. Frankly he harvests rabbits with regularity so I felt he was ready. I have learned a great deal about arrow penetration with my 2 sons over the last few years. In fact Clint did his science fair project on it a few years ago when he was only 9 and harvested his first deer with a bow. The key is a heavy arrow with small diameter carbon and

a very sharp 2 bladed broad head that reduces friction, this results in great penetration without heavy force. This is the ticket for young guns with short draw lengths. Number 2 prepared for his task mightily this fall practicing frequently for the 10 to 12 yard opportunity that would soon come. Last Saturday I dropped him off at his ground blind and snuck off nearby. He was instructed to look for a good doe preferably one that his brother had lightly scratched at another blind that am. While I sat nearby and relaxed watching the wildlife show with stick in hand I wondered if he could really pull it off at the ripe old age of eight. I was shocked when his brother did it at 9 and Coop is bigger than his bro was at 8 which means more draw length and more weight. His arrow weighs in at 500 grains and is shaving sharp. After the sun set I eased over to him in the electric buggy. I had not seen him shoot but the smile and fist pump said it all. That hug you get from your boy after a big moment like that is one of the purest things in the world and is hard to replicate. We went and got Hank the tracking dog and mom. When we got to the house Clint already had his doe hung and skinned having done dirt early. We went to the scene of the crime and Hank went right to her, of course yours truly was convinced from the story of the little hunter that the doe went left when of course she went right. This delayed our prize for a little while and gave number 2 a real taste of the bow hunter’s blues but with the help of hank we prevailed and found his doe about 70 yards from the blind. The shot a perfect 10 ring with double penetration. The best part is it was the exact doe he was sent to harvest. What a great way to start the season Little Man style! Never doubt what young people can accomplish with a little discipline and responsibility.

cold stunned turtles are not found and protected quickly, they typically die due to exposure or predation. We can reduce the number of green turtles that are killed by searching for them during these cold weather events. Unfortunately, most weather forecasts that I have heard predict another cold winter. We are preparing for another cold stunning event. If it does not happen this year, it is just a “matter of time” before another large event occurs. The juvenile green turtle population is increasing in Texas. Save the Date for Cold Stunning Training From 10:00 am to noon on Saturday December 3, we will hold a training session to inform people how they can help us find and save cold stunned green turtles. If these turtles are found and brought to rehabilitation quickly, they can be saved and released as soon as waters warm. The training will be held in the Briscoe King Pavilion on North Padre Island. It will be open to people who want to volunteer with the Padre Island National Seashore Sea Turtle Program, as well as to the general public. You do not need to sign up in advance to attend. Update on Smokey I want to update you on the travels of Smokey, an adult green turtle that we are tracking by satellite telemetry. Smokey is the first adult green turtle to be tracked in Texas. Tony Amos and some citizens rescued her and named her Smokey, after a special person in their lives. Her travels can be viewed on-line by going to www.seaturtle.org/. Click on the Track A Turtle tab, scroll down the programs listed on the left side of the page to find the Padre Island National Seashore Green Sea Turtle Tracking Program, and click on Smokey (47525) and you will be able to view her movements. After being outfitted with the transmitter and released on June 19, Smokey traveled southward to near the U.S./Mexico border. She then swam across the Gulf of Mexico and around the tip of Florida to the Atlantic Ocean. She spent more than a month in waters near the Bahamas, including when Hurricane Irene passed over. She then made a large loop in the Atlantic Ocean. Most recently, she entered nearshore waters off the southeastern coast of Florida and has headed south. I hope that her transmitter will continue to function so that we can see if she reenters the Gulf of Mexico.

Month Of November Helps Recognize Veterans The month of November serves as an occasion for our country and the State of Texas to recognize the service of our men and women. In this week’s article, I would like to take the opportunity to support our veterans and specifically focus on how Texas strives to continue to thank them for their invaluable service. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, 1,693,800 veterans call the State of Texas home. Many veterans choose to live here because Texas is one of the leading states in the country when it comes to providing assistance to veterans. Texas veterans are able to utilize numerous resources and programs which are provided through the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) and the Veterans Land Board (VLB). The TVC was established in 1927 as the State Service Office and tasked with assisting our state’s veterans. The mission of the TVC has always been to act as the state appointed advocate of Texas veterans as they attempt to secure the benefits rightfully earned in exchange for their service in our nation’s armed forces. They are able to provide this assistance using four programs: • Claims Representation and Counseling serves veterans, their dependents and survivors, in all matters pertaining to veterans’ disability benefits and rights. It is the designated agency of the state of Texas to represent the State and its veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). • Veterans Employment Services offers employment services to Texas veterans and helps employers find qualified veteran job applicants. The goal of these services is to match veteran job seekers with the best employment opportunities available. • Veterans Education Program approves all programs for federal educational benefits. Through an approval process, the Texas Veterans Commission ensures that institutions and employers are in compliance with federal guidelines and are qualified to provide the type of training offered.

In addition to the aforementioned programs and services, the Texas Legislature and the citizens of Texas in recent years have voted on and approved several measures which have expanded upon the assistance these and other state agencies can offer. This year the 82nd Legislature unanimously passed Senate Joint Resolution 14, which is a proposed amendment on the November 8th ballot, to the Texas Constitution which would extend the 100% disabled veterans property tax exemption to surviving spouses.

ronnienarmour@gmail.com Happy Thanksgiving boys and girls. As we lope into the holidays, I hope the year has been as good to you as it has been to me. I have much to be thankful for. The Island Moon has nearly made it through 2011 (with me riding their coat tails every step of the way) and we have nothing but bigger and better plans for 2012 as we go weekly in January. I’m going to stay bi-monthly with this column but will be stretching out in other areas. I hope you’ll stay tuned. I have some sad news in the musical community. Blues icon, Doyle Bramhall, Sr. passed away at the age of 62 at his home in Alpine, Texas last Sunday. Bramhall was a singing drummer and songwriter originally from Oak Cliff. The story goes that when Doyle was playing with such early Dallas bands as The Chessmen and Storm, the guitarist, Jimmy Vaughan’s, kid brother would hang around and watch them practice. That kid brother, a fledgling Stevie Ray Vaughan, imitated Bramhall’s voice and did pretty well for himself. Bramhall wrote Life By the Drop which SRV recorded as his sober anthem. The late Clifford Antone, The Godfather of Austin Blues, said of Bramhall, “As much as Stevie’s guitar style came from Albert King, his voice came from Doyle.” Heaven done called another blues singer back home…RIP Doyle Bramhall. But right now, time’s a wasting. Let’s roll…

Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros (Austin, TX) played the Tarpon Ice House on November 4th. When I go to a show, I always feel it is my job to try to describe the performance to everyone who wasn’t there. The problem is adjectives like awesome, fantastic or great just don’t quite measure up to what I observed. This show was one of those experiences where I found myself absolutely consumed by the music. Here’s why… First of all, there’s Walt Wilkins. His songs are warm, passionate and musically dynamic. And, he doesn’t just front the band; he shares the stage

321 N A li st er night. It’s the perfect beach bar.” At the Tarpon show, all of the Mystiqueros vocalists took front man duties on occasion and harmonized on every occasion. Not since the Shoemaker Brothers or The Trishas have I heard voices compliment each other so well. I was drawn in on every single note of every single song. I watched this show with a group of my friends who, after each song, just looked at each other in amazement and muttered stuff like, “Oh my God. Can you believe this?” In my mind, every one of the Mystiqueros is a star and every song they play deserves a Grammy. This was one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. The energy was off the charts.

Alejandro Escovedo I found myself in Austin last week and caught Alejandro Escovedo (Austin, TX) at one of his resident Tuesday night gigs at the Continental Club. Escovedo had just released his 14th solo record since 1992 (entitled Street Songs of Love). Typically each Tuesday he uses the Continental to showcase new songs and experiment with arrangements on stage. It’s a kind of interactive work in progress. I’ve been a fan of Escovedo since the 80’s and often went to see his old punk bands, Rank and File and The True Believers. His 2006 CD, The Boxing Mirror (produced by John Cale) is one of my favorite albums of all time. His music sometimes whispers the soft breath of a haunted muse, sometimes rages like a soul on fire; always bending genres and flooding the senses. Seeing this show at the Continental meant a lot to me.

DO NOT MISS LIST Lil’ Brian & the Zydeco Travelers Lil’ Brian Terry & the Zydeco Travelers (Barrett Station, TX) will play Dr. Rockits on Friday, November 25th. East Texas, from up around Baytown to Port Arthur, is right in the middle of Texas Zydeco country. The Creole people of this part of the country, most with strong Louisiana roots, are at least as ardent about Zydeco as their neighbors across the border in Louisiana. Brian Terry grew up listening to the music of Clifton and C.J. Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Buckwheat Zydeco and John and Geno Delafose. He is a virtuoso of both the large piano note accordion and the old-style diatonic accordion and is serious about showing how this instrument can be as hip as any in contemporary music. “There are no limits to this music,” says Lil’ Brian. “I love the roots of Zydeco. My greatest joy is to take Zydeco roots and combine them with today’s beat to make it my music.” The Zydeco Travelers played clubs I ran in San Antonio and I will attest YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS SHOW! Bring your dancing shoes. Aayeee!

Nine time Grammy winner Ray Benson will bring his Texas iconic swing outfit, Asleep At the Wheel (Austin, TX), to the Brewster Street Ice House on Saturday, December 3rd. The Wheel has been around since 1970 and has pumped out over 25 albums, charting more than 20 singles on the Billboard country charts. Not since Bob Wills has western swing ever sounded so good.

As if that weren’t enough, the adorable Trishas (Austin, TX) will open the show. Jamie Wilson, Kelley Mickwee, Liz Foster and Savannah Welch (daughter of Kevin Welch) put out a harmony the world hasn’t heard since the Andrew’s Sisters. I caught this act at the Third Coast Theater in Port A last year and was blown away. It’s only a little over two weeks away, so make your plans now NOT TO MISS THIS SHOW. It will be great…guaranteed!

When I got to the club, people were lined up around the block. Escovedo has always been embraced by Hip City purists. The stage plot for his latest production is sans strings, opting for two guitars, bass, drums and backup singers in lieu of cellos and violins. Walt Wilkins and the Mistiqueros played the Tarpon Ice House on Nov. 4th with the other musicians. At no point did I get the impression this was “The Walt Wilkins Show”. It was a total band experience who just happened to be playing Walt Wilkins’ songs (for the most part). And, the musicians he surrounded himself with were not only incredible players, they all had great voices which, at times, allowed for amazing five part harmonies. The Mystiqueros consisted of Walt’s wife, Tina Wilkins, on vocals, Bill Small on bass and vocals, Corby Schaub on lead guitar and lap steel, Ray Rodriquez on drums, Brian Langlinais on lead guitar and vocals, and the show stopping Jimmy “Daddy” Davis on acoustic guitar and vocals. Wilkins has recorded five solo records and had dozens of his songs recorded by the likes of Eric Church, Kenny Rogers, Pat Green and Ricky Skaggs. He played in Pat Green’s band for about a year in 2000. The Mystiqueros were formed after Wilkins moved back to Texas from Nashville in 2006. In 2007 they recorded with storied producer, Lloyd Maines, spawning their first big Texas radio hit, Trains I Missed. Wilkins told me, “This band has always been unique, being that each member writes and sings and has made their own records. We have dozens and dozens of songs to choose from each night and no two nights are ever the same. Port A is the perfect place in Texas to feel like you’re escaping. Playing the Tarpon Ice House was a great, wild

is new to the band. The two backup singers (“the angels”), Gina Holton and Leila Henley, also played in the band, Sweet Meat, which followed Escovedo’s set. I wasn’t familiar with his new material but I loved it. The only song I did recognize was from his Boxing Mirrors CD: I Like Her Better (When She Walks Away), and it drew the crowd into a sing-along. His encore number, Miss You, from the Rolling Stones’ Some Girls album, rocked the house. Although he only played about ten songs, this show was pure magic. It was worth the five hour drive and 45 minutes standing in line. I might do it again next Tuesday.
