U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service casts doubt on claim of 23 whooping crane deaths in 2009 Confirms the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s position This month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declined to confirm the claim of multiple whooping crane deaths that prompted a 2008 lawsuit between an environmental group, The Aransas Project, and the state of Texas and other organizations. The lawsuit claimed that mismanagement of state water rights by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had caused the deaths of 23 endangered whooping cranes at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The USFWS responses were released during a hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources. The USFWS wrote, “Following the retirement of the service’s Whooping Crane Coordinator in 2011, a team of specialists was formed to evaluate our process for estimating the whooping crane population. After an extensive review, the team updated the methodology used for estimating whooping crane abundance. Use of this scientifically sound methodology has improved our knowledge and understanding of the whooping crane population and will aid in conservation planning, future policy decisions, and the long-term conservation of this species for the American public. However, the service is unable to confirm the loss of whooping cranes previously reported in 2008-2009, because the data could not be verified using the previous methodology. Therefore, the number of whooping cranes that died at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge during the winter of 2008-2009 remains unknown.” Throughout the trial and subsequent appeals, the TCEQ presented wildlife experts who disputed the plaintiff’s claim that 23 whooping cranes had died. “We are pleased to have this independent, scientific confirmation of the position we took throughout the legal proceedings,” Bryan W. Shaw, Ph.D., P.E., chairman of the TCEQ, said. “The TCEQ already has programs in place that take into account wildlife that depends on stream flows. In addition, had this suit stood, it would have seriously disrupted Texas’ existing water rights laws.” The plaintiffs in the lawsuit sued Dr. Shaw and the other two TCEQ commissioners in the suit in their official capacity, as well as other parties. In a June 30, 2014 decision, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit agreed with defendants that the plaintiff failed to prove its case that diversions of water for use by Texans had led to multiple deaths of federally protected whooping cranes in the winter of 2008.

Greetings From Frostbite Falls

Winter Texan Round-Up goes to help fund KPAB projects. It is free to hold a sale at your home or business, although KPAB will accept monetary donations for KPAB. Deadline to register to be in papers is noon, Friday, Jan. 29; to be on maps noon, Wednesday, Feb. 3. Contact Pam Greene at 361-749-4158 or pamg@cityofportaransas.org to list your sale. Individuals, organizations and businesses are invited to participate. “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Re-purpose” and keep it out of the landfill is the perpetual theme of Parks and Recreation and KPAB annual event.

Betty and Bert discover why bears sleep all winter By Frostbite Betty Well it turns out that our eager cold weather outdoor invigorating daily exercise stimulates a lively appetite. And not for salad with fat free dressing. It’s the lumberjack food we want, waffles with local maple syrup and hand rolled butter from a Wisconsin organic cow. And the hearty sandwiches of Scandinavian home cured meat from our local butcher (Larsson) with dairyland cheese on Bert’s tasty home made bread.

5th Annual Hobby Day Whatever you do in your spare time can be shown off at the Port A Parks and Recreation 5th Annual Hobby Day. It will be held from 10am to 1pm on Monday, Feb. 8, at the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St. Bring what you make or do to show off and sell. Contact Pam Greene at 749-4158 or pamg@cityofportaransas to reserve a spot. Tell your friends, so they can participate too.

Interval Training Get fit by participating in High Intensity Training in short spurts for all ages/levels. Three classes each on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 7am, noon and 5:15pm (no 5:15 on Fridays) are offered by Port Parks and Recreation. Classes are held in different places, so contact certified trainer Karen Decker at 361903-0901 for location of the classes you want. Cost is $3 per class or $30 for 15 classes. Cash or check to City of Port Aransas (COPA). All classes are open to men and women. Bring mat and water. Pickleball

Frostbite Betty and Bert are putting on some fat for winter. Meanwhile, Bert is making rib sticking banana bread with walnuts. Then he says we’d better see if we can’t find some fried shrimp, since that is what our Winter Texan conditioned bodies are built for at this time of year. And then it turns out there is enough rhubarb left in the freezer for a pie. Ok, so by now you can see those belly rolls piling up like a stack of used tires at the fixit shop. Yes indeed. By spring we will be rolypoly. And here is where the Bears come out ahead: they eat nothing, zero, nada all winter, and then wake up in April all skinny, in bear terms anyway. And ready for grubs. Spring for Frostbite Fallers is about grub too, a highlight being the season opener of World’s Best Donuts. I guess we are in training. Then there is the technique of continuously eating until the food runs out, which we observe weekly in the horse yard. Those big shaggy picturesque beasts bump and nudge each other around the hay ring until it’s gone. Takes about three days to go through one of those big round bales. Then Marco, the horse guy, makes them wait a day until the next one. Meanwhile Eddie, the mischief seeking pony, walks over the wire, and the long way around up the driveway to the stockpile and keeps eating. On the other hand, maybe I will read up on my kale recipes. Or maybe a cookbook is in the works: Filling Food From Frostbite Falls. Youbetcha. Y’all eat hearty now. Cheers from Betty n Bert

Roundup: 2016 is now upon us and its time to settle in with our Winter Texan neighbors for another glorious season on the sunny Gulf Coast. Mia Needs Help

My name is Mia and I am the definition of a total sweetheart! When I was rescued along the side of a road by a kind lady from Mission Pawsible, I had an old injury to my right front leg. I don’t really remember what happened to me when I was little but the veterinarians said my leg had been badly injured and the bones and growth plate had healed improperly therefore I would need surgery. As I grow, the deformity can cause problems with my other bones and the discomfort will increase. Even in spite of my floppy leg, I am still very happy and energetic and I LOVE to play with my foster siblings. I guess you could say I am very “Happy Go Lucky” because now I am loved, safe and well cared for. After the surgery, I look forward to finding my forever home and being able to romp and play with a forever family. I am only 1 1/2 years young so have a lot of great years ahead of me! If you would like to donate to help towards Mia’s upcoming surgery in San Antonio next week, we offer the convenience of Paypal on our website missionpawsiblecc.org. email: info@missionpawsiblecc.org Phone: 361-4439492 - 361-277-1731 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ missionpawsiblecc Thank you very much for reading about Mia. Senior Moments By Dotson Lewis

Two True Stories

Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: A dear friend of mine who is a WWII Veteran sent these two stories to me. I couldn’t resist using them as a part of this week’s Senior Moments article. I believe that you, the “Moon Monkeys,” will find them as interesting and moving as I did. Following the two stories, please check out the information about the Nueces County “Veterans Information Meeting” scheduled for February 6th. Hope to see all of you Veterans or those of you who have concerns about Veterans at the meeting.

Story Number One Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn’t famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed “Easy Eddie.” He was Capone’s lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie’s skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time.

Lt. Butch O’Hare-1942 The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn’t reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet.

Easy Eddie O’Hare and FDR To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well... Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object.

And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn’t give his son; he couldn’t pass on a good name or a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al “Scarface” Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some resemblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie’s life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine. The poem read: “The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still.”

Story Number Two World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O’Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific.

Barefoot Mardi Gras Parade Rules RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING 2016 BAREFOOT MARDI GRAS PARADE

1. Parade line-up and staging will begin Saturday, February 6, 2016 at (9:00AM) at Whitecap Blvd and Windward Dr. Parade to start at 11AM. Other than the lead float, color guard and our childrenÕs charities, all parade entries will appear in order of arrival at the staging location. The parade will begin by proceeding East down Whitecap to the beach. Once on the beach the parade will turn South towards Bob Hall Pier. The parade will end by turning West into the circle at the Briscoe King Pavilion. Floats that would like to stay on display at the Barefoot Mardi Gras Festival will receive 6 admission tickets. Floats on display must stay in place until 5pm. All other floats not staying for the festival may park along side roads where available or disburse after the parade. Float owners are solely responsible for removal of their float and float related trash from the parking lot. DO NOT dispose of float trash or materials in the ParkÕs Department parking lot. All floats cannot be higher than 20Õ due to over head lines. 2. All participants operating motorized vehicles must provide Barefoot Mardi Gras with proof of auto liability insurance by including a copy of their insurance card with their application. 3. A mandatory Parade Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 4 at 6pm at Schlitterbahn. One Krewe member must be present to participate on 2/6/16 4. All entries must be decorated for a family atmosphere and constructed in a safe manner and not present a health or safety hazard to the contestants or the general public. Pulling units must be decorated and should be made as much a part of the float as possible.

One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet.

Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber’s blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O’Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier... Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return... The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch’s daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy’s first Ace of WWII, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honor. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O’Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. So, the next time you find yourself at O’Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch’s memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It’s located between Terminals 1 and 2. * The Medal of Honor is one of only two United States military awards suspended from a neck ribbon. The other is the Legion of Merit Dotson’s Other Note: So what do these two stories have to do with each other? Butch O’Hare was “Easy Eddie’s” son. In keeping the facts factual, Butch never lived in Chicago. His home was St. Louis, MO. These two stories caused me to do quite a lot of research. There are many conflicting stories about how Butch’s father died…it appears that no matter how it/ what happened, Scarface was behind it. It’s great to hear that you read, and disagree or agree with what I write; thank you for your comments. Please call or Email. Phone: 361949-7681; Email: dlewis1@stx.rr.com The next Veterans Roundtable Meetings will be Tuesday, January 26, 9-11 AM, in Room 126, Del Mar College, Center For Economic Development, 3209 S. STATE Tourism in The Coastal Bend By Todd Hunter, District 32

Tourism is a booming industry in the state of Texas. This is especially true in the Coastal Bend, which ranks as the sixthmost visited destination in the state (out of 26 metropolitan statistical areas). In 2014 alone, over $70.6 billion was directly spent on travel in throughout Texas, a 4.7 percent increase over 2013. Tourism directly supported 630,000 jobs across a variety of sectors, representing a 3.3 percent increase from the previous year. With the busy spring travel season approaching, and summer not far behind it, I want to take the opportunity to discuss tourism and travel, which are important economic engines for the Coastal Bend region. In 2015, the Economic Development & Tourism Division in the Office of the Governor released a new travel report on the Corpus Christi Metropolitan Statistical Area (Corpus Christi and Port Aransas). In specific, the report described the 2014 visitor trends to the three counties that make up this area: Aransas, Nueces, and San Patricio. According to the report, 89.6% of visitors to the area in 2014 were Texans, which made the Corpus Christi/Port Aransas area one of the top three tourist destinations for in state travel alongside Houston and San Antonio. Meanwhile, the state saw the greatest number of out-of-state visitors originating from Omaha, Nebraska, ColoradoPueblo Springs, Colorado, and Portland, Oregon in 2014. In 2015, the top three nonTexan visitor origins included Monterey-Salinas (Mexico), Hartford & New Haven, Connecticut, and Omaha, Nebraska The report also outlined the different activity categories in which visitors to the Corpus Christi/Port Aransas area participated. As you might expect, our beaches are enormous assets to our region and the Coastal Bend – 45.1% of activities could be attributed to the ‘Nature’ category, including beach/waterfront, wildlife viewing, and parks. ‘Outdoor Sports’, which includes fishing, hiking, and water sports, was also extremely popular – accounting for 17.0% of stays. According to the Governor’s Office report, 32.6 % of the activities in which visitors engaged fell within the ‘Culture’ category, which included trips to historic sites, touring and sightseeing, and visiting museums and art

exhibits. This figure was at 26.7% the previous year. The ‘Libation/Culinary’ category, which includes culinary/dining experiences and winery/distillery/brewery tours, represented 17.3% of visits. The average length of the stay was 2.3 days – longer than last year. Visitors traveling by automobile accounted for 91.8% of the method of travel, while 6.0% traveled by air for an average distance traveled of 263 miles. The Governor’s Office report also included demographic profiles of visitors to our area. The average age of visitors was 44.9 years old. 18-34 year olds accounted for 30.2% of visits, 35-49 year olds accounted for 32.6%, 55-64 year olds for 22.5%, and 65+ years for 14.7%. The average household income of visitors was $79,905, and the average visitor spent $110.80/ per day. These facts and figures can be found at www.travel.texas.gov. If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at http://www.house. state.tx.us/. Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Barefoot Mardi Gras… The good news is, I don’t have any dead guy to write about this week. I’m starting to feel like that raven on the fence. The other good news is (and I consider myself the good news messenger) it’s almost Fat Tuesday and time for everyone’s favorite party, Mardi Gras. It comes early this year. Down here you get a double dose. For starters, this will be the 7th year for the Barefoot Mardi Gras Parade on N. Padre. Around 11 am on Saturday, February 6th, you can go to the beach near Bob Hall Pier and see one of the world’s only (if not THE only) Mardi Gras

and a horn section… enough said. Band leader and founder, Jim Beal, had this to say, “Barefoot Mardi Gras is a natural ball, has been from downbeat the first year we played it. Originally it felt like a grown-up frat party in a WW II artillery bunker. At Schlitterbahn there’s more elbow room but people still come to party and so does Ear Food.” Prepare to dance and revel ‘til the cows come home. This is one world class partay.

The Flying Balalaika Brothers will play the Vino Mio Social Club on Friday.

Fun at Shorty’s last weekend.

Port A Mardi Gras Parade. Photo by Miles Merwin Fat Tuesday in Port A… The Barefoot Mardi Gras Parade. Parade actually parading down the beach and everyone is barefooted. You get the picture. My cohorts at your Island Moon always rise to the occasion with some sort of bonkers theme and this year I’m told it will amaze you. I’m also told I can’t spill the beans yet. Here’s a hint: me and Dale will be the ones wearing Army helmets. And, as is tradition, there will be a world class party following that evening with the rockin’ roots-blues-zydeco-party band, Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra, to be held at Schlitterbahn this year. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 20 years of so, Earfood is a musical institution from San Antonio who demands a rockin’ good time. They play an array of monkey songs which stir the soul. Led by the smallest member of the band, the little ax, Miss Neesie Beal, can belt out a ripping soul number like a woman possessed. The band features an accordionist

And on the following Tuesday, February 9, (make that Fat Tuesday) which is Mardi Gras proper, the festivities move up the road to Port A. Port Aransas is a town that takes it’s Mardi Gras seriously. According to founder of the parade and the Port Aransas Leisure Society (PALS), Janet “Planet” Calvert, this is the 20th year for annual parade and I can attest, they just get better and better every year. The first time I asked Janet Planet about the Mardi Gras Parade in Port A (about 8 years ago), she was driving to New Orleans to buy beads and was

on the causeway between Lafayette and NOLA and didn’t know me… and she was grumpy and I could tell, didn’t want to be bothered. She couldn’t figure out who I was and why was I asking her these stupid questions. But through the years we’ve become good friends so it’s a little easier (though not much) to get her to talk to me on record. Here are Janet’s words of wisdom this year, “We have been parading around port Aransas for 20 years now! I owe all the success to everyone who has participated. It must be thousands by now. With the help of the PALS this has become a great success. I believe that it is because this is a parade for the people, by the people. Happy Mardi Gras y’all! Laissez les bon temps roulez!” All of the festivities begin at the Gaff where the floats will line up around 3 PM. The parade starts at 5:00. I know Giggity’s has a killer funk band that night, FunkaSaurus Tex, from San Antonio. So dig those beads out and let the good times roll.

The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last weekend The Independent Theives… I happened in to a special night at Shorty’s last Saturday. I guess I should have realized it before hand since the Independent Thieves (Corpus

DO NOT MISS LIST There’s a ton of good talent heading our way this weekend. Songbird and Winter Texan fave, Carol Elliott will play an early show at the Drop Anchor on Friday. I understand they are pulling out all the Winter Texan stops with a daily array of “All You Can Eat” specials including shrimp, flounder and wings and cheap drinks. Billy Snipes will perform the next night and I understand he lost a football bet, so expect to see him on stage in a Bronco’s cheerleading outfit. Also on Friday, the real deal old school blues and R&B band, Duke E. Brown, will play Giggity’s and one of the stand outs from the Corpus Christi Songwriters group, Buddy Trevino, will play Shorty’s. And at the very cool Vino Mio Social Club in Corpus, the Flying Balalaika Brothers (Austin, TX) will perform what they describe as a “Slavic Dance Party” with everything from Russian folk to bluegrass. I may have to make that show. I like what those guys are doing at Vino Mio. On Saturday, Mike Milligan and Texiana Blues will play Giggity’s and Ty Dietz will play Shorty’s with slide guitar wizard Tony Saracene. On the horizon, watch for shows by James Little, Terri Hendrix, Matt Hole, Picklefish, Jerry Diaz and the Toman Brothers. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there.

The owners or the Ice House, Paul Fain and Dede Smith were there, as were a large contingency of friends and fans. This band is also a favorite of mine. They play a wide variety of folk music and sing along faves. It’s melodic and comfortable. The lead singer, Garrett Wieland, is also the host of the NPR show, Some Call It Folk. He is accompanied by David King on mandolin and smokin’ acoustic guitar and Derek Galvan on bass. I can’t say enough good things about these guys. Go check ‘em out.
