Jake continued from A1

Jake loves the beach but he has an allergy that causes him to break out when he goes there and has to have three baths when he gets home so he doesn’t get to go as often as he might like. Unlucky dog.

But Jake is a happy guy and likes to chase his rope so Dave and the neighbors fling the rope at the street sign in front of their house on Dasmarinas to see who can get it to hang up there; we Islanders will wager on anything. Jake loves the game because he plays Center Field and brings back the errant tosses – which are just about all of them according to Dave. Lucky Dog. But after a few years of this game Jake, like many jocks, who is now six started to wear down and blew out an ACL and had to have surgery on his leg and a metal plate was put in. Unlucky dog. Then two years ago Jake went off his feed and started losing weight. By the time Dave and Patti were able to figure out what was wrong Jake had lost 30% of his body weight and things weren’t looking good for Jake. But it just so happened that Dave and Patti’s neighbor knew a guy who knew a guy and Jake went off to San Antonio where they figured out what was wrong, a digestive problem, and before long Jake was back chasing his rope in the front yard. Lucky dog.

Sciences school at Texas A&M, not to enroll just to get checked out, where the doctors knew something was terribly wrong but couldn’t be sure until they got tests results back which would take three to four days; but Jake was sinking fast and treatment couldn’t wait that long so the doctors there made an educated guess which turned out to be exactly right. Lucky dog. In spite of not being able to find any sign of an open wound on him the doctors determined Jake had contacted a flesh eating bacteria which was in the process of killing him. They first thought they could save him by amputating his leg where the bacteria had started. But after seven separate surgeries they determined that the fast-moving bacteria had moved up his sciatic nerve and removing his leg wouldn’t stop the spread. Oh man, really unlucky dog. But the good news was that the doctors had guessed right even before they got the test results back and the anti-biotics they had been giving him were working. Jake spent two weeks getting treatment at the university and now he is back on his Island playing with his rope with nothing to show for the wear and tear except a funny haircut. “We thought about changing his name to Lucky,” Dave says. The doctors still aren’t sure exactly how the bacteria found its way into Jake’s body; there were no cuts or abrasions, it could have come from him running through plants with sharp needles, or even from something as small as a sandbur. “This disease in dogs is exceedingly rare,” Dr. Christi said. “This is the first case I can recall.” No matter what, considering where Jake started and where he is today with Dave and Patti and living on The Island, you got to admit he’s one lucky dog.

Jake was back on his Island and a happy guy again until the Monday after Thanksgiving when once again he started losing weight. Pretty soon Jake couldn’t put weight on the same back leg where the plate was located but that didn’t seem to be the problem; plus he was losing weight again. It was a mystery and pretty soon things weren’t looking so good for Jake. Unlucky dog. Then Jake went to Dr. Christi Kresser at the Animal Hospital of Padre Island and she had idea what the problem might be but more tests were needed to make sure so Jake went to College Station to the Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical

All Combat Roles Now Open to Women, Part III

By Dotson Lewis

Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: For reasons unknown, last week’s article “Women In Combat Part II, began in mid-sentence. Here is the corrected first paragraph. The words which were omitted are underlined. Women are often great shooters but can’t run in 50-80 lbs of gear as long, hard, or fast as men. Military training is hard enough on men’s bodies; it’s harder on women’s. And until women stop menstruating, there will always be an uphill battle for staying level and strong at all times. No one wants to talk about the fact that in the days before a woman’s cycle, she loses half her strength, to say nothing of the emotional ups and downs that could affect judgment. And how would you like fighting through PMS symptoms while clearing a town or going through a firefight? Then there are the logistics of making all the accommodations for women in the field, from stopping the convoy to pee or because her cycle started, to stripping down to get hosed off after having to go into combat with full MOP gear when there’s a biological threat.

Changing Our Best Instincts: Protecting Women, Mothering Children

force with both physical and psychological scars.” “We are dedicated to identifying and caring for those Soldiers who have sustained psychological and physical trauma associated with an Army engaged in a protracted war,” she said, adding that the war fighter does not stand alone. Horoho commanded the Army Nurse Corps since 2008, when she received a rare two-grade promotion from colonel to major general. As Army surgeon general, she directs the thirdlargest healthcare system in the United States, behind the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Hospital Corporation of America. The Army surgeon general’s impact extends far beyond the Army to the national and the international level, collaboration and partnership with other public and private entities on research, standards of practices, national leadership in areas such as brain injury, concussive disorders, mental health promotion and pain management. It was reported that General Horoho earned this extremely important leadership position, not only because of her incredible past performance

We know that rape is a tool of torture for the already savage enemy we’re fighting. In one TV interview, a woman suggested that if women are willing to take that risk, we should let them. She also absurdly claimed that men are raped as much as women when captured, which is patently false. But the idea that men shouldn’t worry any more about women in battle goes against the very best primal male instinct. In every country from Canada to Israel where women are in combat (and in American units where women are in theater), the men will tell you they are more protective of the women. It’s different from men’s protection of each other, and it distracts from mission completion. The proWICs* would have men thwart this wonderful and thoroughly ingrained Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Three Chords and the Truth

December 30, 2015

Island Moon

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

HAPPY NEW YEAR… This is it folks, my last music column of 2015. To be exact, it’s the 266th one I’ve written since June of 2009 and, I might brag, without missing a single deadline. I can see my pal, Chris Jordan’s eyes rolling completely back in his head right now, “So what do you want, a medal?” Naw…. I’ll just keep plugging away here as long as they’ll have me. It’s time to thank my sponsors who have stayed with me month to month and year to year… Kip Shannon over at the Gaff and Glenn Martin (and previously Susan Powell) at the Back Porch have been with me since day one. JB Atkinson at Paradise Computer isn’t far behind. Not to mention Bron Doyle at Bron’s Beach Carts, Edwin and Amy Myers at Shorty’s and Giggity’s, Captain Billy Gaskins at the Island Queen, Jeff Miller at Keepers and Ashley Richards at the Drop Anchor… THANK YOU!!! You guys keep me going and make it possible for all this magic to happen (Again, Chris is rolling his eyes.) But I mean it. These fine people are pillars of our community and provide us with great services and venues for great entertainment. I hope you will frequent their fine establishments and take advantage of their superior services.

Kip and the boys get judgemental at the Gaff’s annual Black Eyed Pea-off pals, Preecher Williams and Billy Snipes, and we headed across the ditch. When we got there, I had a hard time figuring out what the place was. It was in the location that was previously home to the Rockin’ B Steak House across the street from the Rialto Theater on Commercial Street. When I walked in, the first thing I saw were like three dozen old accordions on one wall and dozens of vintage instruments: guitars, horns, basses, lap steels, violins and amps

Steve Earle with Chris Masterson on guitar played the House of Rock on May 10th. Keep ‘em coming… I saw many, many bands this year. Since it seems to be journalistically relevant to evaluate each year come the end of December, I’ll bite. My favorite shows for 2015 were Shinyribs at the Back Porch, Steve Earle at the House of Rock, Joe Ely at the Black Marlin, The Dirty River Boys at Brewster Street, Uncle Lucius at the Back Porch, Roxy Roca at the Back Porch, The Uranium Savages at Shorty’s, The Rosellys at Giggity’s and Joe King Carrasco at Giggity’s. This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy many of the local and regional shows all year, too.

Mike Milligan will play Giggity’s on New Year’s Eve. DO NOT MISS LIST

I don’t know what this place is…

New Year’s Eve…

(etc)… absolutely everywhere. It was a classic “shotgun” building (long and narrow) and there was a stage in the back and a bar in the front. It still had the big commercial kitchen in the I was invited to a post-Christmas party in back from when it was a restaurant. It was like Aransas Pass this weekend by two friends of a museum or a very cool vintage music store in mine, Tony Saracene and Kit Guterz. In case New York… but it wasn’t. I asked Kip and Tony you don’t know these fellows, Kit has been a what the place was and they weren’t exactly sure fixture on the island for many years and played either. Evidently, it’s a work in progress where his array of instruments (tuba, accordion, fiddle, they can display their impressive collection of trombone, etc) at the Crazy Cajun for decades cool, old music equipment and instruments and and Tony is one of the finest slide guitarists record some music along the way. There were around. I loaded up the truck with a couple of my some of our local musicians and songwriters on hand, such as Tyler McCumber, Dan Brodhag, Bobby McDonough, Jamie Smith, George Hermes, Bill Averbach, Dave Ward, Jack Gant, Ray Summy and a lady named Michelle from New Jersey who played classical viola. It was a nice party. Mitzi Webb was there to provide the hostess/photographer duties. We ate and pulled instruments off the walls and admired them. Some of the guys traded a song or two. I think it’s OK that they don’t know what the place is yet. When they figure it out, it will be obvious to everyone. But for now, it’s the Music Emporium and it’s a cool place Christmas party at the Music Emporium in Aransas Pass. to hang out.

Uncle Lucius played an excellent show at the Back Porch on April 20th. Clearly, Matt Hole, Ty Dietz, Ruben Limas, Picklefish, Duke E. Brown, Flatbroke, Lyrical Binge, Mike Milligan, Todd Dorn, That Captain, W.C. Clark, Aloha Dave, Selfie, Cruise Control, Scarecrow People and on and on, repeatedly put on great shows whenever and wherever they play and are true dedicated warriors hammering it out in the trenches, week after week. I salute them, one and all. It really has been another lively year of music on the Gulf Coast. I’m sure 2016 won’t disappoint us either.

OK. It’s New Year’s so you get my “Don’t Drive Drunk” lecture. This year, I’ll be hopelessly sober so just call me and I’ll run you home. Or I’ll send a taxi. No problem. Call me. I don’t mind. The big show on Friday is at Giggity’s with Mike Milligan and Texiana Blues (Austin, TX). This band is perfect. Great to dance to. Lot’s of high energy blues. They’ll have a free champagne toast at midnight and enough party hats and noise makers to kill a normal man. Plus there’s no cover. Shorty’s doesn’t have a band going on New Year’s Eve. Over at the Gaff, owner Kip Shannon has told me in the past that he thinks NYE is for amateurs but New Year’s DAY is another story. Join them for their 8th annual BLACK EYED PEA OFF. All entries are due no later than 4:00 and all proceeds go to the ARK. Shorty’s will have Ty Dietz and Tony Saracene on the 1st and Flatbroke will be at Giggity’s. HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVERYBODY! Be safe out there. See you on the other side. Thanks for supporting live music.
