Hot Numbers Called at BINGO at the BEACH
Large Crowds Enjoying Weeknight Fun By Brent Rourk Lining up with smiles, hopes , and bingo daubers, capacity crowds have been enjoying the Kiwanis of Padre Island’s BINGO at the BEACH every Thursday at the Holiday Inn from 7-9 PM. In addition to nice cash prizes, guests have enjoyed the many door prizes given away each evening. Last week $790 in prize money was distributed to 14 winners, with the lowest cash prize $20 and the largest $200. The wide range of door prizes included a nights’ stay at the Comfort Inn, free meals, 10 bottles of wine, a knife set, candles, chocolate, a cook book, T-shirts, and more. Bingo fans from around the area are enjoying the fun and relaxed atmosphere at BINGO at the BEACH. Several bingo goers commented last week that they appreciate having beverages and food service available to them while others stated that it is fun to get out of the house during a weeknight, have fun, and get home by 9:15 PM. All of the proceeds from BINGO at the BEACH support various children’s causes on the Island and in the Corpus Christi area. Kiwanis members recommend arriving early, getting a great seat and favorite beverage, and enjoying the company of your friends and family.

Greetings From Frostbite Falls
Transformation in Frostbite Falls By Frostbite Betty “First you get a snow, and then you get a blow,” the Old Timer from the end of the Frostbite Road taught me, the newbie, decades ago. Transformation, from benign gently falling calendar-art snow, into those sinister hardpacked drifts that block the driveway, and entrap the car. Well we will fix that, won’t we Bert? Let’s go get a real winter car. Maybe two.

I just shoveled this Yesterday! So we spent a stressful day at the car dealer a couple hours away, and drove off with a shiny new number that has a special dial that you turn to “snow” if you need it. Aha then, surely this will solve everything. The helpful young car salesman set us up with a Reggae station, called The Joint, on the fancy radio, which is called a touch screen sound system. “Don’t worry, beat beat, about a thing...” And so, Transformation Number Two: old car turns into a new car with payments. And a new diet to compensate: beans, rice, and cheap beer. Ahh the irony. Now that we can get to and from any bar any time we want, all we have left is tip money. So the next day as we were still wound up from the big anxious car event, I figured I would make us a real nice dinner. Which I did, just right for the two of us. As it cooks, here comes one of our favorite good cheer pals, Marco the horse guy. So of course we say, “Come in an eat after you feed the big beauties. “ And of course he says yes, as we’d hoped. So here comes Transformation Three: dinner for two, morphs into a really great dinner for three, and there were leftovers, which morphed into yummy soup which we have eaten twice so far, and still a bunch in the freezer. Such a wonder. Ending up with more than we started.

Police Blotter Two Suspects Put Skimming Device On Bank ATM
By Phil Hardberger
Corpus Christi Police Detectives need your help identifying two men that they believe put a skimming device on an ATM at a bank located at 6230 South Staples Street on February 4.
Editor’s note: San Antonio attorney, former judge, and former San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger is an avid sailor who for many years kept his boat in Port Aransas. He chronicled his sailing adventures for the San Antonio Express-News and we reprint this article on his sailing trip from Texas to New Orleans with their permission.

When bank employees went to investigate they discovered that the part that broke off was actually part of a card skimmer device that was designed to look like part of the ATM. The skimming device was designed to fit over the card insert dock and was held in place with adhesive tape. When they investigated further, they also found a small camera that had been placed on the ATM and was also being held in place by tape. They believe the camera was used to record people entering their bank pins numbers.
Holland, Michigan, September. Fall comes early in these high latitudes. The trees are already splashed with little dabs of yellow, oranges, reds and purple. Although we are in middle-America, we are at 43 degrees of latitude, as high as Boston. Mornings are cold, sweaters part of our normal dress. We’ve come 2481 nautical miles since leaving Port Aransas. Aimless, our 42 foot trawler runs at 9 knots per hour (10 mph) so these distances take a while, two and one-half months in our case. Slow travel brings its rewards. You absorb the country, accents changing with the temperature, too slow to notice except in retrospect. Everyday beauty absorbs us, seeps through our skin. Eyes, dimmed by age and common experience, brighten and we see with refreshed vision the beauty of our country and the glory of our skies. Traveling our rivers teaches us how many shades of green are possible, the interweaving of water and air is a marvel of light diversity. Sometimes clear and sparkling, sometimes obscure, dark green and unknowable, sometimes simply a dirty brown, full of soil, waste, alligator, gars, and catfish. The flow of the river connects us with the passing of time, and foreshadows eternity.

Officers responded to the bank after a customer came inside and told employees that he went to use the drive thru ATM and when he inserted his card and attempted to pull it out, the card got stuck. The customer said he pulled harder on his card and that is when the dock where you insert your card broke off.
When we left Texas at the end of June, it was extremely hot and our first days of traveling were filled with sweat and an acute desire to hide from the punishing sun. One advantage of being on a boat though is that your swimming pool travels with you: right off the back of the boat. We took full advantage of this at the close of each day’s travel. We had an especially hot, long day getting to the Sabine River, the dividing line between Texas and Louisiana, reaching there in late afternoon. In addition to Linda and me, we had Jeff Berven, a friend from Corpus Christi and a fellow-sailor, aboard.

Town Hall Meeting for Veterans February 16 The Veterans Administration and Coastal Bend Health Care System will hold a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday February 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi 6300 Ocean Drive. It will be held in Oso Room 221. A Health Care System (VATVCBHCS) leadership team including Mr. Joe A. Perez, Interim Director, and other Health Care System Leaders will make a presentation of the state of the Health Care System, information on Non-VA Care and Veterans Choice Program and solicit constructive feedback from Stakeholders. This event is aimed at soliciting constructive feedback from Veterans on how we can improve our operations.
I knew of an attractive anchorage on the Sabine, called Shell Island which is protected from passing barges and the occasional summer storms. We could not wait to go swimming in those protected, clean waters. The minute we anchored there was a rush for swimming suits and soon we were all on the swim platform at the stern of the boat. Just as we were about to plunge in, Linda cried out in alarm: “There’s an alligator”! While we were locating this prehistoric beast, Jeff said: “There are two more”! Sure enough we were sharing our anchorage with three alligators we could see, and likely there were some we couldn’t. We stared at them, they stared back at us. The sun beat down, the sweat poured. We jumped in. At first we stayed near the boat, the better to climb out in a hurry. But the water was so delicious, we swam further and further away, reveling in the cool water, many miles from any civilization. The alligators watched with disgusted interest, but did not leave the banks and the cool mud. There was an unspoken pact: you don’t eat us and we won’t make a pair of loafers out of you.
Police were able to obtain images of the suspects from the real camera of the ATM as they were placing the skimming device on the machine at about 7:30 p.m. on February 3. If you recognize either of these two suspects or if you have information about this case please call the Corpus Christi Police Criminal Investigations Division at 8862840. Anyone who would like to keep their identity secret and provide information to the Detectives should call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS (8477) or submit the tip online at http:// www.888TIPS.com. Information provided to Crime Stoppers which results in an arrest may earn the caller a cash reward.

This was to be the pattern for the seven days it took us to reach New Orleans. Every day we hoped there would be no alligators. Every afternoon there were alligators. We swam every afternoon anyway: though there was a frisson of danger and when an alligator took it upon himself to join us in a little swim of his own, I found our own swimming skills improved enormously as we raced back to the boat.
The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to 984 calls for service and generated 230 reports for formal criminal complaints from 7:00 a.m. February 4 to 7:00 a.m. on February 5. The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to 785 calls for service and generated 180 reports for formal criminal complaints from 7:00 a.m. February 7 to 7:00 a.m. on February 8.
Interestingly enough we saw no more alligators after New Orleans. The mosquitoes also departed, not to return after we reached there. Neither was missed. The rest of our trip was bug free. I cannot explain this as we continued to be surrounded by thick vegetation, and were always, by definition, on the water. But there are many birds, and many fish, who would rather dine on mosquitoes than we would on a T-bone steak, so perhaps the normal order of things is better than bug spray.

Padre Island Teen By Elizabeth Clark
Valentine's Day Valentine's Day has to be the most awkward day of the year for teenagers. The fear of rejection and vague feeling of imminent doom always seems to cloud our judgement when deciding on whether or not to give a gift to a special someone. The burden of coming off as too forward, too relaxed, or just crazy scares us before we can even really decide if we like them. It is a hundred times harder to figure out if you even want to try. The high school social ladder is very intimidating. This Valentine's Day, single teens shouldn't feel obligated to buy the typical cards and expensive roses and chocolates, but they should use the holiday as a day to make themselves happy. Be your own Valentine! Use the holiday as an opportunity to treat yourself. Take advantage of Valentine's Day sales on clothes and candy and have a night in dedicated to your mental health (because we all feel the effects of school finally taking their toll...). And for those who do have someone on their mind, do something original and noteworthy for your love. Forget roses that wither, and a teddy bear that will eventually just be put away in the closet. Take a walk in the park; pack a romantic picnic; have a night in. Make this Valentine's Day an original best.

How Do We Keep Kids and Grandkids Safe On Social Media? By Dotson Lewis Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: Since we have many grandparents also raising grandchildren, I thought that the following discussion should be addressed to both parents and grandparents, thus “parents/grandparents,” which appears through-out this article... Nicole Lovell, 13, may have met her alleged killer online. Experts say that the best Internet safety tip for parents/ grandparents is, “be involved with children’s digital lives.” My thanks to Kelly Wallace, CNN tech writer for her contributions to this article.
Teens’ Social Secrets Go Deeper Than Parents Think There is still so much we don’t know about how a 13-year-old Blacksburg, Virginia girl got to know an 18-year-old Virginia Tech freshman before he allegedly stabbed her to death.
Nicole Madison Lovell--Missing co-founder of the Digital Citizenship Summit, which is a global network of conferences focused on improving social media use. According to a Pew Research Center national survey last summer, nearly six out of 10 teens say they met a new friend online, and 20% of the teens who met people online followed up in person.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, email me at PadreIslandTeen@ gmail.com.
David Eisenhauer-Facebook Photo
“Many physical relationships and friendships are first started online before they move offline. In other words, online, we are constantly talking to strangers,” said Polgar, a former attorney and college professor who frequently comments on tech issues. “It is easy to feel a false sense of intimacy through online relationships. It is important to ‘trust but verify,’ and have a healthy level of caution both in one’s interactions online and in the physical realm.”
Family “Tech Transparency” Low tides have left area beaches wide of late.
What we do know is a bit more about a possible motive in the death of Nicole Lovell, a middle school student. David Eisenhauer, a college track and field athlete, is thought to have had an inappropriate relationship with Lovell and stabbed her to death because she threatened to expose their relationship, according to a law enforcement official. But how did they meet? How did the alleged relationship begin? Signs are pointing toward an online network, after police arrested Eisenhauer based on tips and leads obtained from social media. We also know that Lovell was active on social media, including posting in a Facebook group called “Teen Dating and Flirting,” which has since been shut down.
Parenting Lessons From Child Predator Social Experiment On New Year’s Day, Lovell reportedly posted a selfie in the group, with the comment “cute or nah,” which garnered more than 300 responses, most of them in the vicious category. Lovell also was active on the anonymous instant messaging app Kik. According to a neighbor, Lovell had shown one of her daughter’s texts she had exchanged with an 18-year-old that she planned to meet the night she disappeared.
Greer, the national Internet safety expert, said a great way for parents to stay on top of the apps their kids are using is to use the “Ask to Buy” feature with Apple devices or the “Authentication” feature in the Google Play Store. “Utilizing these features will make it so that parents have to approve apps before they’re installed on their kids’ devices,” Greer said. “This way, parents can gather information on apps before allowing their kids access to them, while staying active and informed on the latest and greatest (or not-so-great) apps.” Graber of CyberWise said there are also online parenting apps, such as PocketGuardian or ThirdParent, that will catch and alert you to unsafe or potentially harmful activity on your child’s phone and suggest what to do or where to turn for help. Developing a family relationship with social media that takes into consideration age, family values and any unique circumstances is vital, and so is communicating how the family is going to monitor social media, Polgar said. “The goal is to have tech transparency as a family in order for parents to best supervise and mentor their children,” he said.
Are We Addicted To The Internet? Kelly Wallace writes, “If you are a parent and you are wildly frightened after this latest tragedy, I can relate. Who knows what platforms and apps will be available when my girls, who are 8 and 9, get to middle and high school?”

It has been widely reported that parents/ grandparents are not aware of the social applications that their teens might be using, such as Ask.fm, and how the anonymity on these sites can lead to bullying and other dangerous behavior. So what can parents/grandparents do to keep their kids safe on social media?
Know What Your Children Are Up To On the one hand, especially after a tragedy like the death of Lovell, you can see how they might want to ban their children from all social media. No engaging, no trouble. But that’s not a reality in today’s world, when social media is a key way teens socialize and spend their time.
Hours of Operation for Valentine’s Weekend:
Instead of a ban, parents should show interest in their children’s online lives, said Diana Graber, co-founder of ”CyberWise.org,” a digital literacy site for parents, educators, teens and tweens. This is not a new piece of advice, but it bears repeating again and again: Be involved.
Friday 12th 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. (also open for lunch 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
Replace The ‘Sex Talk’ With The ‘Tech Talk’?
Saturday 13th 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
“This can be as simple as asking your child to show you how to use an app they love, and then let that evolve into a conversation about what’s going on in their online world,” said Graber, who also teaches “Cyber Civics” to middle schoolers in Aliso Viejo, California.
We Will Be Celebrating Valentine’s Day this year on Fri. Feb 12th & Sat. Feb 13th We will be offering a FULL MENU with some Exquisite Specials for You and Your Honey to Enjoy!!

Parents have been “checking in” for centuries, and they shouldn’t believe that just because their kids are in the house behind a screen that something can’t go wrong, said Katie Greer, who has provided Internet and technology safety training to schools, law enforcement agencies and community organizations for nearly a decade. She says parents can be reasonably involved in their children’s digital lives by asking questions and doing spot checks, which can highlight potentially dangerous or problematic situations.
Teens’ Social Secrets Go Deeper Than Parents Think While every parent has probably taught their children not to talk to strangers in the offline world, many probably haven’t had a conversation about how to make relationships in the online world, said David Ryan Polgar, the
“But I keep thinking about the smart advice from these Internet safety experts: We can take steps to try to keep our kids safe. There is a way.” Educating our kids about digital safety, engaging with them on what they are doing and what they are experiencing, and empowering them to be safe in the online world can help give them the “modern street smarts” that are required in today’s world, said Polgar. “Since kids spend more time online than they do in school or with their families, parents can no longer turn a blind eye to their digital activities,” said Graber of CyberWise. “The stakes are just too high.” Dotson’s Other Note: A good friend, Rodney Brown, CEO of Malkan Broadcasting (Includes KEYS AM 1440) has volunteered to teach a Social Networking Class (Facebook 101) in the Del Mar College Senior Education Computer Program. Even if you are not interested in learning Social Networking but have a kid/ grandkid who “messes” around with a computer, it might be a good idea to enroll in this class just to find out what is going on with the kids and their computers. If you are interested in taking this class, call or Email me and I will let you know when you can register for the class. What do you think parents/grandparents can do to try to keep their kids safe online? Please share your thoughts with me. Dotson’s Other Note: It’s great that you read, and send comments regarding what I write; thank you. Please call or Email. Phone: 361-949-7681; Email: dlewis1@stx.rr.com The next Veterans Roundtable Meeting will be Tuesday, February 9, 2016, 9-11 AM, in Room 126, Del Mar College, Center For Economic Development, 3209 S. Staples. All Veterans, their families and anyone interested in Veterans affairs, are invited. Coffee & Doughnuts are provided. Hope to see you there.

STATE HB 10: Legislative Reforms To Help Curb And Eradicate Human Trafficking
By Todd Hunter, District 32
Since the 84th Texas Legislative Session has come to a close, I want to take this opportunity to look at an important bill that I had the privilege to work on for our area. Each legislative session, there are a number of priorities facing the state and it is important that we examine some of these pieces of legislation that will be impacting the Coastal Bend. House Bill 10 is an important bill that we passed this session dealing with human trafficking prevention in the state of Texas. I want to highlight some of the central themes and background information about HB 10. A few years ago, the Human Trafficking Prevention Task Force was created to have a statewide partnership between law enforcement agencies, social service providers, nongovernmental organizations, legal representatives, and state agencies that are fighting on the front line against human trafficking. The task force works to develop policies and procedures to fulfill that purpose, and proposes legislative recommendations to better protect adult and child victims of human trafficking. In the months leading up to the 84th Legislative Session, I had the privilege of serving on a joint House and Senate Interim Committee to work with the task force and develop legislation to address human trafficking in our state. The resulting legislation, HB 10, seeks to prevent and ultimately eliminate human trafficking by enacting the recommendations made by the task force in the 2014 Human Trafficking Prevention Task Force Report. The bill amends current law relating to certain criminal and civil consequences of trafficking of persons, compelling prostitution, and certain other related criminal offenses, to the prevention, prosecution, and punishment of those offenses, and to compensation paid to victims of those offenses. It is important to know that human trafficking is not exclusive to one segment of society. Human trafficking involves victims of all races, age groups, both males and females, and United States citizens, as well as non-citizens. Individuals seeking to force people into human trafficking do not discriminate amongst their victims and often prey upon those who are most vulnerable. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for one of three purposes:
• Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age. • The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. The national hotline for the National Human Trafficking Resource Center is (888) 373-7888 and it is available in over 200 languages and is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you would like to learn more about what is being done to combat human trafficking, please visit http://www.humantrafficking.org/combat_ trafficking/prevention . Also, the United States Department of Justice’s website regarding human trafficking can be found at: http://www. justice.gov/archive/olp/human_trafficking.htm . If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at http://www.house. state.tx.us/ . The site features live streaming from committee hearings as well as access to a number of other resources. You can also follow the Texas Senate at http://www.senate.state. tx.us/ . For important information regarding transportation in the state, feel free to visit the Texas Department of Transportation’s website at http://www.txdot.gov/ . The Texas General Land Office’s website can be found at http:// www.glo.texas.gov/ , while the Texas Railroad Commission’s website is located at http://www. rrc.state.tx.us . If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603).

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Bon temps rouler… I’ve endured enough Mardi Gras festivities to kill a normal person since last Saturday. I’ve survived two parades and two great parties… which is nothing compared to the festivities in New Orleans or Rio but a lot of fun none the less. The Barefoot Mardi Gras parade on N. Padre last Saturday was a bonified hoot, as always. And, as promised, Rankin came up with a real live Army tank and we all decked out as soldiers (what a stretch). I actually showed up barefooted, but the sand was freezing so I had to borrow Dale’s shrimper boots and walk the whole parade route in them. I was quite the fashion statement in my white boots and camo. But, thousands of spectators lined the beach and this parade has become a major event on N. Padre. And as promised, the King and Queen’s Ball at the Veranda that evening was another world class bash. The band, Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra (San Antonio, TX) got the party rolling from downbeat when their Mad Dog Horns paraded through the crowd with Conga line in tow. They kept the zydeco rocking all night for a first class party, despite the fact that there wasn’t a mudbug one at the event. Note to all party throwers, you can’t have a Mardi Gras party worth it’s salt without serving crawdads, it’s the law. It’s like having a weenie roast with no weenies. But all and all, it was a really great party.

term “parade” was a loose interpretation at the time. At the first parade, it was only Moon Mike and Janet Planet with Preecher Williams, Julie Caraker, Bill Averbach, Kit Gutherz, Jack Gant and a handful of locals who marched from Pelican’s Landing (now the Phoenix) to Sharkey’s (now Bernie’s) playing music, where the late Jody McCormick stunned everyone by actually paying $100 for the band… something that had never happened before, according to Janet Planet. But the event has more than flourished in the last 20 years, getting bigger and better all the time. This year the line of “floats” reached down the street from the Gaff all the way to the beach. I had the privilege of driving the lead float this year (no one else had a truck to loan with a trailer hitch) pulling one of the Gaff’s pirate boats full of maniacs throwing beads. There were literally thousands of people lining the streets of Port A to collect their beads. I must say, Mardi Gras in Port A is something to be proud of. As a community, we shine on that day.
Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang will playGiggity’s on Friday. FunkaSaurus, R.B. Blackstone, is a longtime fixture on the S.A. music scene and is a well respected recording engineer. R.B. is actually the guy who installed the sound system at the Alamo Dome (how’s that for trivia?). And the lead vocalist and trumpet player, Mike Sanders used to play in the great R&B band, Tote Lee Blues, which also featured Augie Meyer’s son Clay Meyers on drums. Nobody does horn bands like San Antonio and it was a real treat for me to have these guys in the house. I really enjoyed reconnecting with these fine fellows. I know the SRO crowd at Giggity’s really dug them too.

And those hits just keep right on coming. On Friday one of the island’s favorite rockabilly wild men, Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Giggity’s. I’ll put this band against darn near anybody for getting the party rolling. Also on Friday, Carol Elliott is at the Drop Anchor (5-7), Billy Snipes is at the Gaff, Stevie Start is at Shorty’s and Chris Saenz is at Scuttlebutt’s. On Saturday, Lyrical Binge (Corpus Christi, TX) will bring the
Melissa Brooke will play Treasure Island on Saturday. edgier side of classic rock to Giggity’s, Melissa Brooke is at Tropical Island, the “bluesy Paul Simon” Nigel Egg is at the Drop Anchor and a band I’ve been hearing good things about, Splendiferous is at the Vino Mio Social Club. Plus on Saturday, don’t miss the world famous BELT SANDER RACES at the Gaff with Uncle Willey and Russell Edge and at House of Rock, the great reggae of Spoonfed Tribe will play. On Sunday, I highly recommend bringing your Valentine to hear the great torch singer, Mike Williams, for Giggity’s Sunday brunch (11 AM3PM). It will definitely get your Valentine’s Day off on the right foot. Also on Sunday, the PA Rockers will play a fundraiser for the Island Art Center at the Port Aransas Civic Center from 6-10. On Monday, ex-Charlie Pride guitarist, Ron Baker will play another installment of the Winter Sounds series at the Port A Community Theater.

Funky, funky Mardi Gras…
Janet Planet with Bill Averbach and this year’s royalty The Fat Tuesday parade in Port A, marked the 20th anniversary of the event. It was started by the always animated Janet Planet and Island Moon founder, the late Mike Ellis. Janet got a bit emotional when she reminisced about the early days of the parade and how much enthusiasm Mike would add to the event. She told me that at the first Port A parade, there were only a few participants, though Constable Bobby Sherwood did escort them on their route, the
And as soon as the parade was over, the music began. The Port A Rockers played to their big Winter Texan market at Bernie’s, John Boyd (San Antonio, TX) played at Treasure Island and a really great seven piece funky horn band, FunkaSaurus Tex (San Antonio, TX) played at Giggity’s. Those guys kept the dance floor hopping for three straight hours. I hope we see them again. It turns out that I knew several of the players in that band from years past in San Antonio. Jerry Clayton was on drums… I knew him back in the 90’s when he went by Fred Zeppelin, the “eye in the sky” traffic reporter for KZEP-FM (Jerry is also a pilot). He was also the drummer for the house band, Jimmy Spacek and Heavy Traffic at Billy Blues circa: 1992. The keyboardist for
