Pasta Inspiration Please!!!
By Chef Vita Jarrin Are you bored with pasta recipes? Are you tired of the basic red or white sauce, tossed with veggies, meat or fish? Well here is a new recipe for you to try. Pasta Con Patate. In translation…It’s a creamy potato pasta sauce, cooked until the potatoes fall apart and create a creamy sauce. Besides, this dish tasting velvety smooth, this recipe gives you another reason to use the extra potatoes in the pantry.
Creamy Potato Pasta brings back childhood memories. When I was growing up my mom was frugal, as well as creative, utilizing pantry items to make a family meal that was quick, easy and delicious. This was also a dish that allowed for working parents to come home, cook a quick family meal and then have time left over to socialize together or with others, without feeling drained or over stuffed from food.
Once you taste this pasta dish, you will be pleasantly surprised. You will ask yourself…
Potato Sauce Ingredients 2 shallots minced 2 cloves garlic minced 2 anchovies (preferably ones with caper) 4 large celery stalks trimmed & diced 4 large russet potatoes peeled, rinsed & diced 1 tsp. kosher salt
I thought that I saw ‘The Fonz’ sauntering around the Sonic parking lot on Tuesday afternoon looking at the classic cars on display, but perhaps it was just one of many suave looking and aging Islanders. The cars were to die for! Proudly lined up and showing their smooth lines, bold colors, and powerful engines, eight amazing automobiles drew envious stares and coveting thoughts from Islanders and Sonic customers. The cars were impeccably clean, boasting mirror-like finishes to complement their colors and shapes.
“Why didn’t I ever make sauce out of potatoes before?” Once the potatoes cook down and you add the cream, butter and cheese, you hardly know that you made this sauce out of potatoes.
In another sauce pot, on medium heat, heat oil, add shallots, garlic and anchovies and stir.
Pinch of chili flakes (or more if you like it spicy)
Add chicken stock, bring to a quick boil and then let simmer
2 Tbsp. butter
Add salt, pepper, chili flakes (chili flakes optional)
¼ c. heavy cream 1 Tbsp. fresh flat leaf parsley minced 8 oz. Mafaldine pasta Fresh celery leaves for garnish
To finish, add butter and Parmesan cheese, stirring to maintain creamy consistency.
Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling over pasta before serving
Toss ¾ of the sauce with pasta and top the pasta with the remaining sauce.
Extra grated Parmesan cheese to sprinkle over pasta
Garnish plate with grated Parmesan cheese, celery leaves and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil before serving.
1 tsp olive oil for pasta water for pasta not to stick 2 Tbsp. iodized salt for pasta water 2- 4 qt sauce pots Wooden spoon, tongs, spoons for tasting
A powerful 1950s-era Chevy
Add heavy cream, let cook for 2 minutes
½ lemon zested
Supplies Needed
If you have not yet had the opportunity to see these classis Island cars, take your family and friends to the Island Sonic on Saturday, January 30th between 3 and 4PM when more classics will be featured. You will also be able to see these beautiful automobiles during the Barefoot Mardi Gras. You will not be disappointed.
Once the potatoes break down and absorb the stock, the potatoes will become creamy
Remove from heat, add the lemon zest and parsley, and stir to mix.
4 qt. water for cooking pasta

***NOTE*** Reserve some pasta water, if pasta sauce is too thick or you wish to reheat, the water will loosen the thickened sauce
Once anchovies break down, add celery, potatoes and keep stirring on medium heat
2 c. chicken stock
Each car, at least 25 years old, reflected interesting and historical automobile design, function, and style, instantly catapulting the viewer back into time when for years Detroit built classic cars. Several decades were proudly and colorfully represented, providing a scene out of Happy Days.
Bring a pot of water with salt & olive oil to a boil for pasta while you prepare sauce. Cook pasta to al dente
¼ tsp. fresh cracked black pepper
¼ imported Parmesan cheese for tossing

“Pasta Con Patate” Creamy Potato Sauce & Prepare celery, potatoes, shallots and Pasta garlic for sauce as indicated above. 3 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
PIACC Cruise In Brings New Classics
Back to the days of the rumble seat
Tip of the week: Make the sauce 1 to 2 days in advance for a quick week night meal, and if you need to add a liquid to loosen the sauce, add a little chicken and cream to mixture when heating. This meal is filling, so it’s perfect when all you want is a one bowl meal! Have fun! Try new things! & Happy Eats and Enjoy!

By Frostbite Betty Kids and grandkids made the wintry drive north to Frostbite Falls for the long weekend. Susie is five. This morning while we sat at the kids breakfast table by the fire, she said, “Do you know what keeps your mind in your head?” “What?” I say. “Booby traps. [Pause, frown. . . ] But they go off when you sleep. In the morning.” So, that’s that. Those hardy kids ran around on snowshoes, went for a dogsled ride, slid down the snow banks. Even well after dark one day their dad took them out for a nighttime snowshoe hike through the trees.

Since the temperature plummeted just as they arrived, I figured we could use some freeze-up creativity. We filled up Dixie cups and rubber gloves with colored water, to see what we could make. Icicles we already had aplenty. Turns out it only takes about two seconds to “glue” parts together with water spray. Even broken fingers! The part the kids liked the most was breaking off the icicles. Grandma Frostbite always makes them “draw their day” in their sketch books after they get ready for bed. So there we all are, sitting contentedly in the evening by the fire, and Mama says, “Isn’t this a nice place to be at the ends of our days.” And Owen looks up from his drawing long enough to say, “I’m only 7. It’s not the end of the day for me.” So that’s that. Stay warm y’all. Cheers from Betty and Bert.

We have assembled a listing of fun, interesting and educational activities our community has to offer. We encourage you to email us photos and tell us your stories (ronnienarmour@gmail. com). Enjoy!

2016 Volunteer Opportunities with Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle Nesting Project at The National Seashore
Cold Stun Update The numbers of cold stunned sea turtles found to date during the 2015-2016 cold stunning season in Texas are as follows: All were green turtles.

National Park Service, Padre Island National Seashore E-mail: Donna_Shaver@nps.gov Padre Island National Seashore is excited to announce the 2016 sea turtle nesting season spring volunteer training events scheduled in March. Each year, more than 100 people from the community volunteer with our nest detection and protection program. Continued volunteer participation is essential to the success of our program. If you are interested in volunteering at Padre Island National Seashore to help with the Kemp’s ridley restoration program this year, this article contains information on our program and how you can participate.
About the Program The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle is the smallest and most endangered sea turtle species in the world. For more than three decades, Padre Island National Seashore has aided with a global effort to help recover the populations of threatened and endangered sea turtles, particularly that of the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. More than half of the Kemp’s ridley nests found in the U.S. each year are located at the National Seashore. Kemp’s ridley sea turtles nest in south Texas from April through mid-July. Females nest one to four times throughout the nesting season, at intervals of about 14 to 28 days. They often come ashore in synchronized nesting events called arribadas (Spanish for “arrival”). Kemp’s ridley turtles typically come ashore during daylight hours, on windy days, but sometimes nest at night. The females crawl onshore in search of a spot above the high tide line to lay their eggs. Once a nest site has been selected, a nester uses her rear flippers, tossing sand up in the air while digging, to build an “egg chamber.” She then deposits a “clutch” of eggs in the chamber and covers the nest, never to return to the nest again. Each clutch contains about 100 soft, leathery eggs. The eggs from nests found on North Padre Island and the northern Texas coast are relocated to Padre Island National Seashore for protected incubation. Nests recovered from the southernmost section of the Seashore are transplanted into a “corral,” a large screen enclosure located 40 miles south of Malaquite beach. Nests from South Padre Island are protected in a corral there. At these locations, the delicate eggs are protected from a variety of threats including poaching, predators, tidal inundation, and vehicles, and are monitored and cared for throughout incubation. After about 50 days of incubation, the hatchlings emerge from the eggs and are protected from predators as they are released into the Gulf of Mexico.

Volunteer Opportunities Each year, more than 100 people from the community volunteer with the National Seashore’s program to find, document, and protect nesting Kemp’s ridley sea turtles and their eggs. A variety of local, national, and international partners conduct simultaneous patrols throughout the Gulf coast. The success of our program is made possible through the assistance of our dedicated volunteers at Padre Island National Seashore. We are proud to say we have many returning volunteers; but we seek to recruit additional volunteers to help with increased needs of the program. Most people volunteering with our turtle project participate in patrols to find, document, and protect nesting Kemp’s ridley turtles and their eggs using Utility Transport Vehicles (UTVs). Patrols are during daylight hours since Kemp’s ridleys nest mostly during the day, along designated routes on the northern section of Padre Island. Volunteers conducting UTV patrols are paired with Biological Science Technicians. However, volunteers can also help in other ways such as radio dispatching or conducting walking patrols on local Gulf beaches. Volunteers also help with operational support activities such as transporting eggs to our incubation facility by beach and highway. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. If volunteers will be driving a government vehicle, they must possess a valid driver’s license. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of at least 10 hours a month for each month of the patrol season (April through mid-July), or at least 30 hours over the entire patrol season (this does not include training hours). Housing is not provided to volunteers.
Volunteer Training Schedule All volunteers wishing to participate during the 2016 nesting season are required to attend a classroom training session every year, regardless of the activities they will be conducting. At the classroom training session, volunteers will be provided the documentation required for their participation in the upcoming season. They will also receive information about the program and volunteer duties. Note that attendance at the 2015 fall/ winter cold stunned training does not fulfill the requirements of becoming a 2016 spring/summer volunteer.

Mia Needs Help
My name is Mia and I am the definition of a total sweetheart! When I was rescued along the side of a road by a kind lady from Mission Pawsible, I had an old injury to my right front leg. I don’t really remember what happened to me when I was little but the veterinarians said my leg had been badly injured and the bones and growth plate had healed improperly therefore I would need surgery. As I grow, the deformity can cause problems with my other bones and the discomfort will increase. Even in spite of my floppy leg, I am still very happy and energetic and I LOVE to play with my foster siblings. I guess you could say I am very “Happy Go Lucky” because now I am loved, safe and well cared for. After the surgery, I look forward to finding my forever home and being able to romp and play with a forever family. I am only 1 1/2 years young so have a lot of great years ahead of me! If you would like to donate to help towards Mia’s upcoming surgery in San Antonio next week, we offer the convenience of Paypal on our website missionpawsiblecc.org. email: info@missionpawsiblecc.org Phone: 361-4439492 - 361-277-1731 Facebook: www.facebook.com/ missionpawsiblecc Thank you very much for reading about Mia. A 15
Senior Moments
General Douglas MacArthur
By Dotson Lewis
Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s Note: As I was checking though the January anniversaries, I was reminded that General MacArthur was born on January 26, 1880. To me, he stands near the very top of the great men of the 20th century…I could not let this opportunity pass to review for you my friends, the Moon Monkeys, some of the events in this most remarkable man’s life. I was privileged to meet and talk to him a few times during my tour of duty in Japan, 194750. As many of you are aware, the Japanese people still consider him to be a deity. My thanks to historian David McCullough for his contributions to this article. David McCullough said: “You couldn’t shrug your shoulders at Douglas MacArthur,” “There was nothing bland about him, nothing passive about him, nothing dull about him. There’s no question about his patriotism, there’s no question about his courage, and there’s no question about his importance as one of the protagonists* of the 20th century.” Douglas MacArthur lived his entire life, from cradle to grave, in the United States Army. He spent his early years in remote sections of New Mexico, where his father, Arthur MacArthur Jr., commanded an infantry company charged with protecting settlers and railroad workers from the Indian “menace.” These years were very hard for Douglas’ mother, Mary Pinkney Hardy MacArthur, whose upbringing as a proper Southern lady had done little to prepare her for raising a family on dusty western outposts. But seen through a boy’s eyes, life at a place like Ft. Selden, New Mexico, was heady stuff. “My first memory was the sound of bugles,” Douglas MacArthur recalled in his “Reminiscences.” “It was here I learned to ride and shoot even before I could read or write, it was almost before I could walk or talk.” Even more importantly, by watching his father and listening to his mother, he learned that a MacArthur is always in charge.

What became a lasting connection with the Philippines began with Douglas’ first assignment out of West Point, when the young Lieutenant sailed to the islands to work with a corps of engineers. While on a surveying mission there, he recalled being “waylaid on a narrow jungle trail by two desperados, one on each side.” MacArthur responded without hesitation. “Like all frontiersmen, I was expert with a pistol. I dropped them both dead in their tracks, but not before one had blazed at me with an antiquated rifle.” Soon after this first brush with physical danger, MacArthur enjoyed excitement of a different kind, when he was assigned to accompany his father on an extended tour through Asia, where the General would review the military forces of eleven countries. The MacArthurs, Pinky included, were treated like royalty, and Douglas came away from the trip firmly convinced that America’s future, and his own, lay in Asia. One of Douglas’s next assignments included service as an aide in Theodore Roosevelt’s White House. But when he found himself in a tedious engineering assignment in Milwaukee in 1907, his performance dropped and he received a poor evaluation. To add to his confusion, he had fallen in love with a New York debutante named Fanniebelle, and his brilliant career prospects seemed to wane. But Douglas made amends in his next assignment, at the staff college at Leavenworth, and when his father died in 1912 he was transferred to the War Department in Washington, so that he could care for his mother. While there he was taken under the wing of Chief of Staff Leonard Wood, a protégé of his father, and his career was again firmly on track. In 1915 MacArthur was promoted to major and the following year became the Army’s first public relations officer, performing so well that he is largely credited with selling the American people on the Selective Service Act of 1917, as the country moved ever closer to joining the war in Europe. Even though his record to that point had been excellent, the WWI gave Douglas MacArthur his first real measure of fame. Quickly promoted to brigadier general, he helped lead the Rainbow Division, which he had helped create out of National Guard units before the war, through the thick of the fighting in France. With a flamboyant, romantic style matched only by real feats of courage on the battlefield, MacArthur became the most decorated American soldier of the war. While his peers were demoted to their pre-war ranks, MacArthur kept his through a plum new assignment as Superintendent of West Point. Although he antagonized many of the old guard, MacArthur made good on his mandate to drag the moribund Academy into the 20th century, enabling it to produce officers fit to lead the country in the type of modern war he had just experienced first-hand. He also managed to get married, to Louise Cromwell Brooks, a vivacious flapper and heiress very different from her spit-and-polish second husband. A minor scandal erupted when Chief of Staff John J. Pershing, with whom Louise had had an affair during the war, shipped MacArthur from West Point to a makeshift assignment in the Philippines. Although disappointed, MacArthur was glad to be back in his beloved islands; Louise, used to the glamorous society of cities like New York and Paris, was not pleased. Even after their return to the States in 1925, the marriage continued to deteriorate. Louise filed for divorce in 1928. Once again, MacArthur found solace in the Philippines, where he took command of the Army’s Philippine Department and renewed a friendship with the island’s leading politician, Manuel Quezon, whom he had known since 1903. Although he and Quezon failed in their bid to have MacArthur named governor of the Philippines, President Hoover helped take the sting out of it by naming MacArthur to the Army’s top job, Chief of Staff, in 1930. But the early ‘30s were a trying time to be Chief, when the Great Depression made Americans deaf to MacArthur’s warnings about the rising tide of world fascism. Despite his able leadership, the Army fell to all-time lows in strength. This, along with the damage to his reputation from the Bonus March of 1932, when he very visibly
led army troops in routing impoverished World War I vets from the capital, made MacArthur receptive to other opportunities. Once again, he was drawn to the Philippines. In 1935, his old friend Quezon, President of the newly created Philippine Commonwealth, invited him to return to Manila as head of a U.S. military mission charged with preparing the islands for full independence in 1946. The next few years were among the happiest in MacArthur’s life. On his way to Manila, he met and fell in love with 37-year-old Jean Marie Faircloth from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. When Pinky died shortly after their arrival in Manila, Jean helped fill the void, and her devotion would remain a source of strength for the rest of his life. After the birth of their son, Arthur MacArthur IV, the 58-year-old general proved a doting father. But their blissful life in Manila was slowly overshadowed by the growing threat posed by an expansionist Japan. MacArthur, despite the able assistance of top aide Dwight Eisenhower, would not have enough time or money to build a force capable of resisting the Japanese. When war finally came with the blow at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Philippines were doomed. MacArthur’s air force was quickly destroyed, his army shredded, and by January his forces had retreated to the Bataan peninsula, where they struggled to survive. From his command post on the island of Corregidor at the mouth of Manila Bay, MacArthur watched his world fall apart. But despite MacArthur’s poor showing in the Philippines, President Roosevelt knew he couldn’t let America’s most famous general fall to the enemy, and ordered him to withdraw to Australia. Although it ran counter to his notion of a soldier’s duty, MacArthur left his men facing sure destruction, comforted only by the belief that he might lead an army back to rescue them. For the next three years, the world watched as his personal quest, “I shall return,” became almost synonymous with the war in the Pacific. Although MacArthur’s path through the dense jungles of New Guinea was hardly imagined in the initial war plans, his single minded drive and resourcefulness made it one of the two prongs in the Allied drive to roll back the Japanese. Simultaneously fighting a two front war, one with the Japanese, the other with the U.S. Navy, who understandably saw the Pacific as theirs, MacArthur slowly gained momentum. In October of 1944 the world watched (not live) as he dramatically waded ashore at Leyte, and in the following months liberated the rest of the Philippines. On September 2, 1945, he presided over the Japanese surrender on board the “U.S.S. Missouri,” bringing an end to World War II.
“I Shall Return” His place as a leading figure of the 20th century already secure, MacArthur may have made his greatest contribution to history in the next five and a half years, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers in Japan. While initiating some policies and merely implementing others, by force of personality MacArthur became synonymous with the highly successful occupation. His GHQ staff helped a devastated Japan rebuild itself, institute a democratic government, and chart a course that has made it one of the world’s leading industrial powers. Yet by the late 1940s, MacArthur was increasingly bypassed by Washington, and it seemed his remarkable career might be over. But in June of 1950, the sudden outbreak of the Korean War thrust MacArthur back into the limelight. Placed in command of an Americanled coalition of United Nations forces, MacArthur reversed the dire military situation in the early months of the war with a brilliant amphibious assault behind North Korean lines at the Port of Inchon. But within weeks of this great triumph he and Washington miscalculated badly. MacArthur’s approach to the Chinese border triggered the entry of Mao’s Communist Chinese, and as 1951 dawned, they faced what he called “an entirely new war.” Although the able leadership of General Matthew B. Ridgway stabilized the military situation near the prewar boundary at the 38th parallel, MacArthur’s months of public and private bickering with the Truman administration soon came to a head. On April 11, 1951, the President relieved MacArthur, triggering a firestorm of protest over our strategy not only in Korea, but in the Cold War as a whole. As the last great general of World War II to come home, MacArthur received a hero’s welcome. Despite his dramatic televised address to a joint session of Congress, however, the issue died quickly, and with it any hopes MacArthur had of reaching the White House in 1952. True to his word, the old soldier “faded away” from the public eye, living quietly in New York until his death in 1964. While it’s questionable whether his storied life ever brought him complete satisfaction, one thing is clear: Douglas MacArthur had more than fulfilled his self-imposed destiny of becoming one of history’s great men. Dotson’s Other Note: *Main character; I looked up protagonist just to make sure. I know that there are many different views of MacArthur as a man and/or soldier. I would like to hear your thoughts regarding General of the Army Douglas A. MacArthur (“MacArthursan” to the Japanese). Please call or Email me with your opinion regarding the foregoing. It’s great to hear that you read, and disagree or agree with what I write; thank you for your comments. Please call or Email. Phone: 361949-7681; Email: dlewis1@stx.rr.com The next Veterans Roundtable Meeting will be Tuesday, January 19, 9-11 AM, in Room 126, Del Mar College, Center For Economic Development, 3209 S. Staples. We are also going to have a Roundtable meeting 6:30-8:30 PM (Same place as the morning meeting except Room 117 instead of Room 126). All Veterans, their families and anyone interested in Veterans affairs, are invited. …Hope to see you there.

STATE Legislative Reforms to Help Curb and Eradicate Human Trafficking By Todd Hunter, District 32
Since the 84th Texas Legislative Session has come to a close, I want to take this opportunity to look at an important bill that I had the privilege to work on for our area. Each legislative session, there are a number of priorities facing the state and it is important that we examine some of these pieces of legislation that will be impacting the Coastal Bend. House Bill 10 is an important bill that we passed this session dealing with human trafficking prevention in the state of Texas. I want to highlight some of the central themes and background information about HB 10. A few years ago, the Human Trafficking Prevention Task Force was created to have a statewide partnership between law enforcement agencies, social service providers, nongovernmental organizations, legal representatives, and state agencies that are fighting on the front line against human trafficking. The task force works to develop policies and procedures to fulfill that purpose, and proposes legislative recommendations to better protect adult and child victims of human trafficking. In the months leading up to the 84th Legislative Session, I had the privilege of serving on a joint House and Senate Interim Committee to work with the task force and develop legislation to address human trafficking in our state. The resulting legislation, HB 10, seeks to prevent and ultimately eliminate human trafficking by enacting the recommendations made by the task force in the 2014 Human Trafficking Prevention Task Force Report. The bill amends current law relating to certain criminal and civil consequences of trafficking of persons, compelling prostitution, and certain other related criminal offenses, to the prevention, prosecution, and punishment of those offenses, and to compensation paid to victims of those offenses. It is important to know that human trafficking is not exclusive to one segment of society. Human trafficking involves victims of all races, age groups, both males and females, and United States citizens, as well as non-citizens. Individuals seeking to force people into human trafficking do not discriminate amongst their victims and often prey upon those who are most vulnerable. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for one of three purposes:

Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
Austin music icon Paul Ray dead at 73… I spent the weekend in the Austin area and really enjoyed myself this time. My goal was to help my niece move into her new place and then run into town to check out the new Antone’s and catch a few shows. I did just that. On Friday morning as I was getting ready to leave, I saw a post on Facebook that
to Austin for the first time: Clifton Chenier, Bobby Bland, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin…and on and on. I worked off and on for Clifford for a number of years both at his clubs and running the booking agency for his record labels. So, I knew the members of the Cobras and T-Birds pretty well and spent time with them for a while. I’m trying to keep this short because I really could write a book here on the evolution of the early Austin music scene. It was all around me and because of my involvement with Antone’s, I was privy to a lot of the shows and clubs going on at the time such as the Armadillo World Headquarters, Liberty Lunch, Castle Creek, Soap Creek, La Zona Rosa, The Opry House and so on. And the folks that worked these other bars, especially the Armadillo, had free entry into Antone’s as well. It was quite incestuous back then.
You’re one of the boys now…
Austin music icon Paul Ray dead at 73. reported Paul Ray had died. Paul Ray is a music icon in Austin whom I first met in the mid 70’s. Originally from Dallas (make that Oak Cliff), Paul migrated with a group of musicians who would eventually pioneer the blues scene in early Austin: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall, Keith Ferguson, Denny Freeman, Lewis Cauldry. The first time I heard these fellows play was with their band Storm at the storied One Knight on Red River where Stubb’s BBQ is now. The One Knight was the consummate dive bar and was in operation for about seven years. The owner, Roger “One Knight” Collins and his partner Summer Dog were there before Antone’s, before the Armadillo, before Soap Creek. I remember the graffiti on the men’s room wall that said, “Eat lead Johnny Law.” Paul Ray was the singer in Storm and paved the way for his famous band, Paul Ray and the Cobras. The original Cobras featured Stevie Vaughan and Denny Freeman on guitars, Rodney Craig on drums, Alex Napier on bass and Joe Sublett on tenor sax. This band smoked. Paul Ray in his prime was sight to behold. I can hear him now, “Other days…”
But I remember one time around 1977 or so, I was at the Cobra’s House… the clubhouse where Rodney Craig the drummer lived on Bluebonnet. The band would all meet at Rodney’s before a gig and leave from there. As the band members straggled in slowly, we found ourselves waiting on one of the guys who was running late. So as we sat around in Rodney’s living room killing time, I remember Paul kind of surveying the situation and looked over at me and said in his gentle voice, “Well Ronnie, it looks like you’re one of the boys now.” I felt like I had just won the lottery. Paul Ray said I was one of the boys. I couldn’t believe it. For a kid of 25 years old working the bars of Austin, it just didn’t get any better. Paul was the ring leader and his word made it so. I would have jumped off the house for him.
Paul Ray and the Cobras…
Paul Ray tribute at Antone’s
1978 Cobras poster. Paul Ray and the Cobras had a good run, but eventually Paul developed throat problems and couldn’t sing anymore. He had several surgeries but never did get his true strong voice back. The band eventually evolved into another incantation with Junior Medlow on lead vocals, Derek O’Brien on guitar, Larry Lange on bass and several different horn players… the one constant was always Rodney Craig. Paul eventually became a DJ at KUT-FM, the radio station at the University of Texas. His show, Twine Time, is a piece of Austin music history in itself. It came on Saturday evening and was Paul Ray at his best. Paul’s knowledge of blues and old rock and roll was encyclopedic and we were all his students. He was also one of the organizers and MC of the yearly Austin Chronicle Music Awards.

Austin’s Godfather of Blues, W.C. Clark played Antone’s this weekend The new Antone’s… So, by the time I made it to Austin on Friday, social media had exploded with the news of his death and it was on every local news station and in the newspaper. It was obvious that Paul Ray had touched the lives of many Austinites and the city was in mourning. Many stories and old photos dominated Facebook and the whole town showed respect. On Saturday, I grabbed up my old running buddy, Charlie “Preacher” Keen of Lake Travis, TX and we set out to hear some music. I was determined to check out the newly opened Antone’s where W.C. Clark was playing. It was a cold night in downtown Austin, and we ended up killing some time at the lobby bar in the Driscoll Hotel (directly across the street from the original Antone’s) before wandering around 6th Street, waiting for
When we finally did get to Antone’s, the doorgirl of many, many years, Ilse Haynes, greeted us with a hug and we all lamented over Paul’s demise. Susan Antone (Clifford’s sister) is still involved with the club and had set up a touching display of candles and a photo of Paul and of the Cobras over in one corner. Preacher and I listened to W.C. for a while and then headed over to C Boys to hear the great Barbara Lynn
Stewart and Garrett Mann and Ronnie Narmour at the Saxon Pub.

I had booked Barbara Lynn many times through the years and it seemed only fitting that we were at this show. After that we stopped by the Saxon Pub and ran into our pals Stewart Mann and his brother Garrett Mann of the band Statesboro Revue. They had just played and were followed by another familiar face, Mike Stinson (Houston, TX). It was a fun, full night of music and I was on top of the world. My mind was ripe with nostalgia and my heart was both heavy and on fire. RIP Paul Ray. And thanks for letting me into the club.
