Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
On the local scene: Free Beer/Uel Jackson/Carol Elliott/ Uncle Willey…
so far and it just keeps getting better. I just love watching those Winter Texans dance. Some of them are pretty darn good. On Wednesdays, the very popular PA Rockers play every week at Bernie’s and always fill the house with their oldies rock and roll. On Fridays the ten piece big band era, Medicare Band, plays each week at Sharkey’s and they are always good for filling the dance floor. All of these shows start early and finish early and have NO cover charge.
Inside Llewyn Davis… On a slightly different note, I got invited to watch Screen Actors Guild film nominee, Inside Llewyn Davis, at the home of local

DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend…
Justin Timberlake in Inside Llewyn Davis Carol Elliott played the Tarpon last Friday
Well I caught a good deal of local talent around the island this week. Our Winter Texan friends have literally been streaming into town and it’s been fun seeing all the familiar faces back around. The Tarpon Ice House has been one of the focal spots, especially on Thursday when the Free Beer Band holds court. I mentioned in my last column that the Ice House will be closing in early February, so you should really make a concerted effort to catch one of the last Thursday shows or the Open Mic Hosted by Uel Jackson on Sundays. Carol Elliott played there last Friday and will play there again on January 24th (5:30-7:30). She certainly has a big Winter Texan following. The Gaff’s belt sander races also brought Northern friends out in mass last Saturday when Uncle Lesley Willey played. Willey also played Shorty’s the night before. He’s a true island treasure--making music on this island for over half a century.
Just another reminder to Winter Texans: Mike Williams & Paul Taylor/Riptide/PA Rockers/Medicare Band…
The PA Rockers play every Wednesday at Bernies.
I mentioned in my last column (dedicated to Winter Texans) that there were several weekly shows I thought they’d find pleasing and I want to briefly remind you of them again. The smooth as silk duo lounge act, Mike Williams and Paul Taylor, play every Monday at Giggity’s (5:30-9:00). These guys are spot on with old school torch songs from such legends as Frank Sinatra, Cole Porter, Nat King Cole, and Ray Charles. Keep in mind that Giggity’s is not just a music venue. It’s a full service restaurant and runs an “All You Can Eat Catfish” special on Mondays AND the kitchen stays open til 1:00 a.m. every night. On Tuesdays, the 50’s and 60’s oldies band, Riptide, plays from 6:30-10:00 at Giggity’s. They’ve done a couple of Tuesdays
actress Bonnie Isaac. Isaac is member of the Screen Actors Guild and was selected as one of the judges for this year’s Screen Actors Guild awards. In the line of duty she received 37 movies on DVD, and similar to Mission Impossible, she also received instructions to destroy each DVD after viewing. Luckily I got to view the aforementioned movie about a 60’s folksinger in Greenwich Village. The leading role was played by Justin Timberlake. I’d heard some critics give him a thumbs down, but I thought he did a credible job—acting, singing and finger picking. The neat thing about this Coen Brothers film was they filmed each song sung in its entirety which is something one rarely sees in a Hollywood movie. It really felt like I was there in the smoky hole-in-the-wall Gaslight Cafe watching a folk revival singer get his start. Although I doubt the movie will be a box office hit, it did a good job showing what the music business was like in the early 60’s. In the end the traditional ten verse ballads and sea chanties sung by Timberlake were edged out by the topical consciousness of songwriters like Leonard Cohen, Tom Paxton and Bob Dylan who eventually transformed the genre, and a generation, with their new take on “folk” music. I especially liked the character played by actor John Goodman in this movie. His cameo as a quick witted, sarcastic cripple with a spiteful view of humanity and a bit of a heroin problem was both hilarious and revolting. I’ve always appreciated the Coen’s treatment of the absurd. Of course this movie will be compared to other Coen masterpieces, Oh, Brother Where Art Thou, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, etc. I was entertained the entire way through and thought it was a nice little odd ball story about a slice in time and music. Though Inside Llewyn Davis is perhaps not a major work, but it did the job for me. I give it three and a half flip flops.

This weekend has some great talent to offer. On Friday, blues rocker Rich Lockhart will be at Giggity’s and everyone’s favorite, Russell “The Love Muscle” Edge will be at Shorty’s. On Saturday, the island country crooner, Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX) will play Giggity’s and our own local C&W star, Melissa Brooke, will play a duo gig at Shorty’s with Mike Stite. Both of these shows top my DO NOT MISS LIST. And to be perfectly honest, they were hand picked because Saturday night is my birthday and I know these guys won’t let me down. Todd Dorn has a tow sack full of original material that will keep your boots scootin’ across the dance floor. Miss Brooke is a little firecracker and her stronger than cowboy coffee voice will get your heart a pumpin’.
Melissa Brooke will play Shorty’s this Saturday.

On the horizon… And on the near horizon, look for shows on Friday, January 24th by the Melissa Brooke Band at Giggity’s, Carol Elliott at The Tarpon Ice House (5:30 – 7:30), the over the top string band Independent Thieves at Shorty’s and my favorite band of priests, the Knotty Pines at the Gaff (6:00). The Knotty Pines is an interesting ensemble consisting of the Reverands James Derkits and Kevin Schubert. A third priest joined them last June when the full Knotty Pines Band played the Gaff. This time the banjo playing priest can’t make it so you can leave your ear plugs at home. Just kidding. Banjo’s are dandy. Sometimes. If I’m wearing ear plugs. Anyway, Kevin and James have been playing music together for over twenty years, and their rock-bluegrass-country music could best be described as Americana. Kevin is the priest at St. George’s Austin, and he will
Keith Sykes will play the 3rd Coast Theater on January 25th.
Sykes (Memphis, TN) will return to the Third Coast Music Theater. Sykes is probably most noted for writing the “Volcano Song” (I don’t know where I’m a gonna go when the volcano blows…) for Jimmy Buffett. Sykes was once part of the Coral Reefer Band and has written songs for the likes of Marcia Ball, Rodney Crowell and Roseanne Cash, has five studio recordings to his credit and has appeared on Saturday Night Live.
