Did you watch the Grammys? Allow me a bit of a rant here. I watched the Grammys this week or let’s put it this way: I watched as much of the Grammys as I could stomach. I am ever amazed at the spectacle that popular music has stooped to in this day and age. Case in point, Pink on a rope… Barnum and Bailey comes to mind. The “song and dance” has risen Kacey Musgraves is to an all time low following her arrow at when presenting a the Grammys song at the Grammy Awards entails the singer wearing a next to nothing body stocking as she bounces from the ceiling on a bungie cord. All she needed was flaming batons and a vapor trail streaming from her you know what. And what about this country artist, Casey Muskgraves? She shows up in a shorter than short mini poodle skirt with a beyond plunging neckline and boots that have flashing lights on them to sing a song about following her arrow. I may be showing my age here, but REALLY? I mean country music artists have always had a flair for tacky fashion, but that went way beyond any rhinestone suit Porter Wagner could have ever donned. And what about these rapping robot guys? I’m officially demanding that rap go away right now. No more! I declare it dead and a threat to national security. Also,
Pink on a rope at the Grammys I think Ozzy Osborne, Paul McCartney, Madonna and Metallica need to peacefully go to their respective retirement homes and desist the cosmetic surgery. And, I’m a little nervous about Darius Rucker winning for Wagon Wheels because now that song will NEVER go away. I did think it was very cool though that Texans Guy Clark won for “Best Folk Album” and Gary Clark, Jr. won for “Best Traditional R&B Performance”. Those guys deserved it. OK, I’m done… all comments can be addressed to Dale Rankin at editor@islandmoon.com.
Folk hero, Pete Seeger, dies at 94… One of my all time biggest heroes and national treasure, Pete Seeger, died this week at the age of 94. The term, “voice of a generation” more than applies here. The American Civil Rights movement found its anthem when Seeger sang, “We shall overcome…” in the 60’s and his voice became synonymous with a generation eager for the times to change. An untiring environmentalist and political activist, he was best known for such folk standards as If I Had a Hammer, This Land is Your Land, Turn, Turn,
Folk icon Pete Seeger dies at 94
Turn and Where Have All the Flowers Gone and is credited with inspiring several generations of artists who were called to social justice, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan (who called him a saint) and Joan Baez who said, “we owe our careers to him”. When asked about his religious or spiritual views, Seeger replied: “I feel most spiritual when I’m out in the woods.” The world has lost one a giant of a man.
On the local scene…
The Independent Thieves played Shorty’s last Friday night You can’t walk outside without tripping over a Winter Texan, but that’s not a bad thing. Most of our northern friends are actually devoted music lovers, plus they don’t mind these little Texas cold snaps… they think it’s charming that we all duck for cover when our temperatures Uel Jackson and plummet to 40°… and daughter SIerra it’s minus 20° back home. I’m finding, performed at the last in spite of the cold Sunday Open Jam weather we’ve been at the Tarpon Ice having lately, the House music remains as hot as ever. My favorite priest from Trinity By the Sea, Father James Derkits played the Gaff last Friday with his preacher buddy from Austin, Father Kevin Schubert, collectively known at the Knotty Pines. They put on a charming show of original songs and even got Tiffany Duckworth and Jason and Ty Morris in on their finale, Will the Circle Be Unbroken. I also caught sets by the amazing string band, Independent Thieves, at Shorty’s, the always rockin’ The Knotty Pines with Melissa Brooke Fathers James Derkits Band and the sexy and Kevin Schubert Edna de la Garza played the Gaff last and Lyrical Bynge at Giggity’s, and Friday

Dennis Sullivan performs at the Tarpon Ice House with Uel Jackson and Jack Gant the super harmonic father/daughter team, Uel and Sierra Jackson at the Tarpon Ice House. Without a doubt, young Sierra Jackson has a voice blessed by the angels. I am always riveted when she is on stage.
Last weekend of the Tarpon Ice House… With the Tarpon Ice House closing next week, many ex-pats have been returning to the nest to say their goodbyes this week. We were pleasantly surprised when our great friends, Dennis and Marilynn Sullivan popped in to town to pay homage. You may remember Dennis as the multi-talented man who supervised the building of the new Ferry Operations office and sings Willie Nelson (et al) with a voice beyond beautiful. The Sullivans moved to Kansas in April last year and didn’t tell anyone they were coming this week. They showed up on Sunday and really made the last official Sunday jam at the Ice House a special occasion. Brother, we jammed ‘til the cows came home. It will be more of the same all weekend at the Ice House as owner, Paul Fain, expects a steady stream of musicians to show up and play.
DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend… Tonight, Thursday, the 30th, Americana dynamo Casey Donahew will play Brewster Street and our beloved Free Beer Band will play their last Tarpon gig before moving their show over to Giggity’s, every Thursday starting
Micky and the Motorcars will play Stingrays on Super Bowl Sunday 3-5
in February. Founders, Steve Goldstein and Crawford Brown have played every Thursday at the Ice House for over three years now and are planning a big blow out for their final show there. On Friday, January 31st, local folky alt rocker, Tiffany Duckworth, will play Shorty’s, Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays will play Giggity’s and Bryan Matlock will play Stingrays. On Saturday, February 1st, you have quite a few options. The amazing duo, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines (Austin, TX) will be at Third Coast Theater, Red Giant will be at Giggity’s, John Boyd and Passing Strangers (San Antonio, TX) will be at Stingrays, Bob Schneider (Austin, TX) will be at Brewster Street and much admired singer-songwriter, Carol Elliott, will perform at Shorty’s (6:00 PM) with some of her musical friends such as Tiffany Tuesday, James Derkits, Tom Doran, Dennis Sullivan and yours truly. Also on Saturday, the good folks over at the Farley Boat Works on Avenue C have started a “First Saturday Volunteer Appreciation” night with a fish fry and open jam starting around 5:00. I went to the first one and it was a total blast with musicians Denny Larson, Barney Farley, Rick Reichenbach, Rick Pratt, Bob Reed and Val Synenko in attendance. On Super Bowl Sunday, February 2nd, Stingrays has a big show going with a performance by Red Dirt giants, Micky and the Motorcars playing before the game from 3-5 and hometown hero Melissa Brooke playing after the game. They’ve got a big tent set up for the bands and will be celebrating this event as their Grand Opening as well.
On the horizon…
Briefly, on the near horizon look for shows by Stoney LaRue, Pinata Protest, John Cortez, Joe Mack and Thomas Trapp, Alan Jackson, Gordon Lightfoot, Wayne “The Train” Hancock, Milk Drive, Jerry Diaz, Richard Leigh, Larry Joe Taylor, Ruben V, Cody Canada and the Departed and Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones.
