Amberjack Sliders to go…

Island Moon

soul sound that grabs you right where you live. I don’t really know who to compare them to, but they are in the same vein as the Dirty River Boys or the Wheeler Brothers and that’s good company to keep. You can catch Folk Family at Brewster Street on March 20 with Chris Knight.

Jim Dugan… Clarissa Serna will perform at the South Texas Ice House on March 14

This chopper from Austin just dropped in to Giggity’s last week for some amberjack sliders to go From the “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” department… I can hear it now, “Honey, why don’t you run on down to Port Aransas and pick me up some of those scrumptious amberjack sliders that I love so much at that place with the funny name. Giggity’s I think it is.” “But Sweetie, we’re in Austin and tonight’s my poker night, but hey, no prob… I’ll just take the chopper.” And, that’s pretty much what happened, right in the middle of the afternoon in plain daylight in front of God and everybody, a helicopter landed in the vacant lot right across from Giggity’s and the Tarpon Inn. The pilot and his friends got out, had lunch, ordered his sliders “to go” and flew out like they had good sense. But not before the po po paid a quick visit and told them not to be landing their helicopter in the middle of town anymore because we got laws against that sort of thing. All I have to say about that is, man, those amberjack sliders must be pretty good.

Folk Family Revival…

Rich Tellez sits in with Jim Dugan last Saturday at Shorty’s Also last week I caught shows by Jim Dugan, the Free Beer Band and Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters. Jim Dugan is new on my radar. I find him interesting. His singing is a little flat. His guitar playing is a bit lackluster. He looks like he just got off a tractor somewhere near Dumas. His songs are the same standard tunes that can be heard in any garden variety Texas beer joint on a Saturday night. But there’s something about the guy that draws you in. I barely know the guy but am proud to call him a friend. By the end of the night at his show at Shorty’s, he had the whole room swinging and singing and dancing. It was a happy place. I heard on the same night that the spring breakers hit the island, there were a dozen fights at the disco down the street… but at Shorty’s it was all smiles. Yeah, I like this Jim Dugan. He’s a buddy of mine, you know. BTW, this picture of Jim was taken with another old friend of mine from San Antonio, Rich Tellez, who plays trumpet with Miss Neesie and Earfood (among others). That was an interesting combo, Jim Dugan singing John Prine with Rich Tellez on trumpet, but it actually worked.

DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend…

Folk Family Revival played the Back Porch last Saturday Has anyone else noticed that our sleepy little island has been invaded by several kazillion college students. Yes boys and girls, spring break has sprung and we are officially back in season. And right now, I am here by serving notice to all our winter Texan friends, y’all go home now. We’ll see you next winter. We love you, get out of here… either that or get Texas license plates. It’s now time to embrace all things tourist and see if our patience can make it ‘til Labor Day. But the good news is, along with the masses comes great live music calendars. The Back Porch kicked off the season last weekend with two great shows with Davin James and Folk Family Revival. I’ve been raving about Folk Family Revival since the first time I heard them a year or so ago and couldn’t be more stoked that they finally made it to Port A. These boys have a unique, bluesy folky sorta gospel sorta

I have a ton of shows to tell you about so pay attention, this is good stuff. Tonight, Thursday the 13th, I have several recommendations: the Cody Angel Trio will play the Back Porch, the new island all star band, the Jetty Monsters (Chris Jordan, Uel Jackson, Preacher Williams and Russell Edge) will debut at Shorty’s, the Free Beer Band will be at Giggity’s, and Brewster Street will have a big Americana show with the Turnpike Troubadours and Micky and the Motorcars. On Friday, the 14th, the absolutely amazing Della Mae (Boston, MA) will return to the Back Porch having just returned from the Grammy Awards where they were nominated for Best Bluegrass Band. They played the Porch

Della Mae, an all female bluegrass band from Boston, will play the Back Porch on Friday.

last year and won my heart. They are five megatalented women from around the country, who were hand picked for their individual talents. The founder, Kimber Ludiker, is a two time National Fiddle Champion whose brother, Dennis Ludiker, plays with Milk Drive. All the women in Della Mae are as talented as they are beautiful and trust me, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW. Also on Friday, another beautiful and talented country singer, Melissa Brooke will be at Giggity’s with her band, Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX) will play the first of two nights at Shorty’s and Clarissa Serna will be at

next night. Also on the 21st, the great string band, Independent Thieves, will be at Shorty’s, and guitar master, Hamilton Loomis (Houston, TX) will be shredding at Dr. Rockits. On the 22nd, Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys will bring their jumping blues to Giggity’s, that’s always a great show, Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang will be at the Back Porch and Mark McKinney will be at the South Texas Ice House.

On the horizon…

Kyle Park will play Concrete Street this Saturday the South Texas Ice House, having just returned from her appearance on The Voice television show where she nailed the Cranberries song, Zombie. Maybe she’ll tell us who won. On Saturday, the 15th Spring Break will be peaking and nothing short of full goose crazy. The big show on Saturday is at Concrete Street with Randy Rogers, Kyle Park, Cody Johnson and William Clark Green. Something tells me there will be a few gals wearing short shorts and cowboy boots at this one. Also on Saturday, Metal Shop will play Brewster, Cruise Control will play the Porch, Lyrical Bynge will be at Giggity’s and 90 Proof will play the Executive Surf Club. Don’t forget, Monday is St. Patty’s Day and the Open Jams will be raging at Giggity’s, Dr. Rockits and the Surf Club.

Next weekend… Briefly, as I mentioned before, Folk Family Revival and Chris Knight will play Brewster on the 20th and Pat Green will play there the

The legendary Merle Haggard will play Selena Auditorium on March 30

I would be remiss in my duties not to tell you about a few big shows on the horizon. Honky tonker, Bo Porter (Austin, TX) will play Shorty’s on March 28th, 60’s psychedelic super-stars, Bubble Puppy, will play Brewster on the 29th. Bubble Puppy had the 60’s hit, Hot Smoke and Sassafras and had close ties to the Coastal Bend. The late Roy Cox played bass for the Puppy and lived in Port A. And now the BIG NEWS… Merle Haggard will be playing Selena Auditorium on March 30. I’ll be gushing more about that show next week. And it’s a ways out, but Shorty’s will be celebrating their 68th birthday on April 12th with a big all day blow-out ala’ Pig Party. Also on April 12th, Patrice Pike will be playing show at the Gaff. More on those shows later, too. Stay safe out there. It’s a zoo right now.
