Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

R.I.P. Peanut & Riley…

Rest in Peace Peanut You were a goodern! This last week was a bad time to be a Moon dog around here. My little wiener dog, Peanut, who I’ve had for 15 years, died early Saturday morning and Dale and Jan Rankin’s beloved Riley P. Dog checked out on Monday afternoon. Needless to say, we’re a mess at the Moon Monkey camp. We loved our dogs dearly. Riley and Peanut were old friends and I’m sure they’re up in heaven now, sniffing each others butts. Wooo… it’s been a tough week. RIP my furry friends. You are missed.

that include Thomas Trapp and Sky Smeed,.. both noteworthy Okie musicians in their own right . Carter and Joe Mack have a unique chemistry about them and their music is pure magic. Carter has Carter Sampson and a sexy Okie drawl that pulls you in to Joe Mack played Shorty’s last weekend every song whether harmonizing or taking the lead. Her voice is the stuff legends are made of… Kitty Wells or Wanda Jackson comes to mind. And Joe Mack on guitar and banjo is as fast and clean as a straight razor on steroids. I’ve known these artists for a couple of years now, and consider them both good friends. They were there for me when Peanut died last weekend and showed me the enormous metal they are made of. They will be back in August and best believe this will be a show you shouldn’t miss. These guys are the real deal and I love ‘em.

Oh Sister Where Art Thou?

Delbert & Clay McClinton update…

playing shows. This is definitely another DO NOT MISS show… Looks like I’m going to have a very busy weekend.

Elsewhere this weekend… Elsewhere this weekend… On Friday, catch our favorite rocking Austin Heat will play the Back Porch folky, Ruben Limas and the and Giggity’s this weekend. Rocking Jays at Giggity’s and singer, Brian Scartocci, is one power packed our favorite vampire band, Ray explosion waiting to go off. He was a finalist T and the City Crew on The Voice a couple of years ago, which tells (Aransas Pass, TX) at the you “the man got talent!” When he falls to his Flat’s Lounge. And on knees and wails, girls’ hearts throb openly. Saturday, the nicest guy in The guitarist, Austin Roach, is the band’s country music, Thomas founder and namesake. You’d be hard pressed Michael Riley will return to find a finer picker anywhere. The keyboadist, to the Back Porch. Riley “Small” Don Burrows is an old friend of mine is the man responsible from Lubbock and used to play in the Joe Ely for coining the crowd Band… he lets his fingernails grow so they pleasing “Holler and a click when he plays the piano. The rhythm Swaller” toast between section, Dexter Walker on drums and Freddy songs. I’ve noticed other Marshall on five string bass are as tight and hill country acts adopting Thomas Michael funky as they come. Together, these boys will it from time to time. Riley will play the rock your world. These shows undoubtedly and Thomas is a wonderful, Back Porch on indubitably get my PICK OF THE WEEK. Do heartfelt story teller Saturday night yourself a favor and go to both shows… they are and songwriter. AND… THAT good. another show to watch for on Saturday, Uel Jackson will play his regular “First Saturday” Hold Fast Fables… show at Shorty’s. Also on Saturday, the dynamic John Boyd (San Antonio, TX) of the rocking 80’s dance band, Passing Strangers, will be at Stingrays. Mr. Boyd is an enormous talent, with or without a band.

On the horizon…

Hold Fast Fables will play Shorty’s on Friday. Delbert and Clay McClinton are recovering nicely

Lisa Morales and David Spencer played the Back Porch last Saturday night.

Here’s an update on Delbert and Clay McClinton’s medical situations: Grammy winner Delbert McClinton underwent emergency triple bypass heart surgery on Monday, April 7th, after experiencing chest pains before a gig in St. Augustine, FL. According to a source close to the family, the Texas music legend’s ticker is working beautifully now, and his doctors have attributed his impressive post surgery X-rays to the lung capacity he’s built by singing every night. He’s expected to leave the hospital by week’s end so he can return to his son, Clay, who sustained a serious head injury in a car accident on March 21st. Clay was moved from intensive care to a rehab unit where he is recovering remarkable quickly and expected to make a full recovery. Clay wrote this on his Facebook page last night, “Went out for lunch today! The Doctor said that the last surgery will be within the next two weeks...our fingers are crossed that we’ll be home in three weeks. We will never be able to thank everybody enough for all of the love, support and prayers, and words cannot possibly describe our gratitude for the wonderful people in our lives.”

It was also nice to see old friends, Lisa Morales and her guitar wizard husband, David Spencer at the Back Porch on Saturday. Lisa and her sister Roberta Morales used to run my Tuesday night Singer-songwriter Open Mic at the Lab in San Antonio (circa: 2000). At the time, they had just moved to S.A. from Houston where they had made a pretty big name for themselves as the Sisters Morales. As the “Sisters”, these ladies toured endlessly and recorded beautiful records, even hooking up with Los Lobos heavyweight David Hildalgo to produce. The Sisters Morales had a special blend of harmonies and would shift between rock, ballads and Latin songs effortlessly. Roberta and Lisa decided to make a go of it on their own a couple of years ago, much to the dismay of their fans, and I must admit, I missed hearing those heavenly harmonies last Saturday. Don’t get me wrong, Lisa is a phenomenal talent, but it’s just not the same. I know I’ve whined about this break-up before but the Back Porch folks had originally booked this date as a “Sisters Morales” show and I got my hopes up. I’ll get over it.

Okie invasion…

DO NOT MISS LIST

My all time favorite Okies, Carter Sampson (Oklahoma City, OK) and Joe Mack (Tahlequah, OK), hit the island last weekend for a two night stint at Shorty’s. You might remember these two… Carter is the self-proclaimed Queen of Oklahoma and Joe Mack is the Happy Mad Scientist Guitar Monster that I’ve been bragging about for a couple of years now. They’ve been here a few times before in various combinations

Austin Heat… Your choices are good and plenty this weekend. For starters, the radically happening Austin Heat (Austin, TX) will be back on the island for a scorching two nighter… Friday at the Back Porch and Saturday at Giggity’s. The “Heat” are a funky rocking soul band that hit on all cylinders at all times. Their lead

Also on Friday, the unlikely trio, Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) will return to Shorty’s for the first time this season. I’ll let their online bio speak for them, “Telling tales of love, loss, and island life through music, Hold Fast Fables tells tales through their organic sound, driven by soulful three-part vocal harmonies keeping the integrity of the mood and lyrics portraying love, loss, and island life. Enhanced with melodic cello delivering sophisticated accompaniment to the acoustic guitar and light percussion, this new group has created a sound all of their own.” The band includes Marc Borde (acoustic guitar), Claire Sieverman (cello) and Matthew Beard (light percussion). It’s likely that this band will sail to Port A from their last gig… it’s been known to happen. Borde is also an author, having penned the delightful “Guitar Strings and Sailing Things” about sailing around the Gulf

Coming up shortly, on May 9th Red Giant will play Giggity’s, the Rusty Brothers will play the Back Porch, the John Cortez Blues Band will play Shorty’s and the Crystals will play the Sunset Sounds concert series put on by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Rec Department in Roberts Point Park. On May 10th, Jim Dugan will be at Shorty’s, Todd Dorn will be at Giggity’s, W.C. Clark will be at the Back Porch, Brian Keane will be at the Third Coast Theater and the recently relocated Melissa Brooke Band will be at Stingrays. In the near future, watch for shows by Billy Snipes, blacktopGYPSY, Jesse Dayton, Clarissa Serna, Mandy Rowden & Billy Abel, Danica Bird, Aloha Dave and Paul Thorne. Also the annual Songwriters Showcase has announced their show this year on May 18th and the lineup includes Tim Miler & Perry Wing, Carol Elliott, Todd Dorn, Hamp Brockman & Janet Drew, James Derkits, L.Leon Sands & Sierra Dawn, Guy Le Roux, Tiffany Duckworth, Tyler McCumber, Melissa Brooke, Jef Wilson and Woodie Ray Lawson with Deb Dault.
