Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com
I got Lucky last week… I got Lucky last week… literally. My friend Amy Myers knew my li ttle Doxie, Peanut, had recently died and also knew how much I missed my dog. She was 17 and I had her for 15 years. So when her Facebook friend, Connie Beane, put out an appeal to the public to save a young Dachshund pup at the San Antonio Humane Society from being euthanized, Amy put the wheels in motion and notified me. “Ronnie,
super sweet music. Chances are you know these talented folk: Lela Caldwell and Bron Doyle. Lela has been making great music on this island for many years. She plays that guitar just like ringing a bell and in many diverse styles. I’ve heard her shred a six string in blues, rock, techno, classical and classics. But she pulled a new one on me the other night when she broke into some Latin jazz. Enter Bron. Bron is the Bron from Bron’s Beach Carts on Avenue G. His carts are everywhere. You can’t miss them. What you might not know is, Bron has become quite the accomplished percussionist. He took a bunch of lessons from our resident conga player, Luis Villareal (of Triggerfish fame) and picked it up really fast. If you ever go to his house, you’ll notice that it’s become a hand drum museum of sorts with a djembe, marimbas, steel drum, congas, bongos, frontier, all kind of shakers… he’s really taking this thing seriously. And I think he and Lela have found something special here. They’ve been playing Giggity’s and La Playa. It’s nice… really nice. Word on the street is…. two thumbs up!
Scattered shots…
The patron saints of doomed dogs- Dylan Stewart, Cilia McKinley, Connie Beane and Bruce Stewart with Ronnie and Lucky. this dog is perfect for you” she said. It had only been a week since Peanut died and the wound was still fresh… maybe too fresh to even think about another dog so soon. But, I said I’d check it out and that’s when I found out about the network of saints out there who are dedicated to saving every dog on death row they can by fostering and finding them permanent homes. Port A resident, Connie Beane is one of these people. I soon came to learn that this lady does this solely for the gratitude of knowing that she helped save the life of one of God’s creatures. There’s no hidden agenda here. So, after seeing a couple of pictures of “George” on Facebook, I agreed to give the little fella a try. Connie assured me that I could return him to the shelter if it didn’t work out. She had some friends in San Antonio (Celia McKinley, Dylan Stewart and Bruce Stewart) of the same ilk that would drive George to Port A. This was on Saturday… George was to be put to sleep on Monday. No pressure. So on Saturday I went to the Port A Animal Shelter and adopted George. It was a really special moment in my life. These people who made this happen for me are amazing. They took care of all the expenses of neutering and vaccinating and wouldn’t even take gas money from me. So I took George home and we both fell in love with each other. But I decided George didn’t fit him and he seemed like a pretty lucky mutt to me. So Lucky it is… like I said, I got Lucky last week.
Austin Heat tore it up all weekend in Port A Last weekend was definitely a goodern for live music. For starters, the amazing rocking soul team, Austin Heat, was in town for a two nighter at the Back Porch and Giggity’s.. They ripped the head off of both shows. It was great to see my old pals… I’ve known the pianist, Don Burrows, since the old days in Lubbock when he used to play with Joe Ely. And over at Shorty’s, the beautifully harmonic Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) played their first show of the season. Those guys have a mesmerizing sound that no one else has. I adore the cello parts in their arrangements. They’ll be back on June 27th. And mean while over at the Back
Lela Caldwell and Bron Doyle played an evening of Latin tinged jazz last Wednesday
Hold Fast Fables played Shorty’s last Friday Porch, Thomas Michael Riley, gave another stellar performance to a SRO crowd. Riley has that super smooth baritone and a shoebox full of original, heartfelt songs. He is certainly a patriot and appreciates our military. Also over at Shorty’s last Saturday, Uel Jackson played his regular “First Saturday” gig, which always brings in the old Tarpon Ice House crowd. Uel has also been playing some shows at the Gaff and the Back Porch lately, too.
