It’s flooding down in Texas… It’s been a tough holiday weekend. We dodged a bullet, but our brothers and sisters in Wimberley, San Marcos, Austin, Houston, San Antonio and many points in Texas… not so much. I’ve been looking at photos and videos of the flooding all day and

The great Max Stalling played the Back Porch on Sunday

Patrice Pike will play Giggity’s on June 6th.

DO NOT MISS LIST

Coming next weekend…

Coming this weekend…

On Thursday, June 4th old school cowgirl, Tessie Lou will bring her Shotgun Gang back to the Back Porch. Her voice will blow you away. Also on the 4th, Selfie will continue their string of Thursdays at Shorty’s and Duke E. Brown will play Rockit’s. On Friday the 5th, Americana studs Cody Johnson and Sam Riggs will play Brewster Street, our old pal Davin James (Spring, TX) will return to the Back Porch, and former Triggerfish leader, Mark Wilks, will play the Gaff. On Saturday the 6th, we have three big shows to choose from: the phenomenal rock and roller, Patrice Pike (Austin, TX) will play Giggity’s, Walt Wilkins (Austin, TX) will play the Black Marlin and Houston Marchman will play the Back Porch. For my money, you dare not miss Patrice Pike. She will blow you away. You might remember her old rock band, Sister 7. This lady is the essence of a true rock and roll musician. She is beyond great. I’ve seen her perform many times and have always, always been impressed. Also, Walt Wilkins is great. There are few singer-songwriters that compare. His band of Mytiqueros is somewhat of a Texas Hill Country super group with a 70’s Texas country rock that Austin was built on. Wilkins songwriting has been compared to the caliber of John Steinbeck.

Matt Hole was on fire at his Giggity’s show on Saturday The statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan on Town Lake in Austin after the flood. it’s beyond devastating. In fact, it’s of epic proportion. Families literally swept away. Houses, highways and bridges destroyed. Lives lost, death tolls rising and people still missing. The Blanco River was triple its flood stage level of 13 feet at 40 feet. In Wimberley a wall of water carried 300 homes away. Much of Houston is under water, Dallas and Arlington got hit hard and downtown Austin had four feet of flood water. I was in the 1981 Memorial Day flood in Austin and it was huge. I spent the night at Hut’s Hamburgers right on Shoal Creek and watched car after car float down the creek… but this one was even bigger and more widespread. If you can help these poor souls in any way, do it. At very least, please send money to the Red Cross. Father James Derkits at Trinity by the Sea Episcopal will be organizing trips to San Marcos and Wimberley with volunteers to help with the clean up and I will keep you posted. My pal Billy Snipes went to Wimberley today and will get me a heads up from ground zero as to what we can do. If any of you have your own disaster aid efforts going on, please let me know and I’ll help spread the word.

We had a party, party weekend…

Rod Gang (Corpus Christi, TX), Beau Walker (Kingsville, TX), Max Stalling (Dallas, TX) and Selfie (Port Aransas, TX). I was especially impressed with Ulrich Ellison and also with

Mike Blakely y los Yahoos will play the Back Porch this Saturday.

Gary P. Nunn played to a packed house at the Back Porch this weekend Beau Walker (both shows at Shorty’s). Though entirely different music styles, they are both born entertainers and passionate musicians. Ulrich will be back at the end of June. Over at Giggity’s rockabilly rocker Matt Hole was on fire. He flat ripped it up. I’ve never seen that place more packed. And the “big boy” line-up at the Back Porch with Gary P, Larry Joe and Max Stalling was a slam dunk. It doesn’t get much stronger around here. With everything going on, I never made it out to the Black Marlin to see Charlie Robison but Rankin did and he said the place was sold out and the band was great. He knows about such things so I’ll take him on his word.

Beau Walker played Shorty’s last weekend Despite threats of more bad weather, none of the shows in Port A were disturbed by any storms. The tourists came and the bars were full. And the shows were all A list material. I saw 90 Proof, Ulrich Ellison and Tribe (Austin, TX), Gary P. Nunn (Austin, TX), Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX), Matt Hole and the Hot

We are officially “in season”. Let the festivities begin. I visualize a sea of golf carts in our near future. Coming this weekend one of the best cover bands San Antonio has to offer, Passing Strangers, will play the Back Porch on Friday. Led by John Boyd, this band is a S.A. institution. They played at the club I ran there, The Lab, many, many times and always sold the place out. Also on Friday, the Ty Dietz Band will play Giggity’s and JR Castillo will play Brewster Street. On Saturday, the jumpin’ blues boys from Austin, Mike Milligan and Texiana Bluz, will play Giggity’s. These guys are serious about their blues and will get the house rockin’. Also on Saturday, the award winning novelist and singer-songwriter, Mike Blakely y los Yahoos (Llano, TX) will play the Back Porch and Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX) will bring their island reggae sounds to Shorty’s. And, a band I’ve been told to try and catch, Splendeferous will play the new Rockit’s Whiskey Bar in Corpus. On Sunday, the show to see is Girls in a Coma (San Antonio, TX) at the House of Rock. That will be a rowdy show.

On the horizon… On the near horizon, watch for shows from Naked Maja, Clay McClinton, Mark McKinney, Thom Shepherd, Coley McCabe, Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef, The Toadies, Everclear, American Hi-Fi, Austin Heat, The Independent Thieves, The Thieving Birds and Gary P. Nunn. That out to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there.
