Go Spurs Go… As I write this, my beloved Spurs are at war with the Miami Heat battling for another NBA championship and the combat has been intense. The Spurs? Ok, I guess. If y’all want to watch some stupid baseball game instead of hearing music, I’ll play along but you’re gonna have to throw in a burger!” I was so relieved that she wasn’t offended that I spewed out a “Oh my God. Thank you! I thank you, the Spurs thank you and all of Port A thanks you… and by the way, this was all the owner, Edwin’s, decision. He made me do this. It was him not me.” Go Spurs Go!!!

Black Betty played Tiffany Tuesday’s at Giggity’s last week on at 8 PM. The conversation I had with Tiffany went something like this… “Tiff, hi. Listen… I know you go on at 8 tonight and have a special guest coming and everything for your wonderful and completely delightful show that I absolutely adore and that you have put a lot of planning into, and I know it’s going to be great, but you know, the Spurs are also playing at the same time tonight and I don’t want to deter any attention from your performance… so do you think we could wait until the Spurs game is over to start your show tonight?” Dead silence. Finally Tiffany says “Who? The Spurs? There’s

The Black Marlin Bar and Grill, located at the La Palmilla Golf Course in Port A, kicked off their summer concert series last Saturday with an impressive show by Ray Wylie Hubbard (Wimberley, TX). This show was the first of ten weekly shows to be held each Saturday through August 9th with a number of high profile Texas acts such as Hal Ketchum, Junior Brown, Brian Keane and the Rankin Twins. The show last Saturday was textbook Ray Wylie. He played all his hits and told all his jokes and seemed generally pleased with the environment and the audience, who were more than receptive. The Black Marlin management had decided to make this a “free show” in the eleventh hour and Hubbard alluded to this several times in the evening, offering, “You get what you paid for.” It was a beautiful evening for this outdoor event and this new venue did an excellent job in their first endeavor of putting on a fairly big show at a golf course bar. It was definitely a comfortable and classy setting. Back Porch you better look out! Junior Brown (Austin, TX) is slated to play this coming Saturday. Brown is known for his high speed guitar virtuosity on an instrument he invented called a “guit-steel”, which is a hybrid double necked six string guitar and steel guitar combo which he has named “Big Red”. He has released nine studio albums in his career, has charted twice on the Billboard country singles

And on Saturday Saturday the 14th, the Whiskey Sisters (Austin, TX) will bring their rocking sockin’ show to the Porch, Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX) will play Giggity’s, our favorite string band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Shorty’s and HOBO plus the Rocky Bottow String Band will play the Handsome Sailor Beach Club over in Aransas Pass on Conn Brown Harbor. Man, that’s a bunch of hard decisions to make right there.
It was another great week of live music here on our little island. I caught shows by Jim Dugan at Giggity’s, Waterloo Revival (Austin, TX), Davin James (Spring, TX) and the Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) at the Back Porch, Uel Jackson (Port Aransas, TX) and Mandy Rowden & Billy Abel (Austin, TX) at Shorty’s, and a CD release party from J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) at Giggity’s. All of these shows were on fire. Coldfire played to a SRO crowd to promote his new release.
