Three Chords and the Truth
Port A’s newest resident. Meet newly adopted Baby By Ronnie Narmour
And Baby makes three… It’s beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas around here. I don’t know what got into me, but I actually went and adopted another little fur baby. This one is only eight months old. Her name is Baby and she’s a SchnauzerChihuahua mix and is adorable. Baby was another “death row” inmate that the good people at the Animal Friends of Port Aransas helped me find. All I can say is thank the Lord for people like Connie Beane and Heather Pennington for watching out for these poor discarded and lost dogs and literally saving their lives. Heather lives in Kingsville and rescued Baby from death row at the shelter there and was fostering her until she was ready for adoption. The statewide network these ladies communicate in is effective and amazing. There are people like Connie and Heather in most every city in Texas and they all help each other to get the word out about animals that are about to be killed and need fostering or adopting. I know it’s not unusual to find a dozen or more dogs being fostered at Connie’s house on any given day. And, these angels (again) paid for all the vet costs (neutering, vaccine and microchip) and do this solely out of the goodness of their hearts. There is no hidden agenda here, only pure altruism. Anyway, it feels really good to help in my small way. There are plenty more fur babies out there that need homes, and that’s an understatement. Every shelter in every town is overflowing with dogs and cats that will eventually be put down if they are not rescued. If adopting an animal isn’t an option, perhaps fostering or helping to network is. In this area, contact Connie Beane on Facebook or through the Port Aransas Animal Shelter.

Island Moon
band (featuring Jimmy, Randy Garibay, Jack Barber, Sauce Gonzales, Urban Urbano, R.B. Blackstone and Butch Morgan) with a four piece horn section (who just happened to be the Westside Horns: Rocky Morales, Al Gomez, Spot Barnett and Bobby Reyes). It was labeled as a “pro-jam” and you had to be a working musician to be invited to the stage. People like Augie Meyers and the Sisters Morales would show up and jam regularly. Back then Jimmy’s regular band was called Heavy Traffic and featured Jerry Clayton on drums. Jerry was also known as Fred Zepplin who worked for KZEP radio and did the five o’clock traffic report from a helicopter every day. In the early 90’s I was the chapter president of the Texas Music Association in S.A. and Jimmy’s wife Pam Spacek was my vice-president. Suffice it to say, I’ve got a lot of history with Mr. Spacek. His show at Giggity’s brought back a flood of great memories and it was nothing short of OUTSTANDING to have this gentleman in the house. His show was a text book example of an epic blues performance. If I have my way, we’ll be seeing him around here a lot more often.
Mandy Rowden…
Selfie played Shorty’s last Friday Ruben Limas/Selfies… Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays put on a nice performance at Giggity’s on Saturday plus the hot new reggae-blues-jazz-swing-none of the above island band, Selfie, also wooed the crowd at Shorty’s and The Flats last weekend. Seems they have recently become in high demand. The band consists of madman Ray Summy on guitar, renaissance man Chris Jordan on bass and various local drummers such as Dillon Stowe and Cody Strong. The crowds have been growing and the locals may have found themselves another Triggerfish.
DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend…
The Jimmy Spacek Trio played Giggity’s last Saturday
Chris Duarte will play the Executive Surf Club on Dec. 15th. play the Executive Surf Club. Originally from San Antonio, Duarte is a long time Austin guitar wizard who has played with the likes of Junior Medlow. And on Tuesday, Giggity’s is switching some things up… Tiffany Tuesday will be taking a hiatus until March and the Paul Taylor Band will take residency every Tuesday from 6:30- 9:00. The Winter Texas will love this show. Taylor is an old school boogie woogie piano player who can belt out Ray Charles and Willie Nelson with the best of them.
Mandy Rowden played Shorty’s last Saturday Also last weekend, my main “guitar gal with an attitude” Mandy Rowden (Austin, TX) graced us with a show at Shorty’s. Mandy has been coming to Port A for several years now and first started playing here at the storied Tarpon Ice House. She plays in a few bands in Austin and has inched her way into the preferred echelon of Austin dignitary, opening for the likes of Joe Ely and Shelley King. I really love Mandy as much for her music as for the fact that she’s a bonified fire cracker. Mandy has a tow sack full of original tunes in the folk-goes-pop arena but can also bring out a huge arsenal of cover material. She plays in an all female cover band called Cover Girl that also plays a very popular live band karaoke show. Look for Mandy back at Shorty’s in January and February. And, I heard something about Cover Girl coming down here at some point.

Southside Jimmy Spacek… I was pleased to see my old friend of 25 years, Southside Jimmy Spacek (San Antonio, TX) in town and performing at Giggity’s last Friday night. Jimmy is a household name in San Antonio and one of the finest blues players anywhere. He hosted my open jams at a couple of different venues (Billy Blues and The Laboratory) for many years and was a key factor in the success of those endeavors. The jam at the Lab had an eleven piece core
