end up. I plan to bring Shelley back in a few months and play at Giggity’s with a full band. That will be a real treat.

Happy New Year…

Welcome to the other side. 2013 is now behind us and I just hung up my brand new Sports Illustrated 2014 calendar (swimsuit edition, of course) that Susan Powell gave me for Christmas and I must say… IT ROCKS!!! I hope everyone survived New Year’s Eve without getting killed or caught. The big party was at Giggity’s with Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys from Austin. I’m actually writing this before the fact but have complete faith that the party at Giggs will be nothing short of world class. The scene is set. I’ll have some photos for you in the next column.

Happy Birthday…

January is the month of birthdays… Rockin’ Dale Rankin and Deb Doyle’s is on the 8th., drummer Dillon Stowe’s is on the 11th, Tamay’s is on the 23rd, Father James’ is on the 24th, Captain Chester’s is on the 28th, Back Porch bartender Cherise Torbett’s is on the 29th and mine is on the 18th. I’m sure there’s more, but these are my Islander Facebook friends and their birthdays are accessible. Thumbs up to Capricorns!

RIP Deeohgee…

Old friend, Van Blize paid the island a short visit to spread the ashes of an island legend, Deeohgee

My old island pal, Van Blize, came back to Port A for a short visit. His reason was bittersweet. Van was in town to spread his dog, Deeohgee’s, ashes around the island they both loved so dearly. Van and his little Schnauzer were island mainstays for many years. Deeohgee sired many off spring in his day and his legacy lives on. Van now lives in Arlington with his daughter Billie Blize and promises to come visit us more ofter. RIP Deeohgee! You were a great little island dog.

Robert Earl, Terri & Lloyd…

Van joined me for the Robert Earl Keen Christmas show at Brewster Street the day after Christmas. Actually, we had gone to see Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines more than REK. This is fourth year that I’ve gone to this show and it was by far the busiest one yet. You could barely move in there. Last year, a pretty stupid, drunken fight broke out at the end of the show and pretty much killed any good holiday vibe that might have been going on. This year the house security crew had a very definite aggressive presence. The show itself was fairly predictable. The musicians were dressed in full Christmas regalia… Robert Earl dressed as one of the wise men, Rich Brotherton, his guitarist as Tiny Tim and his bassist, Bill Whitbeck, as Charles Dickens. Terri and Lloyd had a “Santa’s Helpers” motif going on. The stage was decorated complete with a Christmas tree,

Jul and the Chrome Wheels will be playing Shortys and Giggity’s this weekend. Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines played Brewster Street last Thursday night with Robert Earl Keen a big turkey and a bunch of oversized presents with icons from the famous “Merry Christmas From the Family” song (a big box of Salem Lights, etc.). They did the same thing last year. To be honest, I listened to all of Terri and Lloyds set and about a half dozen REK songs then decided to split. It was too crowded for me. Plus, I wasn’t too excited about sticking around to see how crazy the drunken crowd was going to get this year. This entourage played the same shows in seven days in seven different cities this season and played some major venues around the state.

Shelley King… On Saturday, the show to see was definitely the Shelley King performance at Shorty’s. Shelley was fresh off the heels of a national tour with a group of girls that call themselves Good The amazing Shelley Girls with Bad King played Shorty’s Intentions (Lisa last Saturday night Morales and Robyn Ludwick). The next night after the Shorty’s show, Shelley recorded a live CD at Antone’s with Carolyn Wonderland, Guy Forsyth and Pat Brink. A few months ago, Shelley recorded a new CD with the members of the famous New Orleans roots band, the Subdudes… this is one happening gal who never stops. We are so blessed that she has embraced our little island and loves playing at Shorty’s. Her songs and her voice are as good as it gets. The house really responded to Shelley at this show and she had a blast. During the break, I took her down to Giggity’s to hear The Melissa Brooke Band and she was really impressed. I introduced her to Anthony Strapp, Melissa’s manager. Shelley King is a lady who can really make things happen and there’s no telling where that introduction might

Mike Williams and Paul Taylor will play every Monday at Giggity’s The Mike Williams Jazz Band featuring Rocky Arnold played the Tarpon Ice House last Friday. This band of seasoned veterans included Williams on trombone and guitar, Arnold on piano, Rick Lehman on drums, Eddie Olivarez on tenor sax, Jack Throwbride on clarinet and Cheo Reyes on trumpet. They played a delightful selection of torch songs and jazz standards on such gems as Unforgettable and the Sinatra classic, This Love of Mine. The 91 year old Arnold is a career musician who has played with such luminaries as Paul Desmond, Bud Freeman, Jack Teagarden and J.C. Higginbotham, and recorded with Slim Whitman. When I listened to this band, I envisioned a scene from Casablanca… two lovers at a dark corner table, a tuxedo clad waiter pouring champagne and a spotlight on the grand piano with rattan fan blades slowly turning…an elegant crooner singing love song after beautiful love song. This was truly beautiful music from a classic musical era.

Ruben Limas will start playing every Thursday at Giggity’s.
