Putnam Gardens DREAM Update June 2014 Summer DREAM started off with a day of popsicles and trivia. The youth and interns are excited for a fun-filled summer of activities! DREAM Programming: Summer DREAM began on June 16th with kick-off events in each of DREAM’s community. The first official week of Summer DREAM began on June 30th. Summer DREAM will consist of one community day and one trip day each week. Activities will include a blend of community activities, field trips, and activities catered to the youth within the community. o June 23: The interns hosted a kick-off event with trivia and popsicles. They were able to meet several school year DREAM participants, parents of DREAM youth, and youth interested in joining DREAM. They had all youth fill out sheets about what activities they are interested in doing this summer. o June 27: Tuesday’s activity was tie-dye. Attendees got to tie-dye shirts using red, white, and blue colors to celebrate the Fourth of July. While the shirts were drying, the interns and youth played soccer in the Putnam courtyard. Upcoming Trips: The Roseway: DREAM has been selected to send 25 youth in grades six through eight aboard the Roseway schooner. The program will run from July 14th through July 18th. Each day will focus on different teambuilding and life skills including communication, teamwork, and self-worth. Applications will be handed out to eligible youth in the beginning of July. Boston College Trip: Boston DREAM will be hosting a college trip for DREAM youth in grades six through twelfth the week of July 21st through July 24th. At present we are confirmed to tour Roxbury Community College, Boston University, Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, University of Massachusetts Boston, and Suffolk University. Ten to fifteen youth will attend each tour. New England Aquarium: We have several aquarium trips scheduled for this summer. There is a community outreach event on July 9th, and two field trips scheduled for July 10th and 25th. Throughout the summer youth from each community will get the opportunity to participate in at least one of these events.
