DREAM Program
2011 Annual Report
Dedicated to the memory of
Lowell L. Richards, III A dreamer. March 15, 1947 - February 5, 2012
For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

Lowell was a devoted fan of DREAM, and a strong supporter of our Local Programs at Dartmouth College, his alma mater. He was also instrumental to our growth in his home city of Boston.

This spring, Maryah Merlo, one of the earliest mentees in DREAM, became the very first of our program youth to graduate from college. By crossing the stage to accept her bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering Technology on May 5, she represented the first wave of young DREAMers who have defied the odds, seized the opportunities available to them and defined their own future successes. Maryah’s trail blazing in this area was quickly followed by Devon Lapan and Katlyn Bullis. Devon and Katlyn were both original Elm Street mentees, and graduated from Johnson State College and the University of Vermont, respectively. Over the next few years we expect to see more and more DREAM youth graduate from high school and move on to college or successful careers. Why do I say defy the odds? It is no surprise that growing up in poverty has a negative impact on the future aspirations of youth. In 2009, the Vermont Children’s Poverty Council stated “we know that children who come from poor households do not get the same opportunities to succeed as other children have” and therefore “these children are disproportionately found in the statistics of social failure: drop-outs, teen pregnancies, juvenile delinquency, and incarceration.” Disparities are also evident in education. Standardized test scores show that low income children lag behind their peers in the earliest years of schooling, and that the gap in scores only grows as the children move through their K–12 years. Children who fall behind in second grade or third grade are more likely to be high school drop-outs. Without support, intervention, knowledge, and constant encouragement, low-income children are simply less likely to take advantage or even be aware of the opportunities available to them. For so many children and youth in DREAM, mentors help tip the scales in their favor. DREAM mentors work tirelessly, in collaboration with families and communities, to raise the aspirations of the kids and the expectations of success for everyone. And so, I would like to say thank you! All of you who volunteer for DREAM, all of you who support DREAM, and all of you who believe in our mission. Together we are helping children recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams.

Camp DREAM
By the numbers Summer 2011 was a blast! We hosted 104 children at Camp, during 8 sessions of either three or five days. Helping us keep Camp beautiful for the season were 191 volunteers from IBM, who came up during United Way Days of Caring. Winter was also a major success, incorporating both our traditional Winter Adventure Camp (WAC) and some of our new Teen programming. Over 70 children participated in various winter activities spaced out over 4 weekends. Teens from all over the state attended 3 different DREAM training sessions focused on future planning and service. Attending just 1 of these trainings made DREAM teens eligible to apply for a position as a Counselor in Training (CIT) at Camp DREAM. In December, teens talked about what they want to get out of DREAM and how to take more ownership over the program, in addition to volunteering as elves at the Polar Express fundraiser. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we focused our learning on job applications, resumes and interviews, as well as planning for a session at the spring DREAM Teen Retreat.
One of the mentors at Camp for the first time was Taylor, a new recruit from our Elm St. program. Taylor and her mentee had spent Friday DREAM sessions together, but had not yet had the chance to spend more than a few uninterrupted hours with one another. At WAC, their relationship took off. “It was amazing,” said Taylor, “we had spent a lot of the morning together playing in the snow, and were walking down the Camp road when Jessica turned to me and said ‘You know
Taylor, I really just love you right now.’”

November 21, 2011 marked
the 10 Year Anniversary of DREAM’s incorporation as a non-profit organization. We celebrated the event in true DREAM style, hosting a gathering of friends and supporters at the West Monitor Barn in Richmond, Vt. The event raised over $1,200 for DREAM programming. We would like to express our thanks to every single person who has helped us get to this point. Here’s to 10 more years of DREAM. With your help, there is no limit to what we can accomplish!
