Elm Street DREAM Quarterly Report June-August 2013 Greetings from DREAM! Summer brought warm weather and plenty of DREAMing this quarter. Youth participated in cooking activities, tended a garden plot, attended a baseball game, and represented Elm Street in three summer sessions at Camp DREAM. Though sad summer has ended, they are excited that mentors have returned this fall. Here is a summary of Elm Street DREAM happenings from the summer:
Highlights from the Quarter Include: Summer DREAM officially began with a parade through the Elm Street community led by this year’s Summer Community Interns Hannah Faesy, Gabby Fisher, Andrea Fishman, and Melanie Schwed. Francine Bahati attended DREAM’s amazing eight-day college road trip to Philadelphia. More information about the trip is listed under “Special Events for Youth and Mentors.” Six Elm Street teens attended Camp DREAM’s Teen Session. Six boys attended Camp DREAM’s Northern Vermont Boys Session. Four Elm Street mentees joined girls from all over northern Vermont for a week of swimming, canoeing, and games. The Summer Community Interns organized three culminating events: a trip to Pizza Putt for the younger mentees, a trip to the Addison County Fair for the teens, and a barbecue in the community for all mentees and their families. University of Vermont students returned to campus on August 26th. DREAM is excited to have all three community interns returning as mentors this fall.
Weekly Activities with Youth: Elm Street mentees enjoyed taking care of their garden plot at the O’Brien Community Center garden. Among other vegetables, they have harvested basil, lettuce, and mint. A group of teens made dinner with ingredients from the garden. Elm Street youth went to the Echo Lake Aquarium for the Dinosaur Exhibit. Youth enjoyed making recycled crafts at the Fletcher Free Library. Elm Street mentees enjoyed meeting DREAM youth from the Birchwood program for a morning of cookie decorating at Barrio Bakery. Elm Street mentees competed in a basketball tournament. A group of youth went berry picking. They made smoothies with the berries they picked. Four youth enjoyed a day of sailing at the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. A group of teens went to the Lake Monsters Game. They were excited to see the Lake Monsters pull off a win in the bottom of the 9th inning. Hannah brought three teens to the Summervale Festival in the Intervale.
