Riverside DREAM Quarterly Report October – December 2013 Greetings from DREAM! The Riverside DREAM program has finished up another wonderful semester of activities. Though youth are sad to see their mentors leaving for winter break, they look forward to their return in January. Here is a summary of all the Riverside DREAM happenings from the last quarter.

Highlights from the Quarter: • • • •

Several new and returning mentors attended DREAMstock in Bolton. They built relationships with mentors from other programs, had lots of fun, and participated in discussions about youth and DREAM programming. Riverside mentors volunteered at the Ben and Jerry’s factory during Columbus Day, directing traffic and picking up trash. Collectively, they raised over $600! Riverside mentors hosted a very successful fundraiser with Boloco, raising $250. Thanks to Boloco for generously supporting DREAM! UVM students welcomed two new Riverside co-chairs, B Welker Carson and Emily West Geary!

Fridays: • • • • • • •

Returning mentors brought new mentors into the community, where they spent time with Riverside youth and families. Mentees participated in a photo scavenger hunt on Church Street. They asked community members to take photos with them, and got the opportunity to explain DREAM to people in Burlington. With 23 new mentors, Riverside DREAM decided to spend a Friday doing small group activities. Mentors and mentees played games, ate ice cream, and got to know one another. Riverside youth met UVM’s lacrosse team, got a tour of their facility, and played a game of soccer. Riverside mentors spent one-on-one hang out time with their mentees. Riverside mentors and mentees broke off for small group activities. Mentors brought pizza, salad, and pastries to the Riverside community for DREAMsgiving, an annual celebration with mentees and families. Thank you to Five Guys and Mirabelles Café for the generous donations!

Special Events for Children and Mentors: • •

A group of Elm Street mentors and teens hiked a portion of the Long Trail as part of UVM’s Catamountain Classic. This event raises funds for a scholarship for a DREAM teen to attend an Outward Bound Program each year. Thirteen older teens from across Vermont gathered for the second annual Teen Futures Retreat, where they wrote intros for their college essays, had a frank discussion about the pressure of drug use, and discussed their goals for life after high school. Thanks to all of the residents of The Swamp for hosting DREAM, and to Tristram Coffin, U.S. District Attorney, for facilitating conversation around The Opiate Effect. Lastly, DREAM thanks Paul Espina and Katie Purcell for all of their help!
