Johnson DREAM Quarterly Report December – February 2013 - 2014 Greetings from DREAM! The Johnson DREAM program has finished up another wonderful semester of activities. Though youth are sad to see their mentors leaving for winter break, they look forward to their return in January. Here is a summary of all the Johnson DREAM happenings from the last quarter.

Highlights from the quarter include:  

A partnership with the Johnson Elementary After School program was established this quarter in an effort to broaden youth recruitment efforts. So far three new youth have signed up and will begin with DREAM early in March! In appreciation of National Mentoring Month, 22 mentors volunteering with northern programs in Vermont were invited to Boloco for a night of celebration and thanks for their hard work. Thanks to our partnership with Boloco, DREAM was able to provide free burritos. Mentors bonded with staff, ate cake, and competed in a DREAM t-shirt raffle. This quarter DREAMers were especially active, running around outside, in the gym, or around campus playing games for every single DREAM Friday!

Friday Activities:    

One snowy Friday was spent outside, sledding, playing hide and seek, and generally enjoying wintry fun! This quarter DREAMers were all feeling a bit of Spring Fever and therefore spent several Fridays playing tag, basketball, soccer, and other active games in the gym! One Friday DREAMers came together to play Jenga, Twister, and a bunch of silly camp games. During the Friday before the college students left for winter break the mentors were surpised to find that no mentees were able to attend DREAM. Instead of cancelling, the mentors took this opportunity to get together anyway to bond as a group. They held their own Holiday party, complete with hot chocolate, snacks, holiday themed coloring sheets, and a screening of the movie Elf!

Capacity Building and Fundraising:   

This quarter DREAMers connected with the Johnson Elementary After School program to bolster recruitment efforts of mentees. Three new youth signed on and will start coming to DREAM activities at the beginning of the next quarter! This year DREAM raised $102,368 during its Annual Appeal. Gifts came in all sorts of sizes from DREAMers around the world. With the $20,731 raised during the Alumni Appeal, DREAM raised over $123,000 this quarter. DREAM was recently awarded $15,000 from the Hoehl Foundation and $5,000 from the Redducs Foundation for work at Camp DREAM. These grants were awarded for the construction of a new bathhouse in Fletcher, VT, where Camp DREAM is located, and for working with New American families to send their children on overnight camping trips. A hearty thanks to both foundations for supporting Camp DREAM! We look forward to serving more youth than ever before.
