It’s That Time of Year

Suzy Beth Sarver

IT Operations

It’s that time of year, friends: Spring Training is here, longer days of sunshine are evident, and the birds are coming home. Everything is alive!

Keith Bullington

Who doesn’t get excited for the extra hours outside after work or school? There’s now time to take a walk in the neighborhood after dinner, maybe start a new project, or get involved with youth baseball. Since we love our sports here at 919 Magazine – especially sports programs for our local kids – we hope to get you fired up for baseball season. Up to bat first is Laura Brannon. A familiar face around the Brier Creek Community Center, Brannon is the Center Director and she offers up details on the programs available for youth baseball and softball leagues, where to get registered, the various age groups and more. It all begins on Page 24. Also in this issue: • Brier Creek is bursting with personality! So in this issue we are featuring not one, but two Personality Profiles. First, meet Brier Creek Country Club’s Barracudas Swim Coach Pat Gardiner. Affectionately known as “Coach Pat”, she grew up swimming and then moved to coaching others in swimming and water safety. Her coaching took her around the world through a 31-year career. Now she brings that vast experience to Brier Creek. Check out the story on Page 14. • Our next “personality” introduces the accomplished Joel Pawlak. Associate Dean at NC State University and a Brier Creek resident, he’s making a difference at the school, in research and at home. Find the profile on Page 18. • 919 Magazine introduces a talented group of volunteers and our publishing friends, the editors and contributors of the Brier Crier quarterly HOA newsletter. Learn about their efforts to chronicle the best of social happenings on Page 16. • And, finally, don’t put down this issue of Brier Creek’s all-local magazine without a visit to the 919 Planner beginning on Page 9. We offer up community events, camps and registrations, night life, live music and other fun things to Go, See and Do in the 919. As I mentioned in our last issue, 919 Magazine now offers video engagement technology. Be sure to look for specially-placed 919 mobile icons throughout this publication, scan with your mobile device and learn more about our advertisers’ products and services. Get details on where to download your free app on Page 4. Big things are in store for 919 Magazine this spring and summer, so be sure to stay connected with us on our Twitter and Facebook feeds, or drop us a line at info@919magazine.com Our number one goal is to deliver a magazine readers want to read, and we sincerely hope we exceed your expectations and continue to grow with you…our community friends.

Adventure-Filled Road Leads Swim Coach to Brier Creek Country Club By G. CLEVELAND KILGORE 919 Magazine Writer

The road that brought Pat Gardiner to coach the Brier Creek Country Club Barracudas Swim Team is long and filled with adventure. “I grew up swimming and training year round from age five through my college years, and I began coaching at age 19,” said Gardiner, who begins her second season with the Barracudas this spring and summer. “I have coached summer leagues – such as Brier Creek – year round USA Swimming Club teams, and USA Swimming Elite level swim camps for rising Olympians; have been invited to coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado and year round YMCA National level age group teams; and put on swim clinics in Zambia and Kenya.” Gardiner and husband of 35 years, Paul (who assists her with the Barracudas as a volunteer coach), relocated from New Jersey to North Raleigh to be near their grandchildren. “We have lived here three years, and I love the genuine friendliness and ease of conversation with the folks here,” she said. In addition to her extensive experience, training and certification

in swimming, Gardiner worked as a registered nurse both in oncology and in schools. In 1988, she and her family moved to Kijabe, Kenya, for mission work – which included a wide range of activities and responsibilities. “I was a nurse, local veterinarian for the many dogs owned by the other missionaries living in the area, and a dental assistant for the 500 kids at the school who needed to have care by the “one” local dentist. I learned how to help with all dental care, even doing some root canals,” Gardiner said. “In Kenya, I learned quickly that

‘You do what you can, in the bush!’” The Gardiners have three children: Daughter Monica Reeves, who swam four years at East Carolina University, is an optometrist in Raleigh; daughter Lindsey Takkunen, who also swam four years at ECU, is Director of Aquatics for all British schools in Kenya and Tanzania; and son Joshua Gardiner, who swam at George Mason University before entering the military. They also have five grandchildren – and unofficially fostered 13 children in their home over the first 19 years of

their marriage (some a few months, some a few years). Pat Gardiner still enjoys swimming today, for its great cardio workout benefits and for its “ease on the knees” – and certainly continues to enjoy coaching, especially with her spouse. “It’s been 30-plus years work experience of coming together to use each other’s gifts and using them to really give the kids we’ve coached a more complete package than if we had coached alone,” she explained. “Together we cheer, coach, instruct, encourage, give input and choices…and, yes, sometimes disagree.”

Volunteers Provide Local Flavor To Brier Creek HOA Newsletter By G. CLEVELAND KILGORE 919 Magazine Writer

For about 10 years, the Brier Crier – Brier Creek Country Club Homeowners’ quarterly newsletter – has chronicled many social aspects of the planned residential development and its residents. Funded by the BCCC Homeowners Association and staffed by volunteers who live in the community, the newsletter is currently managed by Co-Editors Carol McCormick and Kate Sandorf. Joel Pawlak Making an Impact in Education, Research – and with his Family in Brier Creek By G. CLEVELAND KILGORE 919 Magazine Writer

Brier Creek resident Joel Pawlak works in a unique environment. Currently Associate Dean for Research in the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University, Pawlak has been a professor at the school since 2001 and finds it quite fulfilling. “When working in a university, you get to have an entrepreneurial spirit in growing a research portfolio, while at the same time getting to interact with bright young minds,” he said. “To hook you on education as a career, all you need is that first student who writes a thank you note after they graduate. Sometimes, you do not realize the impact you make, but this is one of the most rewarding things I think can happen to a person.” Pawlak’s home department at NC State, the Department of Forest Biomaterials, focuses on educating students in Paper Science and Engineering as well as Sustainable Materials and Technology. The department is housed in the College of Natural Resources, focuses on providing sustainable solutions to the problems of the modern world – including addressing challenges related to materials and energy, the interaction between the built and natural environment, and the interface of land and water. In addition, he works with a company called Tethis, which is located in Brier Creek and is commercializing a technology Pawlak co-invented at NC State. This technology removes dissolve materials from water including salts, heavy metals, and other pollutants. Raleigh’s Youth Baseball, Softball Leagues Focus On Good Sportsmanship, Improving Basic Skills Across North Raleigh – including the Brier Creek area – hundreds of boys and girls get outside with balls and gloves and participate in the youth baseball and softball leagues offered by the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. In fact, in 2013, more than 600 eager North Raleigh youngsters used the sports to fend off spring fever, get some exercise and participate in America’s Past Time. It takes a lot of planning, a lot of organization, a lot of time and effort…plus a lot of volunteers. Brier Creek Community Center plays a significant role in the program, hosting the age 5-6 T-Ball League. And in this issue, 919 Magazine talks to the center’s Director, Laura Brannon, about the details and benefits of the leagues.

A Conversation About Youth Baseball and Softball Leagues with Brier Creek Community Center Director Laura Brannon:

Photos by Marlana Semenza

What youth baseball and softball leagues are available in Raleigh at Brier Creek Community Center? * There are citywide leagues for youth ages 5-18. At Brier Creek Community Center, we host games and practices for age 5-6 T-Ball. There are 4 districts total and each district has the opportunity to house 10 leagues (by age). The program’s leagues involve various centers – including the Brier Creek center, which is one of four sites in District 1, along with Lake Lynn Community Center, Optimist Park Community Center, and Millbrook Exchange Park Community Center. Each of these centers is a registrations hub for all of the different age group leagues.

What is your involvement with the leagues at the Brier Creek center? I am Director of the Brier Creek Community Center; however, Assistant Director Robert Stewart is the lead for the Youth Baseball League at the center. Youth Athletics is a major part of his job: He coordinates the league, directly implements the program, and is the primary contact person who manages the program from beginning to the end. Additionally, he manages the recruitment of coaches. 919 Magazine BC

How large is the league based at the Brier Creek center?

Are playoffs or tournaments involved with the leagues playing at Brier Creek center?

Last season, we had 10 teams and 120 players participate in the league.

No, not in the T-ball league held at the Brier Creek Community Center.

What are the specifics of the league at Brier Creek center?

What are the registration fees for the leagues?

Players have a two-to-three day commitment per week from mid-March to May, which includes practices and games. Last year’s league games were played on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays; at this point, we have not finalized the days for this year’s league.

What is the general philosophy of the recreational baseball and softball leagues? The Youth Athletics Program provides to all youth age 5-18 the opportunity to participate in quality, organized athletics through leagues, special events, camps, and clinics. We strive to teach fundamental skills, rules, teamwork and sportsmanship in a fun atmosphere with the leadership of well-trained volunteers and staff. Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department is focused on creating a fun atmosphere and promoting sportsmanship. 26

919 Magazine BC

Registration costs for the leagues are $36 for residents, and $48 for non-residents. Practices start in mid-March, and games begin in early April.

Are there other fees to participate, other than the basic registration? No, the city’s general fund budget offsets the cost of the youth athletics program. In addition, individuals can apply for financial assistance for registration.

What equipment must youths provide to participate in the leagues? For T-Ball, the youth are not expected to provide anything. Regarding the other leagues, equipment provided by Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department includes balls, bats, and helmets. The jerseys and hats are included in the registration fees.

What challenges do you face in coordinating the leagues? Space is an issue, as well as trying to accommodate the number of registrants. In fact, we play at a secondary site for overflow. Recruiting volunteers is another challenge, and, of course, inclement weather makes a huge impact – especially when it comes to scheduling make up games.

How can a parent or other adult in the community become involved in the leagues?

Youth sports sponsored by the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department provide the opportunity for boys and girls to learn good sportsmanship and progressively develop skills.

We are always looking for coaches and umpires. We offer umpire clinics during the month of February that anyone interested can attend and become an official with the city. To coach, we have interested candidates fill out our coaching application and background check. Once we review that information, we find the right fit for the league and the coach.

A Rabbit’s Tale – An Easter Story is the first book of a planned three-part saga by Ruiz. “My goal was to create a story that would engage a broad range of readers, both Catholic and non-Catholics,” the author said. “I wanted to write about Easter without being preachy. It is one of the most important celebrations for Catholics, yet many people don’t understand the true significance of this day. It is celebrated by many non-Catholics as a time to buy new clothes and chocolate covered eggs. While the celebration of Easter is a good thing, the focus should not be the Easter Bunny. In a similar way that Santa Clause is not why Catholics celebrate Christmas.” The story – set in Raleigh and Cary – centers on the lives of two men whose paths cross during their youth and then again later in life. 919 ‹‹ COMMUNITY Traffic Light Installation Near Brier Creek School Delayed Installation of a traffic signal light at a busy intersection near Brier Creek Elementary School was not completed by December as expected due to delays in funding and extended fabrication time necessary for the metal poles. Al Grandy, division traffic engineer with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation now anticipates installation to occur by April at the intersection of Brier Creek Parkway and Arnold Palmer Drive/Vogel Street. He indicated the cost of the signal was $115,000, and that the installation completion date is an estimate. “(The signal) hasn’t been installed, but it is currently under construction,” Grandy said. “Once

the poles become available, the completion shouldn’t take that long.” Brier Creek Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and concerned parents and residents of Brier Creek Country Club last year participated in an on-line petition drive requesting the addition of the light. Parents cited the busy roadway and lack of a light for forcing them to drive their children or put them on a bus – despite living only a few blocks from the campus, located at 9801 Brier Creek Parkway. The Brier Creek Community Center also is located on the school campus. Grandy did not comment on the petition drive or reports of numerous traffic accidents at the intersection, but confirmed that NCDOT traffic engineers studied the intersection after a request from “a private citizen” – and determined that the location met the requirements to have a light installed.

919 ›› COMMUNITY Big Winds Collapse Condo Unit, Topple Trees Brier Creek area took the brunt of a freak storm in January that included 86 miles per hour winds shortly after 2 p.m. – a record high. The result was a lot of tree limbs and debris on the ground (including blockage of a lane of eastbound I-540 between Aviation Parkway Exit and Lumley Exit) and a condominium unit on Bruckhaus Street under

construction that toppled. Toll Brothers is the developer of the Cottages at Brier Creek condo project. Blame for the collapse was placed on wall bracing not yet being completed. Rubble was cleared from the site within days after the storm, and reconstruction of the new condominium unit was started immediately.

In our world today, technology is progressing at lightening speed and the profession of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is no exception. Today, with the ever advancing strides in dental implant rehabilitation, patients can now restore chewing forces, self confidence and quality of life. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or even a full upper or lower set of teeth. Carolina Braces Transforms Smiles Through Innovation, Passion, Excellence…and Fun! There’s a fun place to get braces? At Carolina Braces, which has offices in both Brier Creek and North Raleigh, that’s actually their motto: “The Fun Place for Braces!” “The atmosphere is definitely fun,” said Dr. Robert Kent, who has 25 years experience as an orthodontist in Raleigh. “When you enter both offices, you’re greeted by huge salt water aquariums teeming with beautiful fish. While you’re waiting for your appointment, you can grab a cup of coffee or bottled water and use one of our iPads, relax in our movie theater, or play video games and enter our current contests.” According to his wife, Donna, Dr. Kent definitely creates the lighthearted atmosphere at Carolina Braces. “My husband has such a great time and reputation with all of his patients – past and current, from ages 7 to 60,” she said. “He’s been a big part of this community so long, it’s hard to go anywhere without hearing, ‘Dr. Kent, Dr. Kent,’ and being surrounded by kids.” Dr. Kent also offers significant support to local schools, scout troops, dance studios, sports teams, churches and other groups and organizations within the community – which seems as much a part of his passion as is his profession. “Every morning when I get

ready for work I say, ‘I love my job’,” he said. “I love all aspects of orthodontics, but especially the relationships that develop between our patients and myself as treatment progresses and we reach our treatment goals.” A native of St. Louis, Dr. Kent received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in chemistry and zoology at UNC-Chapel Hill and achieved both a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and a Master of Orthodontic Sciences degree at Washington University of St. Louis. Dr. Kent is thrilled to help create smiles that have a major effect on self-image and self-esteem. “What most don’t realize is that orthodontics is a lot more than straight teeth. in having orthodontic treatment is a life changing process,” he said. Technology is also a big part of Carolina Braces, which is Raleigh’s leading provider of Damon Smile, the new generation of braces that eliminates the need for rubber bands and are much smaller, smoother, and less irritating to cheeks and gums. “Carolina Braces is also the only orthodontic office in Raleigh to provide patients with a comfortable, impression-free experience by providing 3D imaging using iTero and Lythos scanners,” said Dr. Kent, adding that his practice has expertise on TMJ treatment and is Raleigh’s only Top Elite Invisalign Adult and Teen Provider. But Dr. Kent quickly explains that a visit to his practice is not just about getting braces. “It’s the experience,” he stressed. “It is our team’s commitment to building lasting relationships – as well as providing not only the finest quality orthodontic treatment, but making the process as enjoyable as possible…every step of the way. The Top 5 Habits of Organized People Organization Isn’t a Natural Gift – It’s a Practice By GRAZIELLA MARENGI and JESSICA QUISON KRESS If you still struggle with clutter or aspire to be more organized, adapt these habits in your life and see how things change! • Put everything in its place: We all have many tiny loose items, such as batteries, paperclips, and do-dads that need a place. Clearly label baskets or bins in every location, such as playroom, office or pantry. When containers are clearly marked, then everyone in the household immediately knows what goes where. • Delegate household chores: Begin by having a family meeting to create a chore list. This is a great way to get every family member on the same page. Set ageappropriate chores for children and adults. • Set and review goals: While everyone’s goals are different, most of us want the same thing – time to do the fun stuff. Identify what you’re passionate about and then set

goals to create the time to pursue it. Write them down and review frequently. You’ll soon see how you’re spending your time and where you need to make adjustments. • Plan and manage time: Most organized people create allotted times for specific tasks from the moment their day starts. Keep a calendar of events that sync with your smartphone. Keep active alerts to ping as reminders throughout the day. No more forgetting or missing appointments. • Learn to purge: The key is to learn to separate and detach from possessions. If the items haven’t been touched or used in a year, it gets donated. Do this quarterly so it doesn’t get overwhelming. Once unnecessary items are identified, they can be taken to the nearest charity in town. California Closets is located at 8411 Glenwood Ave. in North Raleigh. For more information, call 919-785-1115 or visit www.californiaclosets.com/raleigh.

A Better Way to Buy a Mattress

Raleigh Durham Mattress Co. Offers High Quality, Low Prices, No High Pressure Tactics Raleigh Durham Mattress Co. simply offers a better way to buy a new mattress. Owner John Synan is committed to offering his customers the high quality mattress sets they are seeking at the lowest possible price – and without the confusion and high-pressure sales tactics. “After frustrating experiences trying to buy a mattress for myself, I felt there had to be a better and less expensive alternative,” said Synan. So, after thoroughly researching the mattress industry, Synan left a successful corporate career at the executive level in sales and management and created Raleigh Durham Mattress Co. His successful business model is based on three key strategies: Source from only two exceptional vendors that manufacture their mattresses in the U.S.; keep overhead costs to a minimum; and offer convenient appointments serving one customer at a time. The result is tremendous savings and a simplified purchase process passed on to his satisfied customers. “Rather than multiple mattress styles, high pressure salesmen offering ‘deals’ and questionable tactics, my customers enjoy a simple and straightforward personalized mattress buying experience,” said Synan.

Synan grew up in Durham, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, and is proud to be a part of the local business community providing high quality mattress sets at a fraction of the cost of high-priced mattress stores. Raleigh Durham Mattress Co. continues to grow thanks to the many satisfied customers now referring family, friends, and neighbors.

Easy Fudge Pie a Favorite

For Family of ‘ Chocoholics’

Karen Flanary’s Easy Fudge Pie originated with her mother, who used to make it for her Karen when she was a child – and later made it with Karen’s daughter, Alex. “It’s sort of a tradition,” said Flanary, a resident of Brier Creek’s Spyglass neighborhood. “This is our favorite dessert for special occasions.” Flanary – who grew up in Greenville, NC and secured both undergraduate and graduate degrees at East Carolina University – has two children. Alex is 11 and a 5th Grader, and son Tyler is a 7-year-old 2nd Grader. Both attend Brier Creek Elementary School. And all three of them enjoy preparing and eating this dish. “We like it because it’s very easy to make and my daughter can make it by herself, so she feels like a big girl,” she said. “When it comes to dessert, we are all chocoholics – specially my son!” www.919Magazine.com
