Carl Emberson is originally from the Fiji Islands and was educated in Australia. He is a graduate of the Swiss Hotel Association Management School Les Roches, with a career that spans nigh 40 years in over 10 countries from Fiji & Australia to Europe and just over 30 years in Latin American between Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, & Mexico. He now resides in Punta Mita in his present role as Director of Marketing & Operations of Punta Mita. For over a decade now Carl, an avid golfer, has been a passionate promoter and Ambassador of Punta Mita, one of America’s leading luxury destinations.

John McIntyre brings decades of knowledge to his role as Director of Punta Mita Golf Club. Leaving a career practicing law in Colorado and California to pursue his true passion for golf, he gained a wealth of international experience including time as the PGA Director of Golf for Frost Creek Country Club in Colorado and as the PGA Director for TPC Cancun Country Club. Since November 2017, John has overseen all golf operations and programming for both Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses in Punta Mita.

Lynne Bairstow For Lynne Bairstow, Mexico has become more of a home than her native United States. She currently lives in Mexico City, however over the past twenty years she has spent most of her time in Puerto Vallarta and the Punta Mita region. As the author of the Punta Mita book by Assouline, nine books about Mexico including the Frommer’s and Dummies guidebook series, she has developed a deep affection and respect for the customs, culture, and natural treasures of Mexico. Her travel articles on Mexico have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and various national magazines. Punta Mita is home for Lynne, where she enjoys her ideal lifestyle of startups and surfing.

Graham Dillamore Graham Dillamore is the Head Gardener at Hampton Court and Kensington Palace, having previously worked for the Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Why are they so

important?

Events bring joy!

family dinner, a wedding, a Nine, Whine, & Dine Sunday, or a Pickleball mixer! Because these kinds of events are so commonplace in our lives, we tend to overlook their significance. Ironically, in a crisis like COVID-19, the thing that people missed the most was their ability to catch up with loved ones. These simple events form lasting connections between families and communities; they are the true building blocks that make up a healthy society from the oldest to the youngest. What could be more important than that? Events promote important causes in Punta Mita. Our community prides itself on its consistent and active participation on so many fronts. Events allow for a platform of creativity. When it comes to amazing event creativity and design, we are spoiled in the options available: Large-scale events such as the Olympics or the Superbowl employ every design trick available to create the outlandish and the spectacular. Creativity can be seen and used in any event regardless of size or budget and we can be proud of the Punta Mita team that –year after year— creates over 50 events of different shapes and sizes ranging from the Signature Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf Classic to an early-morning 5K Fun Run. Our role in designing events is to create a design concept that truly gives the event an identity and emotion of its own. It’s about grabbing the attention of our event attendees from the get-go and sparking an emotion through inspiration, color, and the use of the basic elements and principles of design to engage all five senses. The aim? To create a feast of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell through creative design and execution. Events bring brands to life. Over the last decade, Punta Mita’s dynamic calendar of events has become renowned for its variety and quality, creating a global buzz, and contributing to put Punta Mita firmly on the map as a leading luxury resort destination. The media and goodwill that our events generate, both in the U.S. and Mexico, constantly reminds its audience what they love about Punta Mita. 8

Events encourage the sharing of ideas – think of the Punta Mita TechTalks that encourage discussion, respectful debate, and innovative ideas. Events which aim to bring life-changing conversation, action, and societal change. Events encourage the sharing of ideas. Events can stimulate and pulse with emotion: imagine caddying for the Walrus Craig Stadler in a match with Lorena Ochoa… Events create content which, for this scribe, has been one of the pillars of success in recent years. With that being said, in-person events can connect us in ways that no digital experience can. If there’s one thing we have learned from living through a global pandemic, it is that nothing can take the place of physically being with people. We really, really need human interaction and connection – and, that need also applies to events. While many are busily transforming their events wherever possible to digital environments, never before have we craved face-to-face, in-person experiences as much. With the stress, uncertainty, and isolation, it has never been more desirable to stay connected with fellow humans and environments and I am confident in predicting that "face-to-face" events will be more powerful than ever in a post-Coronavirus world. The fundamentals behind gathering, connecting, exploring, and playing aren’t going anywhere soon and neither is the live-events industry. "What could be more important than human connection through the simplest of experiences?" It is through the reflections made above that the Punta Mita Events Team is honored to put together another season of carefully curated events –many of which our fans are familiar with while also presenting new events. If there is one thing we are sure of, it is that these events have become part of our Viva Punta Mita lifestyle. They will, and can, only be possible with the support of our Residents and Guests, as well as of all the stakeholders that participate in making the events a reality. For that we thank you.

Irónicamente, en una crisis como la del COVID-19, lo que más extrañaban las personas era la oportunidad para ponerse al día con sus seres queridos. Estos eventos simples forman conexiones duraderas entre familias y círculos de amigos; son los verdaderos bloques de construcción que componen una sociedad saludable para todas las edades; desde los más viejos hasta los más jóvenes. ¿Qué podría ser más importante que eso? Los eventos tienen un efecto importante en Punta Mita. Nuestra comunidad se enorgullece de su participación constante de las personas que habitan en Punta Mita y por ser parte de ellos. Los eventos permiten tener una plataforma de creatividad y diseño sobre todo cuando hablamos de eventos sorprendentes, de eventos a gran escala como

los Juegos Olímpicos o el Superbowl, ya que utilizan toques de diseño disponibles para crear lo extravagante y espectacular. La creatividad se puede ver y utilizar en cualquier evento sin importar el tamaño o el presupuesto y podemos estar orgullosos del equipo de Punta Mita que, año tras año, crea más de 50 eventos de diferentes formas y tamaños que van desde el icónico “Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf Classic” hasta una carrera divertida de 5 km al amanecer. Nuestro papel en el diseño de eventos es crear un concepto que realmente le dé una identidad y una emoción única. Se trata de captar la atención de los asistentes desde el primer momento y provocar una emoción a través de la inspiración, el color y el uso de los elementos y principios básicos del diseño para involucrar los cinco sentidos. ¿El objetivo? Crear un ambiente de “celebración a la vista, el oído, el tacto, el gusto y el olfato a través del diseño y la ejecución de detalles creativos, que lo hacen único e irrepetible para todos.”

Los eventos dan vida a las marcas. Durante la última década, el dinámico calendario de eventos de Punta Mita se ha hecho famoso por su variedad y calidad, creando un revuelo mundial y contribuyendo a poner a Punta Mita firmemente en el mapa como un destino turístico distinguido. Los medios de comunicación y la información que generan nuestros eventos, tanto en los EE. UU. como en México, le recuerdan constantemente a su audiencia lo que les encanta de Punta Mita. Los eventos fomentan el intercambio de ideas, pienso en las TechTalks de Punta Mita que fomentan la discusión, el debate y las ideas innovadoras. Eventos que tienen como objetivo generar conversaciones, acciones y cambios sociales que cambien la vida. Definitivamente los eventos fomentan el intercambio de ideas. Los eventos pueden estimular y hacer latir la emoción, ¡imagínese poder ser el “caddie” de la “Morsa” Craig Stadler en un partido con Lorena Ochoa!. Los eventos crean contenido que, para este escriba, ha sido uno de los pilares del éxito en los últimos años. Dicho esto, los eventos presenciales pueden conectarnos de formas que ninguna experiencia digital puede hacerlo. Si hay algo que hemos aprendido al vivir una pandemia mundial, es que nada puede reemplazar el estar físicamente con las personas. Realmente

necesitamos interacción y conexión humana y esa necesidad también se aplica a los eventos. Si bien muchos están intentando transformar sus eventos siempre que sea posible a entornos digitales, nunca habíamos anhelado tanto las experiencias cara a cara y en persona. Con el estrés, la incertidumbre y el aislamiento, nunca ha sido más deseable mantenerse conectado con otros humanos y entornos. Confío en predecir que los eventos “cara a cara” serán más poderosos que nunca en un mundo posterior al coronavirus. Los fundamentos detrás de la reunión, la conexión, la exploración y el juego no van a desaparecer pronto y tampoco la industria de los eventos en vivo. "¿Qué podría ser más importante que la conexión humana a través de las experiencias más simples?" Es a través de lo mencionado anteriormente que el equipo de Eventos Punta Mita tiene el honor de organizar otra temporada de eventos con los cuales nuestros fanáticos están familiarizados y al mismo tiempo, presentaremos nuevos de los cuales estamos seguros de que los disfrutarán. Estos eventos se han convertido en parte de nuestro estilo de vida “Viva Punta Mita”. Punta Mita, a sought-after resort development for vacationers and many second home buyers stretches across several of the most beautiful beaches in Riviera Nayarit. “Over the years, the destination has expanded to include multiple hotels and 19 residential communities,” said Carl Emberson, director of operations at Punta Mita. “Our amenities are best in class and our social calendar is packed with activities from the Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf Classic (with celebrity chefs) to our inaugural Pro-Am.” Punta Mita, un desarrollo turístico muy solicitado por los vacacionistas y muchos compradores de segundas residencias, se extiende por varias de las playas más hermosas de la Riviera Nayarit. Mexico’s Benchmark of Luxury The 2022 Punta Mita Pro-Am was an opportunity for fellow members and their golf professional to enjoy competition and camaraderie at one of the world’s finest golf retreats. Punta Mita has been more than two decades in the making. The Four Seasons and St. Regis resorts, situated on a spear-shaped peninsula, offer 9.5 miles of Pacific coastline, multiple sandy beaches, five beach clubs, and two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses. Located on the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands and boasting more than 340 days of sunshine per year, you are virtually guaranteed sunny skies and balmy temperatures. “In about the time it takes to watch one movie, we are able to fly from Northern California to Puerto Vallarta,” smiled David Jackson, head golf professional at Tehama Golf Club. “I’ve always found trips south of the border to be ideal. Locals are warm and welcoming. You immediately have the feeling they’re glad you’re here.” Sand Between the Toes The Pro-Am 2022 kicked off in style with a gourmet ocean¬front dinner at the Punta Mita Sufito Restaurant & Ocean Club. Guests dined on ceviche, grilled fish, and a warm chocolate brownie with their favorite drink in hand. As the sun set over the surf break, Jean Van de Velde (Punta Mita ambassador) greeted the group. “Punta Mita is a true paradise on earth,” detailed Van de Velde. “I have competed around the world— from Biarritz, France, to Punta del Este, Uruguay—and I chose to live here. “Our two Nicklaus Signature courses aren’t pushovers. You need to learn where to place the ball. Strategy is key and the best angle to attack the pin isn’t necessarily obvi¬ous. Greens hit in regulation don’t guarantee a low score. I will go out on a limb and say the greens on the Bahia Course are downright diabolical.”

Day One: Horse Race Shootout Jack Nicklaus’s interest in design started in the 1960s when Pete Dye asked for his input on what would become The Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio.

At the end of the first round, the stage was set for an exciting finish with three teams separated by four shots and only one shot separating the top four golf professionals (jockeying for a $6,000 cash purse).

Just before leaving for Pro-Am, I asked The Golden Bear for his advice playing Punta Mita. “A lot has changed in the game when I was playing with wooden woods and balata balls. My advice is don’t try shots beyond your capability. Enjoy the tournament and don’t let an errant shot weigh you down,” advised Jack Nicklaus. After a practice round on the Pacifico Course, twelve teams joined the $100 buy-in to compete in an always fun, four-hole Horse Race Shootout with an open bever¬age cart and soft rock music playing in the background.

“It was exciting to be in first place on the leaderboard,” said Scott Miller, director of golf at North Ranch Country Club in Califor¬nia. “Although we knew early bedtime would prove beneficial, I think we im¬bibed more than we should have at Mary Mita—the beachside bar at the St. Regis.”

Eight teams competed in the sudden death chip-off on the first hole to advance. On the second hole, pars were safe from elimination. At the conclusion of the third hole, team Krugman/Mizier was $250 richer. The final hole ended on the famous “Tail of the Whale”par 3. After the remaining two teams hit it greenside, a chip-off was in store. “As I approached the tee, I kept saying to myself, it’s breezy, swing easy,” said Pete Charles-ton on Team Terravita Country Club from Scottsdale, Ari¬zona. “I felt an extra club was in order,” expressed Ruben Gonzalez on Team Gran Coyote from Nayarit, Mexico. Both teams felt the jitters and made bogie, resulting in a chip-off. Team Charleston/ Peterson took home the spoils with $600, and team Gonzalez/Eble was runner-up with $350 in their wallets. Day Two: First Round of Competition Perfect weather conditions greeted teams on the Bahia Course. The format for the Pro-Am was two best balls— one gross, one net—with amateurs playing to 80 percent of their handicap.

Day Three: Final Round & Awards Dinner “Punta Mita is a definite crowd pleaser,” stated Brian Brake, director of golf at Blackhawk Country Club in California. “You can’t help but be a little intimi¬dated when you approach the famous Tail of the Whale signature par-3 on the Pacifico Course. Both courses play firm, and a twoputt isn’t a guarantee.” As the teams completed play, many gathered around the leaderboard set up next to the oceanside 18th green on the Pacifico Course. “A fitting end to a terrific couple of days under the warm tropical sun!” grinned Ulf Sandberg, amateur on Team Gran Coyote. The night concluded with guests and competitors dining on an expertly prepared dinner and wine pairing prepared by Chef Sergio Chavez at the Pacifico Beach Club while trophies were presented. “Our trophies are a magnificent piece of art made entirely by hand. The design honors the amazing spectacle that we can witness every year, the migration of the humpback whale to the warm waters of Banderas Bay. Francisco Sotres designed the trophies as a symbol of the local Huichol culture,” beamed Emberson.

brief history: the Punta Mita Golf Academy came to life just four short years ago with the construction of the physical Academy building and the hiring of Top 100 instructor Tom Stickney III. A commitment to enriching the Punta Mita golf experience underpinned these efforts and has continued to propel the Academy forward ever since. Just as Mr. Stickney (“Stick” to just about everyone) decided to explore new career opportunities in May 2021, the Punta Mita family welcomed a new ambassador, instructor, and friend in Tour professional and industry veteran Jean Van De Velde. In a wonderful example of serendipity, Mr. Van De Velde relocated to the Puerto Vallarta area with his wife Jeovana after spending significant time here during the early Covid months. To the great delight of our membership and all Club partners, it was a mutually beneficial opportunity for him to become a resident instructor for our Academy. His personality, teaching style, and embrace of the community has added something very special. Also in 2021, short game expert and inventor of the SAM PuttLab, Marius Filmalter relocated to the area and came to us offering his Tourproven instructional expertise. Marius spent many years in the Dallas area teaching college golfers, competitive amateurs, and Tour professionals. For those seeking putting and short game guidance, Marius offers knowledge and insight delivered with a refreshingly frank perspective. To further enhance the member and client instructional experience, we invited a series of “Guest Instructors” throughout the 20212022 high season. The program goals were simple yet multi-faceted invite individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to golf instruction, have a well-known presence within the industry, and had yet to experience the magic of Punta Mita. 16

In the program’s inaugural season, we welcomed (in chronological order) Dave Stockton Jr., Sean Lanyi, Mark Wiebe, Virgil Herring, and Parker McLachlin. Each of these well-respected gentlemen brought something special to the table: for example, Mr. Lanyi specializes in the now-famous AimPoint putting technique used by many PGA Tour professionals. When you see a golfer standing astride their intended putting line, feeling the subtle undulations at their feet, and using their fingers to determine the amount of break it is the AimPoint technique they are employing. Mr. Lanyi will be returning for the 2022-2023 season. Similarly interesting, Parker McLachlin recently partnered with Titleist to offer his patented “flight lines”, visual aids as an add-on for golfers who create a wedge through Vokey’s Wedge Works program. Check out more about it in this golf.com article on the QR code below. This is a first for Titleist and Vokey, and an exciting validation of Parker’s “short game chef” online moniker. Parker will rejoin our Punta Mita family in 2023. These instructors, it turned out, brought not only world-class instruction but also amazing stories about PGA Tour professionals and a wealth of global connections. Mark Wiebe shared stories with our members about playing

against Tom Watson and other legends, as well as how it felt, at age 55, to win the 2013 Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale. You will not find a greater gentleman and representative of the game; Mr. Wiebe returns to Punta Mita again in 2023. Equally important to the skills they brought and the stories they shared, each of these gentlemen have become a new Punta Mita ambassador. They can now speak from experience about our community of friends and members from around North America, our gorgeous coastal golf courses, our amazing beach clubs, and how every day brings a new discovery. Without exception, each instructor observed that a week wasn’t nearly enough time to discover all the treats Punta Mita has to offer. The program has been an unqualified success for everyone involved and we believe it will only gain energy as it evolves and becomes more refined. For the 2022-2023 season, we look forward to promoting our instructional ambassadors and to welcoming new blood as well. The program begins in November 2022 and runs through April 2023.

El compromiso de enriquecer la experiencia de golf de Punta Mita apuntaló estos esfuerzos y ha seguido impulsando la Academia desde entonces. If you weren't a golfer, what would you be? If I weren't a golfer, I would have liked to be an Olympic gymnast and/or a lecturer. I love connecting with people and being able to transmit what I have experienced. What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to face during your career as a golfer? My biggest obstacle has been injuries, and these have led me to doubt, question myself, and to have ghosts in my head that cloud my goals. When you manage to win and become your best friend of your inner voice is when you can be more aware of your emotions and thus use them to your favor. If you could change any aspect or rule of golf, what would be? If you land on a divot on the fairway, you can place it on the fairway. What is your favorite club? My favorites are the putter and driver. What would be your dream foursome? Tiger, Seve, Lorena, and me. Gaby, what does Punta Mita mean to you? For me, Punta Mita means being able to disconnect to connect! It is a magical place where I breathe peace, I can rest, and at the same time I can also enjoy the best golf facilities to train for my seasons in the LPGA.

Cuando logras ganar y convertirte en la mejor amiga de tu voz interior, es cuando puedes ser más consciente de tus emociones y así utilizarlas a tu favor. Si pudieras cambiar algún aspecto o regla del golf, ¿cuál sería? Si tu pelota cae en un divot en el fairway lo puedes acomodar afuera del divot en el mismo fairway. ¿Cuál es tu club favorito? Mis favoritos son el putter y el driver. ¿Cuál sería el foursome de tus sueños? Tiger Woods, Severiano, Lorena Ochoa y yo. Gaby, ¿qué significa para ti Punta Mita? ¡Para mí, Punta Mita significa poder desconectarse para conectarse! Abraham Ancer

When did you start playing golf and who introduced you to the sport? I started playing golf when I was very young, thanks to my dad who took me to a golf course for the first time in Reynosa Tamaulipas. How did the idea of making your own Tequila brand come about? After college, I started to like the process of how Tequila was made since, as a Mexican it was always like a dream to have my own brand. When I met my partner Aaron, we talked about this idea of Flecha Azul tequila. Abraham, if you had not been given the opportunity to become a golfer and develop yourself as such, what would you do? If I hadn't been a golfer, I really like adrenaline, so… cars! I think car racing in Formula 1, that would be an incredible profession! Why do they call you Turco? They call me El Turco thanks to a friend named Rodolfo Cazaubon who also played professional golf when I was little. They called me “El Arabito” also referring to the fact that my surname Ancer is of Syrian descent. What would be your dream foursome? It would be my dad, Severiano Ballesteros, Ben Hogan, and me. Abraham, why Punta Mita? What has your experience here been like so far? Because it is in Mexico, because Punta Mita does things in an incredible way, I have had great experiences with family and friends, and we have always been treated spectacularly. Now, for us, it is a tradition to go to Punta Mita every year.

¿Cuándo empezaste a jugar al golf y quién te introdujo en este deporte? Empecé a jugar golf cuando era muy joven, gracias a mi papá que me llevó por primera vez a un campo de golf en Reynosa Tamaulipas. ¿Cómo surge la idea de hacer tu propia marca de Tequila? Después de la universidad, me empezó a gustar el proceso de elaboración del tequila ya que, como mexicano, siempre fue un sueño tener mi propia marca. Gaby is a Mexican golfer who was a part of the Mexican delegation at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where she served as the national flag bearer during the opening ceremony.

Born in McAllen, Texas, Abraham Ancer is a talented Mexican professional golfer who plays on the LIV Golf. He attended high school and college in the United States to provide for more opportunities for developing his golf career. Abraham has dual Mexican and American nationalities and represented Mexico at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In 2016, she graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor's degree in artistic communication and a minor in sports administration. Gaby, throughout her career, has stood out for being an exemplary woman in this sport, thanks to the tenacity, commitment, and discipline that she has maintained to achieve all that she is today. Gaby began to visit Punta Mita during her vacations, when she fell in love with the destination, and from there, a relationship was born between Punta Mita and this talented golfer. Punta Mita, in addition to being proud to be considered Gaby's favorite destination, is also honored to be a featured presence on the golf bag that she always carries in her tournaments. The relationship between Abraham and Punta Mita began during the Masters tournament, a world renown event played annually in Augusta, Georgia. From meeting him at that time and event, we knew that Abraham should be a part of the Punta Mita ambassador team: as he is a Mexican golfer as well as a fellow admirer of Jack Nicklaus, the legendary designer of Punta Mita’s two signature golf courses. We believed that this would be an invaluable opportunity to join forces and collaborate together. Both Gaby and Abraham are among the most promising players on the LPGA and LIV Golf, respectively. he Pacific Cup, which began in 2018, has since become one of Punta Mita’s favorite golf events for all of our Membership. Every season, a selection of Punta Mita players goes head-to-head in match play competition over 2 days against a number of visiting teams from Mexico, the U.S., & Canada. Drama, tension, great golf, camaraderie, and sportsmanship are served in equal measure accompanied by social events around the peninsula of Punta Mita. It is an event that transcends golf yet remains true to the spirit of golf. Since it began in a match versus the Colonial Country Club in early 2018, Punta Mita Teams (Ladies, Mixed, and Men) have played 17 two-day matches in a reduced Ryder Cup format and have a sterling record of 13 Wins and 4 Losses. They have not been beaten on home turf since January 2021 and hold a winning streak of 8 matches. Over 60 different Members have formed part of the teams since its inception. Known for their inventive integration of ancestral Mexican culture and architecture with the exuberant nature of Mexico, Architect Juan Collignon and his partners Karen Collignon and Manuel Mestre have built 25 existing residences, with another 5 under development in Punta Mita. Within these, we can perceive the unique dreams of their clients represented in the distinctive styles of Casa Koko, Casa Tau, Casa Palmasola, Casa Majani, Villa Solaz, Casa El Milagro Diario, Casa Roka, Rancho la Ola, and Casa Herradura. The diversity that is demonstrated in their projects can range from consummate minimalism to the organic abundance, but each also includes unifying elements of the Collignon signature style of effortlessly weaving together nature into the harmonious living spaces. "Punta Mita is a harmonious environment, where the Mexican Mediterranean architecture is the protagonist in different versions, some more vernacular – and others more rational and sophisticated," are the words of Architect Manolo Mestre. He has found inspiration in the natural elements that surround this peninsula ranging from the small ripples in the water from a shoal of fish swimming just below the surface, to the enchanting sound of water that served as inspiration for the creation of Casa TAU’s impeccable rooms overlooking the sea. The creativity and inspiration of Architect Mestre goes beyond the ordinary: he claims it can be traced back to the primordial forms and the memories that come from the womb. It is from these trace memories from which the sensual forms in his designs arise, that embrace the space where ideas do not stop, because there are no corners, and where everything flows and is lost into the horizon. We can find forms such as these in Palmasola, another of the emblematic residences he has created in Punta Mita with his partner, Architect Juan Collignon. Always trying to break the projects into separate bodies surrounded by water and/or gardens, it is important to the architect that the interior life mixes with the exterior and creates a binomial where the knowing if you are

inside or outside blurs together. In his designs, water plays a purifying and healing role, a way to discover and experience a disconnection from the outside world while reconnecting with our inner self. He also incorporates the element of surprise and mystery that invites us to discover what follows—the water that heals and transports us to a sense of serenity and peace. Using local materials that do not feel foreign to the place, and also sophisticated home-intelligence technology, the architect has managed to provide his owners with a complete sensory experience. One example of his work in Punta Mita is Casa Majani, one of the most archetypal of his residences, where two walls embrace us upon arrival, welcoming us to enter the magicalinterior world of this paradise. In Casa Roka, the architect pursued a playful game of elements such as an inverted boat that covers us and invites us to reach the murmur of a small waterfall that connects the bridge to the master bedroom. A series of interior courtyards that interconnect with each other connects and disconnects us again and again, in a game of indoor-outdoor spaces that all the hallmark of this project. One of his philosophies is: "In a vacation home, the playful aspect is very important. If I don't have fun designing the house, the owners won't have fun living in it." Architect Mestre has provided Punta Mita with exceptional residential designs that awaken all the playful senses of those fortunate enough to experience his work.

Harmonic is the word to define the work of architect Sordo Madaleno. He always seeks to conceptualize his projects based on the inspiration provided by the place, and in the case of Punta Mita, this translates into its privileged location rich in nature and unparalleled views. Architect Sordo has been very clear that his architecture must be immersed in the site carefully, to have a harmonious relationship between nature and the project he is conceptualizing and creating. He believes that his buildings are enhanced by the interaction of nature in each of the spaces, and designs in such a way that the line between landscape and architecture is lost, merging into one. He believes that the integration of natural forms, elements, and materials give dignity to the architecture with the passage of time, such as stone and wood that give a unique identity to each of their projects generating colors and shades that retain their essence over time. Such spaces give the owner a sense of belonging, while

creating a direct relationship between nature and architecture. His projects become part of the landscape and the landscape becomes part of the project. “Un entorno armónico, donde la arquitectura mediterránea mexicana es el protagonista en diferentes versiones, unas más vernáculas y otras más racionales y sofisticadas” son las palabras del arquitecto Manolo Mestre. Él ha encontrado inspiración en los elementos naturales que rodean a la península, desde las pequeñas ondulaciones en el agua de un banco de peces nadando justo debajo de la superficie, hasta el encantador sonido del agua que sirvió de inspiración para la creación de las impecables habitaciones con vistas al mar de Casa TAU. La creatividad e inspiración del Arquitecto Mestre va más allá de lo cotidiano, afirma que se puede remontar a las formas primigenias y a las memorias que provienen del vientre materno. Es por estos recuerdos trazados de donde surgen en sus diseños estas formas sensuales que abrazan el espacio donde las ideas no se detienen, porque no hay esquinas, todo fluye y se pierde en el horizonte. También incorpora el elemento de sorpresa y misterio que nos invita a descubrir lo que sigue: el agua que cura y nos transporta a una sensación de serenidad y paz. Utilizando materiales locales que no resultan extraños al lugar, y también sofisticada tecnología de inteligencia doméstica, el arquitecto ha conseguido proporcionar a sus propietarios una experiencia sensorial completa. Un ejemplo de su trabajo en Punta Mita es la Casa Majani, una de sus residencias más arquetípicas, donde dos paredes nos abrazan al llegar, dándonos la bienvenida para entrar en el mundo mágico-interior de este paraíso. En Casa Roka, el arquitecto persiguió un juego de elementos como un barco invertido que nos cubre y nos invita a alcanzar el murmullo de una pequeña cascada que conecta el puente con el dormitorio principal. Una serie de patios interiores que se interconectan entre sí nos conectan y desconectan una y otra vez, en un juego de espacios interior-exterior que son el sello de este proyecto. Una de sus filosofías es: “En una casa de vacaciones, el aspecto lúdico es muy importante. Si yo no me divierto diseñando la casa los propietarios no se divierten viviéndolas”, el arquitecto Mestre ha brindado a Punta Mita excepcionales diseños residenciales que despiertan todos los sentidos lúdicos de quienes tienen la suerte de experimentar su obra.

MADALENO

Armónico es la palabra que define el trabajo del arquitecto Sordo Madaleno. Él siempre busca conceptualizar sus proyectos a partir de la inspiración que le brinda el lugar, y en el caso de Punta Mita, esto se traduce en su privilegiada ubicación rica en naturaleza y vistas inigualables. El arquitecto Sordo ha tenido muy claro que su arquitectura debe estar inmersa en el sitio cuidadosamente, para tener una relación armoniosa entre la naturaleza y el proyecto que está conceptualizando y creando. Considera que sus edificios se realzan por la interacción de la naturaleza en cada uno de los espacios, y diseña de tal manera que la línea entre el paisaje y la arquitectura se pierde, fundiéndose en uno solo. Considera que la integración de formas, elementos y materiales naturales dan dignidad a la arquitectura con el paso del tiempo, como la piedra y la madera que dan una identidad única a cada uno de sus proyectos generando colores y matices que conservan su esencia con el paso del tiempo. Estos espacios dan al propietario un sentido de pertenencia, a la vez que crean una relación directa entre la naturaleza y la arquitectura. EPIC VILLAS TV Brings Hollywood to Punta Mita

rom stunning ocean views to palatial hideaways, it’s no wonder why seasoned Hollywood producers Shane Farley and Alex Boylan decided to bring their television show Epic Villas here to Punta Mita, Mexico, to feature the stunning getaways which reside on this private peninsula. Having traveled the globe showcasing some of the most illustrious vacation homes, Farley and Boylan were immediately struck with the understated majesty of Punta Mita, and decided to turn their lens on it, hoping to share some of the beauty that exists beyond the gates and inside of the a select few of the most exclusive residences for the world to see. Joining Boylan on this adventure is four-time Emmy Award-winning producer Shane Farley, a TV veteran who has worked on shows such as The Voice, The Rachel Ray Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Steve Harvey Show, and The Wayne Brady Show just to name a few. With over 25 years in the business, Farley has a keen understanding of what the public wants, which in this case is a taste of paradise. “After such a hard few years, more than ever people want to relax and embrace life. We are giving people a glimpse of what life could be like if they just took a break for a while, and also showing those who are still anxious about crowds that they can have a first-class experience without the thousands of guests that come along with staying at a typical resort or hotel. I think this really is the new frontier of luxury travel,” said Farley. Farley’s hypothesis has already been proven correct. Mike O’Hara, General Manager of Casa Palmasola, says that being on Epic Villas has been monumentally impactful in expanding their client base. “The experience of being on Epic Villas has been invaluable to our business. It has provided us with outreach that we have never tapped into before. Usually, most of our guests came from the West Coast and Texas, but we are seeing a tremendous amount of East Coast guests all telling us how much our episode inspired them to visit us.” O’Hara, a former 5-star hotelier, agrees with Farley that private villas are the wave of the future, especially in our post-pandemic world.

“The market has changed for private travel homes due to the pandemic. People want seclusion and security, especially celebrities who come here. Epic Villas have provided would-be travelers with the opportunity to see exactly what they are going to get. They say to us, ‘We watched your video and knew this place was the perfect spot.” In addition to Casa Palmasola, Epic Villas has also featured Casa Tau, Casa Koko, Casa Querencia, Casa Del Faro, Casa Tesoro, and Casa Brisa, and the world has taken notice! In fact, since appearing on Epic Villas, Casa Tau’s General Manager Sabrina Franchini estimates that 60 percent of all guests have watched and commented on their episode. “We have gotten so much feedback,” laughed Franchini, who said that the production team really brought out “the best” of the sophisticated estate. Professionalism and an uncanny ability to highlight outdoor and indoor intricacies is perhaps their signature. Each episode is like a visual symphony, balancing the inherent splendor of the natural surroundings with each home’s distinct architecture, design, and unique amenities. The idea is to present something truly authentic to the property. “Working with the Epic Villas team was amazing. They came to the villa already researching everything from the floor plans to the most specific detail, knowing exactly what they wanted to show. Even from a technical standpoint, they knew the best way to capture it in the sunlight. The crew was not only professional but so kind to work with. It was wonderful,” said Isabel Luna of Casa Koko. It appears the experience has been mutually beneficial for the producers, as well. When asked about his time shooting in Punta Mita, Farley replied, “This has been the most fun on-set that I have ever had, and our audience can sense that. We don’t need green screens or movie magic. The houses and the nature of Punta Mita speak for themselves and each one tells its own story.”

When you are born in Nayarit it is impossible not to grow up surrounded by fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables that are a constant in this region. These all form the core of inspiration for Chef Cervando, originally from Valle de Banderas, Nayarit. He has adopted a unique style of combining these seasonally fresh ingredients into his dishes, while utilizing a mix of classic and modern cooking methods. During his more than 15 years of experience, he has had the opportunity to work in a variety of restaurants in the region, culminating in his current position as Chef of Punta Mita’s Kupuri Beach Club. Included among his delicious creations are his famous ceviche with coconut milk, kefir lime oil, and seasonal vegetables, as well as the favorite of Kupuri’s diners, the grilled fish tacos. Chef Cervando’s tacos are prepared with fresh fish marinated with garlic and lemon, then grilled to imbue it with a smoky, woody flavor. The strips of fish are served in a flour or handmade corn tortilla, with a finishing touch of a special sauce and salad -all reflecting the traditional flavors of the region.

KUPURI BEACH CLUB

CERVANDO VILLANUEVA Cuando se nace en Nayarit es imposible no crecer rodeado de pescado fresco, frutas y verduras que son una constante en esta región. Todo esto forma el núcleo de inspiración del Chef Cervando, originario de Valle de Banderas, Nayarit. Ha adoptado un estilo único para combinar estos ingredientes frescos de temporada en sus platillos, al tiempo que utiliza una mezcla de métodos de cocina clásicos y modernos. Durante sus más de 15 años de experiencia, Cervando ha tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en una variedad de restaurantes de la región, culminando en su actual posición como Chef del Club de Playa Kupuri de Punta Mita. Entre sus deliciosas creaciones se encuentra su famoso ceviche con leche de coco, aceite de lima kéfir y verduras de temporada, así como el favorito de los comensales de Kupuri, los Tacos de Pescado a la Parrilla. Preparados con pescado fresco marinado con ajo y limón que coloca sobre la parrilla para conseguir ese sabor ahumado y amaderado. Reliving memories is part of the magic of gastronomy, as diners relate flavors back to people or experiences that were created in past years –some, since childhood. When you go back in time to the traditional cuisine of your grandparents, you undoubtedly come back to that sense of pure love that was transmitted through every bite. For Chef Ivan, these experiences led him to discover his love for cooking, learning from his grandmother how to make handmade tortillas, salsas, mole, and other Mexican delicacies. When he moved to Andorra la Vieja and started working in the restaurant "La Borda del Rector”, he began to define his style of cooking -mixing mountain wood-fired cooking with ocean-oriented cuisine, ultimately becoming the talented chef he is today. Now, as Chef of Pacifico Beach Club, Chef Iván uses traditional and modern techniques, and combining ingredients from the Pacific coastal areas of Baja and Sinaloa to create a menu of wood-fired dishes. His signature dish is the Zarandeado Fish, where the combination of aromas and flavors arising from the mix of spices that form a crispy grilled crust are a work of art. His Chef’s specialty zarandeado sauce is a revival of memories and traditions for the Chef that have been passed from generation to generation.

PACIFICO BEACH CLUB

IVÁN VALLEJO Revivir recuerdos es parte de la magia de la gastronomía, ya que los comensales relacionan los sabores con personas o experiencias que fueron creadas en años pasados, algunos desde la infancia. Cuando se retrocede en el tiempo a la cocina tradicional de los abuelos, sin duda se vuelve a esa sensación de amor puro que se transmitía en cada bocado. Para el chef Iván, estas experiencias lo llevaron a descubrir su amor por la cocina, aprendiendo de su abuela como hacer tortillas hechas a mano, salsas, moles y otras delicias mexicanas. Cuando se mudó a Andorra la Vieja y empezó a trabajar en el restaurante "La Borda del Rector", empezó a definir su estilo de cocina, mezclando la cocina de montaña a la leña con la cocina del mar, convirtiéndose finalmente en el talentoso chef que es hoy. Ahora, como chef del Club de Playa Pacifico, el chef Iván utiliza técnicas tradicionales y modernas, e ingredientes de las zonas costeras del Pacífico, de la Baja y Sinaloa para crear un menú de especialidades a la leña. Su plato estrella es el Pescado Zarandeado, donde la combinación de aromas y sabores que surgen de la mezcla de especias y la crujiente corteza a la parrilla son una obra de arte. Su especialidad, la salsa de zarandeado, es para el Chef un cúmulo de recuerdos y tradiciones que han pasado de generación en generación.

In the culinary world there are countless techniques that, when well executed, are capable of transporting diners to the place of origin of those dishes. Such is the case of Chef Rogelio, who after more than 9 years of working alongside Chef Yasuo Asai, ambassador of JapaneseAsian gastronomy in Mexico and founder of the ASAI restaurants, has amazed us with his artisanal cooking technique, which he learned from his mentor. His talents have led him to this day to be chosen by Chef Yasuo himself to be the Chef of the kitchen of ASAI Punta Mita. Distinguished by his artisanal technique in the preparation of the dishes, one which stands out is the Fatty Tuna Niguiri, where the attention to detail extends from the washing of the rice 6 to 7 times in fresh water, to the preparation of the Nikiri sauce consisting of a mixture of sauce, sake and mirin, and ending with a show that transports us to Japan as we observe the chef hand modeling each of the Niguiris presented on the plate accompanied by pickled ginger and wasabi. This dish is among the most representative of the menu, not only for its manner of preparation but also for the freshness and quality of the ingredients that comprise it.

ROGELIO HERNÁNDEZ En el mundo culinario existen innumerables técnicas que, al ser bien ejecutadas, son capaces de transportar a los comensales al lugar de origen de esos platillos. Tal es el caso del Chef Rogelio, quien después de más de 9 años de trabajar al lado del Chef Yasuo Asai, embajador de la gastronomía japonesa-asiática en México y fundador de los restaurantes ASAI, nos ha sorprendido con su técnica de cocina artesanal, la cual aprendió de su mentor. Su talento lo ha llevado a ser elegido por el propio Chef Yasuo para ser el Chef de la cocina de ASAI Punta Mita. Caracterizándose por su artesanal técnica en la preparación de los platillos, entre los que destaca el Niguiri de Atún Graso, donde la atención al detalle se extiende desde el lavado del arroz de 6 a 7 veces en agua fresca, hasta la preparación de la salsa Nikiri que consiste en una mezcla de salsa, sake y mirin, para terminar con un espectáculo que nos transporta a Japón al observar al chef modelar a mano cada uno de los Niguiris presentados en el plato acompañados de jengibre encurtido y wasabi. Este plato es uno de los más representativos de la carta, no sólo por su forma de preparación sino también por la frescura y calidad de los ingredientes que lo componen. 61

Chef Maria Carla Leal leads the kitchen of the immensely popular El Surf Club, where she showcases her 18 years of experience as well as her passion for gastronomy. Chef Carla has worked in 5-Diamond hotels including the St. Regis Punta Mita, alongside the renowned Chef Sylvain Desbois. There, she directed the various dining establishments of the hotel including Las Marietas, Sea Breeze, and the haute cuisine Carolina restaurant. Currently Chef Carla’s cuisine is characterized as a mixture of Mediterranean style food with a Mexican influence, featuring dishes such as paella, rossejat, and her specialty, Gambas al Ajillo – shrimp sauteed with garlic, olive oil, a touch of sauvignon blanc, and the signature chiles – which combine to ignite the fire of flavor. At Sufito and Sufi Restaurant, Chef César's creative talents and more than 10 years of experience has positioned them as one of the favorite restaurants of both Punta Mita's residents and visitors. Chef César maintains a balance between the restaurant's favorite dishes while continuing to innovate. He mixes global and Mediterranean cuisine with locally fresh ingredients. A highlight of the menu is their Grilled Fish, with a preparation beginning with a top-secret marinade featuring chili peppers and spices, after which the fish are skewered on a bamboo stick for the traditional cooking method above a bed of embers in the sand. It’s a dish that was inspired by the traditional outdoor cooking style on the beach alongside Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta, and its flavors and aroma manage to awaken the appetite of the most demanding palates.

s one who is passionate about water sports, I’ve been asked many times, “…what makes Punta Mita so spectacular?” it’s an easy question to answer: it’s the geography! Punta Mita is a spectacular headland that juts out into the Pacific Ocean on the northern tip of Banderas Bay, which is a geographical marvel in itself, as it is one of the largest bays in the Americas. With the Sierra Madre Mountain range sheltering its southern flank, this combines to create a world class surf panorama! The three revealing exposures of Punta Mita offer great spots for Northern and Southern hemisphere swells that come from storms generated during two primary swell seasons. Low pressure systems create pressure on the ocean surface, and - like a beach ball in a bathtub –the swell radiates from the center and sends swells in every direction. The swells clean up as they move towards Mexico and once they hit the Punta Mita headland, they wrap into the bay around the different breaks. The dedicated few who get out of bed early and direct their calls to voice mail are out enjoying a precious few hours of glassy meditation.

The Winter season that extends from October to March is a great season for beginner and intermediate surfers, as the swells come from the north and wrap around to the southern exposed beaches like El Faro and La Lancha, creating glassy sets with long running right handers. The Summer season, from April to September, can get a little “heavy” and the local pros keep an eye on forecasting apps like windy.com to get a glimpse into the future surf conditions. The Southern Hemisphere swells can occasionally bring some bad weather, but for the most part we stay protected by the Sierra Madre Mountain range to the South. Keep your eyes peeled this time of year for big name surfers hunting for waves around the more aggressive beach or point breaks by the Punta Mita Surf Taxi. The warm water, ample supply of waves, and lack of ‘localism’ make this the perfect combo for a spectacular surf destination. The way that Punta Mita pokes out into the Pacific revealing North, South, and West facing exposed beaches, almost guarantees that whatever the ’Insider Scoop’ on the top 3 breaks of Punta Mita:

BAHÍA Bahia is quite often the place to go when there are no waves anywhere else, it’s known for its consistency of quality waves, but it’s not a spot for beginner surfers when the swell is firing! It is a rocky reef break, so on the inside you can get into some pretty sharp and shallow spots. Surf Bahia in the morning, during low to mid-tide, and you will find yourself on some very fast A-frame right handers. The best way to access Bahia is with the Punta Mita Surf Taxi, coming from the Sufi Ocean Club.

EL FARO If you’ve ever seen this spotlight up with a pumping summer swell, you may be reminded of that Indonesian photo on your fridge with long bending lines of perfect symmetry… it’s the best kept secret of Punta Mita! It needs some size to work well, but you won’t forget this spot and the long rides any time soon! It’s an intermediate advanced wave, reef, and rock, you don’t want to get caught over on the left side. Surf El Faro during mid-tide in the morning; the best access is with the Punta Mita Surf Taxi from the Sufi Ocean Club.

LA LANCHA This is the spot for beginners of all shapes and sizes, and it has become the go-to spot for most of the local surf schools, so it is getting pretty busy. omo apasionado de los deportes acuáticos, muchas veces me han preguntado - ¿Qué hace que Punta Mita sea tan espectacular?”- es una pregunta fácil de responder: la geografía. Punta Mita es una península que se adentra en el Océano Pacífico al extremo norte de la Bahía de Banderas, una maravilla geográfica en sí misma, ya que es una de las bahías más grandes de América. Con la cordillera de la Sierra Madre protegiendo su flanco sur, se combina para crear un panorama de surf de clase mundial. Las tres aguas que rodean Punta Mita ofrecen excelentes lugares para las marejadas del hemisferio norte y sur que provienen de tormentas generadas durante dos temporadas principales. Los sistemas de baja presión crean presión en la superficie del océano y, como una pelota de playa en una bañera, el oleaje irradia desde el centro y envía olas en todas direcciones. LA LANCHA.

Bahía es a menudo el lugar para ir cuando no hay olas en ningún otro lugar, este punto de surf es conocido por su consistencia de olas de calidad, ¡pero no es un lugar para surfistas principiantes cuando el oleaje está en marcha! Es un arrecife rocoso, por lo que en el interior puedes encontrar algunos lugares bastante afilados y poco profundos.

t is written –and I quote: “Travel will give you the opportunity to meet different and wonderful people from all over the globe– and connecting with new cultures is one of the most important benefits of traveling. New people give you a glimpse outside your hometown circle of friends, forcing you into new and refreshing perspectives on things in this world.” This is almost certainly true, but the fact remains we all have different reasons for getting away from it all. My own enthusiasm for world travel is often stirred by the thought of seeing exotic and native plants in botanical gardens, jungles, or holiday resorts. Others might prefer the thought of sandy beaches or a testing new golf course, but my attention is immediately drawn to the flora and fauna of the destination, even studying the verges of the runway as we touch down. It doesn’t really matter where you travel, or how far, there is always something new and interesting to see when studying plants, so when I had the opportunity to visit Mexico in 2021, I jumped at the chance. Ater all, few places in the world have such a diverse and fascinating array of vegetation. One of the most interesting aspects of being a Gardener is understanding where plants originally come from, how did they get there, and why are they happily thriving a long way from home. These questions came to mind on a recent visit to the wonderful Four Seasons Resort at Punta Mita and it was whilst jogging through the Gardens with Andy —my old friend— that I started to think, here lies paradise and it is right under our noses. You could be excused for not recognising it though, after all there is no sign, no guidebook, and the resort literature fails to indicate anything on the map. As I understand it, "Paradise" is a Garden set in utopia where good people live forever and share in joyful and productive activities. The key word for me here is Garden, others might be interested in the living forever part, (and why not?) –but for me life without plants would be too gloomy an existence to contemplate. So, you can imagine my joy when I first explored and travelled around the

resort: seeing such an exotic and magical collection of plants on display was a feast for an any avid horticulturist, but especially exciting for someone like me who had left a cold and wet England in deep and darkest February. When I left London, my exotic paradise was safely secured inside a heated Greenhouse, protected from the harsh winds and sub-zero temperatures, patiently awaiting May when it can breathe, bloom, and breed again. I should stop complaining, for as a resident of the British islands, I am blessed. We are a sea-faring nation, a useful trait when you are collecting plants from around the globe over the past 400 years, and, like our friends from Holland, the UK has acquired the widest and most extensive variety of plants of any nation. Mexico has given the world so many plants, most of which were collected by explorers and transported back to Europe in the 19th century to become prized possessions and trophies adorning stately homes, castles, and palaces. Dahlias, which are still used extensively in parks and gardens across the world, originate from Mesoamerica (middle America) and it’s not surprising that these are also the national flower of Mexico. When you look at the thousands of different varieties available today it is hard to imagine that these plants originated from a handful of plants that found their way from Mexico to the Madrid Botanic Gardens in 1790 and then to the rest of Europe shortly after. My Dahlias at Hampton Court are descendants from those plants first collected in the 18th century, a fact often overlooked when choosing colours or purchasing new plants from the nursery. You can be forgiven for thinking Punta Mita was a renowned botanical garden, such is the quality of the plants and the gardens in general. There are so many wonderful plants that I found it almost impossible to shortlist my favourites. My February visit would have limited the floral display on offer leading me to think a return visit at a different time of year might be worthwhile.

Es casi seguro que esto es cierto, pero el hecho es que todos tenemos diferentes razones para alejarnos de todo. Mi propio entusiasmo por viajar por el mundo a menudo se despierta con la idea de ver plantas exóticas y nativas en jardines botánicos, selvas o centros turísticos. Otros pueden preferir la idea de playas de arena blanca o probar un nuevo campo de golf, pero mi atención se dirige de inmediato a la flora y la fauna del destino, incluso estudiando los bordes de la pista cuando aterrizamos. There are many good Heliconia’s dotted around, which are often mistaken for the bird of paradise plant, Strelitzia. The bird like features of the flower certainly give you that idea, in fact it is sometimes called the False Bird of Paradise flower due to it fooling many a good gardener, including myself. I think this one is Heliconia psittacorum and you will find these dotted all around the Pacific as well as South America. There are nearly 200 different types of Heliconia, so forgive me if I’ve got this one wrong. They say that if you want to stay young and beautiful always grow this in your garden, which is a little unfair for us in northern Europe as this plant couldn’t survive in cooler regions. We shall remain old and ugly forever it seems.

Growing alongside –and, I have been assured this phrase is perfectly polite and respectful– was a "Gringo" that many Texans will recognise, also known as the Texan barometer bush or Texas sage. Gringo by name only though, it is a true Mexican native, as well as belonging to the southern United States. One thing is for certain: it is tough and, as a general rule, I tend to respect and praise any plant that does well in Texas. Creciendo al lado, y me han asegurado que esta frase es perfectamente cortés y respetuosa, estaba un "Gringo" que muchos tejanos reconocerán, también conocido como el arbusto barómetro de Texas o la salvia de Texas. My favourite on this visit though has to be the Jungle flames (Ixora coccinea) which are native to India and Sri Lanka. It has moved around over the years –I saw many good plants and even hedges made from it while I was in Florida. They also don’t mind a little salty sea spray, so it can be grown near the coast. Ixoras are also used in Hindu worship, favoured for their healing powers, particularly for problems with the skin. It would be amiss of me to ignore the Agaves or the wonderful cacti, did you know that Mexico has more cacti than any other country? 669 species of cacti live in Mexico, including over 500 varieties found nowhere else in the world. They are hardier than people think; we accidentally left a plant out one year and it made it through a British winter, looking slightly shrivelled but generally unscathed. Old friends can be plants too, and I was happy to see both on my travels last year. The tennis area is comprised of six hard courts and two synthetic turf courts, all lit for night play. Soft courts Turf is the original tennis surface. It is a fast surface, with an irregular surface and is least used. The ball is usually thrown at high speed, so agility is key for players. It is also recommended to use suitable footwear for adherence to the grass. Hard courts Hard surfaces are the most common in modern tennis. They are considered the most neutral for the confrontation of different tactics and styles, hard surfaces offer a slight advantage for players with powerful shots, as this type of surface is built with resistant plastic, which is softer than cement, making the game slower.

PICKLEBALL This sport –which has taken the racquet-playing world by storm in recent years– was born in 1965, and is derived from a mixture of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. Since 2014, it has become one of the fastestexpanding sports in countries around the world. It is almost always played in doubles, although it can also be played individually. Not much experience is necessary, which makes it more suitable for all types of people regardless of age or physical condition. Of course, the pace of the game is faster and requires a little more strategy. It is played with a small flat racket and the balls have holes, which helps it to have a fluidity in the air at a medium speed. In Punta Mita there are 4 pickleball courts available for Club Punta Mita Members and their guests.

PADEL Padel is a racket sport of Mexican origin that was invented by Mr. Enrique Corcuera at his home in Acapulco, Mexico in 1962. We have Corcuera to thank for the birth one of the most engaging racket sports, originally called Paddle Corcuera or Padel-Tennis, which we all know today as Padel. Punta Mita currently has 2 padel tennis courts. Some of the basic rules of this sport include: •

The racket must have a safety cord that is attached to the player's wrist and is always mandatory to avoid accidents.

To decide who “receives or serves” the players flip a coin.

ith the firm belief that education is the hallmark for our children to survive and thrive in a global economy, Fundación Dine Punta Mita and PEACE Punta de Mita announced in 4Q21 a joint initiative to change the way in which learning is delivered to all local area children. The charities teamed up to enact a three-phase, five-year Development Plan to construct a much-needed learning center in Emiliano Zapata, in conjunction with the Nayarit State Government and its Department of Education. The elements of the agreement provide for PEACE to fund, design, and construct classrooms and associated facilities, and for DINE to provide certain land and annual sustainment funding through social events held within the Punta Mita Resort. In parallel, PEACE has reached an agreement with the State in which the latter will provide select teachers, utilities, certain maintenance, and school supplies as construction increments are brought online. Phase I includes the building preparatory and technical high school classrooms and workshops on private land, as well as the campus-wide facilities infrastructure. Construction on major elements of the campus will begin later this year. Phase II encompasses the teardown and reconstruction of the existing secondary school and sports facilities on public land. Finally Phase III will most likely include an advanced learning center, administrative facilities, and teacher housing built on private land –again provided by DINE.

I think as in a business launch, visionaries convince investors that sizable returns can be realized at an acceptable level of risk. In our case the returns are children who are prepared for future education and/or employment. The initial capital funding for Phase I and for part of Phase II was attained by reaching a relatively small group of donors who have ‘the education of less fortunate children’ in their charitable giving portfolios, and who helped us mold this vision. The fundraising plan for a multimillion-dollar project of this magnitude and time duration always centered on a well-capitalized launch, followed by an ongoing capital campaign as steel and concrete rise from the ground. Attaining the willful cooperation of the State Government was facilitated by the many years of PEACE teaching English to 1,200 students in area public schools. Most importantly this project has gained the wide-scale support and involvement of our townspeople. PEACE Board Member, J.P. Stone, has given freely the time and talent of his company’s architectural team who will oversee the design, contractor bidding, and construction for all three phases. The strict control of funds will fall under the PEACE Finance Committee’s monthly review process. Carl Emberson, Punta Mita Head of Marketing and Operations says, “Fundación DINE Punta Mita is delighted to fulfill its educational charter in partnership with PEACE to again benefit the people who call Punta de Mita home. In fact, it builds on to the trust, confidence, and cooperation exhibited by both charities in 2020 and 2021 to counter COVID through the Humanitarian Relief Appeal’s food program and the Connect for Kids’ interconnect technology distributions. Like Punta Mita Hospital, the School Campus will become another community pillar of strength.”

El plan de recaudación de fondos para un proyecto multimillonario de esta magnitud y duración siempre se centró en un lanzamiento bien capitalizado, seguido de una campaña de capital en curso a medida que el acero y el cemento se levantan del suelo. Lograr la cooperación voluntaria del gobierno estatal fue facilitado gracias a la enseñanza del idioma inglés que PEACE ha realizado a lo largo de varios años ya a más de 1.200 estudiantes en las escuelas públicas de la zona. Lo más importante es que este proyecto se ha ganado el apoyo y la participación a gran escala de nuestros habitantes. El miembro de la junta de PEACE, Juan Pablo Stone, ha dado de manera gratuita el tiempo y el talento del equipo de arquitectos de su empresa, que supervisará el diseño, la licitación del contratista y la construcción de las tres fases.
