An exceptional Day
2004 During an evening of the summer 2011, while talking with friends about epic waves that warmed the autumn of 2004, on a spot located nearby where we stayed that evening , there’s this place called “Sa Tonnara“. It surely was an epic day, I personally didn’t have the chance to live it in first person, but I had the opportunity to revive that day in the films, that some happy and lucky fellow jealously kept in his secret drawer.

A good pal of mine, is one the persons, that was among one of the few lucky guys to assist. He decided that evening to allow me to go thru his film negatives. As I was going thru them in backlit, I couldn’t help myself to stop on a very specific one that drew my attention. It had the perfect profile for a Dream image. Two years later I decided to print the film , that was already feeling the time ruining the quality. Before it went completely unusable, I needed to make sure that it was safe! This is the result! It is an Oceanic wave, maybe the biggest and most powerful wave to be ever taken on picture in Sardinia. To this day, the main actors of this image are still unknown (besides all my thousands of tryout to know their identity). But this image is beautiful as it it is shown , I consider her the mistery wave, without a conqueror and with a burden of tales to tell and memories that she is being keeping in custody now for over a decade. They all come from a deep rooted, long surfing past, intense and shared with their friends, or probably it’s more appropriate to say that they have a lot of marine mileage under their feet. Travelling all over the world is the leitmotiv, constantly looking for new waves to surf, plunging completely within the surrounding culture, almost blending with all the different people they cross their path with. At a certain point of this travel for the search, each one of them with
different times and manner, decided to experience what it is to perform “inside” the marine life rather than “above” the element, that is covering our vast planet for ¾ . In some ways they were almost inside, but this turning point in their ocean living experience gave them the opportunity of not being separated by a surfboard. No floating device of any sort between them and the sea, that could affect the testing experience and the joy they could get from it.

Their body is now their own vehicle of happiness in the water. However, a further explanation is required, this is not a pulling aside the surf that they always practiced and always will. I believe instead, that this is a very important part of the big puzzle, maybe the most essential one, to truly understand and appreciate the importance of being part of mother ocean.

I believe that surfing with your own body, besides the simple and undeniable pleasure that the water pressure is pushing on you while descending the wall of a wave, is also important for a healthy development of your acquatic skills. It is the key to understand how the different currents are moving within and outside our body while we are immerged and riding a wave.
Enabling to feel the real forces of the waves we surf, being this while we travel or simply when we enjoy our home break. There are no fixed rules to have fun. If you keep this simple objective in your mind as target, you’ ll be having fun everytime you’re out there, whether it is on board, surfmat, handplane or just with your body.
Bodysurfing though, requires the minimum investment in order to get the maximum pleasure out of it, so a speedo and a pair of swimfins will fulfill the task on any summer day at your local beachbreack. If you are fine with attitude, wherever you are in the world, fun will be guaranteed from the very first wave you’ll ride.

Because it’s only your smile at the end of a pêrfect ride that really makes the difference and keeps hooked on this genuine practice that nowadays is called, bodysurfing.

Form where should we start when talking about Antoine Del Pero. We all know him and everybody knows he is. His surfing style is powerful and radical , modern and guided by rules. Born in the city of Marseille, he started surfing there until he decided to establish himself in the Basque Country where he was lucky enough to surf one of the most beautiful wave in Europe. He surfs with a winning spirit and
thanks to this he is pushed to travel to the most remote beaches around the world to compete with the best longboarders. He won the Salinas surf Festival this year and right after he flew to Peru to compete in the World Championship event. Winning in Salinas hasn’t for sure the same level of importance because there friendship and true spirit of longboarding are the thing to enjoy.
This the Reason why this event has been created for together with the occasion to give people to share, friends passion for ocean and logs. To be honest and objective, longboarding seen and practicted as a shortboard isn’t part of my «culture», however I can’t help myself from congratulating with Antoine for being the 2013 Longboarding World Champion.

“I think the main thing I took away from the event was the amazing enthusiasm everyone involved in the event showed. With surfing having become such a mainstream and somewhat corporate sport it was great to see so many people just stoked on going surfing. I had no idea that the Spanish surf community had such an affinity for single fin longboarding and it was refreshing to see yet more people bucking the status quo. In his never ending wandering around and looking for new developments for its crafts, Robin chooses different destinations, from California to Japan and from Australia to the Basque Country. Passing thru Italy, constantly adapting the lines of the shapes to different waves, but always staying unique in his style. Kegel goes where he wants and how he pleases, pointless to underline the worry about the distance travelled, he follows his ideas, he’s his own sponsor.

It has been a great feeling watching Matteo «growing», not that he wasn’t grown up before, of course, but as i observed him from a different persepective, one could easily say that it was a great pleasure seeing him surfing without any “performance anxiety”. However in a milieu where everyone is judging and stalking, even if they’ ll all say the opposite, I believe he gave us all a great demonstration of maturity… in a sense he really travelled without never getting to far from who he really is… What stroke me the most, is that he always kept is warming smile in the water… fun and enjoyment were and always will be his path to follow. He didn’t always give 100%, but who can honestly say that the 5th gear?

Watching him closely bonding friendship with fellow waterman with whom he just shared unique moments in the ocean with, gave me feelings I won’t easily forget. And i am sure that these moments will travel with him for a long time. Besides all the noise and confusion that the Salinas event produced, he surely was able to draw all he could from it in terms of experience in life. This will be an important part of his experience and his surf will reflect it. In times like these, I believe it is very important to have a clear perspective of what your goals in life are, for Matteo I guess two of them are enjoying the ocean and surfing. And yes, parties and enjoying life too of course, but always keeping himself spiritually and phyisically intact.

Being a very shy individual, I took the chance to meet different persons thru photography. This art gave me the opportunity to explore and to finally “get out” and feel, a sort of violence I had to impose to my personality in order to shorten the distances between me and the subject.

Relationship, although having to deal with distances at times, can last a lifetime if they are based on esteem and respect for each other’s work. Feeding your soul with “others” experience, to listen and share our different view, is a component I have only learned with time in film Photography, and that I cherish more and more. It really helped me in getting over my shy carachter, I believe it is a strong communication vehicle… at least it has and always will be, for me.

Today I stopped by the workshop and picked up my ILFORD DELTA 3200 that I left last week to be developped. As usual I couldn’t remember any of the pictures I took on it, so with the greatest of my surprise I discovered some pictures I shot randomly this summer.

Starting a journey to an unknown location means to confront yourself under every aspect of your life. Three suitcases, two boards and one love. Deep emotions are rooting in our ego, the journey is at the doorstep, a long travel is expecting us‌ Fuerteventura-Madrid-MiamiLima. We have already travel for 48 hours and we are not yet arrived at destination. Lima, the capital city,
glimpses of different landscapes are swiping thru our window bus as if it was a window shield of the world. The gap of time needed to pass from extreme wealth to favelas built on garbage is extremely thin. After a long travel thru the arid Peruvian desert, we arrived in Huanchaco, a small and sleepy fisherman’s village lived by few inhabitants.
Chicama
A blanket of fog is wrapping the few and small cubical houses. Waves are rolling free from North, endless lefts. We can’t see the horizon as the sky is melting together with the pacific ocean into one scaled grey, a shy winter sun is peeking thru for few seconds. The water is icy, but our will to taste what the ocean has to offer is whispering at us that we shall not loose any more time.

Being selected to compete in the World Championship from the national team is a great satisfaction, during the many session and heats we soon realize that 15 days have already passed by. Well, it’s time to get back on the road again! New Route ? Yes, the longest wave in the world is our new target!

Chicama is utopy for an unreal wave that you could ever dream of. It is like if she was born from a miracle, born from an inconceivable machinery. As I planned this trip to South-Africa, luck was overlooking on my shoulder. Fortune surely played a part in this journey, but planning ahead and timing my departure with one of the year’s biggest swell made it an almost safe bet.

“The Dance, if we want to call it so, starts at Boneyard and rolls on till Coins providing that you know iyou are on a switch fifth gear). A perfect style while accepting this challenge, means that your wave reading is focused. Humility, timing and a good pair of lungs are necessary to get back to the lineup safely�.
The changing tide kept me fantasizing for a while, I tried to imagine how such a remote place must have been when 6 decades ago. Without stumbling on socio-cultural considerations I tried to visualize what the first adventurers that came here thought when they first saw this beauty called Jeffreys Bay.

I remember as I was going thru an interview that David Pecchi wrote about Derek Hynd some times ago and thinking by myself how about if I had the chance to meet Derek one day. Sometimes opportunities become reality when you less expect them. Memories are coming back every time I look at those images of Derek and Mike Meyer that very day. The grin of happiness and stoke on Derek’s face while gliding flawlessly through every wave. His progression has been a crescendo for all the avid spectators seated on the balcony, and just as I did that afternoon they probably realized that gliding was the chiave di volta.

I remember taking pictures of Mike Meyer without really knowing who he was until a friend of mine told me who he was and being amazed about the fact that he was, besides the charging Supers with a Gun that he had hand shaped‌ a thing that you would and will never find in History books.

06 I kept on staring at his long run at the first daylights, for a moment I thought that while he was climbing up to the lip of the wave he couldn’t almost accomplish this act, nearly as if he wanted to pull out of the face of the wave. I remained speechles for few minutes as I realized that the simplicity of that climb implied a full speed descent and demonstration of control and style... Derek Hynd teaching me a lesson in finless.

the URBAN SOLID Art
two artists anonymised Urban solid is a project that wants to introduce tri-dimensional to the writing. The two artists, have a past as writers indeed, even if not in Italy. After a brief period of collaboration, they met again at the Brera’s Accademy in Milan and they immediately understood that their sculptural art even more verges on an urban language: as a result the two artists went back on the city walls. Sculptures, as human anatomic casts, guns, televisions and any other object created, hanging on the city walls,

have contemporary and allegoric meanings. The plaster casts are usually composed as a multiple on the walls, interacting directly with the observers, who can really this time have proof of the street art. The tri-dimensional strength, which burst into the surrounding through the walls, enables also the passer-by to perceive the light and shade effects, the shapes and the meanings, simple because obvious, of what the artists are creating: everything is a copy of the truth in a real dimension.
ADAM The last installation of Urbansolid, “Adam 2011”, portays the modern and ordinary man, who comes out the walls to be evidence of his own time and society. Represented with sunglasses and ironic smile on his face. Adam wears only the fig leaf as Genesis wanted. Unable to show himself naked, he moves “free” around his city, hiding his humanity. Adam is often placed beside a TV screen which sticks out of the wall and is made of the same material as Adam. The TV screen overwhelms Adam with lots of wishes and incentives through advertising and TV programs. The first time Adam was hung on the walls of Milan, an apple appears on the screen as the symbol of our miserable ancestor’s first desire: the original sin.

Another work hanging on several walls of Milan is the head eating a Tv remote control. This is the symbol of the coming up of the digital TV in Italy. Occasion in which many people had to buy a new TV or a decoder to watch their favorite programs, fitting in a situation wanted by the society.

The head that hold its nose The head that hold its nose is one of the first plastercast created by Urbansolid. It represents a man coming out ofthe floor or the wall, who faces our reality and the first impression he gets is the disdain for our drifting world.
“Lavoratore nella merda”
“The Immersion and The Surfacing are two important artworks for us. They represent the disdain of the human being when he comes in contact with the reality. Our world is infected: noise pollution, environmental pollution, air pollution and political contamination is drifting our society away. That’s what our Heads are talking about!”
“Italia-Teste”
Object, people and sculpture are existing and the citizen notices them, understands the details or the actual emotions and expressions when dealing with the human statues. It seems that as the city is oozing with object’s from its walls; there has always been a bi-dimensional attempt to evolve in becoming tridimensional, embellishing vacant sites, crumbling and decayed areas, the two artists have chosen on purpose the tridimensional one. The sculptures specifically crafted for the urban landscape are always made of plaster or cement; the basis are the ones of the classical bronze sculpture, used and shaped for the street art. Made of a millenary technique which with solid basis and hard-and-fast rules fuses with industrial building materials giving a modern and contemporary result.
