•Constellations and Ambiguity. We think of a constellation as a geometrical formation of lines connecting a group of particularly bright starts. In something as indefinite and ambiguous as a cluster of stars becoming oriented into a very particular and enduring image or state. We see in this a kind of accessible abstractness.

prototype plan •Almost none of the door are identical angle. Those being determined through the many interrelations existing in this space. Our concept is not capacity for one enormous project to take up on entire one space, but for various activities of varying scale to go on, in different kind of spaces, in different areas of the building. It seemed to make more sense to pursue flexibility in the relations between adjoining places, the size of the respective domains, and in the way different space are connected with each other. There is a plan, and no defined borders, for the spaces.

•Separation and Connection Architecture is to generate various senses of distances. Distance predicated the degrees of interactions amongst persons and objects; t hus, the profound spatial expressions of potential expanses were enriched by diverse qualities of gradations and intonations. One can be alienated and yet connected. Closed and yet separate. Associations are solely indicated by propinuqity.

CONCEPT

TEXTURE

This design attempts to establish a profound connection between individual consciousness and the building space. It is to manifest that the art of space share the same origins with other art forms.Internal demands and external experiences propel human beings to express themselves and represent the world with such arts as architecture, pain tings, music, etc.Space is not a oneway tool only to describe the static external world;it is also a statement of mutual penetration between physical objects and the world.

The Site is located to the north of Xi'an CBD,adjacent to a number of important civic buildings including Xi'an Library,Concert Hall,Central Book Store and Children's Palace. The urban grid poses an organizing texture on all civic affairs within the area.To seek a poetical relationship between buildings and locations has become the texture of the city. The introduction of diagonal linear elements increases the possibility of various narratives. These hidden "clues" radiate into the surroundings with tension and thus form dramatic links among the buildings and urban spaces.

Cutting creates horizontal fissions: The skewed and penetrating apertures form the continuous and complex voids,as well as functional cavities thus generated.Urban and architectural space produce dynamic transitions in a collage manner both at levels above and under ground. The big rift becomes the central pubilc space. The huge spacetruss corridor divides the building into three parts-a museum of contemporary arts,a city planning exhibition hall, and auxiliary functions.

The public spaces crisscross in midair. The visiting circulation is organized into two routes. The main circulation route of the museum of contemporary arts and city planning exhibition hall is organized along the central circulation concourse, which is clear and continuous. The bridges inserted in the space bring about a different and poetic experience for visitors.Horizontal transitions and vertical cuttings create a montage-type visual depth. All unexpected encounters and mutual observations of players on different levels become the performances acted on this stage. 

CAVITY The cavities adopt a mega-tube structure and doublelayer floor slabs with beamless honeycomb floor plates in the middle. This is to realize voluminous spaces with large spans. The structural cavity penetrates the whole building.Under the Venturi ef fect, air flows upward through the cavity, thus realizing natural ventilation in the space. The exhibition spaces connect with each other inside the cavity and transform continuously.Natural lighting is introduced from different angles, and provides a peaceful and yet dramatic backdrop for the display of contemporary arts.

XINING HISTORY MUSEUM

This project is located on a gentle site by the water.Pond, sand beach and marsh consititute the only locus information. I hope to reconstruct the "landscape" by this project. The Cubes become the only abstract motif element;through such simple operations as superimposition, displacement,a nd rotation, they produce a "possibility of complexity" .Each cube is designed as a rigid structure and assigned serial property,so that precise positioning can be neatly conducted in a three-dimensional space.Through constant replication and superimposition, the motif cubes produce a series of interlocking exhibition spaces. The design of the scheme is the result of a single-dimensional operation of sequencings. The cubes are spatial as well as structural elements. This dramatic exchange of the spatial and structural roles in architecture creates a unique feel for one to experience and perceive the space and structure.

Concept diagram of self--rotation

Rolations produce complexities--spaces generalerate uncertainty, volumes become less easy to describe, and boundaries are blurred.

Diagrammatic operation--uncertain narratives When the layout of the motif elements cannot be defined in a conventional way,it is deemed irregular. Traditional rules of design and order are completely irrelevant here. I try to apply a new design method--diagrammatic operation for a renewed elucidation.Diagrammatic operation implies that the design can display the traces of diagrammatic operation. It is not only explanatory, but also generative. That means it not only sheds light on the relation between the work and its internality, but also opens up the narrative possibilities of the work, turning it into a more autonomous operation. The sequence of diagrammatic operation implicates two types of states--time and movement. For reasons of accuracy and ease of control,I divide the operation into the following steps.

The sequence of diagrammatic operation implicates two types of states--time and movement. For reasons of accuracy and ease of control,I divide the operation into the following steps.

1 Set the trajectory Create or design a trajectory of movement which is linked to the geometric center of all the cubes. In other words, the scheme can be construed as the result of a standard cube moving along the trajectory within a fixed time span. One example is Duchamp's attempt to express the sense of movement in a disassembling manner in his "Nude Descending a Staircase No.2" .The final image is the outcome of superimposing one element's movements in space and time.Different trajectory may lead to different narratives.

NUDE DESCENDING A STAIR CASE NO.2,Marcel Duchamp In NUDE DESCENDING A STAIR CASE NO.2,Marcel Duchamp explored a sense of movement by means of disassembly

2 Disentangle the Movement A cube's movement on the trajectory can be described with two vectorial states of movement and rotation.Analysis shows that motions in these two vectorial dimensions produce different results.Like movement analysis is physics,I break up a movement into coplanar shift (movement of the cube center along the trajectory) and rotation (rotation of the cube round its center) .Overlapping these movements, overall characters of the building can be controlled:conditions like relation to the site, general outline, volumes, spaces etc.Rotations produce complexities--spaces generate uncertainty, volumes become less easy to describe, and bounfaries are blurred. With the help of computer, shifts and rotations can be accurately set and quantitatively analyzed.

 67

When piling up a number of resultant movements, the complex spatial configuration erupts the original order of Euclidean geometr y.Suc h oblivious spaces in- and outside the building are unable to be presented with conventional architectural perspectives;it is more like abstract art.
