Edition 1 July 2022
DG David
DG David with his children Lily & Liam McPherson and parents George & Val McPherson
Hello all and welcome to the new Rotary year where you get to Imagine what your Rotary can be. But more than that, the invitation from RI President Jennifer Jones is to not only IMAGINE it, but to MAKE IT HAPPEN! July is ‘New Leadership’ month and as such I welcome all new Presidents and their respective board members to their new positions. Some of you may have been in these positions before however I urge you all to don’t just do the same things you have always done, but to think differently, think outside the box, Adapt what you do and the way you do it to better suit the changing world we live in and to make it more relevant to your community. Everything we do has to be relevant to people within our communities. It needs to be valued by our communities. If people see this then they will see that Rotary is an organisation that will want to be part of. (continues on page 4)
“It is the promise of hands-on service that we offer”
Vale Anne Reid Distinguished Rotarian and District Governor 2021-22 Anne Reid joined Rotary in 2008 as a member of the Rotary Club of Alexandra. She was Club President 2013 -2014 and was 2017 Director the Art Show, always a successful event. In District 9790 Anne was Assistant Governor for Group 4 from 2015 – 2018. She enjoyed regularly visiting clubs and was helpful to the Presidents and boards during those years, especially the newer Kinglake Ranges club. Anne served as District Secretary for PDG Malcolm Kerr 2018 – Anne at the District Conference Dinner with 2019 before being nominated as DGN to serve Kathy Mills Seymour Past President. from July 2021. She received a Paul Harris Fellow recognition in June 2015 and on 10th June 2022 was given a PHF recognition with three rubies for her service to District 9790. Anne was determined to proceed with her year as District Governor and focused immediately on her Conference team selected to provide a new model. ‘Embracing Change’ was her theme for the conference, and she endeavoured to have speakers and a structure that reflected new ways of planning. Coming from a smaller club Anne decided to invite other nearby clubs to organise specific elements of the conference e. g. the Saturday Dinner Dance and the Rotary Showcase. Having been involved with the recovery work in the Marysville area after the 2009 fires she was really keen to showcase the rebuilt town to the District. After the 2020 bushfires Anne was quick to become involved in hands on support for the Corryong area and promoted many resourceful ways to support communities impacted in this disaster. Despite her limited availability to meet face to face either due to COVID restrictions or her treatments, Anne visited clubs regularly via ZOOM and encouraged the clubs to develop their hybrid meeting capabilities by purchasing District subsidised equipment. She loved catching up with friends and Rotarians for coffee or a long lunch. Anne’s determination to make the most of her year as District Governor both for our Clubs and her passion for Rotary will be remembered. Her wit and ready laugh continued throughout her illness and were a testament to her strength and resolve, and will be missed by her friends and colleagues alike. A memorial for DG Anne Reid will be held later in the year. Elizabeth McCormick District Secretary 2021-22

Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta Celebrates Fifty Years The Rotary Club of Appin Park was chartered on 22nd June 1972. So, fifty years later, the Club has just celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary. A gala dinner has been held at the Gateway Hotel Wangaratta with over sixty past, present, Club and District members in attendance, welcomed by the current President, Beverley Maher, and the Mayor of the Rural City of Wangaratta. In addition there were past exchange students and National Science Summer School attendees (in person or by video), and our first Rotary Foundation (now Ambassadorial) Scholar, Professor Margaret Hamilton. Professor Margaret Hamilton, the first guest speaker, outlined how, having already been a Rotary exchange student, she was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Appin Park to study at Michigan University in the USA under Rotary Foundation. "This Rotary Club," Margaret said, "effectively launched my career." Margaret became Professor Drug and Alcohol at the University of Melbourne. By video link, Justin Nash, came in from Perth to speak about how his experience as a National Youth Science Summer School participant, and the invitation he received to attend the Nobel Prize giving in Stockholm, inspired his scientific career. He is now engaged in the decarbonising of the energy industry. Lachlan Carboon, another NYSS student, who was at the celebration in person, also enthused about his high tech scientific work, inspired by his attendance at this stimulating Rotary program. A number of former exchange students, present at the event, spoke about their current careers. We were also connected by video link to Denmark where Teresa Petersen enthused about her Rotary student exchange experience with the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta.

Various current and former members who have served as President of the Club, gave a point by point history of the major achievements and events in the Club's history. Original Charter member, Wally Patjens, was invited to cut the Fiftieth Anniversary cake. The whole evening was a very social and uplifting experience for all who attended.

Mental Health First Aid For over five years now Moreland Rotary has focused on Mental Health in our Community. For those at the March Marysville conference, you will recall Rotarian Lee Garwood summarising our Mental Health activities. In the November District newsletter, we shared the remarkable reach and success of our inaugural Lift the Lid walk for our District. Our second walk will be Sunday 9 October 2022 (save the date)! In the February District newsletter, we shared the Reflect Respect Celebrate community breakfast featuring MHFA co-founder Betty Kitchener and Dr Claire Kelly, of Mental Health First Aid Australia.
Whilst there was a large showing of Moreland members and their local community, we also had Rotary representation from Diamond Creek, Eltham, Pascoe Vale, Strathmore and the RYLA Supporter team.
Mental health first aid (MHFA) is a training program that teaches members of the public how to help a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. MHFA courses can provide members of the community with: Skills in how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems Knowledge of the possible risk factors for these mental health problems Skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behaviour, panic attack, stress reaction to trauma, overdose or threatening psychotic behaviour.
We arranged for the program to be delivered by Aleksei Bondarenko – Edwards, of Bond and Wild Co. Moreland Rotary purchased textbooks, and branded notebooks, pens and lanyards for all participants. The initial two day course hosted at Pascoe Vale RSL was on Sundays 27 March and 10 April. With demand, a second hosted at Federazione Lucana was on Saturdays 30 April and 7 May 2022. Thanks extended Moreland Rotary for funding 30 of the 40 participants in this essential program and to former Assistant Governor Emma Davis for coordinating. PP Emma Davis Moreland Rotary
You have all heard former DG Anne speak of this program. Moreland Rotary are proud People of Action, and so we made a call to action for our local community and the southern end of District; Clusters one, two and three to participate.
