Moreland Council Vaccination Programme

We welcomed Kim Tully from Moreland City Council at a recent club meeting Kim spoke of her work as part of a team of Community Liaison Officers (CLOs) at Moreland who are responsible for arranging COVID and influenza vaccinations for the elderly. She organises in house vaccinations and transport for booster shots. For instance she mentioned that on the day prior to our meeting she helped a 90 year old get her fourth shot via Western Health, the principal deliverer of vaccinations in the area. The community liaison program is funded by the Victorian Government and delivered by local government. The program was rolled out very quickly starting in April 2022 an finished at the end of June but the councils are planning to meet with DHS to see about extending it. Interpreters are made available for non English speakers and promotion is undertaken among Italian and Greek speakers as well as those who speak Arabic and Turkish, usually via their clubs and organsations.

13,000 people in Moreland have had their third dose so far, 87% have had a second with 77% having had two or more. Coburg, with a population of 38,000, has seen 65% with their third dose. Pop up vaccination clinics are run in Moreland and free food and coffee is offered as an encouragement to get vaccinated. Free flu vaccinations is considered a positive component and are offered simultaneously with COVID vaccinations. Demonstration of how to use RATs are also available. Kim was previously an Executive Assistant to one of the council’s directors but was brought across to this program on which she works one day a week. Her background is in aged care The council has a lot of RATs available so we should let the community know about these. Kim's contact details are 0438 260 572

The CLOs reach out directly to the community and also via other council departments to get the vaccination message out.

Fawkner Residents Association (FRA) In addition to Kim Tully from Moreland Council, we were fortunate to have Joe Perri as a guest who give us an update on the FRA, which he chairs. Joe backgrounded his work at the FRA by stating upfront that primary objective of the association is to articulate local community issues. It now has 1,400 members and a very active Facebook page. Fawkner is an area expecting significant population growth with resultant pressures for development, which in turn provokes a need for adequate public consultation. Joe's interest in the FRA started with a proposed townhouse development near his home, where he was able to apply his background gained from his firm Joe Perri & Associates, which provides public relations, marketing & corporate communication strategies and processes. One of key issues that the FRA took up successfully was the future of land in McBryde Street, Fawkner which was on the Merri Creek and which was owned by VicRoads. Plans to sell off the land for development would have compromised the environmental values of the Merri Creek so the FRA worked with the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) and Friends of Merri Creek (FOMC) to successfully campaign against the sale. Local MP Peter Khalil also provided valuable support. Trevor also introduced Joe as an active member of the Merri Paddle project which he coleads in his capacity as a community leader of ACF with Dr Peter Ewer from Friends of Merri Creek. Merri Paddle has an ambitious objective of restoring conditions of the Merri Creek and surrounds that will allow reintroduction of the platypus.

Our Guest Speakers Moreland Rotary invites speakers to our club both from our local community and further afield. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in. However the opinions expressed by our speakers do not necessarily reflect any official viewpoint of Moreland Rotary nor those of individual club members. Irrespective of this we always offer a warm Rotary welcome to all of our speakers.
