3THE MORELANDER
An important part of the Rotary calendar is the visit of our District Governor who has the immense task of visiting over 60 clubs across our Rotary district which extends from the NSW southern Riverina to the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
Diversity will promote creativity in thoughts and ideas which will lead to a greater range of programs and wider reach in our community while also making our members feel engaged. It is important to care for fellow members including all in the decision making within the club, ensure equity where every member can achieve their passion for being a Rotarian and include people from Diverse groups so that they can Integrate into your club, into your community, and into your hearts.
Our current District Governor is David McPherson from Deniliquin who worked for many years as Chief Hospital Scientist at the Deniliquin Hospital.
David has also been paraplegic since the age of 8 after a car accident and has been in a wheelchair ever since. It was a privilege to welcome him to our club and we spent a pleasant hour over breakfast discussing key Rotary themes for the year and getting to know each other.
Rotary International President Jennifer Jones
Clubs should mirror the diversity in our community “welcoming and including people of all backgrounds, experiences regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, colour, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity”
The key themes for 2022 23 which are passionately embraced by our International President, Jennifer Jones, the first ever woman in the role, relate to Rotary serving its community, empowering women and setting a target on 30% women membership by the end of the Rotary year plus looking at a range of club models to achieve this. Clubs need to be welcoming to members and make full use of the passions of members to help them feel engaged.
Innovative and flexible clubs can be relevant reflecting community diversity, needs & expectations, can be innovative & transformative responsive to change(s) within the community, can be contemporary, modern, flexible, appealing but most importantly caring.

Wheelchairs for Kids (wheelchairsforkids.org) is not unfamiliar to our club as our former member Helen Bailey raised considerable funds for this wonderful initiative and Moreland Rotarian Rosemary Freeman visited the workshop in Perth' We will be delighted to reconnect. Donations can be made to website https://donations.rawcs.com.au/4 2022 23
President Elect Jo, thanked David for his visit saying how positive our meeting had been.
David concluded by talking about his District Governor’s partner’s project which is being promoted by his twin children, Lily and Liam (pictured below), who are both university students in Canberra. The project for 2022 23 in Wheelchairs for Kids, a project started in Western Australia to build and export wheelchairs to children in countries where they lack the means to obtain them.

We should celebrate the past BUT look to the future, try new things, start a new club to attract a different demographic and give everyone the opportunity to achieve their passion.

RIMERN - Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network
A small group of Moreland Rotarians visited an exciting Rotary initiative almost right on our doorstep, RIMERN which is short for Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network It is based in a warehouse in East Brunswick and our most enthusiastic host and guide for the visit was Prahran Rotarian Susie Cole RIMERN is a multi club Rotary project that means 'Residential Recycling' and collects household goods to donate to people in need... it’s a simple idea that’s worked for 27 years in eastern and western Melbourne and now it’s inner Melbourne’s turn!
People coming out of homelessness, domestic violence, refugee displacement, jail, loss of homes due to disaster or crisis. These people are clients of member welfare agencies who are helping them settle into homes, and RIMERN helps to fit them out. What goods are needed & why? Clients are being helped into mostly small social housing or private rentals so... SMALL... sofas (<2.1m wide), arm chairs (no recliners); small modern dining settings with 2,4,6 chairs; side & coffee tables, low line TV units, single, double & QS bed bases & SPOTLESS inner spring mattresses; new or very good quality linen & towels, doonas & pillows: sets of crockery(mugs not cups & saucers), water glasses (no stemmed glasses), pots & pans, kitchenware, ironing boards, electrical appliances & white goods if clean, undamaged & working; flat screen TVs with remotes. What won't be taken? Corner units, king sized anything, sofa beds, TV units, old style desks, buffets or anything with glass doors, shelves or tops, outdoor furniture or BBQs, baby gear, clothes, computers, stereos, kitchen gadgets that noone uses, wardrobes, dressing tables, “granny stuff" (sorry... lots of people managing deceased estates or elderly parents going into aged care have lovely furniture, ie. comfortable & at one time expensive, but younger clients going into largely social housing just don't want patterned very stuffed couches & 'brown' furniture)
A website is under construction, so in the meantime, please email pics of what you'd like to donate to donatedgoods@rimern.org.au, with collection address (if inner Melbourne), your contact phone number & a 'must be gone by' date.

Moreland Rotary invites speakers to our club both from our local community and further afield. They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in. However the opinions expressed by our speakers do not necessarily reflect any official viewpoint of Moreland Rotary nor those of individual club members. Irrespective of this we always offer a warm Rotary welcome to all of our speakers.
