BATES SADDLES NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS Regional Premier League results CELEBRATING THE VERY BEST OF OUR SPORT
EDITORIAL
FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO ISSUE FORTY EIGHT OF THE DRESSAGE NZ BULLETIN
I
t is always interesting to read how other sports consider a changing demographic and environment to keep their sport sustainable.
Netball New Zealand set out their future direction in February this year in the Poipoia Strategy Plan and inclusivity was one of the core values outlined. It went on to say that part of the plan details “embracing all of New Zealand’s diversity within fun, safe and welcoming environments. Being local, affordable, and accessible”. Whatever things we can change to ensure that it is fit for purpose for everyone is really important and some of things are little minor tweaks that make it way more accessible or easy for people to participate.

So, it’s hats off to those areas who are running such successful local events and series outside of the Premier League calendar. These groups are our game changers giving new participants the encouragement and opportunity to gain confidence and smash new goals. It’s at this level that riders will decide if they want to stay in our sport. Local events play a critical role in our sustainability. This is where new members are captured. Local, affordable, and accessible. It’s not to take anything away from the groups running such great Premier League events – but realistically – few riders have their first competition at this level. 2020 has been a year that no-one could predict. Thank you all for being so adaptable and for continuing to be involved when the odds seemed against us. The year has taught us much. The camaraderie and support of each other at the national championships appeared to be outstanding and remarked upon by many. A sense that everyone was grateful for the opportunity denied us earlier in the year. So, as we sign off this final issue for 2020, the Bulletin team wishes everyone end of year goodwill as 2021 comes our way.

THE BATES SADDLES NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 Stories by Jess Roberts Photos by Libby Law Photography
After the sudden postponement of the March Nationals due to Covid 19, Dressage NZ worked hard with the continued committment from sponsors, officials and volunteers to pull off this outstanding event. Team New Zealand pulled off a major win defeating Covid 19 and thankfully here is the comprehensive wrap up of the action and smiles from four days of competition at the Taupo National Equestrian Centre. A MESSAGE FROM THE EVENT SPONSOR DAVID JONES-PARRY A partnership that now spans twenty-two years is a testament to the close working relationship between the naming sponsors, Bates Saddles, their NZ distributor Weatherbeeta, David Jones- Parry and Dressage NZ
F
irstly I would have to congratulate the team behind running this year’s Championships. The Event had a very friendly atmosphere throughout. I received no negative comments from any riders or spectators, either during the event or since – only positivity and praise. It never ceases to amaze me what we have learned from this global Pandemic. I believe splitting the levels was such a positive move – it relieved so much pressure on stewards, administration, grounds people and the stabling. I would hope that this would be considered seriously for next year’s Championships. As far as timing of the Event – this worked perfectly. It is so hard on all parties concerned to go from one large show (Land Rover Horse of the Year) to another, within a very short space of time. I think that the timing also accounts for the reduced pressure and hence better atmosphere at this show. The National Equestrian Centre looked magnificent and the Manager, Elliot was beyond helpful. It was a fantastic event – I walked away thinking this show is on the right track – there is a great base to build on.
The new Artiste saddle on show during the event created a huge amount of interest. The Bates stand in the marquee was a hive of activity as David explained the new features of this saddle. Many riders who tried it agreed it was a saddle like no other they had ridden in giving a them a superbly close and secure feeling. Photo: Libby Law Photography

GALLOWAY’S STAR KEEPS RISING “It’s a bit surreal and it’s taking time to sink in, but I’m so happy with how they went. I just always want to make sure I do the best I possibly can, and I want to try to do better every single time. I never take it for granted.” Marlborough’s Melissa Galloway reflects on breaking previous personal best scores and becoming Bates National Grand Prix Champion and Burkner Medal winner with Windermere J'Obéi W. 8 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021

“
I’m very, very excited and really happy with both my horses,” says Melissa, speaking from her Marlborough base after a long trek back from Nationals, including a well-timed ferry crossing on the Interislander (the day before Melissa crossed Cook Strait with her team, the ferry service experienced delays due to 6-metre swells).
(69.065). Whilst her two geldings are both chestnut, and both by Johnson, they are very different. “Johnny [Johanson] is really quirky with a lot of personality and you can tell how he’s feeling all the time,” explains Melissa. “Joey [J'Obéi ] is the ultimate pleaser, he’s like a labrador! He wants to do the right thing and is cuddly and affectionate.”
In the Superior Rubber Surfaces Super 5 Grand Prix, Melissa took the quinella in a strong field of twelve starters. She won the class with Windermere J'Obéi W on a personal best score of 72.739, landing second aboard Windermere Johanson W
Melissa is enjoying the consistency that is coming with her second season in Grand Prix. “J'Obéi was so consistent for the whole show, and we’re just getting a lot more consolidated now. This second season has really shown that for us.”

DID SHE THINK THE GRAND PRIX WAS ANOTHER PERSONAL BEST TEST WHEN SHE FINISHED RIDING IT? “I definitely thought it was the best one - I’d had another personal best when I was up at Bay of Plenty Champs and it was the same feeling. But there I had had one little mistake in my test, so I knew I could do better. And in this one I didn’t make any mistakes so I thought ‘I hope this is better’, because it felt like it was.” With increased consistency and the feeling that both her horses are happy and confident in their work, Melissa believes there is still room for improvement. “They’ve got a really good attitude and keep wanting to work,” she says. “They get stronger over time and get more in tune and I think I’m riding better every season. In each test I am learning more so… nothing is ever perfect!”

She’s also full of praise for the Taupo event: “I just loved it and loved the surface. The new warm-up surface is amazing, the horses love it and everyone was raving about it! It was a really nice show - dressage riders have real highs and lows and everyone is so supportive in the dressage community. I think now more than ever everybody is just so happy and encouraging. We come to watch our friends, and we’re there for each other and support each other when things don’t go so well. It’s great to be a part of that.” Post-Nationals, for Melissa it’s back to the busy life of being a full-time

dressage rider. She has six horses in work, and manages them herself, without a groom. This doesn’t leave much time for teaching but she does do some when time allows. Her own learning takes place post-Covid style: via Zoom online with Vanessa Way. “It actually works really well! I’ve had quite a few lessons this way now and it’s just as helpful and encouraging [as it is in person].” She has several exciting youngsters coming up through the ranks, including her homebred ‘Elmo’, now a 6-yr-old. “He’s really cool. He’s by Negro out of a Wolkentanz II mare that Janelle Sangster-Ward bred. It’s taken me a while to bring him out to a show because he was a little bit tricky, but he just did his first couple of shows at Advanced Medium scoring up to 70% and he won all his classes. He’s been amazing and I think he’s very exciting for the future. He’s still very green competition-wise but I really love him. I’m very lucky to have another one that is that special, I think.” Winning the National Grand Prix title was the icing on the cake after also recently being awarded the MoreFM Marlborough Sportswoman of the Year. “I’d actually been nominated about seven or eight times before,” says Melissa, “because Marlborough Dressage is quite strong and we always try to have someone in these awards just to get our sport out there. But dressage doesn’t often win the overall award and usually you have to be doing international things to

“I definitely do get nervous, but I’m well aware of how that affects my riding - it doesn’t help it at all! So I’ve really had to learn to control my nerves and it’s just such a mental thing. I’m definitely getting better at it, but I do have to stay really calm with my riding. I’ve always found that the more nervous I am and the more anxious I am for particular movements that I find slightly harder, the worse I usually do with them! So I always try not to aim for winning, just going out to do better than I did last time. The more pressure you put on yourself to win, the worse it goes I think! Experience and time helps.”
win, so it was great to have had an awesome season and be recognised like that.” While Covid has temporarily halted any plans of international competition, Melissa says as soon as the borders open she’ll be first in line for a ticket to Europe. “We are just re evaluating our plans now that we are aware there will be no qualifying events for the Olympics in Oceania. It is looking quite likely we will have to make a trip to Europe if we want to keep the Olympic dream alive!” Melissa would like to thank her sponsors: Dunstan Horsefeeds, Syncroflex, Moores Riding Wear, Saddle 4 You, The Equine Cobbler, Big Reds Stable Snacks and Mark Watson Photography. fter taking the 4-yr-old Young Dressage Horse title, Rochelle Speirs (Palmerston North) and the stunning 4-yr-old Feuer Tanz (HP Fresco x Gymnastic Star) went on to take out the Preliminary Championship with a series of mid70s scores, finishing with a win in the 1C on 76.607% and their name on the Aztec Trophy. This horse just oozes quality and performance so what a thrill for Rochelle’s top supporter, her Mum Linda Budden who is the primary owner, with good friend and mentor Julie Brougham also having a share. Hot on their heels for Reserve was Sophie de Clifford (Waikato) and the quality Negro mare Riverrock Nigella.
North rider plans to train Feuer Tanz (known at home as Jett) right up the levels, having previously trained Vollrath Latimer up to L8. “I’m hoping Jett will be the one to take me

She was also full of praise for the Taupo venue: “I thought it was exceptional. The surface outside, and the indoor surface was just incredible to work on - you just felt good because the horses worked in so well. It was brilliant.” Palmerston North veterinarian Susan Tomlin and Dance Hit SW (were the Novice Champions (following on from their great win in the 5-yr-old Young Dressage Horse with a score of 85.2) topping the scoreboard in all three of their tests with 70+ scores, their best being 73.088 in the 2B. In addition to the Killala Trophy they also earned the NZ Hanoverian Society Award for Best Performed Hanoverian (Prelim -

Elementary). Reserve went to Wendi Williamson (Waimauku) and her super Dancier gelding Ducati MH. Dance Hit SW (Danciano x Sandro Hit) has been achieving some brilliant scores with Susan this season, recording 84.3 and 81.9 in his freestyle tests at Wellington and Central Districts Champs respectively. This is an appropriate championship for the pair to win as Susan has been riding in Bates Saddles for over two decades and has officially been sponsored by Bates for the last couple of years. “David Jones-Parry has always looked after me very well,” says Susan. “The saddles work really well for me and I like that you can change them to
fit any horse. I ride in one of the Innovas and it suits me really well.” The plan is to keep training ‘Duncan’ up the levels, assisted by co-owner and coach Andrea Raves. “Absolutely! We’re not planning to sell him any time soon - we’re looking forward to the journey ahead.” Elementary honours went to the classy Just A Spark RE (GT Jake x Quattro B). He was expertly piloted to the top spot in both test rounds by Penny Castle (Hawkes Bay) with 68.125 and 68.659 scores and taking home the Tuna Lodge Trophy for 2020. Clevedon rider Angela Lloyd and the elegant Delta Duet (Delta Lets Dance) gave them a close run for their money to take Reserve Champion.

Sarita Kennedy and FIS Lacoste. It was wonderful to see so many entrants and such a variety of types and breeds performing well.. The Livamol Elementary Championship rug was proudly worn by Auckland rider Amy Arnott and Rata Mill Jefferson, although it was a tussle for the top with just fractions of a percent separating her from Georgia Watson (Rotorua) aboard RM Astek Glamorous in the final two tests, the latter taking Reserve spot (in the 3C, Amy finished on 67.317 with Georgia second on 66.768).
Otaki’s Holly Wynyard and the lovely 5-yr-old Astek Treasure (Kinnordy Gym Bello) were decisive winners of the Dunstan Horse Feeds Preliminary championship, improving on their third place in the Eye-Opener test to nail two wins in the deciding 1A and 1C tests with 70.2 and 71.6 respectively. Stacy Kerrison (Hunua) and her part-Gypsy Cob, Bellecara Beaumont, took the Reserve sash from a solid field. Track rider Holly has owned Astek Treasure for just eighteen months. “He was the cheapest warmblood I could find and I wasn’t allowed to buy a dressage horse - he’s worked out to be exactly what I was looking for. Beginners luck!” she smiles. Is riding trackwork the polar opposite of riding dressage? “Yes, but to be honest there are a lot of similarities too and having lessons has helped with the race horses a lot. It’s all the same fundamentals I guess, just a lot faster! When I’m riding a gallop or riding pace work I think all the same things: rhythm, balance, collection, extension,” Holly explains. “The hardest part in switching from racehorses to dressage is slowing down, I feel like I’m at snail speed when I’m in the arena and going to get marked down for not enough impulsion!”
Holly loved her Nationals experience. “I’ve never been to a horse event where everyone was so genuinely supportive and helpful to everyone, I’m a real newbie and everyone was so welcoming. It really was an awesome experience.” Over in the Marsh Equine and Livestock Novice Emily Green (Rotorua) and her 9-yr-old mare Astek Gwhinnie headed the twenty plus field with a 69.107 win in Round One, taking the championship by just half a point ahead of Reserve

Amy bought Rata Mill Jefferson six years ago when she decided to get back into riding after giving up as a teenager. They did a season of Show Hunter together after which Amy says she realised their flatwork could do with polishing up, so began taking dressage lessons - then she was hooked! This win is their biggest to date, and Amy credits her coach Kylie Baker with making a huge difference to her training. The twelve year old ‘Geoff’ is a Clydesdale x Anglo Arab (bred by Michael Carter at Rata Mill Stud in Raglan) and Amy says he is a pleasure to do everything with. “He is a real professional. He tries his absolute heart out for me, he knows when we are at a show and turns on the razzle dazzle! He is my best mate and I’m privileged to own him.”
Amy Arnott and Rata Mill Jefferson
Ottilie Upshall (Rotorua) and her Donnerubin gelding Mistadobalina took home the title for the Medium Championship with two decisive wins in the qualifying tests and great scores of 72.5 and 72.21. Hunterville’s Vaughn Cooper and River Jim (Riverside) went into Reserve. Mistadobalina “is very sweet, but a bit of a doofus!” says Ottilie. “He is very laid-back and uncomplicated in the competition atmosphere.” This was their first championship title at a Nationals show. “It’s very special. It was my first time back at Nationals after several years and I loved being there, soaking up the great atmosphere and seeing the talent we have in NZ.” In the Advanced Medium it was an extremely close race to the finish, with Casey Burton (Awanui) and Fanfare MH’s (Furstenball, owned by Judith Matthews) consistent performances taking the championship and Kentucky Trophy. Clevedon rider Haydee WellsParmenter rode into Reserve place with Foxleigh Mr Darcy.

Casey Burton and Fanfare MH
Casey and Fanfare MH were last year’s Elementary champions so it was a sweet triumph to step up and repeat their success (and perhaps made the 10-hour truck trip home a little more bearable!). The combination train with Vanessa Way, whom Casey says is a great teacher. “I love her, she’s been so helpful for me with my riding. Very clever lady.” Advanced Champions and winners of the Hobson Trophy were 19-year-old Morgan Beere (Waikato) and Redwood Furst Affair, with Penny Castle and Lord Alexis (Lingh II) going into Reserve. Imported to NZ as an unbroken 2-year-old from Queensland’s Redwood Stud (AU), Redwood Furst Affair (Furstenball) has been trained single-handedly by Morgan, including breaking in. “Bella has the best work ethic, and to be honest just knows how to do the movements,” says Morgan. “It’s like she is programmed to do the job! Our biggest challenge is that she was a long, lanky, weak horse that was and still is - going to take time.”

THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS: MEDIUM AND ADVANCED MEDIUM The Fiber Fresh Medium title went to Kathryn Corry (Piopio) and the Hanoverian Ganache MH (Gymnastik Star), who she describes as “a super mare with a bold and enthusiastic approach to life!” She sealed her claim on the championship with a win in each of the qualifying rounds (70.69 and 70.081). Reserve went to 22-year-old Far North rider Reece Downham aboard Ruby Tuesday T, riding for Matthews Hanoverians.

Event rider Greer Caddigan (Cambridge) pocketed the Elite Frozen Foals Advanced Medium with the experienced Ricker Ridge Pico Boo, two consistent mid-60s tests proving the order of the day in a field of combinations that bounced up and down the scoreboard. Pip Gibbons went into Reserve on SWE Diamant Stern, and the duo were also the Saturday winners of the Equestrio Best Presented Award - they did look amazing!

THE BATES OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: SMALL AND MEDIUM TOUR TITLES The Surrey Trophy for Small Tour Champion went to Vanessa Way (Taranaki) and NSC Timbermill Prequel (Prestige VDL), plus the NZ Hanoverian Society Award for Best Performed Hanoverian (Medium to Grand Prix). Pahiatua’s Kallista Field was oh-so-close for Reserve, after winning the Round Two Freestyle on Felix Westfalia (72.817). Consistent throughout his career so far – Novice Horse of the Year Champion 2019 and winning the seven-year-old title earlier this year, Vanessa has taken her time with ‘Wills’. “I didn’t take him out until he was six [he’s now 8] because he was really tricky as a young horse, very reactive and fearful,” she explains, saying she doesn’t feel the need to take her horses out competing when they’re really young. “I take them out hacking and trekking and take them with me on my clinics. I want to take them out to lots of fun, nonstressful things - I do a really slow introduction to competing. But I am training them at home for those years.”

Vanessa’s patience has paid off. “Wills is really sweet now and I can put anyone on him. He’s sensitive and very willing to ride, and very kind. He is very good to compete, because he always wants to do the right thing and he’s always with me. His talent is in the collected work he was only Advanced Medium in March!” she recalls. “He has piaffe and passage, and already does 10, or 11 ones.” The Medium Tour Championship and Trotter Trophy was never in danger of going to anyone other than on-form Gaylene Lennard (Waikato) and her outstanding Jax Johnson (Johnson x Anamour) after their hat-trick of straight wins, including 74.33 in the Brett & Rosemary Carter Round One Musical. This test was a treat to watch, with fantastic trot music, quality passage and a foot-perfect finish. Reserve went to Wendi Williamson and her bouncy Don Frederico gelding Don Vito MH - his test was dotted with a few green moments (he did think the changes were very exciting!) but he is in experienced hands and is one to watch out for.

Chelsea Callaghan (Wellington) and Sisters II Etta J looked like they were having lots of fun, showing some beautiful one-time changes and pirouettes, plus they had a lot of fans in the crowd. They were just one of two combinations to choose to ride in a snaffle bridle at this level: the other being Anya Noble (Waikato) with Geronimo Star. Jacqui Thompson (Upper Hutt) and Georgio and Amy Sage (Waikato) with RM All About Me took home the Vanessa Way ProAm Champion and Reserve respectively for this level.

PRO AM WORTHY WINNERS Vanessa Way has chosen to sponsor these championships because she feels strongly about providing an incentive for non-professional riders tackling the higher levels. “I was one myself once, so I know how hard it is. There wasn’t anything at Nationals for those higher grades, and I felt that these riders needed to be rewarded.”
“
I do a lot of teaching now, and I know that when you go up the grades it doesn’t get easier, it gets harder,” says Vanessa. “There are things that we professional riders can do much more easily because we’ve done many repeats. For an amateur rider it can take a lot longer, so I really felt they needed to have something to work towards. I really wanted to make something for those riders that are training on and pushing into what I consider the really hard territory, knowing that they’re going to have a disadvantage against those of us who have done a lot of it before.” Jen Sim, winner of the Grand Prix ProAm title, agrees. “This award
was absolutely fantastic, as it was for riders who haven’t done a CDI, and I was the only rider [in the L9 classes] to be in my first season at Grand Prix,” she says. “I was chuffed to get it, and it’s wonderful that there is something like this as it encourages and rewards new riders to the upper levels.” Jen says riding Stoneylea Lancelot (by Limonit) at this level at Nationals was a massive milestone for both horse and rider. “His scores weren’t as good as he’s been getting, as he forgot how to do piaffe and passage!” explains Jen, “which is frightfully costly even if they do everything else in the test well. Also I’m a cruisy rider and don’t ride very

assertively - but you really need to at this level.” “It was very daunting competing at Grand Prix level with the best of the best but everyone has been unbelievably supportive and encouraging. It’s pretty intense and serious at that level, the tests are so busy and long - I’m exhausted!” Having previously ridden to Prix St Georges level, Jen says the jump up to Grand Prix has been a big learning curve. “It’s been the blind leading the blind. Learning and teaching your horse at the same time isn’t easy, but I’ve had amazing training and support from Andrea Raves,” she says. Known as ‘Lance’ at home, Jen has owned the twelveyear-old gelding (along with her mum Pauline Robertson) since he was six weeks old. She has done all of his training, including breaking in, and he has proved to be the ultimate versatile Kiwi horse. Jen would like to thank: her sponsors NPC Health, her wonderful supportive family, and all the workers, judges, and sponsors at Nationals. “It was a great show at a terrific venue. It was so wonderful to catch up with so many friends and fellow competitors, especially after lockdown - how lucky are we to live in NZ?”

There were a dozen starters in the Grand Prix test, an impressive achievement in itself for our sport at this level. Three riders each had two horses entered: Melissa Galloway (Marlborough) with Windermere J'Obéi W and Windermere Johanson W, Cooper Oborn (Palmerston North) with Aphrodite and Revelwood Showtime, and William Millar (Waikato) with Raukura Satori MH and Centurion III. The lineup also included South Island combination Dianne Wallace and Profile, Toni Louisson (Feilding) and Back on Track Astute, plus Masterton combination Catherine Tobin and I Like It. Jen Sim (Karaka) rode her very first Nationals Grand Prix, aboard Stoneylea Lancelot (the pair

going on to take the Vanessa Way Pro-Am title). Melissa Galloway won the first of what was to be a hat trick of wins with Windermere J'Obéi W (Johnson), and recorded a new personal best for this test while she was at it: 72.739. She also took second with Windermere Johanson W (also by Johnson), who was a star in his own right looking strong and consistent for 69.065. Vanessa Way (Taranaki) and the impressive Anamour gelding NSC Andreas were third, this being their single test for the competition and scoring 68.587. Just a fraction behind them in fourth was the ever popular William Millar and Raukura Satori MH (De Niro) on 68.565.

in time; a sentiment shared by all present. An outstanding effort from a particularly courageous athlete and her much loved an loyal partner.
Cooper Oborn was fifth on his lovely Anamour mare Aphrodite, putting 66.674 on the scoreboard (the pair went on to give a beautiful performance in the Freestyle, for a 70.435 score). Into sixth place was Diane Wallace and Profile (Prestige VDL), followed by Jody Hartstone and the now-gelded Lusitano Ali Baba, putting 64.957 on the scoreboard. The Cpack Musical Freestyle late Saturday afternoon was a treat for the crowd: Lucarne Dolley and Ardmore gave the leaders a good nudge to finish on 69%, and William Millar brought the house down with his Frank Sinatra soundtrack and some super work from Raukura Satori MH (71.345). Melissa Galloway and Windermere J'Obéi W absolutely nailed their test with another winning score of 75.655. But although they didn’t quite post the top score, the crowd agreed this class belonged to NZL Olympians & WEG representatives Julie Brougham and Vom Feinsten with a spine-tingling performance (and eventual second place, 74.745): their final salute brought the crowd to their feet for a prolonged standing ovation and it would be a safe bet that there were not too many dry eyes in the house! It was a very special moment
The final round was Martin Collins NZ sponsored Grand Prix Special. This test has some especially tricky bits, notably the passageextended trot-passage down the long side which always catches a few out, and this time was no exception. Melissa Galloway and J'Obéi put the final flourish on their domination of the championship with another win, and a score of 72.064 and the 2020 Burkner Medal. Their wins in the Grand Prix and the Musical also awarded them the Vom Feinsten and Tironui Trophies respectively. Melissa was followed in this class by William Millar and Raukura Satori MH (69.915) and Julie Brougham with Vom Feinsten (69.532). Cooper Oborn was fourth with a personal best riding Aphrodite, on 68.277. “I was really pleased with both my horses,” says Cooper. “Snickers [Aphrodite] can be quite sassy but that is part of what makes her good - she tries really hard, often too hard, and is over-enthusiastic! Freddie [Revelwood Showtime] has only done three shows at Grand Prix level so he’s very green and therefore made some mistakes. But overall I felt he tried really hard for me and did some great work.”

sport and the future of Dressage NZ. You’re only as good as your competition and if we want to be competitive overseas then we need to keep improving here in all aspects - riding, horses, venues etc, which we are! But we just need to keep pushing each other.” Toni Louisson and Back on Track Astute Photo: Libby Law Photography
Cooper agrees that it’s encouraging to have had such a strong Grand Prix field. “Yes, it’s amazing to have so many good combinations. It does force you to improve, and that is great for our DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | 23

WEBB EQUESTRIAN PARA-EQUESTRIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Report by Alyssa Harrison Photos by Libby Law Photography
The Para-Equestrians were all full of smiles and laughs at the Webb Equestrian Nationals. It was the last competition of 2020 for many, with many bringing their best to the competition, with a number some cracking the magical 70%
T
he Para-Equestrian Championship kicked off on Thursday, with a strong start by riders in all grades, all striving for the opportunity to be “in the pink” on day three. The striking pink covers and rosettes that the prizewinners received were admired and envied by many thanks to the generous sponsorship of Lloyd and Frankie from Webb Equestrian. Lloyd was a star in the eyes of many riders throughout the event too as helped out a number of riders as a ring in on site farrier! Jodie Thorne (Tauranga) and her ever so kind 11-year-old Ira Hayes just got better and better during the show receiving consistently high scores to win the Grade I Championship. Two personal best scores were a huge thrill for this immensely dedicated and determined rider. “I came into Nationals with a goal of hitting 70%, and I was so determined to do it! After scoring just under that mark on the first day, I made a plan with my team (to put my brave pants on and ride more forward!) and it worked! Ira was amazing, he did not put a foot wrong and we smashed our goal, cracking out scores above 70%. It was a fantastic achievement for both me and the team. It is such a huge team effort to even get Ira and I in the arena, so to hit our target was just awesome.” Nicola Essex (Pukekawa) and the 9-yearold mare Mirako SP had a clean sweep in the Grade II Championship, winning all three classes to put them ahead of Chontelle Honour (Rotorua) and her 11-year-old Eddiealex, who took out Reserve Champion.
28 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021
Horses are a family affair for the Essex family. Nicola’s mother Sally Essex was also competing (Grade IV). This pair are also great volunteers for eventing. You can just about bet that you will find them at the start box out greeting every rider with a grin before sending them on their way around the CrossCountry course. Rachel Shiree Hughes (Pokeno) and her blingy 10-year-old HPH Benedict took out the Grade III title. It was Levin’s Louise Duncan all the way in Grade IV Championship taking out the Champion and Reserve Champion on the 18-year-old Wolkenstein BC and 17-year-old Northern Ivanthus respectively. “It was just one of those rare shows where it all came together with both horses. They both loved the new warm-up and competition surfaces and were feeling at the top of their game throughout the weekend, setting me up for a great few days. I was not sure how the Nationals were going to be run due to the influence of Covid-19, but it is safe to say it did not disappoint!” “The show in itself was amazing, and I feel that a lot of effort was put in this year to include all the classes, something I feel that many of us are appreciative of, so thank you to all the competitors, organisers and volunteers who made this Nationals to remember!” Louise also headed off the competition to take home the Hunniman Trophy (awarded to the highest percentage freestyle performance across all of the grades) with Northern Ivanthus, on a score of 74.75%.

TALKING PONIES, PERFORMANCE & PRESENTATION Photos by Libby Law Photography
At their first attendance at Nationals, Kimberley Trow and Master Daniel of Nicholas Lodge won the Flight Centre Susanne McCardle Travel Broker Award for Best Performed Pony and took out one of the daily Equestrio Best Presented Awards. Jess Roberts caught up with Kimberley to find out more about the gorgeous ‘Danny’, and her best tips on getting a mud-loving grey pony turned out to perfection... 30 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021
BATES NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS RIGHT Chief Steward Rachel McCallum presents Kimberley Trow with one of the four Equestrio Best Presented Awards.
K
imberley (32) has been riding the nine-year-old Danny (by German Riding Pony stallion Davidoff) for his breeder and owner Lynette Smith since he was four. She says he is consistent and obliging to ride, with the best pony personality. “He definitely has a cheeky ‘I’m the man’ side, but is mostly such a sweet pony - always having a yarn with me with his cute little nicker sounds that he makes when I’m brushing him, or giving him scratches or just hanging out. At home we call him Danny or Dan Dan but if he is causing trouble with the other ponies, it’s Daniel!” At Nationals they contested the Marsh Equine & Livestock Amateur Novice championship, placing third in the second round (test 2C) from a 22-strong field. The pair have also done some showing at A&P shows, and at Land Rover Horse of the Year. They don’t jump competitively but Danny enjoys jumping for fun at home. Kimberley started out in Pony Club and has done a bit of everything including games and eventing. She now trains with Gaylene Lennard, “who is amazing,” says Kimberley. “I am super lucky to be able to have lessons with her.
KIMBERLEY ON: Riding at her first-ever Nationals… “I had an absolute
blast! I found everyone to be super welcoming. I was nervous about competing at this show as I’m only new to the scene. I didn’t know what to expect but it was all good, I had nothing to worry about. Everyone was kind, and looked out for each other in the warm ups, you got a ‘good luck’ from the rider in your test before you, or a ‘well done’ from the rider after you, it was really cool. The grounds were awesome as per usual with Taupo, I love riding there and I will definitely be coming back. Also a big thank you to all the sponsors, and the committee, volunteers, and judges, we really really appreciate it. We can see the hard work you put in and without you all it couldn’t happen.”
Turnout Tips… “Danny is a
grubby boy, if there is dirt or mud, he’s in it! I love the Bee Kind NZ whitening bars and shampoo, and I also use the Champion Tails purple shampoo for the tail and face - to
really whiten them up! And apart from being clean and tidy yourself, a smile and good vibes is always going to add that finishing touch.”
Riding ponies… “Lynette
[Smith] is like a second mum to me, and I am incredibly spoilt that I get to ride her ponies. When I was ten we bought my first fancy pony from her, Pinelea Sonatina. Years later when my partner and I moved to Cambridge, I went to visit Lynette for a catch-up and see the cute ponies she’d bred, and to see Pinelea Sonatina (Danny’s grand-dam) who was by then well into her late 20's, and I started riding for Lynette again. When Danny was backed and ready to start his ridden career we gelled straight away, and have been competing him ever since, along with his full sister Izzylea. There’s one more young one to be started, Pipperlea, who will be out hopefully next season.”
Future Goals… “I think we will keep on keeping on with dressage and see how we go and keep trying to improve ourselves.”

LILLY & LILLY SCOOP UP THE FEI YOUNG RIDER MEDAL After solid wins in both rounds of the BV Contracting FEI Young Rider Medallist classes, Palmerston North based rider Lilly Jefferies (20) and her mare Lindisfarne Laureate (also known as Lilly!) were the undisputed overall winners
A
small but talented field of four young riders contested the coveted medallist classes, the bid opening with the BV Contracting Musical Freestyle. The two Lilly’s were all class during their test: very accurate to the music, a bold and impressive set of changes up the centreline and elegantly ridden to finish on 68.25. Second spot went to nineteen-year-old Anna Wilson (Waikato) aboard Neversfelde Rupert with 64.25, and riding into third was Madison Schollum, on Kinnordy Golda (63.125) with Tayla McDonald and Ramsbury in fourth place with 60.375. The Individual test saw a repeat of the first and second placings and similar scoring, but Tayla but Madison switched around for third and fourth places respectively after Kinnordy Golda decided to spice up her test with a few extra moves! Madison managed this so well with her trademark cool, calm and collected riding, but it did cost them precious marks. Madison is now relocating to Auckland to begin an exciting new chapter as Assistant Rider and Head Groom at Wendi & Jon Williamson’s Waitekauri Farm. Having only had Neversfelde Rupert for four months and ridden him in her first ever Advanced test months ago at her local Winter Series, Anna Wilson did a brilliant job for the Reserve Champion sash. Previously she had only ridden ponies; to Medium with her pony Pepee, and still competes her pony Gizbo at Novice. “I’m very lucky to have a horse like Rupert to take me through my first season on hacks,” she says. “Stringing together the movements in these tests is so much harder than I could have anticipated, they all come up so quickly! The top riders make it look so easy. I’ve only had a few months to learn to ride sequence changes and canter pirouettes within a test.” Anna trains with long-time coach Amy de Langen. “She’s absolutely fantastic and one of the main reasons I was able to get ready for Nationals in a short time, as she knows me and
my riding so well. I’ve also had opportunities to train with other cool coaches through Pony Club and Dressage NZ Squad opportunities.” Lilly Jefferies is currently based as a working pupil for Grand Prix rider Cooper Oborn, something that she is really enjoying. “Cooper was looking for a worker, and I was looking to do something different and have a gap year from Uni,” she says, with one year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree already under her belt. “I’ve only been here since July but learned so much already and had a lot of good experiences - riding different horses and handling them and working in a more professional situation.” This is Lilly’s second season with Lindisfarne Laureate (by Vollrath Lessing). “I’ve had her for about eighteen months. Originally when we were looking for either a schoolmaster or a young horse for me, we travelled all over the country; Lilly was just 20 minutes down the road!” Having been trained and competed to FEI Intermediate II level by Rosanne Rix, Lilly downgraded the mare to begin, as she had only ridden to Advanced at that point with well-known and performed pony Prima Magneto. Lilly’s main goal now is to steadily train towards competing at Grand Prix level. After a rocky run-up to Nationals - Lilly (the horse) had been unwell with a digestive issue that involved a short stay at the Massey University Vet Clinic, which meant she was only back in work for a month before Taupo - Lilly (the rider) says just getting to the competition was a highlight. “We only decided the week that Nationals started if we were even going to come or not. So I was really happy with my tests.” The pair finished their show on a high, not only taking the Young Rider win. but also being presented with the Rakanui Stud Trophy for Best Performed Mare of the competition and the Sterling Warmbloods Small Stars Award for Small Tour level.

She says Jett has an unbelievable temperament, like his sire HP Fresco. “He is very laid back and sleeps three times a day. He is also absolutely cheeky! BATES NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS Andrea Raves, Sue Hobson & Mary Craine
AR DRESSAGE JUDGE OF THE YEAR For the second time Mary Craine has won the AR Dressage sponsored Dressage New Zealand Judge of the Year Award. Mary was nominated by Dressage Central Districts. She is always fair and positive and therefore it is always a pleasure to see her sitting at the end of the dressage arena. Although Mary is based in the neighboring Southern Hawke’s Bay area, she also willingly stepped in to help the Central Districts Group with the judge’s officer role for their Premier League event this year. National Judges officer Sue Hobson adds that Mary is a very dedicated judge who travels extensively throughout the country in her capacity as an A level judge and so spends many weekends away from her Dannnevirke hometown, Thank you Mary.
Celine Filbee, Penelope Peck and Scott McKenna
VOLUNTEER OF THE NATIONALS SHOW AWARD Penelope Peck (Palmerston North) didn’t even have to wait to be invited! Several weeks before the event she rang the organisers to offer her help - first it was for two days and then it was for all four – camping in a portacom cabin, starting early, finishing late, running errands of many kinds without complaint for the organizers from dawn til late. We would love to know how many steps Nellie did at the event! Nellie is also a familiar face at the Land Rover Horse of the Year as a dedicated runner in the oval and has booked more annual leave to come and assist at the Youth Festival in January. Dressage NZ feels privileged to have volunteers of Nellie’s calibre on our team - thank you for all you do.

SHOW OF THE YEAR AWARD “At last” was all Debra Cowen could say when the Waikato Premier League event 2020 was announced as this year’s winner. “I was beginning to wonder what we had to do to win it” Waikato moved their annual championship show to the Taupo NEC from the Kihikihi Domain a number
of years ago and the event has developed into one of the biggest and most popular events on the autumn end of the circuit. Debra was joined by fellow group members Christine Hartstone, Vicki Gibbs and Christine Weal to receive the award presented by Novice Super 5 League sponsor Judith Matthews. ALL-IN-FLEX VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR PETER JENKINS Peter Jenkins (Taupo) was a popular winner of the 2020 All-in-Flex Volunteer of the Year award having been awarded the volunteer of the month earlier this year. He is currently Chairman of Dressage Bay of Plenty and if that wasn’t time consuming enough with four branches to oversee (Rotorua, Taupo, Eastern Bay & Tauranga) he has also taken on the mammoth task of organising writers for Waikato Championships, Bay of Plenty Championships, the National Youth Festival and National Championships. But behind every good man stands a good woman, and was fitting that Peter’s wife Ali was also acknowledged at the Annual Awards evening for her support of his huge contribution of time to Dressage.
Bernice Frost
KAYE FISSENDEN MEMORIAL TROPHY FOR AN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO DRESSAGE NZ AND A CENTURY CLUB AWARD Bernice Frost is an inspiration to all. Based in the somewhat isolated central North Island town of Raetihi, she has dedicated the last three decades to dressage. Back in the early 1990s along with Ted Gilbert and Christine Reynolds she founded the Taihape Area Dressage Group, their competition venue based in Taihape some 70km from her hometown. She has been an active member of this group ever since and has been the area delegate for as long as anyone can remember. Bernice never seeks the limelight but is the backbone behind a small team who run the Taihape Area Premier League events. This group has been running championship shows since 1994 and is now famous for their Santa prizegiving and Area Teams fun skits on Saturday night. Bernice still rides competitively on ER Arabella up to advanced medium level. The time capsule was officially opened at the Awards Dinner too and it was revealed that this timeless combination age totals 102 years! So, the Dressage NZ Century Award Rosette was also duly presented. Truly an inspiration. Bernice was nominated by Dressage Central Districts.

BATES NATIONAL DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS Andrea Raves, Sue Hobson and Jos Gresham
AR DRESSAGE OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR Jos Gresham (Bulls) Nominated by Dressage Central Districts. Jos is just awesome. She gives up her time to multiple area groups and national events in both North and South Islands and works long hours in her Official role as a steward and stable manager.
Jos Gresham - a familair figure at the stables
Recently at the national championships Jos got a 4am call out to a horse injured in the stables by another member of the OC and this is the feedback we received from the horse owner. “Accidents do happen and of course we were very disappointed. My daughter worked hard towards this event. However, the way Jos and the other lady (Kate Honour), handled the whole situation was 10 out of 10! Both ladies checked up on the horse and us at least every hour making sure we were all looked after and well cared for. Even days after the event Jos kept checking/mailing us to see how the horse was doing. Thank you so much! Simply mind-blowing” Jos’s commitment often crosses over into volunteer roles as event secretary and organizer not just for Central districts but for several other area groups and large national shows each year. She is efficient and well organized she does an incredible amount of work whilst always maintaining a friendly disposition. She deserves recognition not just from her own group but from a wider audience nationally.
KARMARGEN FAIRPLAY AND SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Suzanne Inglis and Sue Hobson
Suzanne Inglis (Nelson) received nominations for the Kamargen Fairplay & Sportsmanship Award for her support of both officials and riders, especially those new to the sport. This award is generously made possible by Karen & Peter Trotter and brings with it the Windsor Lad Trophy and a $500 Training Grant. A common theme was noted by those who nominated her for this award. Suzanne’s informative Facebook posts are enjoyed by many, especially new riders, and officials in the sport. She is always at competitions explaining rules and all things dressage to encourage everyone. Suzanne is also supportive of grass roots dressage riders with our Area Pony Club dressage competitions. She has coached teams or been an official, as well as this year organising our competition also. Suzanne is so supportive to all in the sport. She Was also instrumental in Nelson having a full winter series even with the complications of COVID-19.This kept riders motivated during these difficult times. Her efforts are much appreciated. Thanks Suzanne Inglis – a deserving winner.

PREMIUM ARENA MIX The recycling process takes used tyres which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or shipped offshore to be burnt. At our plant in Cambridge our triple treated refinery process uses a series of shredders and magnets to produce a consistent evenly sized material that is 99.9% metal free. Why use Treadlite arena mix: • Less wear and tear on horses hooves • Reduced concussion on joints through better impact absorption • Lively surface allows horses to get more air above the ground and better take off for jumping • Maintains a more even spread than traditional sand surface • Less affected by rain • Reduced dust means less respiratory issues • Can be used alone over base-coarse or spread on top and mixed with existing sand

Amanda Condon A PASSION FOR PARTNERSHIPS
Dressage NZ welcomes Canterbury’s Amanda Condon to the team in the role of Dressage NZ Partnership Facilitator. We look forward to Amanda joining us in early December and sharing her expertise in notfor-profit fundraising and her enthusiasm for dressage. In a volunteer capacity this year I assisted organising the Pryde’s EasiFeed Dressage NZ 2020 South Island’s Young Rider Development Camp. I took on the role to secure a variety of sponsors who donated goods to the camp, ensuring all the riders received a fantastic goodie bag of products. In return, and to reinforce the important message of gratitude, all sponsors received a thank you card signed by the riders.
O

My daughter Beth has been riding horses all her life, and we have been involved in the Dressage community in Canterbury for the past eighteen months. Beth is
I have a background in marketing and fundraising, fed by my passion for searching out opportunities and events appropriate for sponsorship. Until earlier this year I was the Marketing Manager at Discover Travel where I executed, in collaboration with a small team, an auction fundraising event for Tanzania’s The Plaster House raising over $29,000. Before that, during my time as St Michael’s Church School’s Marketing Manager, I secured over $129,000 in grant funding for a new playground, IT enhancements, and musical instruments. 46 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021

We regularly attend working bees at McLeans Island NEC, and always ensure we assist on event days: be it writing, collecting test papers, putting away arenas, or assisting other competitors. When I’m not working, I’m busy at home in Ohoka, North Canterbury, with my husband and daughter, two dogs, and a couple of horses. I am looking forward to building strong relationships with our current loyal sponsors, obtaining new sponsors, and meeting everyone involved with Dressage New Zealand”. TAKING ON TOMORROW Story by Alyssa Harrison Photo by Mel's Moments Photography
WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS? Short term, I would love to compete at Elementary with Lily. It is a goal I have been working towards for a while now, and it is my goal to achieve it this season.
O
livia Goodwillie and her cleverly named horse, ‘Retail Therapy’, have been making waves on the South Island Dressage Circuit, winning the Silver Section of the Equizee Top 10 League. An 18-year-old student at Rangi Ruru Girls High School in Christchurch, Olivia has recently changed her main focus to Dressage and was a part of the Pryde’s Easifeed 2020 Dressage NZ Youth Development Camp. In this interview, I chat with her about her experiences at the camp and her own personal goals within the sport.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RIDING? I have been riding for as long as I can remember. I started riding when I was five and had to take up a sport, so I chose to go for a riding lesson. The rest is history! I used to do Eventing, but found I was spending more time jumping the jumps without my horse, so I made the switch to straight Dressage and never looked back.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER SCHOOL? My plan is to go to Lincoln University next year and study Food Science. I have had my heart set on this major for two years now, so I am super lucky to have a University in Christchurch that offers the course I want to do so I can continue riding while studying.
WHO IS YOUR TEAM FOR THE SEASON? I only have one horse for the coming season, my 15.3hh Thoroughbred mare Retail Therapy (Lily). I have had her for four years now, and we have come so far together over the past few years. I am really excited to see how far we can go together and to see what the future holds for us; she is incredibly special.
Longer term, I want to take Lily as high as I can through the levels, hopefully achieving Advanced Medium over the next few years.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? So far, my biggest achievement to date would be winning the Silver Section of the Equizee Top 10 League this past season, after winning the Bronze Section the year before. I was super proud that we achieved this, it was a big accomplishment for Lily and me.
HOW DID THE CAMP BENEFIT YOU? By going to camp, I learnt so many new things around horse management, as well as riding. In the sessions that we had, we all got to learn about saddle fitting and how to do it correctly, turnout tips, musical freestyles and feeding. They were all so beneficial and crucial towards our horses, especially the feeding aspect. The talk on feeds that was done by Pryde’s Easifeed team improved my understanding drastically around how different feeds affect the horses way of going, as well as the turnout tips which have taught me how to get the finished, ‘polished’ look, adding that final touch to our performance.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THE CAMP, AND WHY? My biggest takeaway from the camp was the advice I received from Melissa Galloway during my lessons with her. It has benefited me greatly, with huge improvement already showing in the competitions I have had since Melissa helped me. I was incredibly lucky to have the opportunity and train with Melissa, I never would have had this opportunity otherwise, so I am super thankful to the organisers for providing the younger riders with these camps. SEMMIEKE ROTHENBERGER TAKES THE FEI RISING STAR AWARD FOR 2020 Article and Photos by FEI/Liz Gregg
FEI Awards 2019, Moscow, Semmieke Rothenberger receiving the Rising Star Award from Mattieu Baumgartner
Dressage athlete Semmieke Rothenberger, winner of the Longines FEI Rising Star Award, was overcome with emotion when her family held a surprise presentation of the award at their home in Germany. This is the second time Semmieke has won the award but in 2020, Covid 19 put a stop to the big FEI celebration.

“
I’m very grateful that so many people voted for me and that there is such a big fan base of people that support me,” Semmieke Rothenberger said. “It is also quite surreal because there were so many good athletes in this category, including my brother Sönke, so I didn’t really expect that I would win it again.” The 21-year-old, winner of 22 FEI Dressage European Championship medals through all the youth categories right up to Young Riders, has even bigger goals for the future. “My parents have always taught me to dream big and reach for my goals and I would really like to canter on that centre line of the Olympic Games one day. my brother and I would love to see myself there with one of my horses and feel the atmosphere of representing my country at the Olympics!” Along with other individual FEI Award winners, Semmieke Rothenberger received an elegant timepiece from FEI Top Partner Longines, the Swiss watch brand which attaches great importance to encouraging young people to practice sports. “This Longines FEI Rising Star
Award was created to recognise young athletes between the ages of 14 and 21 who demonstrate outstanding equestrian sporting talent,” Longines Vice President of Marketing Matthieu Baumgartner said. “We are delighted to once again celebrate Semmieke Rothenberger’s dedication to equestrian sport and we applaud her determination, passion and energy, which we are confident will take her to the very top in her sporting career.”

FAST FORWARD TWENTY YEARS Kallista Field and Felix Westfalia and the recent National Dressage Championships where they took out reserve champion Small Tour. Photo: Libby Law Photography
MARKING 20 YEARS SINCE THE SYDNEY OLYMPICS Article by Jess Roberts
With just one horse each to compete, Sharon and Kallista Field are enjoying the slower pace of life at their Pahiatua yard these days. They certainly don’t miss the long days and hard work that accompanied standing their imported stallion Salutation and keeping a full team of competition and schooling horses in work. “It’s more enjoyable now than ten or twenty years ago” says Sharon. “Now if we miss a day and go shopping, it doesn’t matter!” 50 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021

his mother-and-daughter team need no introduction, being woven firmly into New Zealand’s dressage history. Sharon is a true pioneer of this sport, beginning her journey when dressage was in its infancy, training multiple horses to Grand Prix and qualifying her horse Mosaic for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Mosaic was subsequently purchased by Australia’s Mary Hanna and this little barely16hh NZL bred chestnut took Hanna to her first international event, representing Australia at the World Championships in Den Hague, the Atlanta Olympics and became the first Australian (owned) horse to make the Special and finished twenty third in the World. He also represented his country at the World Games in Rome 1998 and three World Cup finals. Kallista was the first dressage rider ever to represent New Zealand at an Olympic Games (Sydney 2000), at just twenty-two years young, on the classy NZL bred mare Waikare. The pair qualified for the second round, the Grand Prix Special, and came within one place of moving through to the Freestyle. New Zealand fans were beside themselves with excitement. Kallista was also a member of the first NZL team ever to compete at a World Equestrian Games in Rome 1998 on Janeiro and then competed again as an individual in Jerez 2002 on Maxx Jamahl.
Kallista Field and Maxx Jamahl at the Jerez 2002 World Equestrian Games.
The pair have bred and produced many top-quality dressage horses over the years, and while nowadays they have just one horse each, they’re more competitive than ever. Their 2020 season has got off to a flying start: at the Central Districts Championships Kallista won both the Small Tour Freestyle and Inter I with Felix Westfalia (Franziskus), while Sharon was first and second in the 6A and 6B respectively with her super little Donnerubin gelding Nico FE. At the Bay of Plenty Premier League event, Kallista took home the Small Tour title, winning all three tests with scores well into the 70's; the best in the Musical on 75.938. At the recent National Championships, Kallista and Felix again won their Freestyle and were Reserve National Champions for the Small Tour. Sharon was in the

the Horse of the Year show when it was held up in Auckland. “I needed a groom! Because I had two horses, one Grand Prix horse and a Prix St George horse coming up. So I used to take one out of school and give them some sort of something up there that I thought was educational, like Kelly Tarltons,” she laughs. “And we’d discuss the terrain as we drove up the middle of the North Island - it probably didn’t soak in but I thought I was doing my best!”

money in both rounds of the Open Advanced: in the 6A, where she was third (69.561), just 0.088 of a percent separated the top three! Sharon found Nico FE at Arapito Pony Stud in Cambridge. He’s out of a part-Arab mare, around 15.1hh and she says he’s a lovely horse. “He’s going really well; I’m pleased with him. He’s working harder and harder - he has to work harder than Felix because he’s not quite as talented,” says Sharon. “He only ever does one test a day, because he’s only got energy for one!” Which prompts Kallista to joke “Mum’s a one-hit wonder!” Sharon and Kallista still train together daily and help each other out. Kallista’s two-year-old daughter Katherine goes for a walk with her doting grandfather Peter (Sharon’s husband) each morning during riding time. Do they have any disagreements in the arena? “Not as much as when she was young!” laughs Sharon. “But we talk about things. We talk about lots of stuff. Someone on the ground sometimes sees a bit of a different picture. You need someone on the ground with dressage, it’s that kind of sport.”
Kallista. “We especially hack around town for Felix. We go past Books and Toys, down the main street, past the school and all the kids come running over, he still isn’t used to that! But the horses get used to traffic and dogs and kids on bikes.” When Sharon first started dressage, she had lessons with the legendary Eric Ropiha. “He was a big part of it, even though he also did racing and eventing, and ran our Pony Club. He imported the Hanoverian stallion Witzbold, who my horse Mosaic was by. Then later I trained with Clemens Dierks.” She also remembers taking each of her two daughters out of school on different occasions, to attend Sharon and Kallista Field helping out at local dressage.
They also go riding with a friend from up the road. Their route takes them right through town and past the local school, which still gets exciting for the lively Felix. “We go hacking every week and I hate it!” jokes 52 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021
There are several nice youngsters waiting in the wings at Sharon and Kallista’s Pahiatua property, due to come into work next year. In the meantime, they’re both enjoying the steady work of training their horses toward Grand Prix. “Felix finds it all quite easy,” says Sharon. “I go one day at a time on Nico. We’re learning our ones; we have a bit of piaffe. We play around with it, Nico and I, and just have fun.” Sharon & Kallista are both truly dedicated to their sport, every year giving up the opportunity to compete at their local Premier League event to be key members of the organising committee. Sharon is an accomplished announcer while Kallista just does anything that needs doing!

ENGAGEMENT CORNER With Christine Weal - Dressage NZ Performance and Development Board Member
A
highlight this month was the Bates National Dressage Championships held at Taupo. Bates and David JonesParry have been tremendous supporters of dressage and have been loyal sponsors of this show for 22 years. It was a delightful weekend with positive feedback all around about the show’s central location, with great yarding and surfaces to compete on. It was also a great idea of the organisers to have the Dressage Awards Dinner at nationals, as this made for an entertaining and social evening. Also, it was a super opportunity for riders to get to know the sponsors better and put faces to the names. The battle for the Grand Prix freestyle added to the enjoyment of the evening. The sport of dressage is in an excellent position at the moment. There is a high standard of Grand Prix riders to watch and aspire to and everyone pushing each other to strive to be better. Vanessa Way won the six-year-old Elite Equine Young Horse Championship with an impressively high score of 89.4%. It is worth noting the effort all these young horses made, given how early in the season Nationals was and the fact they are
just coming out of winter training. It’s encouraging to see so many talented young horses coming through across the levels. Morgan Beere made a great impression in her first advanced start winning the championship on her talented young mare Redwood Furst Affair (Furstenball). This was an incredible feat for a young rider who has done all the work on this horse herself from breaking in through to advanced. It is a credit to these young riders to see them giving more senior riders a good challenge in these classes. Casey Burton on Fanfare MH (another Furstenball) won the Advanced Medium Championship. Results aside, one of the most memorable moments at Nationals was seeing Julie and Vom Feinsten compete so beautifully. Congratulations to the organisers of Equifest. They managed to keep the show on the road despite bad weather for setting up as well as the uncertainty of COVID-19 hanging looming. Even though there was no dressage competition, the sport was well represented with Jody Hartstone, Holly Leach and Julie Malcolm in the line-up of presenters. ENGAGEMENT CORNER HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? Between Tyler (my husband) and I, we run a sheep and dairy support farm. I also give lessons, and we break in and school horses.
WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT DRESSAGE?
Rebecca McKee and Solo
Rebecca McKee HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRESSAGE? I had started breeding jumpers, and they needed something to do before their jumping career, so I took them showing and out to dressage as young horses. Although none of them were great dressage horses, I started to enjoy the discipline and the challenge of dressage. I then got a ride on a lovely young warmblood destined for the show ring, and we took her and tried the four-year-old class at nationals the last time it was in Christchurch, and got second to Solo, and from then on, I was hooked.
CURRENT SQUAD HORSE? Solo a twelve-year-old by Salutation out of Rosalita (Krack C)
HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT? I am on the Southland Dressage Committee, also the area Delegate, and our local Riders Rep.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING WITH YOUR LIFE AT WEEKENDS IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE HORSES? I always joke to people at shows when the weather is terrible, or the horses aren’t quite going right that I could be in Hawaii on the beach drinking cocktails! Covid is a problem with that now.
54 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN DECEMBER / JANUARY 2021
The feeling the horse gives you when it all comes together, and they are powerful and but give you a beautiful feeling.
WHO HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR EQUESTRIAN CAREER? For the past about eight or nine years, Christine Weal has been my main coach and mentor. She has worked me out mentally and knows my horses and me so well that I can ring her at a show and tell her what’s going on and she can tell me exactly what to do, and funnily enough it always works!
WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU? Everything coming together on a single day. Family life going well, everyone supporting each other, horses going well, being organised (because I’m not the best at that) and just feeling like it’s all going in the right direction.
A PEARL OF WISDOM FOR RIDERS AND READERS? When people get frustrated with their life or horses, I do like to remind them to look back on where they have come from and how far they have come. It’s great to look forward, but I think sometimes we need to appreciate how hard we have worked to be where we are.

Amy and RM All About Me PHOTO: Libby Law Photography
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRESSAGE? I used to do showing when I was on ponies, and when I turned sixteen I decided I wanted a new challenge, so we bought my first dressage horse RM All About Me. I had dabbled a little bit in level 1 and 2 on my ponies but nothing too serious.
CURRENT SQUAD HORSE? RM All About Me - a 12-year-old mare competing at Medium Tour.
HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT? Mum has been involved with lots of committees over the years, and I’ve always tagged along with her, building, and taking down arenas for shows, collecting test sheets, writing and other jobs when time allows.
HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR DRESSAGE CAREER? Until just a few months ago, I was working as a working pupil/groom to fund my horse and lessons. I’m currently schooling other people’s horses and making musicals whilst trying to figure out what I’m going to do in the future.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST GOAL? I would love to get my mare to Grand Prix, but more importantly, I just want to enjoy every ride on her. I also have some very beautiful young horses that I’d love to train as best I can, hopefully to Grand Prix!
WHO HAS INFLUENCED YOU IN YOUR EQUESTRIAN CAREER? I owe a lot to my coach Vanessa Way who has taken me under her wing and helped me get to where I am today. I wouldn’t be the rider I am without her guidance. Also, my mum
Nicole, who has helped me every step of the way since the very beginning and has always believed in me.
WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT DRESSAGE? Getting a glimpse of that perfect feeling that we train so hard to get. Even if it only lasts a few steps.
HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK? I like to get all my riding done in the morning when possible. I generally ride between three to six horses a day depending on what horses I’ve got in work and in for
schooling. I then do all my chores in the afternoon like mucking out, cleaning gear, making feeds, and feeding out and changing rugs. I try to be in by 6:30 pm, but sometimes it’s a bit later. I would love to be in bed by 10pm but depending on how much work I need to do on the computer it can easily be a lot later.
A PEARL OF WISDOM FOR RIDERS AND READERS? Don’t wait for everything to be perfect, get out there and give it a go. Otherwise, you could be waiting forever!

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL? To compete overseas and represent New Zealand.
WHO HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR EQUESTRIAN CAREER? My coach Sheena Ross. She has been there right from the start of my dressage career and has been a massive support in getting me to where I am now.
WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT DRESSAGE? I love that there is always something to learn and be perfecting and the feeling of when it all comes together.
Brina Carpenter HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRESSAGE? I never enjoyed jumping much when I was younger, and when I outgrew ponies, I decided that I wanted to do dressage.
CURRENT SQUAD HORSE? Leo Donna is an 11-year-old mare by Don Quattro. Julia Fraser bred her, and I got her about a year ago from Alicia Zeludko.
WHO INSPIRES YOU? Catherine Dufour. She has a fantastic work ethic and puts so much time and dedication into each of her horses.
HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR SPORT? I help at competitions by doing lots of writing. It’s not only a great way to give back to dressage, but it’s also an excellent way to learn from the judges.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST HORSE THAT YOU FOUND SUCCESS WITH AND WHY WAS THAT HORSE SPECIAL? My first hack Plutonium Lady (Lily). I knew nothing about dressage when I got her, and together, we have gone through to Advanced.
WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE? I usually wake up around 6.30 and do some study or work on assignments (I’m in my second year at Auckland University). I then go to the horses about 8 am and will ride/ muck out etc. before heading into Uni about lunchtime. I am at Uni for the afternoon, and most evenings I am at work.

OUR PEOPLE Liz Hutson and Hapsburg PSH Photo: Libby Law Photography
herself. Liz has trained Pete from a youngster so all credit for this achievement. Liz is one of those members who knows and understands that for our sport to survive and prosper, that riders must step up and contribute if events and other group activities are to meet their needs. That there is no point sitting back and complaining that what is on offer doesn’t suit - she just rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck in. And this is what happened when Dressage NZ partnered with Dressage Wellington to host the 2020 FEI Challenge – Liz was a pivotal contact and local organiser for the Dressage NZ team to work with as well as assisting secure funding for the event.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH LIZ HUTSON Sponsored by Big Barrel Article by Celine Filbee
Liz is one of those types that gets what she wants. This is because she is prepared to plan and work hard to get it.
A
t eleven years old she took the contents of her squirrel saver, popped round to the local riding school with some friends who lent her the extra twenty bucks she needed and purchased “Phantom”. The bonus was, he came with a bridle. What she did not tell her parents was that he was three-year-old colt! He sometimes lived in their suburban back yard. He was soon gelded on the side of the river for a further thirty bucks, he was sold on two years later for $300. She
then stepped up to a Palomino mare called Honey of course, described as a “second pony” we all know what that means said Liz, consequently she was a bit of disaster. From those humble beginning Liz has progressed to the lofty heights of being selected for the NZL team at the 2020 FEI Dressage World Challenge on Hapsburgh PSH (Pete) at Intermediate I level saying she was absolutely amazed as there were so many deserving combinations and she was proud of her horse and Photo: Libby Law Photography

When you talk to Liz’s team at Dressage Wellington the response was loud and clear. If you want something done properly, ask Liz. She admits she finds it hard to say no but enjoys feeling part of the need and needed. She has volunteered her horse for the Australian team at the U25 Youth Festival and thoroughly enjoys seeing the confirmation of her training. “It is rewarding when a complete stranger can hop on Pete push his buttons and get the right answer”. So much so that the Waldebago Trophy for the NZ Young Rider Championship found it way back to Australia this year. An upholsterer by trade following in the footsteps of her father, she has an eye for style and can spot a sexy, trendy, retro or desirable piece of furniture from the other side of a twenty-metre circle. Shout out to Liz as the recipient of this month’s Big Barrel volunteer prize. For mates rates, exclusive offers and all your party needs visit your nearest Big Barrel and join their Mates Club. M OFFICIAL OF THE MONTH MURA LOVE Sponsored by AR Dressage Article by Celine Filbee
Photo: Libby Law Photography
ura Love’s commitment to equestrian sport is truly evident when you realise his massive contribution and passion for our sport. He is a 3* FEI Dressage Judge, FEI Para Dressage Judge and FEI Eventing Judge. To achieve those qualifications and maintain accreditations requires significant dedication and ongoing personal development. More recently Mura acted as “Foreign Judge” at the NZL section of the FEI Dressage World Challenge when Covid prevented international travel, and then he went on to the Bates National Championships to judge both Para Equestrian and national dressage competitions of all levels’. “These roles and responsibilities have given me the opportunity to develop a depth of international experience across equestrian sports, having Judged in Europe, Great Britain, Asia, South America, Australia, and NZ, at both FEI and National level Events. Currently I am on the DNZ Judges Sub Committee assisting the guidance and direction of our National Judges. This role also includes is acting as a Judge Educator and Mentor for NZ Dressage Judges and presenting and co-presenting National Dressage Clinics.” Mura has also competed at all levels of Dressage up to and including Grand Prix level and have assisted training of judges, riders, and coaches both in NZ and overseas. His Grand Prix mount, the Gisborne bred J L Champs Elysee' recently returned home from Canterbury to retire after a successful competition career. Outside of these commitments, his other passions are surfing, competing in multi-discipline sports and spending time with family and friends. Our sport is indeed fortunate to have such passionate officials. Mura is the recipient of this month’s AR Dressage Official’s prize. For further information on AR Dressage contact Andrea at tetch@xtra.co.nz.
