FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO ISSUE FIFTY THREE OF THE DRESSAGE NZ BULLETIN

W

ell who knew that a coloring in competition could create such hilarity – the Colour our World Awards Dinner was entertaining indeed, and along with the Equestrian Sports Hall of Fame function certainly gave our sport a great send off to the 20/21 season. As we start preparing for the season ahead, I would like to take the opportunity to thank three groups of members who have put a lot of time into new initiatives for the coming season. The Young Rider group whose conference proposal to introduce a Youth council to advocate for youth in dressage was applauded for their work and also recognised sport wide by Equestrian Sports. The Group who reviewed the current Amateur eligibility rules and proposed the Gold Silver Bronze divisions which has been accepted as a trial for the coming season and the Young Dressage Horse Competition review group. A lot going on behind the scenes.

But all the positive activity and goodwill can be dashed in a flash. One of the major culprits is our friend Social Media. Before your write anything or post a retort, think carefully how your post may be viewed by our funders, supporters, and sponsors. The outcome can be they do not wish to be associated with such behaviours even though you may consider it is a personal statement, your view, and your right to say it. The pressures can be real. Don’t undo the work that’s been done. We are very fortunate to welcome back many of our loyal sponsors and new for this season. They love the personal thank you from you, prizewinner or not. A Facebook post is easy. A personal note takes a little longer but does not go unnoticed. The dividends can be huge. The recent tragedy and sadness experienced in another high-profile sport should be a reminder to us all to us all about the pressures athletes endure. Let us all try to make sure our sport is a safe and enjoyable space at all levels both in and out of the field of play.

THE UNTOUCHABLE GERMANS Article by Louise Parkes FEI Photos by FEI

Victory for Germany in the Dressage team event at the Tokyo 2020 (August 2021) Olympic Games will go down in the history books. For the last twenty-seven years they have been all but unbeatable at this level of the sport, and again they reigned supreme ahead of USA in silver and Great Britain in bronze.

T

here had been mixed reviews for the new Olympic team format which separated athletes into groups and reduced team numbers to three, with no drop score. But there was no denying the increased intensity and excitement it created in the deciding Grand Prix Special. While the Germans came

out clear champions, the battle for silver and bronze was a thriller to the very end. And a new star was born. Germany’s Jessica von BredowWerndl stole the show with the new Olympic Grand Prix Special score of 84.666 with the mare Dalera, team-mate Isabell Werth posting 83.298 with a beautiful performance from her beloved Bella Rose after Dorothee Schneider and Showtime set the German standard scoring 80.086 But it was a relatively unknown American combination who produced the third-best score of the day and ultimately decided the fate of the team medals. Sabine Schut-Kery and Sancero rocketed onto the world stage giving the USA a real chance of a medal. Great Britain looked set for silver in the early stages after Carl Hester and En Vogue posted 78.344, and it seemed Denmark and the USA were locked into a game of catand-mouse for the bronze. But the Americans were rock solid, Adrienne Lyle’s 76.109 with Salvino and Steffen Peters and Suppenkasper backed that up with 77.766 putting them into the silver medal position.

NEW OLYMPIC RECORDS SET Article by Louise Parkes FEI

Tears and cheers as Jessica von Bredow-Werndl takes individual gold

E

verything about the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games had been a journey into the unknown. But there was a ring of familiarity combined with a spirit of great sport when Germany’s Jessica von BredowWerndl claimed the Individual Dressage title with the lovely mare TSF Dalera and teammate Isabell Werth had to settle for silver with Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin taking the bronze. It was the perfect end to four fabulous days of Olympic dressage. The new champion was on song, setting a new Olympic record in the Grand Prix Special, producing a performance that oozed such class and elegance that once she left the arena on a score of 91.732, it seemed impossible she could be beaten. The tension and emotions in the closing stages were extreme. Of four remaining combinations still left to take their turn, three of them were a real threat, and as she was trying to engage in a post-competition media interview Von Bredow-Werndl’s eyes were glued to the nearby screen, because, third-last to go, Isabell Werth was in the ring. When Werth’s score of 89.675 was posted Von Bredow-Werndl burst into tears and fled back to the stables, overcome by the real possibility that Olympic gold within her reach. Second-last to go was defending Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin with Gio, the ten year old gelding, still new to Grand Prix having been a late replacement for Mt St John Freestyle. Gio had previously only ever competed at one international show, at Hagen in Germany in April. Unaware of the level of exposure he was now getting, the little chestnut gave his all for a score of 88.543 which put him in bronze medal position and making Charlotte Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian of all time. Talking about the gold medal ride she enjoyed on TSF Dalera Von Bredow-Werndl said, “I felt from the very first second to the last she was 100% with me - listening so well that I had to be careful not to do too much or too little! We didn’t have such a lucky start in the Grand Prix or the Special, but in the Freestyle we showed that anything is possible and from then on I began believing the Olympic dream could come true”.

“I went in there to do best I could and I’m absolutely thrilled with Pumpkin (Gio) because that’s the second time he’s gone through that Grand Prix Special, we’ve had very little shows to compete in this year, he is only ten years old and with not a lot of experience at all and the last few days he’s really tried his heart out and I can’t really ask for more than that. This might look like bronze but for me and my horse it feels like a gold medal”. Charlotte Dujardin (GBR)

THE NEW ZEALAND CONNECTION Although New Zealand did not have dressage a representative at Tokyo we happily shared the journey of Gio and Charlotte Dujardin as though they were one of our own. Gio’s co-owner, Renai Hart from Waitemata, was overwhelmed with the messages and support she received from both New Zealand and overseas during the dressage competitions. “It was a dream of two friends. Of seeing how far this small horse could go. We had an Olympic dream and I was just so happy we could share that. Of course I was sad I couldn’t go to Tokyo, but the support from everyone was fantastic.” 8 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2021

Thomas Oldridge and partner Felix Steverding at a local show with Beautiful Mind.

In 2015 the Canterbury based Thomas Oldridge made a life changing decision to sell his team of horses, pack up his world and move to Germany to develop his riding into a professional career.

T

homas started his journey at the stables of Hubertus Hufendiek and Anne Lene Holmen basing there until 2018. After nearly six years he now speaks fluent German, is self employed and completely settled in the European way of life. Thomas talks with us about how he came to be the first New Zealand rider to compete in Dressage at the prestigious Bundeschampionat (German Federal State Championships for Young Horses) held in Warendorf each year. The Bundeschampionate showcases the very best young horses in each age group from across Germany in the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping. To compete in the dressage, participants must receive an 8.0 (80%) overall score at local qualifiers. Now we hand over to Thomas Oldridge.

HARD WORK AND PATIENCE BRINGS THE GREATEST OF REWARDS 10 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2021

“After working at a couple of other young horse stables in the region as a freelance rider, I made the decision to start my own training stable with my partner Felix Steverding. At the start of 2021 my dreams became a reality and OS Sport horses was born. Based in the small town of Stadtlohn in North Rhein Westphalia, we are lucky enough to rent a private stable with 9 boxes, indoor arena, walking machine, sand (winter) paddocks and nice big fields set on the town border in the middle of a forest, giving us plenty of privacy and great hacking trails.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

A proud moment for Thomas to carry the NZL flag beside his name on the starterlist.

Beautiful Mind accepted the big atmosphere well, despite a spectator stumble in the grandstand which caused some distraction in the free walk.

Thomas and Beautiful Mind.

The beautiful surroundings of Warendorf, Thomas and Beautiful Mind leave the arena.

In 2019 the opportunity came that I could start the training of Beautiful Mind, a small 'Thoroughbred' like 3 year old Westfalian mare who was freshly broken in. The moment I went to see her at the stables I was in love. After the second ride she had me on the floor and then I knew, she was going to be great! Fast forward two years and she is now a lovely talented 5 year old mare, still lacking in a bit of strength but has the heart and willingness to do anything that is asked of her.

really at the level needed to even attempt this. I was totally blown away with how the mare felt and couldn't believe it when she won her first test, with 78% we were just 2% off what was needed for the Bundeschampionate. So then we decided to take a chance and enter one of the last qualifiying possibilities. There are only five competitions in our area every year - they can only be judged by certified judges, making sure that the quality that comes through is of a high standard.

The decision to try to qualify for Bundeschampionate was somewhat spontaneous, we headed of to a small competition to test if she was

So off we went to Münster for the final qualification. I was feeling pretty relaxed because the bar was never set high and nobody really

expected her to qualify....especially when I saw the names that we were competing against. Warming up I was speechless, this little horse did everything I asked and with such ease - nerves started kicking in because I thought that maybe there was a chance. Riding up the centerline and through the test was such a pleasure, I remember at the final corner I could see the owner and we were both smiling. Then came the results and we were in - 80% was enough to get us there and we nailed it, so in a second I messaged Dressage NZ and rang the Bundeschampionate rep and we were entered. grounds was somewhat unreal, driving into the stable complex and seeing not only all the amazing horses but the trucks and horsevans belonging to every top rider and breeding stud from Germany, and here we were with our mare. The first day we were allowed to ride into the arena then things became even more real and to see the other horses was pretty daunting. I worked her through the exercises that we would need in the test and was happy with how she worked.

The next day we were early on in the class at 8:50am which was good, it gave me less time to stress and worry. Heading over to the arena was a surreal experience, there I was, a nobody from Christchurch and now the first rider to represent New Zealand at this competition, you couldnt get the grin off my face. Warming up was much easier than expected, but, I was quick to realise that the quality of young horses here was something that I had never seen before, then my

goal became to ride a correct test where I could walk out and say that I was pleased. When you ride up the centerline everything else is gone, she was completely on my aids and gave everything, I couldn't have been happier with her. I walked out of the test with a total score of 74% and so much respect for this lovely wee mare. The young horses are given a mark for their walk, trot, canter, and then a mark for throughness/suppleness and an overall impression mark, these marks are added together to give the overall score. Heading back to the arena we sat and watched some of the other horses and were totally blown away. To think I was there riding in the same class as world champion breeding stallions was unreal and an experience I will never forget and hopefully will have the opportunity to do again. Now that we are back home the training continues. The goal is to develop further and qualify for the 6 year old test next year....maybe along with some other very exciting young horses that I have in training at the moment.”

PREMIUM ARENA MIX The recycling process takes used tyres which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or shipped offshore to be burnt. At our plant in Cambridge our triple treated refinery process uses a series of shredders and magnets to produce a consistent evenly sized material that is 99.9% metal free. Why use Treadlite arena mix: • Less wear and tear on horses hooves • Reduced concussion on joints through better impact absorption • Lively surface allows horses to get more air above the ground and better take off for jumping • Maintains a more even spread than traditional sand surface • Less affected by rain • Reduced dust means less respiratory issues • Can be used alone over base-coarse or spread on top and mixed with existing sand

n September 2020, Greg Smith (Greg Smith Dressage) and Helen Thompson-Carter (Fabuleux Vous) rebranded and relaunched their ‘Breeze’ collection. What started as a small capsule of fine sterling silver jewellery is now a suite of products including jewellery, shirts, socks and horse treats, with more to come… It is a strong and successful collaboration with two very driven teams focused on their passion for horses, for fine, fashionable, on trend products. We love sharing the emotional connection that only jewellery can, between the rider and their horse. The collection is called ‘Breeze’ after Greg’s award winning horse Avant Garde - a now retired but very talented NZ Hanoverian Dressage Champion. Our market has grown from being very Auckland based, to supplying retailers across New Zealand, Australia and into Europe. We sell direct online and at special events such as Horse of the Year, Equifest, Takapoto Estate and Dressage NZ.

What do we love about this collaboration? We are building a brand from the ‘hoof’ up. We have been able to identify a niche in the market for those that are looking for more on trend horse inspired jewellery, for special pieces that are traditional but have a modern twist. Jewellery that is different to other brands. Products where design, quality, affordability and the ‘Horse’, are the key drivers. We are on a journey together. We love that the Breeze Collection emerged from spending time together and enjoying a glass of wine. As individuals and businesses we are passionate about ‘giving back’ – Greg Smith Dressage is busy coaching riders of all levels and producing young dressage horses. For Greg the diverse opportunity to combine his love of design and fashion with Helen allows him to contribute to the sport and future of Dressage in NZ via sponsorship and by giving his time and services to developing grass roots dressage. Helen always says that ‘giving’ is part of the FV DNA where

Breeze samples and approves the GSD Equine treats.

Hospice and the Heart Foundation for Women are the charities of choice. There is a strong sense of community and pride in what we do, what we bring to market, how our product makes people feel, and our delivery capabilities. We want everyone to have a beautiful piece of jewellery that they love, that makes them feel special, that connects them with their horse/s, a time and place, that they wear to enjoy that is also affordable. ‘Breeze’ is a unisex brand with pieces for both men and women with prices ranging from $100 to $1300. PROFILE for many further successful transTasman eventing teams. She has mentored and coached many riders that have gone on to represent New Zealand, with her first Olympic representative rider being in a team for the Seoul Olympics in 1998. In 2010 she was part of a group that was established to reform the NZ performance/high performance athlete pathway model and has continued to work with NZ Eventing Squads as both Performance Manager and coach. Penny has represented New Zealand in Australia in the dressage discipline and along the way trained many horses to the highest level, including winning New Zealand’s pinnacle dressage award, the Burkner Medal for the Grand Prix Championships three times; in 1993 on Mary Wilson’s Oliver, in 2011 on Julie Brougham’s Gymstar One and her own Magnus Spero in 2015. A high point of Penny's career to date was being the first rider in NZ to break the 70% barrier at Grand Prix level in 2015 with Magnus Spero at the Horse of the Year Show. This achievement earned her the first Seventy Percent Club Inc prize initiated by Beth Bielski valued at $10,000.00. Penny has recently been named on the Dressage Development Squad with Lord Alexis, a nine year old bay gelding by Lingh II/ Lexurious/ Littorio, currently competing at Advanced. Alicia caught up with Penny to find out what she is working on this winter with her horses and what tips she has for other riders to stay motivated. DO YOU KEEP YOUR HORSES WORKING THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS? Yes I keep my horses in work over winter to continue their training and to keep them fit as an athlete. In saying that, I definitely let me horses freshen up during this time, so they have a very easy month after Horse of the Year and when their coat changes. We will also have a very easy weeks if the weather is particularly appalling.

Jordan Castle (Penny's son), Penny and husband John Pearce Photo: Libby Law Photography

WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSSING ON THIS WINTER WITH YOUR HORSES? The main focus is to strengthen your strength, work on your weaknesses and move forward with skills/horse training to move up to whatever grade we are focussing on. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH YOUR STUDENTS OVER WINTER? Winter is a good time to work on what their goals are for next season. And as above, focus on strengthening their strengths and working on their weaknesses. HOW DOES YOUR TRAINING REGIME DIFFER BETWEEN THE WINTER AND SUMMER MONTHS? The daily routine is the same with probably a little more emphasis on thoroughness and strength building in relation to where we are aiming to be for the next season. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OUR RIDERS ON HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED DURING THE COLDER WINTER MONTHS? I am a very goal orientated person so setting short term goals (3 months) is what keeps me on track. Also setting up a programme helps keep me on track. For example this year we are doing monthly meetings with friends/coaches in Taupo to train. Having test riding days with clients to encourage camaraderie and motivation. And including a holiday – a fun trip to the South Island with friends in August to help stay fresh.

dressage star in her own right, with wins and titles throughout the levels, twentyone-year-old Brina Carpenter is a dedicated, talented Young Rider. She is currently based in Clevedon, Auckland, where she is juggling finishing her Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Auckland University alongside her competitive Dressage career. Although only beginning Dressage when she was sixteen, she is already winning titles such as Young Rider of the Year in 2020, with her main mount, Leo Donna.

WHO IS YOUR TEAM FOR THE UP-COMING SEASON? This season I will have two horses out competing on my team. Leo Donna (Don Quattro x Leo Merrydance) is my main mount, a 12-year-old bay mare bred by Julia Fraser. I will be competing with her in Medium Tour for the season. My other horse is Furst Dancier SW (Fugato SW x Discotheque SW), a

WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS? Short term, for this season I want to lift my scores on Donna in Medium Tour. We are becoming much more confident with the movements, so I am super excited to get out and compete again. A main goal for me is to also make sure Fergus has good experiences at his shows, so that he gets confident with the atmosphere. Long term, I ultimately want to be representing New Zealand overseas at international competitions, including events such as the Olympics in Dressage. It’s a long road, but it is a major goal of mine, and I am dedicated to making it happen!

the Reserve Champion FEI Young Rider at the U25 Youth Festival in the same year. It made it even more exciting as we achieved this at one of our first ever shows together! I am also incredibly proud of everything my previous mount, Plutonium Lady, and I achieved in our time together. She was my first ever Dressage horse, which made it even more exciting when I was able to produce her from Elementary through to Advanced, as well as be named as the Advanced National Young Rider Champion at the U25 Youth Festival.

Brina and Plutonium Lady

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE? With Donna, my biggest achievements would definitely include winning the Young Rider of the Year title at the 2020 Horse of the Year show, as well as being AUGUST 2021 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | 23

OUR PEOPLE

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH FIONA SHARP

D

ressage Southland has nominated Fiona Sharp for the Volunteer of the Month Award. According to the group secretary Lucy McKelvie, much of Fiona’s role happens behind the scenes prior to events because during events she is busy ridingmothering-judging! Fiona is also working hard on her judging expertise having recently been promoted to List E. Here is the Southland Group’s ‘downlow’ on Fiona, one of their talented and hard-working committee members.

Sponsored by Big Barrel

ROLE: Grounds person liaison, liaising with the Gore A&P Showgrounds caretaker around dates for competitions, locations of arenas at events and dealing with specific requests that the group or the caretaker may have!

CURRENT HORSE: NW Finesse, by the Australian warmblood sire 'Fisherman’s Friend'. His stable name is Finn. “We are currently training: Level 8/GP. Finn is very willing and forgiving. I’ve owned Finn for three years and began competing him at Advanced Medium. My dressage goals are to

continue my partnership with him, continue to improve his quality of work and my own riding skills so we can both be the best we can be”.

WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT DRESSAGE: That it’s a collaborative effort, obviously between you and your horse but also amongst riders and trainers. I’ve been so fortunate to have awesome friends/ contacts that keep me motivated, are supportive and that I’m continually learning from. That goes for both my riding and judging. It’s a sport where you must have good people around you and be willing to keep learning from others and seeking advice.

WHO DO I MOST ADMIRE IN THE HORSEY WORLD? That’s easy - Julie Brougham, not just for the obvious reason that she has reached the pinnacle of dressage in NZ but for her amazing courage and stamina.

WHEN I’M NOT RIDING: I’m taxi driving my three children around Gore. They have lots of different interests and I really try to spend as much time with them as possible. For me, my children are my legacy and as much as the horses can dominate life I want to be remembered foremost by them as an unselfish Mum, that’s a constant work in progress!! Fiona is the recipient of this month’s Big Barrel volunteer prize. For mates rates, exclusive offers and all your party needs visit your nearest Big Barrel and join their Mates Club. OFFICIAL OF THE MONTH HELEN CHRISTIE

S

outhland’s Helen Christie has an enviable international record as an FEI Steward with six Olympic Games (Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London, Rio de Janeiro & Tokyo) and three World Equestrian Games (Kentucky, Normandy & Tryon) on her passport.

Sponsored by AR Dressage Helen Christie busy at work during the Tokyo Olympics Photo: Libby Law Photography

Her most recent assignment was the Tokyo Olympics. The Tokyo invitation came over two years ago with the initial assignment involving attendance at the test event in 2019. With time to reflect as she spends her days in managed isolation in a Christchurch hotel, Helen shares the Tokyo experience “The Japanese organisation was amazing. I cannot think of another country that could have coped and carried out the level of compliance that was required to make the Games reality. It truly was incredible to witness. It was so sad the country couldn’t reap the benefits of their work in so many ways with the Japanese public and international visitors excluded.”

WE ASKED HELEN WHAT THE HIGHS OF TOKYO 2020 WERE FOR HER? The Eventing of course, but the Freestyle Dressage and Individual Jumping were great as I could just watch! As a group, the Chief Stewards shared an office, and the door was always open. We were responsible for our own discipline, but shared areas on rosters. Most of our team were multidisciplinary, so there were regular negotiations. We

sometimes had to negotiate for arena space! During the build up to the Eventing we tried to keep the rosters to morning or evening only. But we knew that competition time would be busy, with on duty sessions both morning and evening, and moving to Sea Forest for the cross country. Everyone worked way above and beyond. It was especially satisfying to see the Japanese Stewards in the foreground of the activity, giving them as much exposure as possible. They can be so proud!

ABOUT HELEN: Originally from Great Britain, Helen competed to what is now 4* eventing before settling in Waikaia in the deep south.

“In the 1980s, we hosted an event at on our home property, and I started judging. Did you know in 1993, Southland had 40 dressage judges? I did my first FEI seminar in the 90s, and my first overseas assignment at 4* level in 2001. I have been fortunate to have judged all over the world and have done an FEI Championship on every continent. I am so lucky to have seen the world’s best horses and have made wonderful friends from all over. My next assignment is to find time to study for my A level Dressage judge exam!!” Helen is the recipient of this month’s AR Dressage Official’s award. Young Horse Competition Review Dressage NZ has released a new set of tests for 4,5,6-year-old horses which may be used at any event. All other young horse tests previously used are now obsolete. Rules for competitions are currently being finalized and will be published on the ESNZ website. The FEI test for seven-year-olds will continue to be used. The link to the new tests can be found here https://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/disciplines/dressage/resources/dressage-tests/

Youth Advocacy The committee applauded the work done by the Young Rider Panel and the structure and formation of a Youth Advocacy Group for dressage is to be finalized and implemented following consultation between the Dressage Board and the young riders.

WHY? • So many young riders have awesome ideas • To remove stigma • Create a safe space • To bridge the gap between youth and the DNZ committee & board • To connect young riders who are interested in dressage and to inform young riders

DRESSAGE GOES GOLD SILVER BRONZE The byline Amateur Rider Classification Review

The proposal was widely accepted by delegates on a trial basis for the 21/22 season to be reviewed and any changes considered necessary made prior to implementing into the rule book for the 21/22 season.

BACKGROUND For the last two years (2020 & 2021) it was raised at the North Island Riders meeting that the Amateur classification system has not been working as intended. This was raised again at the 2021 Planning meeting and agreed that a subcommittee be established to review the current system and explore the possibility of a new system that will better meet the needs of our riders especially those new to our sport and those moving up a level for the first time.

SECTION CLASSIFICATION FOR GRADED CLASSES Each level of graded competition e.g., Preliminary, Novice etc. up to Advanced Medium is divided into three sections: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The section which a member may enter is determined by the rider experience AND the combination experience at each level of competition, whether on a horse or pony. Each level can run as one class with all riders being judged by the same judge. In this case at the end of the class the results of the class are divided into the different sections. Alternatively, if the numbers allow sections may be run as separate classes at that level. • Bronze sections are for less experienced combinations who have just started competing at a given level so that they can compete against those with a similar ability. • Silver sections are designed for those combinations that show more ability at a level and have demonstrated that they are no longer beginner at that level. • Gold sections are open to riders who do not qualify for Bronze or Silver

GUIDELINES • Applies to graded competitions only • Does not include musical scores in determining section eligibility • Section eligibility is as at close of entries • No restrictions on riding downgraded horses • There is no expectation or requirement that an event uses this classification system, nor do they have to use all three sections if it is chosen to be used. For example, an event may choose to run a bronze section and all gold and silver are run as open. • Sections do not have to be run as separate classes but can be run as one class with extra awards for silver and bronze riders. • There is no expectation that Premier League shows provide separate championships for silver and bronze riders especially if the level is being run as one class. • To check your horses and rider results history, go to ESNZ website or EvoEvents
