Wendy Hamerton
A number of New Zealand riders who have been successful in the Challenge either as a team member or individual have gone on to compete successfully internationally at FEI level in Australia and beyond. The list is quite long. Andrea Raves, Marcia Bayley, Sue Hobson, Louisa Hill, Kallista Field, Julie Brougham, all set high standards in their competition era to inspire riders of the day and now we have Melissa Galloway carrying on the tradition.
Alyssa Harrison
From a 2018 World Challenge Prix St Georges win with Windermere J'Obéi W on 71.85% to second place in the Grand Prix Special at Lier on 72.05% in 2022. It’s quite an inspirational pathway and story. And if betting was allowed, I think we would bet that Melissa’s international journey is just beginning.

It will be great for the competition when we can get international judges back to New Zealand for the Challenge, but we cannot deny that our own national and FEI judges have capably ensured the continuation of the Challenge during the past two years whilst our borders have been closed - thank you.
Jessica Roberts
The personal commitment of international judges based outside of Europe tends to go unnoticed. Three New Zealand judges are required to attend in person courses in either Europe or the USA this year to maintain their accreditation. Thank you again. Without your commitment to maintaining your accreditation we would need to import even more foreign judges to host our CDI competitions - and we know what that means… We are all looking forward to Dressage for Denmark - we cannot thank enough everyone who has got behind this event at such short notice. Until April… noho haumaru… stay safe

KIWI MAGIC FOR MELISSA IN BELGIUM Article by Wendy Hamerton Photos by © Digishots
Melissa Galloway and Windermere J’Obéi W Photo: © Digishots
All eyes were on the livestream as New Zealand fans set their alarms for an early start to watch Melissa Galloway & Windermere J'Obei W take on some of Europe’s best at the Lier CDI 3*. 6 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | MARCH 2022
INTERNATIONAL NEWS A few minutes into the trot work their score was trending at over 73% and we were all holding our breath - could this trend continue? Melissa took a commanding lead and it wasn't until two horses later that German combination MüllerLütkemeier and Valencia AS scored 77% that Melissa was overtaken had to concede the top place. It was an exciting and emotional day for New Zealand fans. Lyndal Oatley and Eros
F
irst up was the Grand Prix and they had drawn number two in a large field of 28 riders from ten different nations. Joey looked a little on edge in the big atmosphere resulting in a couple of small but expensive mistakes amidst some high-quality work that was consistently receiving 7’s and 8’s. It is easy to say what could have been but there was just a little over 2 percent between 4th place and 12th place. There was some stable mate rivalry going on too with Charlotte Fry and Don Joe finishing a single mark ahead for 11th place. Although based in Europe, Oceania group riders were dominant with Lyndal Oatley and the simply stunning grey Eros taking second and Warwick McLean on Hendrix II in fourth. The winner was the elegant German pair of Fabienne Müller-Lütkemeier and Valencia AS on 75.8% It was none the less a great result on day one giving Melissa start #9 in the Grand Prix Special scheduled for the following day. In Europe riders must opt for either the Special or the Freestyle and Melissa had selected the special at this event.
TO PUT THIS PLACING IN PERSPECTIVE Representing Germany Fabienne Müller-Lütkemeier has won gold medals in team dressage at the 2013 European Dressage Championship in Herning and at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy. Her current best individual championship result is 10th from the European Championships in 2013. She has competed at two World Cup Finals (in 2015 and 2016). In 2015 she placed 10th aboard Qui Vincit Dynamis. The following year she placed 6th aboard D'Agostino. She is a niece of Nadine Capellmann, 2002 World Champion in dressage and the daughter of Gina Capellmann, a multiple championship medalist.
being surrounded by riders that I have admired and followed for years.” With riders from so many nations what is the general atmosphere like? “It was so great to see so many countries represented there! That really makes the sport exciting.” Were they a bit surprised to see a New Zealand rider there? “Yes people were quite surprised… many really appreciating from how far away I had come. I didn’t know that a lot of people realise just how far away it really is. You almost couldn’t get more further away than New Zealand. Seeing how close and easily accessible competitions like this are to people living in Europe definitely does make you realise why so many people base over here and how necessary it is in this sport to really make a mark.” Was there any particular reaction from any of the other riders or judges about your great 2nd place? “Both Australian riders Lyndal Oatley and Warwick McLean were extremely lovely and welcoming to me which I so appreciated. They both gave me great words of encouragement.
THE BULLETIN TALKED TO MELISSA AFTER THE EVENT
One of the judges, Freddy Leyman said what a lovely soft and harmonious test the special was and that he really liked to see that.”
How did it feel to be standing next to Fabienne in the prizegiving? “The whole competition was very surreal,
And so the journey really begins thanks Melissa for the inspiration.
Fabienne MüllerLütkemeier and Valencia AS
Going into the break in the Special, no rider had scored better than 70%. Melissa and Joey came in second to go after the break with an air of ease and confidence. MARCH 2022 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | 7

HYGAIN & MITAVITE NUTRITION SERIES
THE ULTIMATE FEED FOR PERFORMANCE AND POWER WITH A TOUCH OF COOL Mitavite has recently launched a new feed into the market that was due to be promoted at HOY and Equifest, due to COVID restrictions cancelling or post-poning many events we thought it might be best to introduce it for you here in the Bulletin. 10 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | MARCH 2022
HYGAIN & MITAVITE NUTRITION SERIES

etting your horse’s energy levels to match their workout can be a tricky business, especially if your horse is naturally hot or fizzy. Whether you’re competing at a high-performance level or simply enjoying the odd pony club dressage day, your horse still needs access to a feed that will supply their every nutritional need – so we need to think about getting the right amounts of vitamins and minerals to appropriate levels of protein, sugar, and starch. Your horse’s body needs it all to be their healthiest and happiest self to produce great work.
With so many ‘cool’ feed options on the market, it’s hard to know where to begin. Mitavites’ ‘Cool Vitality’ is a great foundational cool feed to build your horse’s daily diet around. Free from oats and corn, the new muesli feed from Mitavite is the perfect blend of cool energy and conditioning. Not only is it tasty enough to tempt even the fussiest eaters, its highfibre and low-starch content, and the safe controlled energy via the inclusion of micronized grains, fats and fibre and the absence of soy makes it suitable for most dressage horses. Dependant on body size most horses will get everything they need from 2-3kg a day but when you’re away and a horse runs out of energy towards the end of the competition period you can happily up the rate of feed knowing that your horse will maintain a cool head while benefitting from the extra calories. Cool Vitality contains all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your horse needs, as well as Bonafide,® featuring
Your horse’s body needs it all to be their healthiest & happiest self to produce great work.
Quinaquanone® a bioavailable from of K1 and K2 proven in trials to increase bone density. Prebiotic and probiotics help support hind gut health function. Mitavite Cool Vitality is also perfect for off the track horses going through re-purposing into a new career and spelling horses that require feed to maintain condition or a pick-up after a tough competition season. The folks in Australia have been loving feeding it for about 6 months now and we are just starting to get feed-back from our riders here. Malissa Landreth from Ranfurly had this to say to us via messenger “absolutely loving the Cool Vitality – I’ve got my jumper and the 3 show ponies on it (all worked 5/6 days a week in full work)-it's just the right amount of energy especially for
my big guy who can get hot on the slightest increase of feed.” Now being carried by most independent stockists and available through the larger feed distributors there are samples available for a limited time to try prior to purchase in case you are worried about palatability in some of the fussier horses out there. Mitavite is also running an online competition to win 3 months worth of Cool Vitality so if you haven’t already entered the competition now is a good time as entries close on the 30th April. If you have an queries about whether Cool Vitality or another feed might be more suitable for your needs please don’t hesitate to get in touch as every horse is an individual and we want to be sure to get the right fit for your circumstances.

DRESSAGE FOR DENMARK
DESTINATION DENMARK Photo by © Digishots
Six New Zealand riders have put up their hand to contest for a ride at the Ecco FEI Dressage World Championships in Herning, Denmark in August later this year.
C
ombinations must first earn two FEI qualifying scores in the Grand Prix of 66% (known as MER - short for Minimum Eligibility Requirement) This qualification is then overlaid by the ESNZ selection criteria which can be viewed here...
Covid has seriously restricted competition for home based New Zealand riders so a lot rests on performances from limited opportunities in New Zealand and Australia for them over the coming months.

ohn and the 10-year-old stallion Chemistry (by Connaisseur) are the first New Zealand combination to earn two FEI MER and in doing so gained valuable test experience at CDI3* level. They scored third places at both Boneo Summer Dressage Championships in January and Willinga Park last month with very consistent scores of 69.478 and 69.957 percent. They will continue their bid for selection at Melbourne’s Dressage with the Stars CDIW (24-26 March) and the Sydney CDI3* in early May.

This combination have two seasons of Grand Prix experience under their belts, although it’s been two years since their last CDI
together due to lockdowns and Letty Lei EDH requiring stomach surgery (which she has now fully recovered from). “I have done a couple of NZ national tests for much improved scores, so I hope to build on that over here,” says Victoria, who is planning to attend CDIs in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. “We’ll probably be one of the last combinations to get going as we have our first qualifiers in mid- late April at Sint Truiden 3*(BEL) and Kronenberg 3* (NED).”

NSC ANDREAS
T
aranaki’s Vanessa Way and her Anamour gelding NSC Andreas (bred by Brenda Bishop) have this competition seriously in their sights. NSC Andreas is a powerhouse with a strong piaffe and passage tour; Vanessa has worked steadily over the past years to develop his work which is reflecting in their scores. “Our best performance was a 75% in the Grand Prix test at a local Taupo training day - but was seriously the best Grand Prix test I have ever done. A dream to be repeated!”
36 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | MARCH 2022
“Every ride I have on Andreas is an enjoyment. I love the partnership and development of training my own horses with the dream of being able to one day perform a flawless beautiful performance,” says Vanessa, who rides and coaches fulltime. Vanessa has a wealth of experience in training her own horses up through the levels with a very exciting team of young horses emerging through the ranks and - pre-Covid - travelled annually to England to train with her mentor and friend Carl Hester.

Wendi Williamson and Don Vito MH Photo: Libby Law Photography
“There have been no opportunities to compete at FEI events in New Zealand or Australia for the past two years, so having DNZ run this show is huge for elite level sport in New Zealand. For this horse - only just starting at Grand Prix level travelling to the recent FEI shows in Australia without any starts prior was not an option.” 38 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | MARCH 2022
T
he 9-year-old Don Vito MH (bred by Matthews Hanoverians, by Don Frederico and out of Adelheid, dam of Wendi’s two previous Grand Prix rides (Don Amour MH and Dejavu MH) is at the very beginning of his Grand Prix career in Wendi’s experienced hands. The combination have had two official Grand Prix starts for a promising 69.02 in the open class at the U25CH and 69.9% at the Waitemata Premier League 2022.
“He’s a young horse just starting at the Grand Prix level so our training focuses on building strength and confidence in the movements required for the GP test predominantly,” explains Wendi. “He is a very positive horse to train and always trying his best, so from that perspective he is a rewarding horse to work with. He’s particularly bouncy off the ground which makes for plenty of strength building for me too, but also makes him super fun to train.”

PREMIUM ARENA MIX Treadlite is excited to offer premium arena mix which can be tailored made for each riders desired requirements. We proudly produce Treadlite right here in New Zealand. The recycling process takes used tyres which would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or shipped offshore to be burnt. At our plant in Cambridge our triple treated refinery process uses a series of shredders and magnets to produce a consistent evenly sized material that is 99.9% metal free. Why use Treadlite arena mix: • Less wear and tear on horses’ hooves • Reduced concussion on joints through better impact absorption • Lively surface allows horses to get more air above the ground and better takeoff for jumping • Maintains a more even spread than traditional sand surface • Less affected by rain • Reduced dust means fewer respiratory issues • Can be used alone over base-coarse or spread on top and mixed with existing sand

aikato-based Gaylene and her 12-year-old bay gelding Jax Johnson (by Johnson, bred by David Woolley and Rania Todd) continue to from strength to strength after enjoying many successes and title wins up through the levels to Grand Prix. Gaylene has weekly online lessons with Vanessa Way which she says have

helped immensely: “Jax has really stepped up in the last few months getting more established in his work. Vanessa also helps me with test riding, and with her expertise she doesn’t let me get away with anything. They say you have one amazing horse in a lifetime and I’m sure Jax is mine.” “It’s such a fabulous opportunity to have a CDI here in New Zealand, as I have only had one start this season due to cancellations. Having never been to a CDI event before, it makes it so much easier for me to have it here, rather than having to travel overseas - thank you DNZ for making this happen.”

OFFICIAL OF THE MONTH ROBYNE NAYLOR Robyne has been nominated by Dressage NZ as the AR Dressage Official of the Month as she prepares for the long drive from Christchurch to Taupo to be on the Dressage for Denmark FEI stewarding team. AS TOLD BY FELLOW STEWARD RACHEL MCCALLUM…
R
obyne is both an FEI Dressage Steward and FEI Para Dressage Steward, Canterbury based but has worked all over New Zealand as well as in Europe and the UK with both disciplines. Stewarding with Robyne, things

can be going to hell in a hand cart, but she calmly carries on and formulates a plan to sort things out and keep everyone happy and on track. Anyone who has been to Horse of the Year Show will know that trying to find a suitable and
safe area for our Para athletes can be like trying to find a 10 in your dressage test score sheet… but Robyne is not afraid to take ownership of some space on the Polo Fields and the odd Show Rider has definitely discovered how much she defends her space when they have strayed into the Para warm up and competition area. Robyne has a wealth of knowledge for the Para discipline, and we are very lucky to have her guidance at our Nationals and HOY events for these riders. She is a fabulous mentor and I know many of us had benefited from working alongside her at various shows in the South Island. She is always happy to take the time to train people new to the role of Stewards in both Dressage and Para Dressage. Robyne loves international travel and has taken many tour groups to various equestrian events around the world over the years. And from what I have heard there is never a dull moment. I believe that her tour group to WEG in France was Robyne at her finest, making the most of a bad situation and ensuring everyone had a great time regardless.
ROBYNE IS THE RECIPIENT OF THIS MONTH'S AR DRESSAGE OFFICIAL OF THE MONTH AWARD. For further information on AR Dressage contact Andrea Raves at tetch@xtra.co.nz.

to help. She often volunteers to write at dressage competitions. “I love seeing dressage from another perspective and give back to the sport that I love. This is especially relevant at present as I’m recovering from a torn ACL and displaced fracture; I’m living vicariously through other competitors.” In May 2020 she was a brilliant arena steward at Oro Dressage by the Lake, keeping riders in the warmup sand informed about competition progress. Dressage for Denmark is her next target but in quite a different role. Her day to day employment utilises her phenomenal document and keyboard skills making her an ideal candidate to be one of the first paperless scoring Black Horse One scribes in New Zealand. Kyrie grew up going to Pony Club and competed in dressage, mounted games, showing, show hunter,
eventing and also hunted. While she has always enjoyed training dressage, her spinal damage now doesn’t allow her to ride for an extended period of time, nor risk jumping. Since 2017 she has been classified as a Grade V para dressage athlete and on her lovely chestnut I Romulus, went on to become the Grade V National Champion in 2018 and 2019 and HOY Champion in 2018 and 2020. HER FRIEND NICOLA ESSEX TELL US MORE “Kyrie has a huge heart. She has an incredibly quirky sense of humour, combined with an ability to call a spade a spade. She has passion for what she stands for. She spent several years in the USA working at a (Show) Hunter stable for where she honed her specialty skill of turnout and “braiding” skills (known as plaiting to us kiwis!) She is always generous offering her skills to people and events and produces the most amazing minutes and reports! She is super friendly and always ready to chat if she isn’t on a mission. And don’t be surprised if she politely corrects the pronunciation of her name. It’s pronounced Ki-ree-ay.
